Abram frowned at him then, lost. I am so fucking dumb for thinking he’d understand. But he wouldn’t waste his breath explaining. He pulled out another cigarette and lit it, putting it to his lips and taking a deep drag. Abram hadn’t backed away after he’d let go of his neck. He was standing too close, not close enough, and simply… watching Andrew smoke. Holding eye contact, only flickering down to his lips when Andrew took another drag. And fuck if that wasn’t enticing.

god sorry but i can't stop thinking about "truth is irrefutable, untainted by bias. sunrise, abram, death, these are truths" coming from andrew in the king's men. Like. from a man for whom "please", "misunderstanding" "sorry" have all been lies, who has such a fierce devotion to truth, to the truth, said to a man made of nothing but lies, blood, and deception, to neil, who is waiting for death to come to him, who is a fake person trying so hard to be a real one that he doesn't realize he made himself real when he let these people, let andrew, hold onto him.

sunrise is irrefutable. it will happen for as long as the world turns, no matter what is left of the earth. it is a beginning, a rebirth, the start of a new identity neil reinvents himself as. death is irrefutable, it is the one constant throughout everything, and its especially prominent throughout the series. early death is also the end neil assumes to be inevitable for him– he spends the entire series completely desensitized to his own death, he repeats over and over again "he wouldn't be here in may so it didn't matter anyway", he uses that 'truth' in his eyes, to justify getting as close as he does to the foxes, to andrew, to kevin, he uses his truth of death as a way to keep himself alive in a sense. neil wants to live, desperately, he wants to hold onto this as long as possible, he just doesn't think he can, he assumes it's out of his control. that's why he breaks off his deal with andrew. neil's flaw is thinking he can't be saved.

and i guess it depends how you look at it, but i've always read it as andrew listing 'abram' as a truth as well. neil's middle name, the same one he was born with, that he has kept amongst the mixture of twenty two names and sixteen countries, because the one thread that links nathaniel wesninski and neil josten is abram. abram is a truth, the first real part of himself that neil gives to andrew. his middle name. the same one his mother used.

sunrise, abram, and death, are neil's truths. they're the truths he gave to andrew.

"I'm only asking for this one thing. It doesn't have any effect on you anyway and it's an unnecessary risk. You don't need a third addiction." "I don't need anything," Andrew reminded him, right on cue. "If you don't need it, it'll be easy to give it up," Neil said. "Right?" Andrew thought it over a minute, then flicked his cigarette at Neil. It singed the material where it bounced off his shirt. Neil ground it out under his shoe when it hit the asphalt. The cool look he flicked Andrew was wasted; Andrew's gaze had already drifted past him in search of something more interesting. "I'm going to take your temper tantrum as a yes," Neil said. "I'll bring the money by your room tonight." "Will you?" Andrew slid his stare back to Neil's face. "Rather, can you? Aaron doesn't want you in the room anymore, Nicky says. Something about you inviting yourself to fights that aren't your concern?" He waggled his hand in a so-so kind of gesture. "This phone tag nonsense has left the message a little unclear. Perhaps you'll explain to my face why you're suddenly so interested in my brother's life." "I'm not," Neil said. "Without the lies," Andrew added. "I'm not," Neil said again. "I can't stand him, but we're out of time. I told you last October we can't make it to finals if we're a fractured mess. You two are holding us back. I had to start with one of you. Since everyone bets on Aaron and Katelyn, I thought he'd fight you for her." "Wouldn't that be an interesting change of pace," Andrew said. "See also: a waste of energy and effort. He might try, but he won't win." "You have to let him go." "Oh," Andrew said, as if this was news to him. "Do I?" "You'll lose him if you don't," Neil said. "He'll keep pushing Katelyn away if you tell him to, but he'll resent you for it. He'll count down the days until graduation and when it comes you'll never see him again. You're not stupid. I know you can see it. Let him go now if you ever want him to come back." "Who asked you?" "You didn't have to. I'm volunteering my opinion." "Don't," Andrew advised him. Sunrise, Abram, death: these are truths. You cannot judge a problem with your obsession goggles on and call it truth. You aren't fooling either of us." But as long as we're talking about obsession and Aaron's life, what are you going to do about his trial? She's going to be here for it, isn't she? Cass, I mean," Neil said, though he was sure Andrew knew who he was talking about. "You're going to have to face her." "Seen and not heard," Andrew reminded him. He sounded bored, but Neil knew a warning when heard one. Neil let it slide and went back inside.
