Don't you also tired about how people says that Apollo is a bad and cruel brother to Artemis for what "he did" with Orion? Even when that love story with Artemis and Orion happenned in the Astronomica by Higinus (a roman poet) and in the earlier versions of the myth Orion was killed by:

Gaea who sent the scorpion to kill him because he said that he could kill all the animals in Earth

Both (Artemis and Apollo) because the same thing with the animals but Gaea sent the twins to kill him and they sent the scorpion

Artemis because Orion tried to assault Oupis

Artemis because Orion tried to assault herself

Artemis because Orion was bothering her nymphs

Oh definitely! I was never on board with Orion being 'the only man Artemis ever loved' bullshit (that's Apollo ty).

I don't tend to discount the Roman myths, but since Hyginus's is VASTLY outnumbered by, as you said, these other five versions...I think we can ignore it.

Diana, pre-being-mixed-with-Artemis-times, WAS married to Janus. So I may be able to excuse this IF Hyginus was referring to THIS Diana.

HOWMEVER. Hyginus is writing about post-conflation Diana/Artemis. Who was NOT married to ANYONE because Virgil describes her as pretty similar to Artemis - including being a virgin goddess.

This is clearly NOT the older Diana. So no, he's not making some sort of connection or something here.

And as for the 'omg Apollo is a TERRIBLE brother!' thing - YOU ARE SO RIGHT IT'S SO ANNOYING.

some headcanons ahead (tw: well, angst and sensitive themes and graphic description of things)

🔆 Apollo visits graves of his children ever so often and talks to them about his life and etc. (he also shows the pictures of his new children to the gravestones)

🔆 Zeus cut Apollo's hair before throwing him out and draining him out of the powers in front of everyone (for me, Apollo's hair have a significance as an important part of him an the thing he treasures a lot; so, his father taking it away from him publicly must have mess him up a little bit)

🔆 Lester rarely ate while in the roadtrip and slept; he managed to have an argument with Meg about it and then beat himself up about it

🔆 Apollo is the one who tells the demigod's parents that their child is dead

🔆 Lester's most common way to self-harm is scratching himself violently, especially his palms as he can't stop seeing blood on them, just dripping down

🔆 He also had vivid nightmares of demigods/his loved ones dying in front of him and/or raising back from the dead with blacks voids instead of their eyes and blaming/taunting him for something; adding to that, he also got nightmares where Leto or Artemis with blank faces (no nose, mouth or eyes, etc.) would appear before him and just stand there, silently, listening to him trying to talk to them, to get them to reply to him

🔆 Apollo can feel the humans dying and stars burning out (it's a feeling he shares with Artemis, resembles a harsh blow of hot air in the lungs but then it turns ice-cold and ears ring loudly, as if the gas balls are screaming); he felt it with Jason, but just a faint feeling, not the full one: he also can feel how the humans lose their spark/potential/will to life and he grieves with them about it

*drum sound effect* I finally finished the designs for the Twin Rulers au!! I have individual ref sheets for them, but I'm going to post those separately so I can give you info on everyone without dumbing a bunch on you guys! This is mainly to give some info on the au as a whole. So *ahem"

~~~~~A Kingdom was under Fredbear's rule for quite some time until, he disappeared without a trace. His loyal staff felt that taking the throne would be wrong, they liked their assigned jobs! And talking his place didn't seem right. After a whole 2 months of the throne still being empty they realized one of them NEEDED to take the throne until Freddy was found. One of the jesters, Sun, hated the stress in the castle because of this. He agreed to take the throne until Freddy was found. His brother, Moon, knew this would be a horrible idea, but he couldn't let Sun do this alone. He suggested they co-ruled together. Relieved to finally have a decision made, they agreed.

After 3 weeks of the public announcement for the new rulers, there were several assassination attempts (more than usual). The staff searched for a royal guard for the boys. They went through 4 different guards in the past 2 months, each one betraying them in some form. They were losing hope in finding a dedicated guard. During another trial for a guard, a human entered, their skills were extraordinary! They became Sun and Moon's next royal guard. But the damage was done and they were apprehensive about them...at first. This guard showed genuine dedication for these rulers, protective and caring. They wouldn't let anything hurt them.~~~~~

So what i'm hearing is-

*(tbf though we don't know where exactly Apollo comes from but he's probably like. a mashup of a different gods. Paeon (mycenaean/greek). Smitheus (mycenaean/greek). Aplu (etruscan). Apaliunas (hittite). i've heard he has some Dorian background. he's been around lol)

I really love the idea that because Artemis and Apollo as deities don’t seem to have originated from the same cult as siblings and weren’t always associated with each other, instead later being worshipped together as siblings (and as twins, much later-ish!), you could write them as found family twins. Undoubtedly-platonic soulmates (this would fit bc some very old texts claim that they were married instead, which could be explained with “people assumed they were romantic soulmates until they firmly asserted that they were not remotely into each other like that at all.” (they are very scary) instead besties and found family siblings.) Given that their initial association with each other may have been so due to their similar domains at the time (disease, hunting, protection & death of the young, music and dance, as far as I can remember!) you could absolutely have them being freaky weird hunting and disease young gods who saw each other in the woods one time, realised they shared similar interests, hung out and IMMEDIATELY pack-bonded and went “I WILL NOW KILL FOR YOU!!” They are best friends and siblings and family and also so very codependent. They kept pointing at each other going “TWIN!! BUDDY!!” and the universe went “yeah sure” and they’ve been twins since for thousands of years!! Through everything!! Do not separate them!! AAAAAAAAAA

BloodMoon cooed from the other end of the phone.

You lightly smiled to yourself.

"Goodnight Bloodmoon...."

With that you hung up the phone, deciding to get all cozy and curled up in your bed, you spent what felt like an eternity trying but clearly failing at falling asleep!.

Groaning in annoyance, you tapped the screen on your phone.

"It's 8:50?!?."

You shoved your face into the pillow, accepting that your attempts at getting an early good night's sleep would fail...again....

Shuffling out of the bed, you stretched your arms out like a dinosaur and let out a big yawn, smiling to yourself, you decided that it would be a good time to get some fresh air...after all it was the best time for you sight wise- you were partially blind...if the room or atmosphere wasn't dimmed down light wise...then it could be a bit difficult to see...it was manageable of course but your vision wasn't at its peak like it could be in this moment.

Taking a step out the door, you groaned in slight annoyance as a car with its headlights on..extra bright!. Sat there in the parking lot, facing towards you-

A few blurs emerged, attempting to cloud your bettered vision.

Placing a hand over your eyes, you quickly turned the other way and began your walk around the neighborhood.

(Sorry if this part is a bit inaccurate for anybody🥺.)

You heard some rustling in an alleyway nearby, now normally you wouldn't come near that particular area...but something was telling you that this time was different...

Cautiously making your way to the noise, you slowly peeked your head around the corner-

Your eyes widened.

Someone was getting viciously attacked by a kitten!.

It's hisses indicated that it was a very angry kitty....

You marched your way forward but froze as the "Ows." And "Bad Kitty's." Sounded like BloodMoons voice...

You took a few steps forward, slightly hoping that it was him...you had never gotten a good look at him before..

*That'll be the day.* You thought to yourself and sighed.

"Bloodmoon?."

The figure froze, his hold on the kitten loosened, causing it to run over to you.

Rubbing against your leg, it's demeanor changed...purring, you picked it up and smiled!.

It was so tiny, you assumed it must have been the runt out of its liter... And it had the cutest striped plastered on its face!.

Its paws looked to have unique stripes on them as well...

You lightly chuckled at the kitten.

"Well aren't you quite the unique kitty?."

You lightly frowned as the voice that you had completely forgotten about spoke up.

"(Y/n?). Is that really you?"

(We're gonna say there are street lights so you're not in complete darkness)

Him taking a few steps forward, you held the kitten close to your chest, the kitten seeming to enjoy the attention...

Your mouth gaped a bit in awe, your free hand reached up to cup BloodMoons cheek.

BloodMoons expression changed from confusion to worry.

"What are you doing out here at this hour?. Don't you know it's dangerous?."

You sighed and glanced away for a moment, looking down at the kitten that was now asleep you smiled softly.

BloodMoons eyes widened a bit.

"Wait a second....(Y/n?)...Can you see me?."

You looked back up to BloodMoon and nodded.

"Yes!. I Can!."

You lightly giggled, feeling joy.

BloodMoons smile widened and he hugged you!.

Pulling away, he gave a light eskimo kiss.

The kitten stirred in its sleep, BloodMoon put a hand on it and gently patted its head.

He chuckled.

"I know this looks bad...but I can explain."

Bloodmoon put a hand to the back of his neck, scratching it in a nervous manner.

"I like to go out at night and I saw the kitten, and I thought- well that's one less kitten wandering the streets and- um...-

You giggled.

"It's okay...I always knew you were a softy...but I didn't know it was this bad."

You lightly joked.

Bloodmoon smiled, hugging you once more, he rested his chin on the top of your head.

"Maybe we should do this more often?. Hanging out when it's dark I mean-

Bloodmoon started to stumble over his words.

"Yeah...I would like that a lot actually...if we're being honest..."

You pull away giving a slightly guilty look.

"We could have been doing this for awhile if we had just been a tinsy bit better at communication...we would have known our terrible sleep schedules."

You laughed, Bloodmoon laughing along with you.

"I'm a night owl...I can't sleep but I try."

Bloodmoon deepened the hug.

"Me too."

You peaked my curiosity when you mentioned Apollon/Artemis as a 'married divine couple', because you're not the first person to mention that. Eustathius has also mentioned the marital aspects of Apollon/Artemis celebrated in an older tradition, and I've read similar things from other polytheists i.e., how they can be viewed as marital but are not sexual in the literal sense/Artemis reflected in Daphne/Cyrene/Hecate, etc. I love how there's always sth new to discover about their dynamic c:

Oh yes. I was really so surprised when i read that a lot of Ancient Greece worshipped them and saw them as married couple! Like, it wasn’t even some minority group thing. Considerable amount of people did that. I actually went yuuuck at first, but soon realised that this was worship, not mythology. And their marriage was not sexual. It is something formed as a bond between counterparts of opposite sex. He was Apollo, and she was “thea Apollonia”, the female Apollo. What Apollo represented with masculine power, Artemis represented those with feminine power. And their marriage shows intertwining of the elements of duality; masculinity and femininity with one another. Just like yin and yang. There was literally nothing sexual about it. Apollo and Artemis didn’t have any children resulting from their marriage.And yes! There was a time when Hecate used to be in the place of Apollo, as his sister and companion. Artemis either came and replaced her, or their identities were merged. I’ve also read people say that Apollo I fell in love with Cyrene because she looked and behaved like Artemis. The same was said for Daphne. In fact in psychology, they are used to describe relationships. Because they are twin souls, two halves of the same soul, and mirror images of one another. And so when a Artemis archetype finds an Apollo archetype, they both become incredibly intimate couple. I personally prefer to treat them as only siblings. But the people who go with the other one are valid too. And boy, am I glad that it was changed in mythology. Because these poets would have definitely sexualized them and done them wrong. Everything is much better outside mythology tbh lol. Apollo and Artemis are like married couple, but like only as best friends.
