Animal of the Day!

Florida Manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris)

Conservation Status- Endangered

Habitat- Coastal southeastern United States

Size (Weight/Length)- 1.2 tonnes; 3 m

Diet- Seagrasses; Aquatic plants

Cool Facts- The Florida manatee is a west Indian manatee subspecies only found in the Florida Everglades and the surrounding coast. They are one of the longest lived subspecies, living up to 60 years. The Florida manatee can safely move between fresh and saltwater, having unique kidneys that heavily reduce their sodium levels while in salt water. These manatees are susceptible to cold weather, resulting in them flocking in massive numbers to natural hot springs throughout the Everglades. Strangely enough, the Big Bend Power Station is a hotspot for manatees in the winter due to warm water being pumped from the factory and into the nearby river. Only 6,000 Florida manatees remain due to an increased number of boat strikes and likelihood of frostbite. Luckily, zoos and veterinarians work together to rescue Florida manatees and release them back into their home rivers.

notes from straight after the Blur concert on 9th July Wembley (feel free to add to this in reblogs or comments):

Damon kissed graham then went and kissed Alex in cheek. Crowd said aww for both but Alex’s was louder, possibly cause the crowd had caught on by then. Graham then said ‘why did he get a bigger reaction..’

‘Forget that just Fucking get in with it’ before song 2 as Dave had been playing for a while and Alex’s go pro or tuner thing was taking ages to get fixed

Damon telling the story of ‘Wembley’ how Wember plotted out some of his land and ley means laid out, or something?? And how if centuries ago, eating mushrooms and stuff he might’ve dreamt this up, Wembley, and us all there.

And look at us now. Look at where we are. Damon saying look, how are we here to graham. Damon saying they were 12 and 13 at school and now they’re both still together in Wembley. And then them both doing a cute little celebration waving their arms in the air looking at each other haha

Early on, before the Wembley story, Damon asks crowd if they don’t mind if he takes a sip of his chai tea. It’s in a teacup. He gets it then drinks a bit. Graham then asks ‘can I have some chai tea?’ Suggesting it’s not tea in that cup…

Damon’s was like yeah ‘lab coat guys name’ make gray some chai tea will you, or one thing like this

Damon shouting out all the country flags he could see. One of them, he points out a flag which I didn’t see, and saying ‘what’s this one, [mumbles some country names] Estonia? Is it Estonia? No? Oh dear I got that one wrong. I don’t know that one’ and moving into the Mexican flag. Getting mexicos one wrong at first (which is why he said muchas gracias at some point I think). Seeing Argentina flags later on and going ‘Argentiiiinnaaa’.

Lots of Damon holding crowds hands. One point he hugs a fan and she screams high pitched which gets picked up very clearly by the mic, makes the crowd laugh. He pulls away and as he walks off points to a guy a person down from her and says ‘it was you who made me cry!’ Or something. Man smiles

Graham just being a legend on guitar. Sometimes laying on the floor playing. Doing backwards rolls, throwing his guitar in the air and catching it etc

The crowd cheering for coffee and tv and from what I remember singing it especially loud. Support of grahams one sing song!

Saying more towards the end, ‘I’m getting used to this now you know? Yeah it’s only Wembley, done this before’ or something similar, joking that he’s already over the awe of Wembley

Not the concert but as everyone was queueing in the Main Street to leave Wembley to the tube, while we were waiting to be released in smaller groups some legend security guard started to play blur music from his tannoy/megaphone for us all to listen and sing to while waiting. Was fun and very nice of him!

the writer in me…she’s cooking…i think this is the longest thing ive written yet. i shall leave a sample below so i’m satisfied with sharing at least a little bit before i post the full thing (this to me takes place in the new batman adventures universe but feel free to imagine otherwise):

Dick is worried. Tim isn’t the chattiest kid but he can certainly hold a conversation. Dick’s tried everything: school, movies, TV, even casework. All he’s gotten are some unenthused grunts and hums. Tim may not biologically be Bruce’s kid but he sure does take after the guy. He cleaned up a bit before leaving and there’s a little bit of color back in his face but he still looks tired. Devastatingly so. Dick keeps stealing glances at his little brother in the passenger seat of the car. His arms are folded tightly against his abdomen, as if he’s protecting his stomach from something and a slight shiver courses through his body despite Tim bundling up with at least three layers, a scarf, a hat, and very thick gloves. The kid’s got to be cooking in his makeshift snowsuit, but then again…

They’re stopped at a red light. Five minutes out from the mall, three minutes out from the nearest urgent care.

Dick steals another glance towards Tim and decides to reroute to the clinic, get him checked out. Dick tuts quietly, it’s a shame he’s starting to come down with something right before Christmas, right before his first Christmas with them. Dick’s been in his shoes before; falling in a pond ice skating with Barbara. She managed to be just fine whereas he spent Christmas on Bruce’s couch laid up with pneumonia. He hardly remembers that Christmas from being so damn delirious but he remembers the warmth that wasn’t from fever. It was familial. The whole time he remembers being with someone. It was hard to deduce who was with him when but he was never alone. And if Tim was about to go through what he had been through, or something similar, he’d need them. But first, Dick just wanted to check for a fever in the first place. All signs pointed to one but Dick wasn’t sure yet. Careful not to wake the sleeping boy, Dick reaches out for Tim’s forehead.

HONK!

Dick quickly retracts his hand and places it back on the wheel, pressing the gas. To the mall. Tim doesn’t jolt awake but the car horn is clearly loud enough to stir him. He blinks slowly with a grimace, like he’s in pain.

“Are we there yet?” Tim asks, pitifully quiet. Like talking louder than a whisper would kill him.

“Almost, Tim, you can go back to sleep for a bit,” Dick says, taking a left towards the mall.

Tim makes a disapproving noise. “I wasn’t sleeping.”

Hm. Denial is the path he’s choosing here.

“Are you sure? Your eyes were closed and you weren’t talking. Telltale signs of sleeping to me,” Dick says lightly, trying not to come off like he’s interrogating Tim.

Tim laughs a little. “Nope, just resting my eyes.”

“Okay, old man. You’re too young to rest your eyes. Resting your eyes is for old people. Just look at Bruce.”

“Hn.”

“Oh my gosh, B, is that you?” This gets a more hearty laugh from Tim. It’s the most awake he’s looked since this morning.

Javan Ferret-Badger (Melogale orientalis)

Conservation Status- Least Concern

Habitat- Indonesia

Size (Weight/Length)- 2 kg; 40 cm

Diet- Bird eggs; Small mammals; Insects; Fruits

Cool Facts- The Javan ferret-badger is a mustelid native to very select regions of rainforest throughout Java and Bali. Small groups of these ferret-badgers seek out empty burrows to make their home but are capable of digging out their own tunnel system. Being mostly carnivorous, the Javan ferret-badger generally hunts on the ground but is capable of scaling extremely tall trees when searching for eggs and fruit. These little dudes are quick to adapt and often raid picnic sites and garbage cans in National Parks. Indonesia is heavily populated by humans, resulting in habitat destruction and agriculture but the Javan ferret-badger is as comfortable living in a city as it is in the rainforest.
