We’re told that SD-6’s mission statement is “The retrieval and study of intelligence, both military and industrial, throughout the world, that is critical to the superiority and survival of the United States of America.” While this helps, explain, to a degree, why most of Sydney’s missions have dealt with tech retrieval and not dirtier jobs like assassinations or the subversion of other countries’ autonomies, and why Sydney has managed to remain so unsullied even after seven years of spy work, it feels like a retroactive explanation, rather than something that’s been the case all along. After all, Sydney and Dixon’s mission to stop the bombing at a world economic summit, on episodes 1.04 and 1.05, would not seem to have anything to do with intelligence retrieval, and yet here we are.

On the other hand, given that Kendall is allowed, with no irony whatsoever, to claim that SD-6’s willingness to kill “innocent civilians” should have been an indication that it was not affiliated with the C.I.A., it may just be that Alias has no idea what the C.I.A. actually does. Spoiler: The show finds it convenient to ignore what the C.I.A. actually does.

The SD in SD-6 stands for “Section Disparu,” which I choose to believe is a direct nod to La Femme Nikita and its Sections.

I’m saving the main argument for the season review, but I’d like to posit, for consideration, that season one Sydney is very much a Karen.

This episode has Kendall ask Sydney who knows of her double agent status, which is probably not something the series should bring up a lot, in a sequence of episodes in which its revealed that Sydney’s affiliations are not all that secret. That the Alliance is somehow both very big and very connected while still somehow not having people working in actual U.S. intelligence may be a necessary conceit, but that doesn’t mean the show should be bringing attention to it.

Sydney’s description of past Alliance terrorist actions, and the way she ties them to specific SD groups, raises a lot of questions. Is this only information she discovered afterwards? Has she always been aware of what other SD groups have been up to, and just believed that they were done for America, and were therefore justified?

This episode tacks another bit to The Prophecy introduced last episode: “This woman without pretense will have had her effect, never having seen the beauty of my sky behind Mount Subasio. Perhaps a single glance would have quelled her fire.” This is a crucial part of the episode, as Vaughn homes in on this as a potential way to prove Sydney was not the person Rambaldi was writing about. All well and good, but why was he the only one to think about this? That nobody else considered it is a major stealth indictment of U.S. intelligence.

Kendall calls Sydney’s mother a traitor, which makes little sense, given that she never expressed any particular loyalty to the United States or ever claim to work towards its interests. She’s a spy and a liar, but not a traitor. He further qualifies this statement by saying that “she appeared to be one thing but was actually another,” which is so close to being insightful, given that this is precisely what Sydney has been doing all throughout the series, but doesn’t get explored further.

One of the more interesting things about Alias is just how in tune it was to network notes, and how willing it was to compromise itself in order to meet them. Think of J.J. Abram’s The Rise of Skywalker, and how it tried to be what it believed people wanted at the expense of an actual satisfying story, but applied to a TV series across several years. This episode, while not the most glaring or most egregious example of that sort ethos—one could actually make practical cases for its existence—still feels odd, in retrospect, and is a solid reminder of just how different Alias could often be from what was airing at the time.

That said, weird structure aside—and again, it’s worth noting that the weirdness is largely about the timing—this isn’t a bad episode. The recap, at least, allows us to glean a little bit of information on Sydney’s early years, and about the Alliance. Terry O’Quinn is excellent in a role that doesn’t actually allow him to do that much, the actual new stuff moves important storylines forward in a big way. The episode will never be a favorite, but I don’t resent its existence, either.
