Do you have a first aid kit?
@summersumz That actually sounds like a really good kit!
When I’m building out a kit, I don’t try and focus on what’s in it, as much as what I want it to do and the injuries I expect to encounter. One of the worst things I see is that you see **300 PIECE KIT!!!!!** and 295 of those pieces are individual bandaids :|
But what you’ve got is so much better, because you do have bandages! You do have splints! And you realize that taking vitals is also important.
So many times the things we need the most are simply to control bleeding with pressure, take care of a burn with a hydrogel patch and later some silvex, and also treat basic ailments like dehydration.
My EQ kit includes water, dry/canned food, flashlights, but also a solar panel for charging my phone.
One thing most people don’t think about is a demolition (demo) kit. I was in the Northridge EQ and the #1 thing that was a problem was shit in the air, shit falling everywhere from high rises that had cracked windows, and most importantly... doors jammed! You couldn’t get out of a lot of houses and buildings. Because of the shaking and everything, even those places who didn’t have damage, still had issues with door frames twisting and becoming un-openable.
So it’s a good idea to keep hard hat, safety glasses, masks, gloves, door wedges, a pry tool, and mallet somewhere accessible in your bedroom.
I was lucky I had an old tire iron in my truck, because that thing worked like a champ that day to open up my grandmothers bedroom door and front door. I kicked it, I ran my shoulder into it, I even took off the knob and all and it wouldn’t budge! Same with my fathers house. It had a slight crack in the chimney but the back bedroom door and the front door were impossible to open.
It’s also important to have a gas and water shut off tool if you live in EQ land!
Right now I’m rebuilding out my first aid kit... and I want it to be a bit more robust than usual because of COVID. I don’t want to have to call 9-1-1 if I don’t have to, as you can’t trust firefighters to be vaccinated.
So I’m adding some burn kit supplies, and some trauma stuff like splints, triangle bandages, and hemostatic gauze to stop bleeders.

@summersumz and how was it????
I always want to hear that part! Like... my first BIG concert was Depeche Mode in 87 and ... Holy shit... it was electric. I was BUZZZZING for days after.
I wasn’t ready. I didn’t understand.
I knew the music... and I’d been to a lot of live music because dude, I grew up in SoCal in the 80s ... you couldn’t sneeze without a punk or new wave band playing in someone’s back yard or at the beach or park or we’d just find a place ... even pre-teens knew what was up. You didn’t have to go into Hollywood... the best shows were at empty homes throughout the San Fernando valley with empty pools to skate at or along the beaches.
But then I saw DM... and dude... It was at the Forum..... and the whole place was packed and everyone was amped, singing along, and Dave Gahan was ON.... such a showman.... and their catalog is such an interactive one....
I thought because I knew the music it’d be ok, fun, and not worth the REALLY expensive tickets..... because meh.. you can just listen to the tapes... ya know?
But it was so different... so interactive... so vibrant.... and a real show! Worth every penny.
I saw them a few more times and each time it was incredible, and it really made you feel the difference between seeing a punk show in a small venue... something intimate and violent... or even a small new wave or fun ska band that was just like friends and close and energetic....
But the first BIG one... can be life changing if it’s the right one.

For Brenny and Carolyn,
Yesterday I helped our new SLC neighbours move a shipping container full of stuff into their home. Many rectangles, many records, many books, and many stairs. I am so sore today, but I was happy to feel useful. I ran a mile and a half with some jerks this morning, and went back out to do my own five mile W4D2 in the rain.
I really liked what you said about The Internet and collective goodness. I like the way we lift each other up. I like the way you lift me up. It helps to be reminded that the world is not so big and our humans are not so far and the happy is good and the sad hurts so much but we are not alone. Collective goodness. Rivers and roads.
Here's my mom and the tiny lady doing the chicken dance for me.
I love you, so much.
