Sequitura’s guide to Kpop if for some reason you want to get into it

(Not recommended, the fandom culture is insane, though there are some nice songs)

These are songs that I really liked on the first listen and continue to like. Some songs take a while to grow on me, like “TT” by Twice. Those aren’t on this list.

They're not my top 100 - those would be too particular to my tastes and I tried to cover a range of musical styles.

* means that the song is a b-side (not the primary promoted song in an album) and thus probably doesn’t have a music video.

Oh My Girl (cheerful group with KILLER catchy melodies)  -Windy Day -Dolphin -Coloring Book -Closer -(optional listening) Secret Garden if you really liked Closer -(optional listening) Nonstop if you like catchy dance tunes, but after some of their really good stuff it'll pale in comparison. It's good gateway Oh My Girl, though.

Hyuna (a great performer who sells any song she’s in) -Trouble Maker -365 Fresh -Bubble Pop

CLC (they’ve unfortunately probably broken up now. Super talented group who’s bounced from genre to genre trying to get something to stick, leaving bops along the way.) -Pepe -Show* -No

Weki Meki (they’re slowly finding their niche, which is likely to be smooth club stuff) -Crush -(optional listening) Cool (I recommend watching their relay dance/dance practices and giving Lua some attention)

BOL4 (“indie”-ish band; not a big fan of most of their stuff) -Travel (but they did strike addictive gold when they went more rock)

Gfriend (Strings, guitar, and some of the best/most consistent vocalists in kpop right now) -Navillera -Mago

Dreamcatcher (a very unique, metal-influenced sound. Amazing dancing. Probably supported by the most humane company in kpop right now.) -Scream -Over the Sky* -Black or White* -(optional listening) And There Was No One Left* (idk why but this one hits me. It’s so sparse and yet makes you feel so disconcerted.) -(optional listening) Silent Night* (if you like the musical aesthetics of the song “Everytime We Touch”) -(optional listening) Can’t Get You Out of My Mind* (if you liked Silent Night)

Twice (“The Nation’s Girl Group”) -Fancy (kind of the only song of theirs that I adore; ask me for more recs if you really like them.)

Ailee (known as the Beyonce of Korea) -I Will Show You (an unironic “yasss” song) -Heaven (gee, this song is sad but never lets up with the power vocals as well, which I think works better than a straight-up slow ballad)

Loona (I don’t really click with them, but a few songs have hit me first listen) -Voice* (it sounds like a beautiful, brisk skate across a mile-long lake) -New (by Yves – it’s super flowy) -ViViD (by Heejin – I love sassy swing tunes what can I say) -(optional listening) Heart Attack primarily for the music video

EXID (power vocals + brass + hip-hop? I don’t really get it tbh but good singing can sell me anything.) -Ah Yeah

After School (I don’t know this group but this song is a bop. Might be one of my top 20 favorites of all time and I only heard it yesterday.) -Bang!

Sunny Hill (very unique social commentary music) -Pray (warning: one of the most disturbing music videos I’ve ever seen, but definitely worth a watch if you have a strong stomach) -The Grasshopper Song (music video is nicer)

(now we move into territory with guys in it. I personally think male artists in Korea release fewer great songs than female artists, beccause the general trend is to be “dark” or “moody” compared to the more melodic trends in female groups. If you like strong choreography or braggadocio vibes, though, you’ll probably like them better.)

AKMU (singer-songwriter sibling pair and probably my favorite composers in Korea right now.) -Dinosaur -How People Move -(optional listening) Happening (somehow gives coffee shop music a driving rhythm) -(optional listening) Like Ga Na Da (this is a song about the alphabet. It is still insanely catchy.) -(optional listening) Melted (sad ballad)

TXT (this group has other songs, but I don’t like any of them nearly as much.) -Runaway (like the classic boy group sound set on fire. A really nice pre-chorus of all things. Love the guitar.)

Ateez (they might become the next BTS; not sure.) -Wonderland (like... pirate hip hop/rock. Watch with choreography.) -Wave (a surprisingly potent summer song) -(optional listening) Say My Name

Shinee (some of the most talented dudes in kpop) -Lucifer (probably the only kpop song to pull off a one-note chorus well. Sounds like it was produced by people who evolved in a different universe.) -View (super smooth, groovy deep house song.)

Oneus (their good stuff goes hard) -A Song Written Easily -Valkyrie

Stray Kids (don’t know the group; song is great) -Miroh

A.C.E. (one of the only kpop groups doing hardstyle and surprisingly enough, I like it.) -Goblin -Cactus

2019 in Review

I’m gonna do a bunch of different categories. Also the first half or two-thirds of the year might be more heavily represented because I’ve had more time to sit with them plus I was gone and only semi-keeping up since September. Anyways overall takeaway from this year, the boys impressed me.

This was so hard because the newer boy groups have really been impressing me this year. I don’t think I mention TXT or VERIVERY on my blog at all but both have started their careers with a solid discography and verivery already has a signature sound. CIX and AB6IX get honorable mention for their amazing debuts but I think both of their comeback projects are weaker than the debuts.

[Interview] 170831 Serri Interview for BNT International (English)

[Reporter Heo Jemma] “To me, Dalshabet is the word ‘flower’. The most beautiful flower in my life, in full bloom with youth and passion. So it really becomes precious to me day by day.” A pretty woman with a good personality too, those are the words to perfectly describe Serri. These days, a good figure in the same appearance, she’s the positive energy that makes everyone around her have a good mood. Additionally, as the leader who leads Dalshabet, while taking care of the photo shoot staff throughout the day, she brought a relaxing atmosphere. On the edge of summer’s end, I meet the ‘charm-rich’ Dalshabet’s Serri. We release the honest interview she shared with us in her 7th year of being a singer.

Q. Comment on the photo shoot? Serri: When I heard that new I got a bnt interview, I was very happy and nervous. Isn’t bnt well known for taking pretty photos? (laughs) A long time ago, my posing was awkward, but now after 7 years, I think I’ve become quite proficient. The staff also helped me well, so it was a really enjoyable photo shoot.

Q. Recent activities? Serri: Recently we participated in the ‘Girls Live’ concert. In the meantime, we’ve done numerous concerts exclusively in Japan, and there weren’t many opportunities for a concert in Korea. But this time we have the opportunity to be able to do a concert, so I was very happy. I also participated in a drama OST by myself, and I plan to release two more in the future. Additionally I’m preparing a collaboration album with an indie group, and I participated in lyrics, so there’s anticipation. I think they might come out one by one in September and October.

Q. ‘Lovers in Bloom’ OST Serri: Someone I know recommended me to the producer, so I got a call and said I would be willing. I participated without pay, but as I expected, it was an enjoyable experience.

Q. Seeing you do the photo shoot, it seems your personality is easygoing Serri: When everyone saw only the first impression, there are many things that make it difficult for me, different from an urban image, I’m full of heodeong [beautiful but acting in a stupid way] (laughs). My personality is usually bright and positive, so my nickname is “HeungSerri [Fun Serri]” (laughs). My mood should be good so the people at my side can have good moods too, so I tend to flow with a lot of bright energy. Furthermore, I tend to really have a lot of aegyo, so it’s a little hard on the members (laughs). They liked it at first, but now they say, “Unnie, please stop it” (laughs)

Q. Dalshabet members’ character? Serri: Unexpectedly, Woohee doesn’t tend to talk much. On the contrary, Ayoung is really loud (laughs). In front of the fans, she doesn’t talk much, but when the members are together, there isn’t that kind of chatterbox (laughs). Subin has a very fun image, but on the contrary, she’s also very mature. Since she started her career early, so from watching next to her, she has many very mature appearances.

Q. The opportunity to debut as a singer? Serri: Following my friends to Gangnam. When I was a 6th year in elementary school, my talent was discovered at a jazz school I followed my friends to. The teacher called me aside, and they said I have really good taste in dancing and encouraged me to learn it properly. From that time on, while going to that school every day, after I was admitted, I built my own team and won a national contest. At that time, while I receiving casting offers from SM, JYP, and others, I gradually embraced the singer’s dream. I originated from SM’s Best Young Adult contest, and Sindong and Sunmi are friends I worked with.

Q. When was the happiest point after debut? Serri: There were a lot, but from them, I think I really liked ‘Be Ambitious’ and ‘Someone Like U’ promotions the best. No matter what, when there’s a lot of support and our music receives a lot of love from fans, that’s the most rewarding and happy time for me. Now, while our group promotions are resting for a moment, we’re each doing our own personal activities, so there’s a lot of free time, but I prefer to stay busy, so I’m still working. When I look back, I don’t think I could do a lot of personal activities, so from now on I’m striving to show a variety of appearances, so please anticipate.

Q. As the leader of the group, how do you deal with problems that arise among the members? Serri: No matter what, when several people live together, there are times when we hurt each others’ feelings. When that happens, somehow, because I’m the leader, I try to hug the kids a lot. When one or two issues rise up like that, we tend to turn it around properly, but when it happens a third time about the same thing, we definitely need to talk. Fortunately there’s good communication among the members, so we admit to one another and work together. It’s a harmonious style, so we can maintain sticking together.

Q. Celebrities the members are close with? Serri: There aren’t many we’re close with. When you’re busy, it’s difficult and you can’t approach socially. And between the members, we really like each other, so I think we stay more inside that fence. Even so, during promotions, we ran into Crayon Pop, Rainbow, Secret, or Nine Muses, so we became friends and often keep in touch.

Q. Hobbies? Serri: I really like watching movies or dramas. I’m greedy to act, so I try to follow along while I watch alone (laughs). And even when we’re not doing activities, I tend to do self-maintenance thoroughly, so I continue exercising,, and recently I’ve fallen in love with yoga, so I’ve considered getting certified. My teacher recommends it, telling me I’m very talented (laughs).

Q. You seem to have a lot of skills, but if you didn’t become a singer, what would you be doing now? Serri: I think I would be doing business. If you ask why, it’s because I have a little greed to do business even now (laughs). If it’s not fashion, an alcohol related business? I think I would like to do something like a cafe or lounge bar (laughs).

Q. I didn’t know how good your body was. Do you have any tips for maintaining a nice leg line? Serri: I have a bit of a ‘leg referee’ (laughs). It’s a part of the body I’m confident about, so for leg maintenance, when I shower, I always keep giving myself massages. When you massage while sweeping up from the bottom of the calf to the bottom of the thigh with body gel, it helps with blood circulation and has also has the effect of maintaining cellulite. It’s an easy method to follow, so if you’re legs are swelling, I recommend you try it. You have to be consistent.

Q. Do you happen to be in a relationship? Serri: I’m currently solo. Even so, I meet up occasionally (laughs). Even though I don’t, when there’s a lot of charm to date, there becomes even more, and unexpectedly, it’s a style that really matches your significant other. No matter what, I think the habits of a leader appear when I’m dating (laughs).

Q. Ideal type? Serri: These days I’ve fallen for Kang Daniel. I like that puppy appearance, and to possess that ‘beagle beauty’, it’s perfect (laughs).
