Happy summer solstice everyone! I want to celebrate the beginning of summer by posting this picture of the most beautiful peonies that I have ever bought. I got them at the farmer’s market in Langeais, located in the Loire Valley in France about ten days ago. I think their burgundy, wine red, plum or whatever you want to call their color is absolutely gorgeous and the flowers were really humongous! I like to be honest these peonies weren’t cheap, but they brought me three days of bliss on our vacation in France and totally worth it. You have to spoil yourself from time to time, don’t you think? Today starts Ivana Kupala Івана Купала. It is an old Slavic Festival celebrating Summer Solstice, which in the Julian Calendar starts today, July 7. There are many rituals and traditions, one is to pick wild flowers and place them on your gates to the house in order to bring good luck and fortune to the people who live there. As far as I can tell these rituals are all a little different depending on the country in which you live and also the region or village. The rituals and celebrations as a whole indicate the change of summer into the fall harvest season.
