Fellow cis lesbians, please remember that Roe V. Wade being overturned is not an invitation to be transphobic. Saying “I’m gay so I don’t have to worry about abortions” assumes that you only date/have sex with queer people who have uteruses. While you are allowed to have a genital preference, you should be mindful of the ways you can harm other non-men. This is a time where we should support each other, and especially because of the insane amount of biphobia I’ve seen this June, we need to do better at supporting members of our community.

The statement that you’re gay and don’t need abortions sends a message to the trans community that you’re discounting them as people with reproductive needs. You’re loudly and proudly saying that 1. you won’t date non-men with different genitalia than your own and 2. abortions don’t concern you because you can’t get pregnant from your partner. Abortions are forms of healthcare, and healthcare is a need for much of the LGBTQ+ community.

To the members of the trans community, I love you and hope this post supports you during this time.

I saw Avery Cyrus post on Tik Tok that people would say to her “You’re gay, the SCOTUS decision doesn’t affect you.” I believe at one point that Cyrus said she was bisexual, but now I’m unsure of her labeling because of the word gay instead of bisexual. It’s unclear if she is using gay as an umbrella term or has switched labels. Cyrus makes no effort to talk about how harmful it is to assume that gay women can’t get pregnant. Instead, she discusses how her rights as a queer woman will be taken if the SCOTUS decision about marriage equality is reversed. After that post, I saw more posts like it from lesbians about not needing to worry about abortions. It made me sad to see that other cis-lesbians are making this statement. It seems they aren’t acknowledging that non-men with different genitalia than their own can cause pregnancies. It is not transphobic to have a preference for the same genitalia, but it does seem harmful to not acknowledge that other people don’t share the same experience. Personally, I would not say that abortion doesn’t affect me. Although I typically have a preference, I make sure to say that my experience is individual. Other lesbians date/have sex with non-men who can get them pregnant. Not talking about it and not including them feels wrong.
