quill. bruh. i have a question. ok so for climate context, im in the PNW on the coast. W H Y do lichens and moss grow so much more prolifically on live deciduous trees than evergreens? like. holy fuck. our maples and alders and fruit trees are *dripping* with moss and lichen.
ah, that’s hard to say! really depends on what the species are, tbh.
the best explanation imo would be taking into account the idea of ‘microhabitats’, which is the idea that really small organisms live their lives in...well, very small subsections of larger habitats, and aren’t as affected by the larger habitat. that’s not to say that they aren’t affected at all, but, for instance, a moss on the trunk of a tree is living in a habitat that drains and dries fast after it rains, while a moss at the base of the tree may be living in a puddle for a bit after the same event. you can get this all the way down to preserved levels of humidity under rotting logs and stuff. so lichens and mosses work in that context, too, and different types of bark might appeal differently to different species, whether its in terms of how it’s shaped or the nutrient content or other factors we may not know about yet.
so, in short, it’s probably something to do with preference of the species in question. maybe they get more light on a tree that drops its leaves than on a tree that doesn’t, maybe they prefer the wood and bark more in some over others, maybe it’s a thing with positioning in the air column.... if you look up any of the species you see, the text might say that they prefer such and such trees over others, but why can be a complicated question.
also, side note relevant to the PNW: the species of lichens and bryophytes (mosses and liverworts) on coastlines tend to be ‘fluffier’ and more extravagant and enthusiastic in what they look like and how they grow, because mist coming in from the coast provides a pretty stable water source (not to mention that temperatures tend to be a little more moderate). lichens and bryophytes in more extreme conditions tend to be more conservative, and might grow smaller and more slowly while pressed against the ground or trees or whatnot. i remember i went to the PNW the summer after i first really learned about lichens and bryophytes and was blown away about how they just like, take over, and in so many colors too!! idk how i would get anything done if i lived there lmao
#iowa lichens are neat and we DO have a couple fruiticose lichen species around but theyre verrrryyy small#asks#lichens#mosses#sunreon

I just got my decants and I ordered Romans, Proverbs, and Luke. I’m pretty excited to try them
Ooh nice! I’d love to know what you think of them.
When you say decants I’m assuming you mean not a full bottle? Where does one obtain such a thing? There are so many limiteds I’d love to try, but they don’t sell Imps and I’m generally not willing to shell out for a full bottle of something completely unfamiliar.

what's your favorite kind of chickenbird
Chickenbirds! There are SO MANY KINDS. I went a-Googling to figure out what the one I was thinking of was called and tripped down a veritable rabbit hole of chicken varieties. This post got really long because chicken pictures, so I’m sticking it under a cut; my apologies to anyone on mobile.
Anyway! I’m partial to the Wyandotte, because they look like someone did the lineart layer and gave up:
This is called lacing, and there are also colored varieties (this is a black-laced red):
There’s even other lacing colors, like this blue-laced red:
And this absolutely gorgeous gold-laced (aka black-laced gold), where the lacing is black but so glossy it looks blue when the light hits it right:
They’re not the only breed to have this pattern; see also the Sebright Bantam, where the lineart effect is even more pronounced:
And the Barnevelder often has a double lacing pattern:
I also have a soft spot for the Brahma because MEGA BIRD with FLUFFY PANTS:
youtube
Special mention to the Deathlayer for having the most metal name ever:
And to the Ayam Cemani and Swedish Black Hen, for being so committed to the goth aesthetic that even their muscles, bones, and organs are black:
Thanks for asking!

……………….are there churches that DON’T have their ashes made from the palms of last year???
I mean it seems like one of things that would be rather universal, but I’ve gone to the same Lutheran church essentially my entire life so I wasn’t sure if that was common for other churches/denominations. I’m kind of glad it is though, it’s really powerful from a symbolic standpoint and one of things that’s always just kind of stuck with me ever since I learned about it.
#sunreon#replies#I've definitely had Christian friends who didn't know what Maundy Thursday was so I try not to make assumptions#about what other churches and denominations celebrate in terms of the church calendar#...I feel like some of my classmates didn't even know about putting on ashes???

sunreon replied to your post: Related to that last reblog, I’ve been told before...
wow that’s SUPER bullshit
It is SUCH bullshit, and in my particular experience came with a heavy dose of homophobia in the case of my same-sex friendships (which is a whole ‘nother issue that I didn’t want to get into in that other post)
Like I distinctly remember this starting around the same middle school-ish time people (primarily my parents) started pushing me not to hold hands or link arms with my (female) best friend because [voice drop to whisper] people might assume things
I knew it was bullshit then and went “...yeah no” because I’ve always been touchy-feely with people I’m close to and didn’t give a damn what people thought because how was that my fault? And now that I’m older and Definitely Not Straight it’s extra bullshit and my “fuck this noise” feelings have only intensified about it, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

friend are you the person who likes bonefolders?
I don’t know if I am That Person, but I DO INDEED appreciate a good bonefolder! (Although I have relatively little use for them, alas.)

@sunreon Thanks friend. *hugs* I'm not sure if she meant it to be passive aggressive but it definitely came across that way, especially since I've gotten comments like this before. (Apologies for the huge screengrab but this string of comments made me giggle, especially the last two.)

that's not young patrick stewart, that's andy whitfield, who was the star of "spartacus: blood and sand". he died in 2011.
OH NOOOO.
ANDYYYYY. :( :( :( :(
I was looking on mobile and the picture was like postage stamp sized on my potato phone.
I loved him in Blood and Sand. He was such an adorable melodramatic goof.

garden auntie i acquired some doterra "deep blue" muscle rub for free (hey free muscle ointment right) and i just wanna run the oils by you to make sure if there's anything in here that's a "DO N.O.T." It's in lotion format so seems to be adequately diluted. wintergreen, camphor, menthol, sweet almond, peppermint, eucalyptus, "c. frutescens" (no specific cultivar named), blue chamomile, blue tansy, helichrysum, cape jasmine "fruit exctract", osmanthus, chlorella vulgaris. please and thank you!
I wouldn’t ingest it (tansy can be hella toxic) but the wintergreen, camphor, menthol, eucalyptus, and peppermint will all do good work for sore muscles.
I don’t see the point of some of the others for topical pain relief (though the chamomile will help soothe skin) but they won’t hurt you used topically in small amounts so long as you’re not allergic. Test on a small patch of skin first to make sure you aren’t.

top five teas
Creme Brulee (black) - strong and sweet with a smooth caramel flavor (almost has a maple syrup smell in the bag)
Golden Monkey (black) - a little lighter than the above, with kind of a nutty taste
White Tea with Blueberry and Elderflower - very light and delicate without being overly sweet
Green Jasmine (can’t remember what looseleaf brand I have offhand but it’s a popular enough flavor you can find it pretty much anywhere) - I’m not a huge green tea fan but the jasmine adds enough flavor and sweetness for me to enjoy it
This one really good mead tea I got at the Celtic Festival, which I need to either get more of or figure out how to recreate
Thanks for asking!
