Solving NPR’s Sunday Puzzle...in R
Do you listen to Sunday Puzzle? It’s a weekly NPR podcast hosted by Will Shortz. Each week, the show has a quiz followed by a puzzle for listeners. Here was this week’s puzzle:
Name a state capital. Drop one of its letters. The remaining letters can be rearranged to name of another major city in the United States. What is it? There are two different answers, and you should find both of them.
Of course, achieving peak nerd, Curt and I thought that this would be a fun thing to code. Here’s what I came up with.
First, I found two lists. One of all state capitals, and another of the top 5,000 cities in the United States by population. Next, I looped through each capital city to find cities that were one letter shorter. I used the adist function to compare how different a capital and any given city were. Finally, I printed out all the cities and capitals that only differed by one letter. After a bunch of fussing ( I forgot to make all letters lowercase, for example), I got a total of five answers. Booya! Science. Curt also solved in C++ and got the same answers.
Check out the answer here (spoilers!!!!!!) :

and here are the city files in case you want to try it on your own :)

io9 has a weekly column called Sunday Puzzle where they roll out a new brain buster every week. This week's puzzle is a spin on the 100 prisoners trope. I've spent a few minutes on it, felt I was getting somewhere, got nowhere, gave up and decided to pawn it off on you instead. Feel free to discuss ideas in the comments.
Sunday Puzzle #9: The Puzzle Of 100 Hats
One hundred prisoners are lined up single file, facing in the same direction. Each prisoner will be randomly assigned either a red hat or a blue hat. No one can see the color of his or her own hat. However, each person is able to see the color of the hat worn by every person in front of him or her. To wit, the person at the head of the line cannot see the color of anyone's hat, the second prisoner can see only the first prisoner's hat, the third can see the first two prisoners' hats, and so on. The last person in line – the 100th prisoner – can see the colors of the hats on all 99 people in front of him or her.
Beginning with the last person in line, and then moving to the 99th person, the 98th, etc., each will be asked to name the color of his or her own hat. If the color is correctly named, the person lives; if incorrectly named, the person is shot dead on the spot. Everyone in line is able to hear every response as well as hear the gunshot; also, everyone in line is able to remember all that needs to be remembered and is able to compute all that needs to be computed.
Before being lined up, the 100 prisoners are allowed to discuss strategy, with an eye toward developing a plan that will allow as many of them as possible to name the correct color of his or her own hat (and thus survive). They know all of the preceding information in this problem. Once lined up, each person is allowed only to say "Red" or "Blue" when his or her turn arrives, beginning with the last person in line.
Develop a plan that allows as many people as possible to live. How many prisoners can you definitely save?

Puzzle #86: Twelve to Nine
This past weekend, I was thrilled to have the following puzzle read by Will Shortz on the Sunday Puzzle on NPR. (Here's audio of the whole segment.) You can hear the answer this coming Sunday -- broadcast times vary by station.
Name something that is part of a group of 12 . Change the first letter to the next letter of the alphabet to name something that is part of a group of 9. What are these things?
