December 12 - Part 2

It was like déjà vu, walking into the mines; it was hard to believe that their nearly ill-fated adventure was only a few months past. It felt like a lifetime ago, even though the harrowing encounter with the slime boss was still fresh in their minds.

For Abigail of course it was just a brand new adventure, uncharted territory waiting to be explored. “Alright, so how does this work?” Her impatience dripped from every word as the boys filed in behind her. “Do we sign in or something?”

“Yeah—er, well,” Ashe stopped at the sight of the unmanned rescue station, “usually, at least… that’s… weird. I could have sworn that Ellie would be here today…” For Abby’s sake, he clarified, “Usually there’s someone here to check us in.”

“Oh, you’d have loved her Abby.” Sam elbowed her with a grin. “She was a real cutie. Real shy, too. Totally your type.”

Her face fell. “Really? Damn it. I’ll have to sneak up here on another day and try to meet her. Penny’s the only other girl in town that I’d consider and she’s too into Maru to pay me any mind…” She sighed. “You boys have it so easy.”

“Well,” Ignoring that, Sebastian blew on his frigid fingers to warm them as Ashe looked over the log book, “what’s the plan now, Ashe? Are we still gonna go in or what?”

“… It… should be okay.” There was real hesitation in his voice, though his uncertainty was eased somewhat by the sight of Percy’s signature on today’s page. Besides, if something did happen to go wrong, he did have that as a last resort. “I think as long as we sign in we’ll be okay.”

Abby cocked a brow. “Why do we need to sign in if there’s no one here?”

“Trust me, Joja will know and you’ll be banned in a heartbeat.”

He scrawled his name hastily in the entry beneath Percy’s and stepped back so that his friends could do the same. While they did that, he stepped behind the station and retrieved a box full of safety equipment for them to make use of. After what happened last time—not to mention this growing sense of foreboding-- he didn’t want to take any chances.

By the time he returned to the sign in desk, Abby had finished adding her name to the book. At least, he had expected it to be her name, but instead—

“Really?” Sebastian was wholly unimpressed. “You used your Discord handle?”

“Like I’m dumb enough to put my actual name in here.” She twirled the pen between her fingers, wearing a cheeky grin all the while. “I’m not gonna risk mom and dad finding out. They’d flay me alive.”

Both Sebastian and Sam exchanged a long look; after a second, Sam snatched the pen from her and they both hastily amended their sign ins.

“Speaking of Discord,” she pointed a painted nail at Ashe, “you need to give me yours so I can invite you to our server. I’ve been meaning to ask you for awhile now but it always kept slipping my mind. And don’t even think of giving me that ‘I’m too busy’ b.s.,” she added as the farmer opened his mouth, “I know for a fact that you’re scrambling for stuff to do now that winter’s here.”

“I-I wasn’t going to say that--” he absolutely was, “--I was just going to say that I don’t have a Discord.”

“Well you have a phone, right? Or a laptop?”

He shook his head. “Not anymore.” That one day of rotten luck had seen to that.

“… Wait, really? But—” She was aghast. “How do you survive?”

Sebastian paused in the middle of strapping a hard hat onto his head. “Really? You’re just now learning this?”  

“I already said that it kept slipping my mind!” She strode forward and grasped Ashe’s face with both hands. “Seriously, how do you not have at least one of those things in this day and age?!”

Now Ashe was feeling quite embarrassed. “I just—never have the time to use them, so there wouldn’t be a point to replacing—”

“Oh, I so know what you’re getting for the Feast this year.”

“N-No no, actually no, please don’t—” He paused. “Wait. Feast?”

Sam tugged off his gloves and tugged on a pair of work ones. “Yeah. The Feast of the Winter Star.”

“… What’s that?”

“Oh, right, you’re from the city. It’s just another festival. It’s how Pelican Town celebrates Christmas.” He grinned. “There’s a big feast, and everyone does a Secret Santa present exchange. Nothing too crazy, but it’s kinda fun to shop for a gift for a different person every year.”

Sebastian grimaced. “Yeah, it’s fun until you get Haley as your secret buddy. I got her last year.”

“And I got her the year before.” Abby strapped on some protective gear, but stopped short of the hard hat. “God, that sucked. She totally shit on the gift I got her.”

“Haley does kinda have rich white girl tastes,” Sam nodded.

Even if she did… “I know that she can be… hard to deal with,” Ashe fidgeted with his own hard hat, “but she’s not that bad…”

All three of them looked at him like he’d just said the earth was flat.

“Yeah, she’s over the top, and she’s loud, and she isn’t afraid to speak her mind, but… she’s a person too, y’know? And she knows that nobody likes her…”

Now their attention shifted from him to each other. “Are you feeling alright?” Sam finally asked.

“Huh? Yeah, of course… I just… Y’know what, nevermind.” He slapped his own cheeks and unstrapped the pickaxe from his back. “Why are we standing around talking when there’s loot to be had?”

The sudden about-face didn’t go unnoticed by his friends. It was eerily similar to the one he pulled the last time—compounded by him just not seeming like himself recently. But it was hard to have a conversation with someone’s back, and so they had to hastily follow him into the elevator leading into the left mineshaft—well, Sebastian and Abby followed, dragging a reluctant Sam behind them. The blonde had a severe case of claustrophobia and fear of elevators.

“This is new.” Sebastian said, with Sam clinging to him for dear life as the elevator began its rickety descent into the depths of the shaft.

“Mhm. Joja installed it… last month, I think?”

“Damn. You’ve been hitting this place that hard?”

Ashe grinned meekly.

“Why am I not surprised?”

“Because I have no sense of restraint and this is par for the course for me?”

“… Actually, yeah. That just about sums it up.” He patted Sam’s back. “You’re okay, Sam. Nothing’s gonna happen. You can let go of me now.”

“Y-You don’t know that for sure!” If anything, Sam only clung to him harder, and Sebastian just rolled his eyes and put up with it. There was no getting out of that vicelike grip once it was locked.

 Even though it was the bastion of the very thing that he was once addicted to, Shane still made it a habit to visit the Saloon after work. It was a place to go that wasn’t straight back to ranch—of course he loved the place, but there was something suffocating about heading straight home after an eight hour hell shift stocking shelves. And the free sparkling juice that Gus would slip him was nice. It helped with the cravings.

“Hey Shane!” Emily was the first to greet him as he stepped in through the swinging double doors. She usually was, always with a smile. “Glad to see you! I wasn’t sure if you would be up to visiting with all that snow out there.”

“I mean, this place is right on the way home, so it’s not like I have to go out of my way or anything.” He took a seat at the bar, and on cue Gus set a cup of sparkling something in front of him—might have been cranberry just on first sniff. “Thanks, Gus. This a new drink or something?”

“It is, it is.” The portly fellow was all smiles as well as he cleaned a mug. “Courtesy of our favorite farmer. I thought you ought to have the honors of giving it the first tasting.”

“Well shit, I better not say anything bad about it.” He took a swig and let the flavor mull over his tongue. It was equal parts sweet and tart, and nicely carbonated—it tasted vaguely like the fruity drinks that he once was into, back in his edgy high school years. “That’s pretty nice.”

“As expected of produce from Ashe’s farm.” Emily leaned against the counter. “Speaking of, how’s he doing lately? It feels like an age since I last saw him.”

“Fine, as far as I can tell. Still a crazy busybody always doing something.” He sighed and swirled the deep red liquid around in the cup. “Won’t lie, I’m starting to get real worried about him.”

“Oh? How come?”

“Just—how do I put it? He just doesn’t seem like himself lately. He’s saying and doing all the usual stuff, but… iunno,” he shrugged his shoulders, “I just get this feeling that it’s an act.”  

“Well, if anyone could tell it’d be you. You know more about him than anyone else.”

“But that’s just it!” He threw his hands up. “He’s so tight-lipped that even after—fuck, how many months has he been here--?”

“Nine months,” Gus answered, bemused.

“Thank you-- after nine months, I know basically fuck-all about him.” With his fingers he began to count what he did know, “I know he lived near the capitol, I know he used to work for Joja, and I know—well, I’m pretty sure that his mom died. That’s it. Fuck, I don’t even know if he has allergies. That’s bad, right?”

Emily tapped her finger against her lips, contemplating. “Mmm… Not necessarily? Doesn’t it just mean that that stuff hasn’t come up yet? I mean, are you expecting him to just sit you down and go ‘this is my life story’ like in a badly written movie or book?”

“No, what—of course not.”

“Well then, what’s the problem? If it really bothers you so much, talk to him about it. Tell him that you would love to hear more things about him from time to time.” Playfully she poked him with her elbow. “Some people just need that little extra nudging to open up, after all.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right on that… Maybe I can get the ball rolling on one of our dates. Oh, speaking of,” he set his glass down and turned to Gus, “can I reserve the back room for the next few Sundays?”

Once more Gus looked amused. “Are you finally going to take me up on that offer I made when you first got together?”

“Maybe. This is literally the only thing I could think of to make him take a break, short of strapping him to a chair in front of a TV.”

Emily hid a laugh behind her hand. “I’m glad you’re choosing this instead of that. Maybe you can talk him into stopping by sometimes, too. I miss that sunshine he brings with him.”

“I’ll try, but no promises.” Shane finished off the drink and paid for the reservations. Honestly, he missed that sunshine too…

Chapter 2: The Marriage Contract

"...And he has grown up so much, of course! A lovely young man. And with wonderful prospects, too, you would of course have seen in the papers about his engagement to Henry Shawdun?" My mother tittered over a glass of brandy, waving her fan freely at the assembled ladies in the room. She was a tiny woman, and the generous cream-colored sofa she sat in almost swallowed her.

In my single-minded desperation to get home, I had forgotten that she would be entertaining today. I had hired the first hackney that would take me and ran into the house, winded and rumpled. Her friends turned to look at me, genteel smiles freezing at my harried appearance.

"Philip?" The couch released my mother as she stood to look at me. "I thought you were spending the day with Henry?" Her tone told me that all her assembled friends knew I was to spend the day with Henry and I had better come up with a convincing story fast.

"He started feeling quite ill, I'm afraid. Heat exhaustion, Henry thinks. He sent me home post-haste to refresh myself so I would not feel the same." I laughed with a dry throat. "A day like this, we were so lost in each other we didn't stop for even a sip of water. He sends his apologies." My own words were giving me heat exhaustion. I put my hand to my forehead. "But I'm afraid he was too right in his fears, because I do feel a bit of a headache. Do excuse me ladies, I should lie down." With a small, polite bow and a pointed look at Mother, I headed to the stairs with as much grace as a dusty coat and flyaway hair would allow.

I did have a headache. I hadn't drunk enough that day, and had spent the better part of the afternoon dodging through odd nooks of the city in my mad dash for freedom.

Or the illusion of freedom. I knew at the end of the day, no matter how far I ran, he would eventually appear, waving the marriage contract in my face with my hopeful parents and a solemn priest in tow.

Truly there was nothing much wrong with Henry. He was rich and generous with his funds. And handsome; my description at the dress shop was accurate in every way except the slight build and the freckles. As for build, he had a naturally strong build, tall and muscular. And as for the freckles, those were mine. And if I could give them to him, I would.

No, it wasn't Henry's appearance or lack of eligibility that made me resent him so. It was his personality--smug, self-assured, cocky--and the painful fact that I was inescapably tied to him for the rest of my life. His every smirk reminded me that we would be shackled together, and there was nothing I could do about it. When he entered a room it became a jail, and my every dash from his company was my own small way of fighting to breathe.

There had to be a way to break this engagement. Surely the contract came with its own set of loopholes, how's and heretofore’s, something .

If only I could get a glimpse of it. There were only two copies, one held by my father in his private deposit box and another held in the Shawdun mansion, presumably under lock and key. I refused to go to Shawdun mansion except under duress; I hadn't been there since the engagement dinner two years ago except when dragged by my parents for social to do's.

Desperation required I make an exception. If I so much as made an innocent inquiry as to our copy of the contract my father would become suspicious. Nothing would get in the way of him being able to continue his wanton lifestyle. I went to rest with this idea firmly in my mind.

And woke up the next morning with a plan.

Putting on my finest cravat and hose, I reached for one of my nicer suits of clothing, gritting my teeth as I peeled off the tailor's card with Henry's name on it. If I were to show up unannounced, I would have to do all else I could to make a good impression. And pray that Henry was in a good mood and ready to oblige my unusual request.

I grabbed a gentleman's taxi this time, riding in clean comfort to the Shawdun family's massive mansion. They lived right next to the Countess in town and,title or not, were one of the most influential names in the city. The townhouse had a massive garden, with a long path leading to the front of the house.

"Is Mr. Henry Shawdun at home this morning?"

"I'm afraid Master Henry is out visiting. Is he expecting you?"

I thought quickly. "Ah, yes. Indeed he is. We arranged to meet in his study not five minutes from now. If you would be so kind as to escort me there, I'm more than happy to wait for him to conclude his other business and meet me then; he told me himself I was free to make myself comfortable."

The butler nodded thoughtfully and led me through the house. "The young master Henry doesn't have a study, but I imagine he meant the business study. I will seat you there and send someone to inform you when he arrives."

"Thank you." I murmured, excitement warming the pit of my stomach. This could not have gone better! The butler led me into the study and shut the door behind him.

As soon as I heard the latch click, I stood. No telling how much time I would have before Henry arrived back home. I looked at the papers littering the top of the desk, but none were the one I needed. Then I gently opened the drawers one a time, rifling gently and making sure to replace everything exactly where I'd left it. Nothing.

In desperation, I glanced around the room, felt under the desk for a secret door, cabinet, a nook where a roll of paper could be hiding. My eye caught on a painting of Henry next to his father. They both looked solemnly at me, as though judging my every move. Henry, unlike myself, had inherited his father's traits, large built and dark hair with piercing blue eyes. I had inherited my mother's: small, though not as slight as she, with hazel eyes and freckles. I looked away from the photo, scowling.

Next to the painting on the wall was an ornate parchment, framed in a dark burnished wood. It looked like a certificate of sorts, signed at the bottom and stamped with two seals in blue wax. One was a simple merchant's seal, a hammer over a crate, that I recognized as the Shawdun family seal. The other one was... Ours.

I walked over to the frame, squinting to read the tangled script. Surely this had to be it!  

" In exchange for debts accrued over a lifetime, and the provision of a comfortable life, Sir Roland Edward Mallory does promise his son, Philip Alexander in marriage to Henry Matthias Shawdun. In the union, Henry Matthias will take on the Mallory name and all titles owed to the family. The family endowment and all honors at court will be shared by the two as wedded partners.

This is a declaration of engagement. The engagement cannot be annulled lest all forgiven debts be recounted and accrued to the Mallory name in payment of debt, in addition to ten thousand pounds in payment for embarrassment to the Shawdun family name."

I sighed in defeat. Never in a thousand years could we pay such a sum. Blearily I read on.

However, if Henry Shawdun conceives a child with another partner, thus performing a breaking of trust and shaming Philip Alexander, the marriage will be annulled and all debts assumed by the Shawdun family shall remain their responsibility, and the ten thousands pounds penalty will not apply. However, no further assets will be sent to the Mallory household and all ties broken thereforth.

I felt a glimmer of hope at that. Such a debt I at least had a prayer of paying.

In addition, if Mr. George Shawdun or Mr. Henry Shawdun were to annul the engagement himself, the above would apply, and they would owe two hundred and fifty pounds to the Marjory Family for embarrassment accrued.

The bottom of the contract was signed by my father Aloysius Marjory and Henry's father, George Shawdun. I paid little attention to their signatures. Henry would never agree to annul our engagement, but if I could somehow put him in the path of a beautiful woman... Afterwards I would be near penniless, a working man with two aging parents in need of support, but I could do it. I would do it if it meant not spending my life tied permanently to that cursed man, at the disposal of his family and their every whim. The title-hungry new money would not be sucking me dry.

Gleefully, I turned to leave. I could feign a headache and get out of the house before Henry even arrived. I reached for the doorknob when it rattled under my hand and the large form of George Shawdun himself filled the doorway.

He was not as tall as Henry, and far rounder in the middle. His hair was silvering, but had not receded in the slightest, still spilling over his forehead in the fashion many of the rich merchant's class had taken to wearing about town. His eyes regarded me solemnly over a set of wire glasses. I felt like a crate of merchandise opened for his inspection.

"Young Sir Mallory. I wasn't expecting you here."

I summoned my most innocent and charming grin. "Mr. Shawdun. I came here by request of your son, but he never arrived for the appointment, and now I must return home to attend to my mother."

He sniffed at me curiously. "Of course. You will of course be attending our small to-do this weekend with Henry. I trust you saw the invitation? Our footman told me it was delivered straight into your hand." He smiled down at me, expectantly

Disgusting social climbers!

I fought up a grin. "Of course, I wouldn't miss it for the world." Unless Henry is unfit to be wed to me any longer.

Henry would conceive with a woman before the weekend, I was determined. It was only a matter of which one.

I pondered this problem as the same butler escorted me to the front door and into a waiting carriage. Certainly there was no shortage of women who would be eager to be wed into one of the richest families. I had already spent many a social gathering suffering their ire, glowering at me as though my attachment to one of the most eligible bachelors in the county was somehow my doing or something I was remotely pleased about.

Two particularly charming and aggressive specimens came to mind; Lady Evelyne Egret, and Lady Burnett de Witt. Of all the young women I knew who were eligible and jealous, they were as shameless as they were well attached. I quickly added Miss Lyla Havisham to the list, as she was a cunning, sharp woman who would be motivated to social climb. Any one of them being caught in an indiscretion would mean a quick marriage and my freedom.

When the taxi arrived home, I already had the beginnings of a plan in my head. A drawing room gathering. Intimate, low lighting. Wine and spirits flowing freely. Poetry, to feed the romantic air of the room. And then I would be called urgently away late in the evening, leaving a very drunk, hopefully aroused Henry alone in the company of three equally ambitious,  determined young ladies. The rest would surely take care of itself.

Chuckling, I hustled to my writing desk and went about writing the invitations.

Freedom

This is the third part of the Outfoxed Series, my Lila Salt series that I started on a whim and got a ton of notes and likes. This is the last bit following the main plot of the series, which is the exposure of Lila and the fallout of that exposure, but I may consider exploring other POV’s like I did with Mrs. Rossi in the side story ‘Shattered’ posted to AO3.

Lila's arrest sent shock waves through Collège François Dupont, from the sexual harassment charges to the truancy and even the unlawful photography, anyone associated with her on a friendly level was scrutinized and that meant the class of the former teacher Caline Bustier.

Thanks to the school board there had been numerous counselors and therapists on site, to combat potential akuma victims from the accusations and anger that were sure to be part of the fallout, with a new security system installed with no blank spots in any hallways or rooms. Excluding bathrooms, of course, but there were cameras above bathroom doors pointing straight down to track who entered and when.

Nino wasn't at all surprised when Adrien was transferred out of their class, his Father definitely blamed them for playing a part in the mess and the teen DJ couldn't fault him for once, it was easy to see from the glimpses in the halls that his best bud was happier than ever now. He had managed to apologize to both Adrien and Marinette, telling them he wasn't asking forgiveness but that he wanted them to know he now realized he screwed up and had to work on some things, the pair had thanked him and that had been it.

As much as he wanted to go back to how things were, when they were all together and Alya was scheming her plans to hook them up, Nino was more than aware that if he wanted them to trust him again it had to be on their terms and he was okay with that. He'd believed in Lila because Alya did, no matter how strange the stories sounded, his girlfriend always researched everything so if she wasn't questioning then he didn't have a reason to.

Or so he thought, but Alya wasn't perfect and he'd made a mistake by not questioning it himself, Nino had promised he would do and be better for himself and his girl as well as his friends.

Alya walked into the room late, sliding a note onto their teacher's desk, after her blow-up in the cafeteria at Adrien the school put her on mandatory counseling sessions. For as tenacious and driven as she was, something he admired, Alya was stubborn and quick-tempered; in this case, though, she refused to allow any blame on herself. Lila was the liar in this and Alya had been loyal, Marinette hadn't told her the whole truth, Adrien hadn't told her the whole truth; but it was still Alya that hadn't done her research or trusted her friend.

He slid a note onto her desk, a simple love poem he'd found, he wasn't ready to give up on her as a girlfriend and he knew that once she accepted she'd made a mistake that she'd do the right thing and at least apologize.

He was a sweetheart, someone truly amazing that was far too mature for his age, Nino's poem made her heart race even if she'd seen it on Juleka's facebook page two weeks earlier. For the first time in a long time she felt lighter, her pocket no longer weighed down with her cellphone, the device submitted for evidence for her own lawsuit against Lila.

Aya wasn't an idiot, she hadn't believed a damn thing Lila Rossi was putting out, but she was too quick tempered and had moved far too quickly against the Italian. Giving the new girl a chance to fess up had led to a rabbit hole of trouble, Lila hadn't even tried playing clean and as soon as she had her ammo it was over, Alya hadn't thought the girl would follow her around for months in secret while she'd supposedly been traveling.

Lila had gotten video proof of Alya sneaking around with Nino, steamy make-outs in fairly public (though not in the open) places while they were supposed to be babysitting, and worst of all she'd gotten a series of photos with Alya and Nino in a VERY compromising position in the school.

'All I want is your support, you don't have to believe me but you do have to make the others believe me, I won't tell anyone or show these otherwise.'

It sucked but Alya had danced to Lila's song and done what she asked without question, it would ruin her and Nino's records and their parents would have a meltdown, she expected Lila to eventually make a mistake after all and even if Alya supported her that didn't mean one of the others was trapped by her web. Alya had tried hard to support Marinette, Lila's chosen target she soon learned, but after the first attempt at getting the designer expelled had failed Lila wasn't giving any leeway.

The second attempt worked far too well, after Lila took the picture of the funeral right from Alya's phone, and the reporter found herself doing the unspeakable at Lila's behest. Every article had her in tears and the public backlash made her sick to her stomach, if she wasn't terrified of the result from Lila it might've been easier to delete the Ladyblog entirely, and finally it all drew to a close with Lila's arrest.

Finding out Adrien had known all along, that he'd just said nothing, had ignited a fire in Alya that she couldn't extinguish and she tore into him for his inaction; the entire time he could have done something, he could have saved her from her own ruin. But now, finally, Alya had come clean on every last detail to her parents and the school; her parents, as disappointed and hurt as they were, contacted the AGRESTE lawyers with their own evidence of blackmail to add to Lila's charges once they spoke with Officer Raincomprix.

Nino was still in the dark, though not for long since his parents were contacted too in regards to the nature of the pictures and video, and several people had said her intentions to protect her boyfriend were noble even if she had done wrong. But Alya had a long way to go in order to forgive herself before she'd ask forgiveness of anyone else, she started with hand-written letters to be mailed out to a lot of people, her phone and computer taken and she was under house arrest for quite a while per her parents.

Focusing on the board, as their teacher talked about their assignment for geography, Alya scribbled her notes as the rest tapped and typed away on their tablets.

"BREAKING REPORT

BLACKMAIL CHARGES CONFIRMED AGAINST LILA ROSSI

As of Wednesday, we have word that more charges are being added to the already extensive list for Lila Rossi. The Italian student, living in France on a VISA due to her mother's work, has already been accused of a long list of charges by both the Agreste family and the Dupain-Cheng family as well as the school board. Sexual harassment, truancy charges, unlawful photography, bullying a French citizen, and now there is evidence surfacing of blackmailing a French citizen.

The Césaire family have come forward with very serious evidence that indicates Alya Césaire, the founder of the Ladyblog, was being blackmailed by Lila Rossi the entire span of her time at Francios Dupont and during the period she was skipping classes. E-mails, text messages, and threatening messages through Facebook and Snapchat depict Rossi as having compromising photographs and videos of Césaire and her boyfriend that could result in their own criminal charges.

When we asked Otis Césaire his thoughts on the matter he had this to say:

"My daughter was wrong in her actions, I will not try and say she was only a victim because she could have come to us before this started and we would have helped her, but I am appalled that the school officials were so easily fooled and allowed a girl to come in and manipulate them so thoroughly. They were supposed to protect their students, regardless of how much money the families of those kids have, but I see that their concern was elsewhere."

Alya Césaire herself is being reviewed for her own criminal charges based on the content of the photographs that were found on Lila Rossi's devices and has asked that any charges that might be applied to her boyfriend be dropped as she was the primary instigator for each incident. The AGRESTE legal team is asking that any other students, parents, or parties victim to any schemes of Lila please step forward so that they can compile a full list of charges and get this case closed."

The voice of Nadja Chamak played softly in the background of the office as Mayor Armand D'Argencourt adjusted his tie and looked around the bleak space, it was only a matter of time before the school board pursued the Mayor for his own corruption and Andre had paid out a hefty sum to avoid prison before being removed from office, the new election had come and Armand had taken post over Madam Lauren Richards.

As one of the few teachers not involved with Rossi, aside from Physical Education, he hadn't been questioned much and even then he never once allowed her any special treatment; if she cited an injury he made her go to the nurse, any conditions she claimed he would ask Miss Kensington for proof and there never was any. But his claims and reports to Phineas had gone unanswered and blown aside, as any with Miss Bourgeios often had, his reports to the school board had been added to the Dupain-Cheng case as had Priscille's own reports.

A knock on the door made him clear his throat. "Come in." He left the office door open, unlike the Mayor had, the knocking was just a courtesy. His secretary, Monsieur Hemsley, held a stack of papers and folders.

"I'm afraid to say there is a lot more of this, sir, but this is the start of what Mayor Bourgeios cited as unnecessary for Paris." The man looked apologetic and Armand shook his head, accepting the stack of things with no ill-feelings.

It was a new challenge. "I want to start with everything from the past year, Thomas, I've no doubt there were plenty of things he ignored or blew out to keep his hotel running and himself in office." Finding the corruption was the first step, all the business owners with an in that were paying into the Bourgeios to keep themselves on top, Armand wasn't going to fail his family's post or his city.

He glanced at his calendar. "Remember to keep tomorrow afternoon clear, I've got fencing to teach at the Agreste manor after school hours tomorrow." Thomas nodded and went to bring the next batch of papers to him.

"It's been quiet."

Sitting on top of Notre Dame, legs swinging freely as the lights illuminated the dark city below, Chat couldn't help but hum in agreement to the soft statement his partner whispered. With Lila's arrest and the continual charges being brought forward against her, as well as the fallout from the students, he'd expected much more in the way of akuma. "It's worrying, as much as I don't want it to be." He wanted it to be a good sign that there hadn't been problems with Hawkmoth, he wanted it to be an indicator that they were due for some peace and quiet, but they couldn't relax.

Ladybug's eyes were focused on the light at the Town Hall where his fencing instructor, now Mayor, was working diligently through years of corruption from Chloe's father in office. "I've been talking with Tikki and the other Kwami, they all agree that something feels... off. We have a lot of theories but nothing concrete, if I wasn't so afraid to bring the Miracle Box out in public I'd have brought it tonight with me." He almost choked with how deep a breath he drew in, that was not at all what he'd expected.

"You want- but you're the Guardian. Why would my-"

"Your thoughts and opinions are always important to me, Chat, we're partners. You just have horrible timing to be a flirty tomcat as well as an issue with the word no."

He opened his mouth to argue but didn't, she was right, he had no valid excuse for his behavior in the past. "I, uh, you don't have to worry about that LB. I have a girlfriend, outside the mask I mean, I won't tell you her name but she's incredible and I'm really happy with her." Chat could feel her looking at him and her expression was soft, fond and friendly, love without the romantic aspect of it.

Such a familiar look and he didn't even know why. "I'm really happy for you, Chat, you deserve someone who brings you happiness." He felt his cheeks warm, Marinette made him more than happy, he felt loved and like he was home when he was by her side.

But his expression schooled into something playful as his partner looked away, her own face pink. "Oh, is that a blush? Thinking of your own special boy?" Her scowl was lacking any real anger or annoyance and it twisted into a bright grin.

"The boy I like, the one I told you about, he asked me out and we're together now." At one point that would have hurt him, made his chest ache, but it just indicated how incredible Marinette was that he didn't feel anything but happiness.

His mouth spit out the phrase before he could even stop it. "Oh? So, the Bug has her Boo? I guess when you're on a date you're Bugandboo?" Her squawk of outrage had him laughing as he got up to run, delighting in just being able to play, a few people who were still awake cheered him on while others admonished him playfully for irritating the heroine.

By the time patrol ended he was sporting a sore arm, a hoarse voice from laughing, and the annoyance of being filmed falling off a roof into a dumpster when one of Monsieur Ramirer's pigeons flew in his face. But it was a good night and he promised to keep his eyes open for trouble in the form of butterflies.

Marinette knocked and waited for an answer, meeting surprised expressions, her own lips a flat line. "Can I...?" The nod was gentle as Marlena hugged her, whispering an apology of her own, but Marinette didn't blame her at all. Nora's hug was more like a wrestling move, cracking a few joints too, the twins were subdued for once. Walking to the open door, since Alya wasn't allowed to have her room closed off at all, Marinette knocked on the frame.

"Just cleaning my- oh." Alya emerged from her mess of clothes, the closet's contents emptied on the floor and sorted into piles, her expression guarded but somehow open.

Before she could lose her nerve, the designer cleared her throat. "I'm angry at you, for not telling me the truth about what was going on and then attacking my parents when you could have come clean before it got that far, but I'm sorry that you were a victim to her schemes too. I can't forgive you, at least not right now, but I respect you for trying to protect Nino even if I was the sacrifice because I don't know if I would have done anything different in your situation." Alya's eyes were watering and Marinette knew she was close to crying too, she'd decided that she wasn't going to hold onto grudges or anger any longer and had spent the day visiting her former classmates.

Part of moving on was deciding what emotions to hold onto, Wayzz and Longg had helped her come to terms with her lingering doubts and hurt emotions, she refused to be chained by the betrayal and hurt more than she needed to be. "Thank you, I always could trust you to be honest with me, for what it's worth I am sorry that I hid the truth from you." Marinette nodded at Alya and her grip on the doorframe tightened a little.

There wasn't a lot to say between them. "I want to trust you again, Alya, you inspired me to be better and to stand up for what was right and in a weird way you tried to protect me and Nino. Please do better so I can have my best friend back." Marinette's eyes watered and Alya's tears slid down her cheeks as she nodded, the designer opened her arms and the hug was everything she expected when Alya nearly tackled her, but it was what they both needed.

After their impromptu cry session, monitored by Nora to watch for butterflies, the two students said their farewells. Sliding under her Papa's arm as she exited the building, he'd insisted on coming with her to visit her former classmates, Marinette wiped her eyes with the offered handkerchief. "Feel a little better, dumpling?" He had been skeptical of this whole thing but supported her choice to do it.

"Yea, Papa, I do. I really do."

"Good, I'm glad. Now, I know you like to make all your clothes and for good reason, I've got a secret assignment of my own. You see, your Maman and I agreed I would know just what sort of dress you need to take Adrien's breath away for your date tonight. So, dumpling, we're going shopping." Marinette wanted to be upset but it had been a long time since her parents ever got to buy her clothes, a really long time actually, so she didn't argue as he caught a bus to the shopping district for them.

But she had to admit she didn't expect some of the choices he handed her to try on. Marinette might have accused him of asking Gabriel for help if not for the fact that all of the choices were all colors her father knew she liked and not things that were considered complimentary to her skin tone. After trying on what felt like hundreds of dresses, even if it was only twenty according to Tikki, Marinette and her Papa found one they both liked.

Pale rose in color with a fit and flare shape, the bodice was solid color with very short sleeves made of the same georgette lace that covered the knee-length skirt, she felt really cute in it and it wasn't too short or revealing. Marinette had white, round-toe, heels that she could wear with it and wanted to wear her hair down with loose curls. Her Maman, on their return home, admitted that out of the two of her parents it was her Papa that had an artist's eye and had often picked all of the dresses that Sabine herself wore on their dates.

Marinette hadn't known, though she decided it wasn't that surprising given her Papa's decorative skill, but she was glad that her Papa was happy for her relationship. "You have two hours to get ready before Adrien gets here, dumpling." That made her rush up the stairs and hurry to get ready since this was their first unsupervised date.

'That boy needs his Dad. Not his Father, Gabriel, or his boss. Adrien needs you in his life and if you don't shape up then I will report every last shred of truth on how you break labor laws and pull him from school illegally for photoshoots.'

Leonard's threat had hung heavy between the two men since the initial stirrings against Lila, the black eye Gabriel had sported for two weeks had been hidden with make-up but the bodyguard hadn't feared repercussions or assault charges, as a parent Gabriel respected Leonard and as a friend he respected him even more for doing what he'd done. Watching his son smooth down the jacket of his suit, planning to take his girlfriend to a restaurant known for their private settings so they could avoid the spotlight for some time, Gabriel was proud of Adrien and knew now that he had missed quite a bit.

Leonard met his gaze as the teenager rambled about his nerves, Nathalie busy reassuring him that Marinette would be thrilled to bits, the very slightest of nods from the man expelled most of the tension. Gabriel handed Adrien something he'd kept for his son, for quite some time, a delicate silver chain with loops for charms waiting. "You are under no pressure to accept this, or do what I had done, but I know you're nervous and hope that maybe this will help you with your own ideas for Marinette." Adrien's eyes were just as curious and warm as Emilie's were, it was both heartbreaking and so very amazing.

"Emilie had a book that she bought, I gave her a single flower on every date, she would press the flowers to preserve them; this is the start of a charm bracelet, I think perhaps Marinette would like something she can wear as a reminder of your affections." It was a guess but the girl proved to be very affectionate, though not incredibly handsy in public and it was a trait he appreciated, with her own anxious tendencies it would be best to have something tangible she could carry. Adrien grinned and nodded, looking at the time on his watch.

A smile on his face and a tight hug, Gabriel was nearly bowled over with the strength in his son's sudden motion, Adrien thanked him with a teary smile. "I already have plenty of ideas, thank you so much Dad!" Gabriel managed to hold off until Adrien left but the moment he was gone the tears started, it had been so long since he heard that title, Nathalie's hum was soft and Gabriel appreciated her quiet comfort. After a moment or two, managing to calm himself down, the man looked at Nooroo as the Kwami peeked out from behind the hall.

"Nooroo, if I were to give you back your Miraculous would you be able to find the Guardian?" The Butterfly hesitated but nodded, looking miserable to even admit that much. Gabriel removed the brooch and Nathalie only nodded as she took Duusu's brooch too, the two Kwami accepted them back with curious looks. "Nooroo and Duusu, I release you to be free and return to the Guardian. I am truly sorry that I allowed my grief to blind me to what I was losing and led me to abusing you as I had." The Butterfly Kwami offered a wavering smile, gratitude visible on his face as Duusu fluttered about energetically.

The Kwami nuzzled him. "I knew you were a good man, Gabriel, you just lost your way for a little bit. Thank you for setting me free." The two Kwami disappeared through the door and Nathalie followed him to what once was his lair, the butterflies and cocoons had disappeared, leaving just an empty garden and the glass chamber. Emilie had been embalmed in private, following her death, which was the reason she was in the state she was in now. Nathalie left him then to give him time to say goodbye, for the last time, Gabriel had no more tears to give and only apologized for losing his way.

"I will always cherish what we had, Emilie, I will never forget you; but I won't disappoint you any longer, I cannot allow myself to cling to us and continue to put Adrien in danger or push him away." As he placed his hand on the top of the glass, chest heaving with a deep breath, he contacted the burial company that had done the embalming. They hadn't thought much of his basement being a mausoleum of sorts, it was not new to plenty of the upper-class, once he activated the tinting on the coffin it looked just like any other.

Within the hour his wife was buried in her family plot, with the rest of the Graham de Vanily, and Gabriel gave himself the night to grieve. Free of the burden of the brooch, the burden of being chained to the past, and free to pursue a future beside his son once more.

Sabine laughed as Tom and Gabriel battled, with Adrien and Marinette on their date the two had contacted him and agreed to have him over, Leonard and Nathalie were on either side of her nursing hot drinks and their own chuckles. Having the man request to learn how to play Ultimate Mecha Strike had been a shock but he admitted that he wanted to be able to play with Adrien, he didn't know what his son was really fond of doing and needed a gateway of sorts, Sabine hadn't been able to help hugging the poor man and promising to help.

Watching him now, as he grunted with his hair free of styling products for once, she could tell there was something a little different about him this time; he ran another hand through his hair as he got locked into an animation sequence as Tom's mech unleashed a combo. "Take that you old pincushion." In the past she might have been worried but Gabriel never ceased to surprise her.

"Keep talking, you stale cream puff, once I figure this game out I'm going to make you eat those words." Gabriel was competitive, not that she was surprised by that, fashion was a cutthroat industry; but he wasn't to the point that he was a sore loser. In fact he appeared to be having fun and it warmed her to see a man trying to do better, especially after subjecting his son to harassment by that horrid little liar, Sabine glanced at her phone as it chimed.

Marinette and Adrien had both sent a picture, an adorable selfie of the two of them at the theater, they had done dinner and Adrien had gotten tickets for them to see Wicked together since it was currently playing. "The kids just reached the theater." Earning two non-committal sounds from the men, once again not surprised, the woman responded with a 'have fun' before leading Nathalie to the kitchen as Leonard continued to read his comic books.

"I've never seen him this relaxed, your family is quite amazing."

Sabine met the woman's gaze and smiled. "I like to think so too, shall we prepare some light snacks?" Nathalie nodded and Sabine was pretty happy to relay the ongoing news that Nadja learned from the interviews and messages flooding TVi.

“You mean-“

“I think he’s found it more important to prioritize what he has over what he’s lost.”

Chat Noir was quiet as Nooroo sat in his hands, Duusu perched on Ladybug’s shoulder quietly, the two Kwami had appeared in Ladybug’s room and she’d called him the following evening in order to give them time to rest. “I don’t understand why he’d do what he chose to, though I can’t say I wouldn’t do the same since I don’t know how I’d react, but I guess I’m glad he’s decided enough is enough.” Ladybug heard the sigh as she leaned on her partner’s arm, her own face wet with tears, she had taken one look at the tome that the two had brought with her and knew exactly where they came from.

Something she’d have to tell Chat Noir, she trusted him and didn’t want to keep him in the dark, but she knew how hard he’d taken it when she theorized her idol and boyfriend’s father as Hawkmoth the first time around. “I know who he was, these two coming to me only confirmed it, I am going to respect his request for a second chance. For me to have this make sense, Chat, you’ll have to know that I was one of Caline Bustier’s students at Collège François Dupont.” His eyes widened and he held out a hand for a moment, silencing her, then he cupped her chin and made her look at him.

Ladybug didn’t know what he was looking for. “Princess?” The hope in his voice sent a touch of warmth through her, making her throat tighten as she licked her lips.

“Mhm.”

Words escaped her then as she waited for his reaction, his pupils blowing wide and round, her heart thundering as her hands started to shake. She felt vulnerable and exposed, weightless as his silence kept her teetering on the edge of delight or misery, a part of her theorized who he was ever since Chat Blanc and she needed to be right. His mouth curved into a wide smile and his eyes glistened as green formed around him, leaving Adrien in his place, she’d never been happier to be right. “It’s you! It’s always been you! No wonder you’ve been wearing gray and pink a lot, you sneaky little bug mouse.” His weight crashed into her as she dismissed her own transformation and Tikki giggled above her as Plagg rolled his eyes, her mouth meeting Adrien’s in a frantic kiss.

Once they both laughed over how badly they had danced around each other, with promises to tell each other everything, Marinette knew it was time to finish what she’d been saying. “They brought me a book too, Adrien, the book Lila stole from you that got you pulled from school.” Adrien’s arms tightened on her waist and she squeezed his body a little, to remind him she was here with him, but there wasn’t any sort of anger on his face.

A weak acceptance, exhaustion, maybe some hope. “You want to give him a second chance?” Marinette nodded and cupped his cheek.

“I think we can do that, now that we know the truth, Chaton; he deserves that much, he’s been trying hard to be there for you.” He was learning how to play video games, the two were taking cooking lessons, Marinette had seen him at every photoshoot and he promised dinners with her family every other week as well as an appearance at the Parent’s Dinner the school was having for this year’s graduation award presentation.

Adrien’s eyes watered. “Thank you, Bugaboo.” He kissed her again and she giggled.

“I told you to stop calling me Bugaboo, Chaton, I like Princess more.” His eyes twinkled and he nodded as he cradled her close. “I’m glad though because I thought I liked two boys, I’m really happy it’s just one.” His chuckle into her collar made her giggle.

But he had a warm mischief in his gaze when he let her go. “Isn’t Chaton a little telling, I’m sure Aurore will connect the spots quickly.” Marinette poked his nose with a wink.

“I’ll just have to call you mon Chevalier.” He flushed and she transformed with a grin. “But, for now, I have to go to bed; I have school and I recall being promised fancy coffee and a wake-up kiss.” He tried to shout after her but she swung away with a whoop. The real surprise came nearly half-an-hour later, after a shower and changing, when her Maman said she had company.

Adrien had an overnight bag and a grin as he joined her in her room, the door left open per her parent’s request, they snuggled under her comforter and she cuddled Plagg as the cat Kwami snuggled against her neck. “A cat could get used to this, I’m moving in too Sugarcube.” Tikki’s giggle made Adrien hum as he agreed softly, cradling her close to him as Marinette felt her eyelids droop.

“So what now? No Hawkmoth or Mayura, you have all the Miraculous, just patrol and stop petty crime?”

Marinette grinned. “We learn how to be Guardians, not all threats are corrupt holders, I think there might be something bigger on the horizon now that the circle is closed again.” Adrien hummed as he nodded against her head, promising to study hard, sleep drawing them in and peace making it easy to feel at ease.

So, who wants some Chikai Kuji meta?

Chikai is a character who’s done a lot of awful things. He almost got Enta stabbed, he shot his cute underling, and apparently he’s got a chronic case of backstabbing syndrome towards his criminal allies. And given we’re never fully let into his head, any understanding of him is going to be based heavily on personal interpretation. That said, I do feel there’s one thing about Chikai that has only one reasonable explanation - his threat towards Toi in episode 9. In my opinion, the only way it makes any sense is as a bluff, and I figure I’ve spent way too much time thinking about it anyway, I may as well lay out the reasons why I think so and get it off my chest.

Also this is pretty long and includes screencaps (mostly linked, but a few directly in the post), so under a cut it goes.

Let’s start with the explanation Chikai gives for his threat, that Toi is ‘too good’ to survive in the criminal world. It's essentially the same one he used before to explain to Toi why he shot Masa, that he was doing him ‘a favor’ by killing him because he wouldn’t survive for long - but even for that murder it’s extremely weak. Especially since we as the audience were made aware of another potential one with far stronger backing just earlier in the episode: the fact that Masa knew Toi was the one who killed the head of the Yurikamome (named 'Kamome’ in the light novel). 

How he found out is a mystery, but we can infer from Chikai’s frustration with him that Chikai’s tried to keep him quiet about it before and clearly hasn’t succeeded. Toi being the one who killed Kamome was a secret that both brothers have shaped their lives around keeping. If Masa couldn’t be trusted to go along with the cover story, then silencing him was Chikai’s only guarantee that the truth wouldn’t get out after they left. Still an unquestionably terrible thing to do, but Chikai’s generally pretty terrible. More pertinently, we’ve seen a consistent pattern of him being terrible out of pragmatism (selling his dead parents’ belongings for cash, stealing from his own gang to pay off his family’s debt, kicking Enta at an on-coming sword to protect himself) and no previous indications that he has this extreme, twisted sense of mercy. And in a more meta sense, there was no point in showing us that conversation between Masa and Chikai if it didn’t mean anything. It was a deliberate choice.

But if he was just being pragmatic and protecting their secret, why not tell Toi that in the first place? Because Chikai didn’t know Toi overheard that conversation between him and Masa. As far as he knows, Toi thinks Masa was just a nice doofus and has no reason to suspect otherwise. Meanwhile, the truth of Kamome’s murder is a serious weight for both of them, and Chikai is both aware Toi still worries about it and blames himself, and doesn’t want him to. Admitting that the secret got out to someone and that Chikai felt the need to kill that person to resolve it would only make that worse. Or, if you feel less charitable, maybe he just didn’t want to admit he screwed up and let something slip at one point. Or both. But Chikai has spent the last four years trying to keep the burden of Kamome’s murder off his little brother’s shoulders as much as possible, so it does make sense that he’d prefer what he sees as a glib lie to another heavy truth.

That in and of itself severely weakens the believability of his threat towards Toi later on. If he didn’t actually kill Masa just because he didn’t like his odds as a criminal, then it makes even less sense for him to kill Toi over such a vague reason. But for the sake of argument, let’s assume I’m wrong and Chikai really did go full ‘survival of the fittest’ on Masa with no deeper reasons beyond what he stated outright. It still doesn’t make sense that he would abruptly decide to do the same to Toi. Masa, at the very least, was loud and overly honest and wouldn’t listen to any of Chikai’s directions. He was ill-suited to a life of organized crime, and if you squint and tilt your head far enough, you could maybe kind of see why Chikai might think a mercy kill was a good idea.

Toi, on the other hand, hadn’t done a single thing to get in Chikai’s way or jeopardize their escape all night. On the contrary, he was extremely helpful. He brought a bag full of money and his own gun, and even involved himself in the shooting skillfully enough to take out one of the guys trying to kill Chikai and help him get away. There’s nothing about his actions that reveal him as ‘too good of a person’ to work successfully alongside his big brother. In every way, he was useful, loyal, and showed zero hesitation to do whatever Chikai might need him to. Even Chikai himself told Masa just a little earlier that Toi was ‘special’ when it came to criminal skill and capability.

Put bluntly, it isn’t practical to kill Toi at that moment, not when he’s still completely committed to doing anything for Chikai. Certainly not when there’s a third enemy still unaccounted for, who Toi could be useful in helping to take out. Not to mention if what Chikai did really want was to kill him, why be so slow about it while Toi still has a gun of his own, especially when Chikai just fired without warning at his previous victims? And of course, why bother going out of his way to pick Toi up and take the extra risk of waiting all day for him in a city full of cops and revenge-minded gangsters on the lookout for him, if he just planned to drop the hammer on Toi at the first sign of difficulty once they were together? He could’ve saved himself a lot of time, trouble, and an extra bullet by just leaving on his own without saying a word to Toi if he was going to be that quick to discard him over nothing.

And there’s one more point that further clarifies the overall picture - Chikai’s reaction when he sees Toi’s gotten involved in the shootout. If Chikai’s priority was how useful Toi could be to him, then he should have been impressed or relieved or excited to see him taking such action on his behalf. But instead, he’s shocked, even almost panicked, when he realizes Toi’s taken out one of their opponents on his own. It clearly wasn’t part of his plan, or anything he asked or expected of Toi. And in many ways, it’s a mirror of what happened four years ago with Kamome. Once again, Chikai’s seeing his little brother take up a gun - the exact same one, even - and kill someone to protect him. Given Ikuhara’s track record with parallels, that’s almost certainly not a coincidence.

The simplest explanation for his sudden distress is something we were shown through his conversation with Enta just last episode, where he admitted that he’s not really happy or comfortable with the lengths Toi will go to for him. There’s no satisfaction or pride in either his voice or expression when he talks about what Toi gave up for him years ago, only wistfulness and some regret, emphasized by his own choice to hold onto an old photo of his little brother doing what he loved most. The conflict in Chikai’s own feelings is actually laid out here relatively clearly: he wants Toi to come with him so they can stay together, but he’s aware that it isn’t what would really be best for Toi. 

If he were kinder or more selfless, Chikai would’ve cut Toi loose himself once he realized that. But as we’ve established, Chikai kinda sucks. So instead he chose to let his own ‘desire’ win out and asked Toi to join him anyway, accepting the newest sacrifice Toi had to make for the sake of their connection. But that doesn’t mean his own misgivings have vanished either. Just hours later, he’s already offering Toi an out by reminding him he can still go back if he’d rather be with his friends and that it’ll be too late before long.

Given all that build-up and the parallels to the Kamome incident, the shootout seems to be the event that forced Chikai to finally accept that Toi being with him and Toi being safe or keeping his hands clean were mutually exclusive. Whatever Chikai had been telling himself up until that point, there was no more denying just what being together would mean for Toi.  Even the gun Chikai thought he’d taken out of Toi’s hands permanently has resurfaced, and in fact was never actually gone in the first place. All of his assumptions about his own ability to protect his little brother were definitively contradicted, and he’s left to face reality. A life at his side would mean a life of constant danger and more killing, and even if he never asked Toi to go that far for him, Toi would still throw himself into the thick of it for him all on his own, every time.

So, to sum all that rambling up:

It’s far more likely that Chikai murdered Masa over the Yurikamome secret than anything else, making his stated reason for later threatening Toi completely groundless.

Even if he did kill Masa because he wasn’t suited to a life of crime, Toi is extremely skilled and loyal to him, which Chikai himself acknowledged earlier.

Chikai’s already expressed conflicted feelings about both taking Toi with him and Toi’s willingness to do anything for him.

Chikai becomes visibly panicked, not over the shootout itself, but specifically when he sees Toi’s gotten involved in it.

Which brings us to the end result: Chikai’s finally decided to ‘throw away’ their connection once and for all, just as Toi’s decided to confront him by stating in no uncertain terms that he’s ready and willing to do anything to maintain it. Chikai thinks he knows how loyal Toi is, but he also just heard Toi admit he’s afraid Chikai will treat him as expendable the way he does everyone else. Given everything that’s come before, it seems clear to me that he chose to do something very stupid, but not entirely without logic. Confirm Toi’s fears with a threat, one that specifically refutes their connection as ‘brothers’ which means so much to Toi, in the interest of scaring him off and severing things between them permanently. After all, in his own words, if things aren’t working out, just throw it all away.

It was doomed to fail, of course. Because it was a terrible idea that deeply underestimates Toi’s devotion, as Chikai always seems to do. But as a plan and as part of Chikai’s overall character, the whole thing being an extremely stupid, misguided bluff is really the only explanation that fits. Not to say this exonerates him of his many, many other wrong-doings (of which I’d include even making this threat at all), nor is this meant to convince anyone to like him. But to assume Chikai was being serious and really did plan to murder his own brother on a whim contradicts basically everything we do know about his feelings for Toi and most of his actions up to this point, which I believe does the writing as a whole a massive disservice. It was a deeply unhealthy relationship that needed to end, and to say Chikai did a lot of things wrong in how he handled it is like saying the ocean is kind of damp. But as the last few minutes of the episode confirmed, nothing really mattered to him more than Toi. There was no way he was ever going to pull that trigger.

Eddie Brock, a spiders uncle.

What if Mary Brock, Eddie’s older sister, and Mary Parker, Peter’s mother, were the same person in the MCU?

What if Eddie Brock was actually Peter Parker’s uncle??

My first fic pretty much sums up Eddies relationship with his family in the comics, so while Eddie might have known of Peter, he likely hadn’t actually met him due to his strained relationship with his sister.

Mary and her husband had died suddenly in a plane crash, which only made Eddies fear of heights grow worse. They had apparently been flying for business reasons, though they never talked much about their work.

Eddies father didn’t acknowledged him once during the funeral, and not knowing anyone one there, Eddie found himself staying towards the back. All he could think of through out there service was how his last real conversation he had with his sister had been another argument.

He might have seen lil Peter at the funeral, but might not have gotten too close. His uncle Ben and aunt May seemed like good loving people, and young 20 year old Eddie was too much of a mess to be any good to the kid.

So Eddie kept his distance, finished college and got a job at the Daily Bugle. Every so often he’d think back on his nephew, hope he was doing well, but never really tried to reach out. He was only a kid after all, and he already had a great uncle in his life, he didn’t need Eddie.

So Eddie continued on, chasing stories and trying to expose corruption when he finds it. Tony Stark had been at the top of his hit list for a long while until the mans figurative and literal change of heart. Suddenly Ironman stories flooded the news room, then a few years after that aliens were attacking New York and even more superheros were running around. Including the return of Captain America apparently.

And while everyone else was distracted chasing Norse gods and super soldiers, Eddie Brock noticed that hard labor workers were being wrongfully put out of business by Stark and government co-owned Department of Damage Control. And that was just the start. Because where there is a disaster like The Battle of New York, there are always those who would try to profit off of the suffering of others.

Eventually Eddie got himself noticed by the wrong people. Whether it had been the criminal underbelly run by Fisk, or the corrupt side of SHIELD, the end result was Eddie losing his job and all his credibility in New York.

So Eddie moves to San Francisco with Anne.

Five years later he finds himself sharing his body with an alien who might be a bit in love with him.

It was only a few days after the blast that Eddie had discovered Venom had survived, but was much smaller and weaker after sacrificing so much of themselves to save Eddie.

Eddie was beyond relieved that his other was alive, as he hadn’t quite felt whole after he thought he lost them. He promised Venom that he’d protect them as they got their strength back. A promise he would find a little harder to keep when he saw the familiar trucks of the Department of Damage Control outside the Life Foundation on the news.

It looked like Stark and the government were already digging into what had happened and what Drake has been up to.

Eddies story on the deadly human experimentations involving the same extraterrestrial findings that brought down that shuttle six months ago had already been made public. Though what those findings were Eddie had kept rather vague for Venom's protection. Now it looks like Stark and the feds are trying figure it out.

Eddie thankfully has the cover of having been very publicly ill the day after the break in. So he had the plausible deniability of not remembering anything that happened that night if they do manage to link the incident to him.

They don’t seem to, thankfully, hands apparently full with the clean up and the law suits and whatever else they might be uncovering.

Months go by and Eddie isn’t surprised when he hears that Stark Industries bought out what was left of the Life Foundation, though he was surprised when he’s requested to be the one to interview the CEO Ms. Potts as a PR move once the buy up goes public. He’s even offer an all expense payed first class ticket to New York for the interview, as she unfortunately can’t make it out to the west coast due to her busy schedule.

Eddie is very hesitant to take up the offer, part of him worried this might be a trap. He reminds his boss that he didn’t want his show back and would rather go back to writing. His boss understands but also points out how good this could be for him, just this once. Venom then tells him on how much they would like to see New York and the reporter caves.

First class or not, the 6 hour flight is still tense for Eddie, but his symbiote senses this and tries their best to distract him from his fear. They ask him about New York, what were the best places to eat, or if he still knew anyone there.

Eddie answers there questions, but pauses on the last one. Because instead of thinking of his old co-workers and the long distant friends he once knew, the thought of the Parker’s and tiny toddler Peter popped into his mind. He blamed the plane for reminding him of his sisters funeral and tried to push the thought away but Venom already saw it. And now they were curious.

They asked more question; Who were those people? Why did they make Eddie feel sad? Were they going to visit them while in New York?

Eddie tried to explain how it was complicated, that he barely knew them even if they were family, how he’s not even seen them in over 13 years.

He can still feel Venom's curiosity, and it was causing his own to grow. So Eddie pulls up the internet browser on his phone and looks them up. It wouldn’t hurt just to see how they’re doing right? To make sure they’re alright and give himself that peace of mind. To assure himself that they don’t need him to come in and fuck up their happy lil family.

Venom growls at that train of thought but Eddie ignores them as the browser slowly loads. Damn planes.

The first result is Ben Parker’s obituary.

... oh.

Venom goes quiet within him as he reads how Ben had been murdered by a burglar almost a year ago. With a little more digging he found an article that told how killer had been caught and delivered to police wrapped in webbing.

Spider-man, Eddie recalls. One of the more publicly visible hero’s running around New York now.

Eddie frowns as he swipes back to the picture of Ben. There’s another one beneath it, this one showing him together with May and a teenager who must be Peter. Eddie can’t help but notice the kid looks so much like Mary.

‘...We should visit them.’ Venom suggests again, but softer this time.

Eddie can’t find it in himself to say no.

12 + reedsue!

It begins innocuously enough, Sue thinks—an entirely normal morning. It’s even, perhaps, unusually normal for a group of world-famous explorers and superheroes. Their mornings, more often than not, include battles, time-travel, sentient kitchen appliances hellbent on conquering the world (that one was very definitely Reed’s fault, and he had been permanently banned from designing anything kitchen-related after what they had all not-so-fondly come to refer as The Dishwasher Incident).

Sue and Reed are at the kitchen table, idly eating their breakfast. Well. Sue is, perhaps, not precisely idle. She’s juggling eating her own breakfast in time to head down to the office and feeding little one-year-old Franklin. 

Sue stifles a sigh. She doesn’t know why she bothers putting on her work clothes before she feeds Franklin. There’s already a splatter of baby food high on the left shoulder of her two-thousand dollar designer suit, and she knows she’s going to have to change now. She’s probably going to be late, and she has an important board meeting first thing.

This is why she prefers the mornings when it’s Reed’s turn to feed Franklin -- they switch, so they get every other morning free, but today just happens to be Sue’s turn and not Reed’s. She casts a somewhat resentful glance over at him now. 

He gets to calmly enjoy reading the newspaper while he sips his coffee and eats his toast, all without having to wrestle with a temperamental and extremely picky one-year-old who has decided that he loathes half of the breakfast Sue spent twenty minutes preparing for him.

But, of course, this is all par for the course—the sort of morning Sue feels they don’t get enough of, what with all of the superheroing they get sucked into constantly. She supposes she should enjoy it while she can.

This isn’t, of course, to say that there were no warning signs of the kind of morning it was going to turn into—Sue had noticed that Johnny had seemed unusually restless lately and she was suitably concerned, although she’d seen him go through this often enough to know that his latest conquest—Kiki the Singer, or was it Alfonso the Gymnast? Sue finds it so hard to keep track—had likely broken up with him, and that really all he needed was time to find someone new. Which she was sure wouldn’t take long. 

Sue doesn’t know why Johnny seems incapable of maintaining a relationship for more than five minutes, but whenever he’s between dates, it’s everyone else who suffers.

This time is no different.

Ben disrupts the relative tranquility of Reed and Sue’s breakfast when he bursts angrily into the kitchen, one hand clutching at a sopping wet towel that’s wrapped haphazardly around his waist, and bellows, “Where the hell is he?!”

Cut for length.

Sue doesn’t know exactly who he’s talking about, but she suspects, given the green slime that Ben is covered in, that he’s referring to Johnny. “Ben!” she snaps, spoon full of baby food hovering in mid-air. Franklin, delightfully chubby and rosy-cheeked, is sitting in his high-chair and singing his favorite song at full volume, although it’s more a series of babbled syllables than actual words. “No cussing in front of Franklin. We’ve talked about this.”

“You lissen here, Susie,” Ben hollers, shaking a finger at her, “you tell me where that juvenile delinquent you call a brother is, and you tell me right now! You know what that little menace did? He rigged the damn shower so it—it covered me with this damn goo!”

Sue tries very hard not to roll her eyes, but she’s not too successful. Reed raises his newspaper up to cover his face, but Sue is sure that it’s just to hide that he’s snickering behind it. 

She can’t entirely blame him. Ben is quite the sight. She should probably find this amusing, but it’s just that Ben and Johnny have been getting into these fights for years. Almost as long as she and Johnny have known Ben. 

Certainly, this all began when Johnny really was the snot-nosed kid Ben still thinks he is. Eleven. Johnny’d been eleven, and Ben had been the glamorous, star linebacker of State U, and Sue’s fairly sure that Johnny’d just wanted Ben’s attention because he thought Ben was cool. Hence the pranks that had mostly ended with Ben chasing a giggling Johnny around her aunt’s boardinghouse and tickling him until he was howling with laughter as punishment.

“I absolutely will not tell you where he is,” Sue says with as much dignity as she can muster. “I am not paying to have the Baxter Building rebuilt again just because you two don’t know how to control your tempers.”

“He’s in his garage,” Reed says mildly, still hiding behind his morning paper. “I believe he’s working on that new car he bought last week. You know, the one he’s been working on so obsessively.”

“New car?” Ben says, and Sue does not like the way his eyes light up at that. “We’ll see about that. Thanks, Stretch. You’re a real friend.” 

He casts a furious glare at Sue, and its meaning is clear. She is not a real friend.

Sue scowls back at him, which sends him thundering off toward the elevator.

She rounds on Reed. “Reed Richards,” she says disapprovingly. “Why on earth would you tell him where Johnny is?”

Reed doesn’t say anything at first, pretending that he’s too engrossed in his reading, so she turns his newspaper invisible. 

Reed sighs and lowers the paper. “One of these days I’ll figure out how you do that, and then where will you be?”

“The same place I am now,” Sue says. “Now spill.”

“Darling, I’d rather he know precisely where Johnny is than have him tear up the entire building searching for him. Or, god forbid, the city.” He takes a sip of his coffee. “I was saving us money. And bad publicity.”

Sue’s eyes narrow. He’s lying. She doesn’t know what he’s lying about, or why, but she knows him well enough to know that he’s lying. 

She’s about to call him on it, but she’s interrupted by a loud series of worrying bangs, crashes, and yells that rise up through the floor. 

Sue glares pointedly at Reed. “Since it’s your fault that Ben found him, you get to go break it up.”

“But—“ Reed starts to complain.

“No,” Sue says, raising her baby spoon in the air. “No arguing. Your mess, you clean it up.”

Reed sighs, rises wearily to his feet, and does as he’s told.

There’s still something about this whole thing that feels off, Sue thinks, as she goes back to feeding Franklin.

How did Johnny manage to get the Baxter Building’s pipes to spew that goo, for one thing? He’s never seemed particularly interested in plumbing.

Why was Reed lying? Reed rarely ever lies to her. Partners. That’s what they promised each other when they got married. That they’d be equal partners in everything. And yet he’s lying to her now?

It’s just strange, Sue thinks. It’s just strange.

Ben destroys Johnny’s brand-new car. And about half of the garage he was keeping it in. And three of Johnny’s other cars.

Sue thinks it explains why Johnny had screeched the way he did. He’d been talking excitedly about that car for a month before he bought it. It was expensive, to say the least. One of a kind. Designed especially for Johnny.

Sue sighs as she sits at her desk and looks at the expense reports, detailing how much it’s going to cost to repair everything Ben and Johnny broke, and how much they’ll have to pay the plumbers they’ll have to call in to fix Ben’s shower.

She presses her head to her desk and tries not to scream. Sometimes she feels like a preschool teacher when she’s around Ben and Johnny.

No, that’s not quite right. When Johnny was in preschool, he was a perfect angel. Those adorable little curls, the pink, pudgy cheeks, the big blue eyes. God, he was cute when he was that age.

Ben and Johnny are acting more like unruly teenagers. She can understand Johnny behaving that way -- he’s actually still a teenager, even if he’s only two months shy of twenty.

But Ben? Ben is nearly thirty, and Ben should be above lowering himself to Johnny’s level. 

Well. Johnny pranked Ben, Ben got back at him, and that’s it. They’re even. At least this is all over.

It’s not over. Not over at all. Over the course of the next two weeks, Ben and Johnny engage in an escalating and increasingly elaborate prank war.

They manage to drag in people Sue never would have expected to stoop to that level. Ben drags in half the Avengers (Sue suspects it’s because they’re his poker buddies, and mostly owe him large sums of money), Johnny gets the Inhumans on his side.

To be entirely honest, Sue’s not sure whether to be angry or impressed at the organizational capacity and leadership abilities this whole thing evinces.

She really didn’t think Ben or Johnny had that degree of meticulous planning and foresight in them.

And the technology they’ve used—they’ve clearly been raiding Reed’s lab. How else would Johnny have gotten hold of a time machine, which he put to very nefarious and ill-advised uses?

Sue’s not sure that the disco era will ever recover from Johnny’s meddling. It had taken her and Reed three days to mop up their mess and put history back the way it should be. Mostly, anyways.

There’s also the fact that if Sue didn’t know any better, she’d say Reed was enjoying all of this.

She’d say Reed was enjoying all of this just a tad too much. 

It doesn’t take her too long to discover the truth of it. A few well-placed but cagey questions to Ben and Johnny, and it’s obvious.

She finds Reed in his lab, back bent over his latest invention. He looks so sweet and innocent, but... “Darling,” Sue says, “I think we need to talk.”

“About what, my love?” Reed asks, eyes wide. 

“I know,” Sue says flatly. She’s giving Reed one last chance to confess.

He raises an eyebrow. “Know what, darling?”

Sue sighs. Well. There goes that. "I know that you’re the mastermind behind Ben and Johnny’s little prank war. They haven’t figured it out, you know, but I did.”

“Ah,” Reed says, disappointed. He leans back in his chair and sighs. “I’m frankly surprised it took you this long. I suppose my fun is over, then?”

Sue crosses her arms. “Yes. Or I’ll tell Ben and Johnny what you’ve been up to, and you know they’ll want revenge.”

“All right,” Reed says, “fair enough.” He grins up at her. “It was fun, though.”

“They really had no idea you were behind everything,” Sue says, and she can’t help it if she sounds admiring. “You’re good. Better than I thought. Almost makes me wonder who’d win in a prank war between me and you.”

Reed laughs. “Oh, no. That foolish I am not. You would win, without question. You’re much better at being devious than I am, and I mean that in the most flattering way possible.”

Sue finds herself smiling down at him without being able to help it. “I’m glad you know that.” 

It’s true. She is. She could beat Ben, Johnny, and Reed in a prank war without even trying. There’s a reason none of them have ever dared to try to play a prank on her, and it’s the fact that they are all much too afraid of her and what she is capable of.

Which is just the way Sue likes it.

Sorry, if I may, I had perhaps a thought/question/suggestion for daredevil? I haven’t seen the third season yet, but so far I perceive him to be someone deeply self-destructive but utterly unaware of that fact. If this rings true at all, I imagine that the realization would hit him hard, particularly since he’s Catholic. If this were ever something you’d be interested in writing, I’d be interested in reading it, but please don’t feel obligated. I hope that things are going well for you!

No need to apologize for talking to me.  As long as you’re not spewing hate, the askbox is open, and you’re not directly contradicting something I recently stated as a preference, I’m not going to explode at you.  

I’m in the process of watching season 3 now.  I’m really loving it.  The whole thing with messing with Matt’s public image to getto him, I relate so hard.

This is an awesome prompt; thank you so much for sending it. I know you probably wanted something set in the present, but the way this started coming to me really had to be set at Columbia.  I imagine Matthaving a lifelong struggle with self-harm, and Daredevil-ing is like a copingmechanism.  I wanted to explore it before he went that route.

That said, this story contains self harm, but it’s vague. It treats the essence of the issue, not the details.

The chicken or the egg.  

It’s not a bad metaphor.  It does a decent job of summing up the thought circles that are impossible to understand, but insist on baffling Matt anyway.  Normally he’s perceptive enough to suss out the nexus of his issues, and if they’re worthy enough, address them at the source.

Not today, though.  His head’s cloudy and throbbing. He doesn’t think it hurt so much when he first lay down on his narrow dorm bed, but time has given up on being linear.  Matt’s no longer sure if it was the depression or the malaise that hit first.  The chicken or the egg.

Matt’s thoughts aren’t linear either.  Foggy insists on vegetarian fried rice when they go out for Chinese.  “Because it’s weird, Matt.  You can’t have the grown-up and the baby in the same dish,” he’d explained.  “Isn’t there something about that in the Bible?”

Goats, Matt had told him.  It’s about goats.  But Christ declared all foods clean, and that’s why his followers don’t keepkosher.  But Foggy grew up in a deli, so of course he’d see it from the other side.  Funny how the realization only hits him now, when the thought of food makes his mouth water in a way that’s distinctly unpleasant.  And lack of sustenance probably has something to do with the nauseous ache crashing around the inside of his head.

Matt lets out a dejected sigh and shifts onto his stomach, burying his face in his pillow.  He knows his glasses sit safely on his desk, but he still feels the shadowy indents of the nose pads.  It’s like rubbing his face in powdered glass.  He wishes twin extra-long sheets came in a higher thread count.

Matt’s eyes start to water.  Tears of pain pool beneath his eyelids and run out of the corners.  The pillowcase soaks up the droplets and spreads them, creating wet spots that press against his brows and cling to his cheeks.

The dampness is cold, but Matt’s wires are crossed, and it may as well be burning.  He smells the salt, the stress in his sweat, the sulfates in the laundry soap.  His brain throws in the memory of burned rubber and sunbaked asphalt, and before he can stop himself, he’s on his back, kicking off the covers and floundering.  

He can’t take this pain.  He can’t find his dad.  He can’t see.

But it’s coming through all wrong.  He went blind first. Then Jack died.  Right?  And the migraines came later, at the orphanage.  Along with the nightmares.

And that’s what this is, isn’t it?  Scratchy bedding, a roommate who only pretends to like him.  But Sister Maggie likes him. She comes when he calls out to her.  And when he calls out to his dad.  And even when his brain goes primal and fuzzy and he yells for the mother he’s never even known.

Matt‘s throat is working, his vocal cords pulsing like plucked guitar strings.  But he can’t hear the notes.  He’s too disconnected, his mouth and ears too far apart.  Matt rolls onto his side, dragging his knees to his chest and clamping his arms around them, squeezing himself into aball.  He wraps his palm around the opposite wrist for good measure,sliding the chain on a door that’s already bolted.

But someone’s rattling the knob.  Matt hears metal on metal, the scrape of a key.  There’s a creak, then a slam, then, “Whoops.”

A couple shuffling footsteps.  “Oh, hey, Matt.”

Matt flinches at the sudden influx of sound.  He couldn’t hear himself groaning a moment ago, but Foggy may as well be speaking through a bullhorn.  The jump in logic makes Matt’s temples throb sickeningly. But if Foggy’s here, then Matt’s definitely now.  Pinpointing the x,y, and z of location on coordinate plane grounds him in the fourth dimension too, even though his math classes haven’t taught him how to do that yet.

A bitter taste pools under his tongue.  Matt swallows to slow his racing heartbeat.  He takes a breath.

It’s 2009.

He gets a whiff of candy corn coming off Foggy.  It’s October.

The streetlamp hums outside the window.  Matt can smell beer, too.  And Vaseline.  A hint of latex.  It’s the middle of the night.  He’s definitely in college.

“You ok, buddy?”  Foggy flips on the overhead light. The fluorescent bulbs sizzle to life, and Matt’s stomach flips, bubbling like a cauldron of vomitous witch’s brew.

“Fine,” Matt croaks.  He lifts his head an inch from his still-wet pillow and loosens his tightly wound posture.  His hackles are still up, but Foggy’s buzzed and blissful.  He doesn’t need to worry.

“You sure?  You were in bed when I left,” Foggy says. “And that was, like… early.”

“Hm.”  Matt’s hand is wet, too.  He wipes it on hissheets.

“Party’s still going on, if you wanna drop in.  I’ll go with you.  It’s…”  Foggy laughs.  “It’s a good party.”

“Nah.”  Matt’s senses are going off again.  He smells metal.  But that could just be the nausea crystalizing in his sinuses.

“You really should.  If you’re just sad, you should get up. Do something.”  Foggy’s uneven footsteps approach Matt’s bed. “Come on.”

“Not sad.” Matt means to add some more detail, like the building migraine, the rising urge to throw up.  He means to add the just, theway Foggy did.  He doesn’t mean to lie.

“Yeah, right.”  Foggy grabs Matt’s wrist.

“No, Fog—”  Matt isn’t expecting to be pulled out of bed. And he isn’t expecting searing pain to lance up his arm.

“You’re not— Jesus, Matt!”  The exclamation comes across suddenly as Foggy’s fingers find the half-moon scratches on Matt’s forearm. Surprise ups the spit and anxious vibration in his tone.

For a second, Matt’s lost again.  But then the blocks stack up.  The memories, the hurt, the cycles of illness he has trouble labeling as physical or mental.  It’s happened before.  It makes a sick sort of sense, made sicker by the fact that Matt knows he deserves it.

“You’re not Jesus.”  It’s clear it’s not what Foggy meant to say, but his friend runs with it anyway.

Matt makes a cynical noise.  His mouth is too dry and wooly for him to force out more than one syllable.  If Foggy’s contradicting something, it didn’t come from Matt’s lips.  Even if his head hurts enough to make that kind of gibberish a real possibility.

“You don’t have to suffer.  And, god, I can’t believe you did this to yourself.”  Foggy doesn’t want to touch the wounds anymore. He’s sticky with Matt’s blood.  Matt can hear him bouncing the pad of his index finger against his thumb, repeatedly breaking the seal as the viscous fluid starts to dry.

Matt’s going to tell him he didn’t mean to, but Foggy makes to walk away.   Matt decides it’s not worth opening his mouth.  He turns inward again and tries to talk himself through relaxing the tension in hisneck.  

He doesn’t expect Foggy to swoop back in and pull him out of bed by the shoulders.  “No, no, Fog,” Matt protests, attempting to push him away while also being conscious of the facts that blood is running freely down his arm, and he’s perilously close to vomiting.  “I—my head—”

“Cut it out, Matt.  You’re depressed.  You’re bleeding!”

It’s the middle of the night.  Foggy can’t be dragging him to the campus health clinic.  Matt’s clearly in no shape for a party. He gets a mental image of himself sitting on the bathroom counter, slumped against the mirror, explaining in broken sentences how this is not an intentional act of self-flagellation while Foggy applies Neosporin and Band-Aids.

But they’re not going to make it that far.  They’re not going to make it out of the room.  Matt gags and claps his hand over his mouth.

“Shit.”  This time, Foggy interprets correctly.  He shoves Matt into his desk chair and thrusts the trash can into his lap.

Matt coughs harshly.  He heaves up a dribble of bile, then waits for the room to stop spinning.  He’s definitely dehydrated. Some simple carbs would probably do him good too, but Matt’s not ready to brave anything that will require chewing.  Or anything with a flavor.

“Sorry.”  Matt scrapes his tongue with his teeth and wills them to stop chattering.

“You didn’t have a headache when I left,” Foggy says, a little defensively.

It’s probably true.  Matt doesn’t remember the details well enough to refute it.  “I do now,” he murmurs.

Foggy sighs.  “Yeah.  You do now.”  The mini-fridge opens and closes.  He cranks the top off a bottle of water and nudges it against Matt’s hand.  “Here.  Rinse.  I’ll get you back to bed.  And put something on those scratches, if you want.”

He thinks about it as he swishes the water and spits it into the trash.  The wounds themselves don’t hurt.  But the drying blood itches.

“Or I could go, if you’d rather…” Foggy waffles.

Matt’s taking too long.  Foggy doesn’t want to leave him alone, but he’s going to come out and say it.

Matt hates that he does this to himself.  He hates even more that he’s ruining his friend’s night.  But, truth be told, he doesn’twant to be alone either.

“Sure,” Matt finally says. “You can stay.”  It’s too demanding.  He quickly revises. “I mean…you should.  I want you to stay.”

Inspired by Under The Banyan Tree of R.K. Narayan’s short fiction A Career

Once I was a cook in a Chinese restaurant in Sta. Cruz Manila, until the end of the red regime in 1986. My everyday life was immersed in my deep relationship with vegetables, meat of all sorts, fish, and spices. I have dedicated my time cooking savory dishes that would make our customers satisfied. This ordinary routine came to an end when the news about political chaos was announced over radios and tv, triggering a civil conflict and turning the moments of the day into a vacuum of silence. I admit I have no interest in political matters, but my way of gathering information is peculiar and I think it's canny. I would like to believe that hearsay is of a different value. I would tell this seriously with the other chefs in the kitchen then leave them pondering with a grin.

A week passed, when I came home from work, I told my wife about my resignation and my decision to venture to another source of living. My wife did not express any refute to my decision nor she pressed any responses of the effect of that in the family. “Life will go on, I have saved a little money for us to survive,” I said firmly. 

A year after my imminent early retirement, and on a favorable fortune, I was able to establish a humble car repair shop along with the boulevard extension in Pasay, hung up on a large board with the inscription The One Stop Repair Shop. - The roadside became a parking lot for my clientele. As the days passed and work kept me busy, the jeepney drivers became my friends, and my suppliers of equipment welcomed me warmly. This business friendship eventually made my machine tools get plenty of different sorts as repair issues came in variety from simple tire repairs, welding loose shocks, and suspension, and building sidecars for motorcycles converted into a trike. 

One day a young fellow presented himself at my shop. He looked about twenty, fair and bright. He wore faded blue jeans, a white shirt, and a green scarf on his neck. “What can I do for you?” I asked, taking him as a young customer that might ask for a service repair. If I am not much into details I wouldn’t notice the purple prayer beads when he brought his palm together as if in prayer and said, “Please help me, sir. I will do any work you may give me for any kindness you may render in return.” There is something of a magnet in his persona that made me quickly decide. I thought anyway that it is opportune to hire an assistant in the shop. “I am a law-abiding citizen, sir, and susceptible to moral influences,” I spoke to him for about an hour. He said that he belonged to a family of wealthy landowners in Sorsogon, his mother died of multiple organ failure because of diabetes, his father took a mistress and he was ill-treated by his relatives and consequently ran away from home. A poignant story indeed, initially I felt. I directed him to my house which was only two blocks away from the main road and gave him a note of instruction for my wife to be handed, and when I went home in the evening I found that he had already made himself a great favorite there. His life story has deeply moved my wife and the children. “So young!” She whispered to me, “Without a father or a mother, it will be so difficult to deal with life this early!” She sighed. He had made himself lovable already. 

The other skill of Emil was his brilliance in history and literature. It was never a fail to him to remember all, he would tell stories to my children at night of epic heroes of mythology to urban legends of aswang, tikbalang, tiyanak, and folk tales of other regions; Amazingly, if someone would ask 'where these stories he learned from' he would answer, “I have read a wide array of books from public libraries, I have some books collected but unfortunately destroyed by a typhoon that devastated the provinces of the south.” The children had already developed a male-nanny relationship at an instant, “Let Emil stay in our house, he is great, he can attend to children, and tell them more stories and help them do their school works.” My wife looked at me with a smile of approval. 

Emil offered himself to help in the kitchen and it was a random attempt. “Why won't you allow me to help in the kitchen? Is it because you think I can't cook? Give me a chance and see.” He said with audacity. I protested at first as I doubted his capability for the task. He dashed into the kitchen and prepared delicious food for us. We were all very pleased. After that I allowed him to freely work on the stove, and as well it did not require much time to train him on the simple chores in the shop. In a matter of a week, he already learned how to dismount truck tires, and the iron treatment of the rubber interior was superbly clean and customer service was at par to gain my client's trust. After a month my confidence had turned, no doubt entrusting the management of every service request. He had many attractive ways about him, our clients liked to talk to him, he helped everyone to the best of his capacity.

The result of Emil's presence in the shop was a real convenience, and the sales increased nearly tenfold. I had plenty of rest now. “Beautiful!” I told myself. I left the shop entirely in his care, there are many instances where my wife and I talked about giving him deserved compensation for the undoubted effort, we felt we ought not to exploit his kindness but when the subject was pressed his eyes turned glassy and said, “If you don't want me to stay anymore just tell me straight and I'll leave.”

Five years and a half passed. He lived with us through all our joys and sorrows, the business had prospered enormously. We were living in a bigger house in the same place. I had immense work orders from clients of all sorts of machines and automobile repairs. This business gave me large profits. It kept me running to look for other suppliers who would be able to provide large quantities of auto parts and other metal supplies. The shop was entirely in Emil’s hand. - At a near-distant district in Manila, I used to stop in a shop supplies store in Recto, bidding a price canvass for the next month supplies of the shop in which have kept me busy the whole day till the late afternoon. When I went home at eight o’clock, Emil was at the doorstep of the house all prepped with a bulging knapsack on his shoulders red-eyed and sobbing, Emil said, “My father, father, stroke. Never thought he would get it!” I consoled him. I had never seen him so broken, “He will survive, don’t worry,” I said shakily. And maybe because of the surprising news, I had hardly to ask about the shop – “I have handed the keys and the cash payments to Mother.” – “All right, all right,” I will look at all that, “don’t worry anymore,” I said. Immediately, I arranged a means of transport for him and instructed the taxi driver to take him safely to Pantranco bus station. The car jolted forward and he put his head out of the window and said, “I will be back in two weeks if my father gets well, whatever happens, I won’t be away for more than fifteen days. “Topeng has asked me to bring him,” – His voice receded while getting far from where I stood praying in my mind for him a farewell – “A wooden toy car, please tell him that I will surely bring it, my regards to mother,” tears welled up and rolled down his cheeks. He put out his arm and waved goodbye to indicate “I will surely be back soon!” 

Having some unfinished Recto business on hand, I could hardly go near the shop for a week. When I reopened, the first thing I noticed was some of the new machine tools I bought for quite a price were missing. I read the account books and examined them. The entries made were all in a mess. I put them away. Having my regular clients informed that the shop has reopened is more imperative. I went out to see the signage and turned on the lights.

The usurer Digoy lived a few blocks from the shop. Called me up that afternoon and said that he needed to reassess something on my account of borrowed money. I am so much sure of the balance that I left unpaid and today is not yet due to make a payment. “I’ll be there, yes I will,” I put back the phone on the hook. The conversation made me think – not so sure but it made me confident to see him. I owed an enormous debt of gratitude to this person for the unlimited credit he allowed me at the start of the life of my business. - After some introductory and inconsequential talk, I put before him the matter of his call. He gave me a grin, He said “What on earth are you being forgetful my friend?” He opened a book that is in disordered pages of a ledger and showed me the line of the outstanding balance that is under my name. The figures showed: Sixty-three thousand nine hundred fifty-three and zero cents. I stooped forward and read it with my lips and frowned “What?” I almost fell out of poise when I tried to resume my posture. “I only owed you the total balance of twenty-three thousand, and made a payment sixteen thousand before its due last week which made my belief of seven thousand as the total balance up to date,” I explained. “Don’t get me wrong my friend, you are a businessman and so am I.” He recited this with full authority, “No use talking indirectly and vaguely, I will tell you what the matter is, your account stands as the figures shown in the record, and if you have paid at least the sum of the amount you mentioned, I should have considered your last statement of seven thousand,” this is the first time in my life I heard him talk to me like that. “But, last week I sent the sum of sixteen thousand to partially pay off the debt – There must be a balance of,” he took his ledger again and showed me no payment was made and there were additional cash loans that added up and made the sum of the outstanding balance to be claimed. “The young fellow said that business was brisk and you would clear the account at once the date that was promised which was supposed to be yesterday – And as I didn't hear any word from you I called up.” I felt my head was shot. “I will see you again,” and went back to my shop. I examined the books once again. The pages showed some collectible amounts from customers I supplied metal and auto parts. The next day I went to collect the payments. Mr. Fajardo looked surprised. “There must be a mistake. We paid the bills completely the other day. Otherwise, Emil would not leave us in peace.” - My wife said, “he was coming early at two in the afternoon, he used to tell me that you were meeting your old comrades and you sent him home early.” And ask him, “how’s the shop?” He replied, ‘The shop is good, good, there is a little slack but good, don’t worry, leave it all to me I will manage.’

Manong Isidro, a peddler of soy milk who used to spend the afternoon in my shop, to help and be paid an extra half-day wage asked me, “Where is the young apprentice you had?” - I told him. “Look here,” the old man said. “Keep this to yourself. You remember they lived next door to us, those people from Ermita?” He made sure that there was no other eavesdropping before he continued, “Your boy was socializing with them a little too much. You know there was a tall, pretty girl with them. Your fellow was taking her out every afternoon in a taxi, those people went back to Ermita a few days ago.” This information led me to inquire more about Emil. I learned that there were a couple of loans of branded shirts, jeans, perfumes, and wristwatches, a pair of jackets that were left unpaid in his name, and left a promissory note under my guarantee. I learned his father is all well and has never been ill. This information came from his near relative who was once employed by one of my suppliers of motorcycle brakes. In tallying these accounts of information, Emil was never known to have visited Sorsogon.

I sold my shop and all things I have achieved through my hard-earned money and effort, paid off all my credits, and left Pasay. I was bankrupt, with a wife and three children to keep up with, living on the charity of friends, relatives, and unknown people. Sometimes nobody would feed us and we threw ourselves at night time in Luneta Park. I know I don’t need to exhaust you of my account of struggles. I must tell you about Emil. I have to add only this coming from my own and not from any hearsay. 

Four years later I came across a welding shop owner in Quezon City where they manufacture scrap metal thin plates and made them into an art deco for home wall ornamentation. I looked at the displays which looked like a harem of peafowls all around the shop. But there’s one hanging alone on the wall that caught my curiosity, an iridescent blue, white, purple, and green peacock with its train all spread out. “Beautiful isn't it?” Said the man wearing a red beret “Yes, it is!” - Our conversation started from there and he trusted me swiftly and gave me a fresh start, and I must say thanks to him, and my experience and knowledge in the metal business joined together. All I can say is the event has fallen into unexpected synchronicity.  

Now about Emil, A year ago I was walking along Baclaran while enjoying my survey of bargain clothes and toys for children: I had passed a few steps of the sidewalk along with the sampaguita vendors. When a familiar voice echoed resoundingly to my ears from among the group of vagrants lined along the way. I stopped. And there he was, I could hardly recognize him now. I had seen him off ten years before. 

Quickly it came to flash the last I could remember his face, waving goodbye and never coming back. His face was now dark, scarred, and dented. His eyes were fixed in gaze. I could not have noticed him if he hadn’t called out for alms. His voice never changed. I stopped and said, “Look here.” He sensed my presence but did not recognize, “I can’t see, I am blind” He said in a raspy voice “Who are you? Where do you come from?” I asked in a voice that I tried to disguise. “Go! go your way. Why do you want to know all that?” He said. I told myself in the name of my family that if I see him again I would tear his flesh and break his bones, but this was not at all I had hoped to meet him again. I felt confused and unhappy. I dropped a coin on his raised palm and passed on. But after moving a few steps I stopped and beckoned another beggar sitting by his side. He came up. I held up another coin before him and said. “You may have this if you tell me something about the blind man” - “I know him,” said this beggar, who had no arms. “We keep together. He has arms but no eyes; I have eyes but no arms and so we find each other helpful. We moved about together. He came here about two years ago; He once had a lot of money in Ermita, Pampanga, or somewhere. Glaucoma took away his sight. His wife, a bad sort, deserted him... But surely you would not tell him I have spoken all this? He becomes wild if those days are mentioned.” 

I went back to Emil, stood there before him, and watched him for a moment. I felt like shouting, ‘Emil, what a misfortune you have suffered enough. Now come with me. Where is your sweetheart? Where is my money?’ But I checked on myself that the greatest kindness I could do for him now is to leave him alone. I silently took out a fifty pesos paper bill and placed it on his hands - immediately he kept the money inside a grubby sling bag, he brought his palm together as if in prayer and said gratefully “Salamat po!” I had already moved a few steps when I heard him say, “Patawad po” as his way of asking for mercy and alms. I stopped. I did not turn my head to have another look at him. I smiled and went ahead because there is no other way now but to move forward.

How Rhode Island Fell to the Coronavirus PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The numbers began ticking up in September. After a quiet summer, doctors at Rhode Island Hospital began seeing one or two patients with Covid-19 on each shift — and soon three. Then four. Cases climbed steadily until early December, when Rhode Island earned the dubious distinction of having more cases and deaths per 100,000 people than any other state in the country. The case rate still puts it among the top five states. Where did this tightly knit state go wrong? Former Gov. Gina Raimondo’s “pauses” on economic activity were short-lived and partial, leaving open indoor dining, shopping malls and bowling alleys. But the shutdowns were no patchier than those in many other states. Until late summer, she was lauded for reining in the virus. Even now, few residents blame her for the bleak numbers. (Ms. Raimondo was sworn in as the secretary of commerce on Wednesday night.) Experts point instead to myriad other factors, all of which have played out elsewhere in the country but converged into a bigger crisis here. The fall chill sent people indoors, where risk from the virus is highest, and the holidays brought people together. Rhode Island is tiny — you can traverse it in 45 minutes. But crammed into that smallish area are a million people, for a population density second only to that of New Jersey. If everyone in the world is connected by six degrees of separation, Rhode Islanders seem to be connected by maybe two. Central Falls, the epicenter of Rhode Island’s epidemic, has a density of 16,000 people per square mile, almost twice that of Providence. “Just imagine, 16,000 people per square mile — I mean, that’s amazing,” said Dr. Pablo Rodriguez, a member of the government committee that guides Covid vaccine distribution in Rhode Island. “It doesn’t take much for the spark to create an outbreak.” Apart from its density, Rhode Island has a high percentage of elderly residents in nursing homes, accounting for the bulk of deaths. Packed into the state are multiple urban areas — Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence — where language barriers, mistrust and jobs have left immigrant families in multigenerational homes particularly vulnerable. The state is also home to multiple colleges that set off chains of infection in the early fall. For months, the hospitals in Rhode Island were understaffed and overwhelmed. Doctors and nurses were trying to cope with rising caseloads, often without the protective equipment they needed, with constantly shifting guidelines and with their own resilience stretched to the limit. Dr. Megan Ranney, a researcher and public health advocate, is also an emergency room physician at Rhode Island Hospital who has witnessed the full scope of the state’s crisis firsthand. What she saw unfold over a single shift offers a window into what happened. Plowing Through It One day in late December, as the crisis reached new heights, Dr. Ranney girded for a long eight-hour shift. The sores behind her ears, where her glasses and the straps of the N95 and surgical masks dug in, still had not healed. But how could she complain, Dr. Ranney said, when her medical residents “eat, sleep, breathe Covid” five days a week? The patients had it worse, she knew. Anxious and isolated, they became even more discomfited by the masked and unrecognizable doctors and nurses rushing around them. During Dr. Ranney’s shift the prior week, she had seen a broad spectrum: elderly people on a downward spiral, otherwise healthy young Latino men, Cape Verdean immigrants with limited English comprehension. These demographics are partly what made Rhode Island particularly susceptible, said Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of the School of Public Health at Brown University in Providence: “Certainly in New England, it is the poorest state — so a lot of poverty, and a lot of multigenerational poverty.” As in most of the country, the Latino community has borne the brunt of the epidemic. In Rhode Island, Latinos have 6.7 times the risk for hospitalization and 2.5 times the risk of death, compared with white people. In the days before her shift, Dr. Ranney had been working in a part of the hospital intended to deal with non-Covid cases. But even people with other ailments, like ankle fractures, turned out to be positive for the virus, she found. “I never know from day to day how bad the surge will be,” she said. “I’ve just got to plow through it.” It turned out to be an extraordinarily busy day. “The E.R. is full, the hospital is full, the intensive care unit is full,” Dr. Ranney said. “All of our units are moving as quickly as they can, but the patients keep coming in.” Every time she took off masks during a shift, she ran the risk of contaminating herself. She had had four cups of coffee before this shift, and nothing since. The average age of the patients that night was about 70. One elderly woman who had trouble breathing could not isolate because she lived with her children and grandchildren. At any rate, she arrived at the hospital 10 days into her illness, too late for isolation to matter. Updated  March 5, 2021, 5:03 a.m. ET Rhode Island’s epidemic has been disastrous for immigrant families in multigenerational households. “How do you isolate from someone when you have one bathroom?” Dr. Ranney said. It’s a problem throughout this diverse state. When Djini Tavares, 60, became infected in July, she was prepared to spend about $120 a night at a hotel — a sum many in her Cape Verdean community cannot afford — to isolate from her vulnerable 86-year-old father. Even before the pandemic, Ms. Tavares was fastidious about hygiene, keeping mounds of wipes and cleaning supplies in the house at all times. She could not imagine where she had picked up the virus. The loss of her godmother and a friend to Covid-19 had shaken her. Cape Verdeans are a close-knit community, and not being able to mourn the dead has been painful, Ms. Tavares said: “Culturally, I think it’s causing us to hurt even more.” On her shift, Dr. Ranney encountered Covid-19 patients who had blood clots or heart problems, or who still needed oxygen weeks after their diagnosis. Many patients had been very careful — or said they had — but were infected after a family member brought the virus into the household. The story is told too often in Rhode Island. Abby Burchfield, 58, lost her mother and stepfather to Covid-19 within days of each other at an assisted living center in New Jersey in April. Devastated and afraid, she and her family stayed away from restaurants, washed their hands often, and tried to wear masks everywhere. It wasn’t enough. Ms. Burchfield’s younger daughter, Lily, 21, became infected at her college in Virginia in August and was hospitalized. Then, in late October, her husband, Jimmy, 58, caught the virus from a co-worker who was infected but did not wear a mask. Despite Ms. Burchfield’s best efforts she, too, was infected. She was hospitalized after she collapsed suddenly in the family kitchen. She recovered, but her husband, who was also admitted to the hospital, still has no taste, a limited sense of smell, and continuing fatigue. “My biggest fear right now is protecting my older daughter,” Ms. Burchfield said. Workplace exposures have especially hurt the Latino and Cape Verdean community, many of whom hold jobs that cannot be done from home. But in state surveys, it also became obvious that people still were holding get-togethers of 15 to 20 people even as the virus spread, said Dr. James McDonald, medical director of the Covid-19 unit at the Rhode Island Department of Health. What You Need to Know About the Vaccine Rollout “People weren’t willing to live differently during the pandemic,” he said. Dr. Ranney said there were several such cases in the emergency room that night. “It’s frustrating to see patients come in from car crashes when they were not wearing a seatbelt, or to see patients with a firearm injury because the firearm wasn’t stored safely,” she said. “It’s like that to see folks with Covid.” The Masks ‘Were Disgusting’ Some nights in emergency medicine, the diagnoses and treatments are immediately obvious. But on this shift, Dr. Ranney said, “there was very, very little that was straightforward or smooth.” A number of patients with substance abuse problems appeared, as well as people with mental illness who had become a danger to themselves. And “we’re seeing a lot of people who are just lonely,” she said. Dr. Ranney would get a respite, but many medical residents and nurses in Rhode Island were already burning out. Some felt that hospital administrators had not protected them. Early in the pandemic, most health care workers in Rhode Island, as in other parts of the country, did not have N95 masks. The masks are single-use, but when the nurses received an N95 each, they were asked to place them in paper bags at the end of their shift and put them back on again the next day. “They stunk, they were slimy, they were disgusting. They made your face break out,” said a nurse at Rhode Island Hospital, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the hospital had instructed employees not to speak to the news media. If a strap broke, the mask would be returned with new straps stapled on. “The staples would dig into your face,” the nurse said. Many nurses got just 40 hours of sick time a year, which roughly translated to three 12-hour shifts; a fourth day out might earn a reprimand. Because of this, many nurses weren’t tested, and some came to work even when they were sick. At Eleanor Slater Hospital in Cranston, R.I., ill staff members led to an outbreak of at least 29 employees and nine patients. It’s a phenomenon seen in hospitals throughout the United States. The rules for patients don’t always accord with the science, said one nurse at Rhode Island Hospital. At first, the hospital did not allow anybody up from the E.R. until test results were back. But as the first surge ebbed, the rules became lax. Patients were sent up with pending test results, potentially exposing other patients as well as the nurses who cared for them. After treating one such patient, at least nine nurses tested positive for the virus, the nurse said. The policy at most hospitals in Rhode Island now is to have health care workers wear N95 respirators or similar reusable masks at all times, and to test anyone suspected of having Covid-19. But that does not account for patients who might be asymptomatic and who come in for other ailments. Rhode Island has adopted one unusual approach: Officials are distributing vaccines to anyone who will take them in Central Falls, regardless of age. It’s a strategy that few other jurisdictions have tried. “We decided to do that because of the horrific toll of the pandemic in those communities,” said Dr. Rodriguez, the vaccine committee member. Twenty percent of the adult residents have received at least one dose at local clinics, not including those who may have been immunized at work or elsewhere. The state’s plan to immunize those at highest risk by age and geography, he added, “will put out the fire where it is burning the most intensely.” In recent weeks, the number of cases in Rhode Island have fallen, as they have in the rest of the country. And fewer health care workers are getting sick because they have been immunized, so hospital shifts are better than they used to be, Dr. Ranney said. But cases in the state are still the third highest per capita in the country. Had accident which was my fault in Nov 08, hit a van in rear that stopped suddenly going through a roundabout (less than 5mph) and his trailer hitch ball went into my radiator and damaged the hood, grill and radiator. Car was 1996 Honda in very reasonable condition, MOT'd and all in good service despite its 125,000 mileage, new tyres, exhaust, battery, and clean throughout. Had fully comprehensive insurance with 50 deductable, loaner car and legal support so paid to be protected. When car was collected from accident, collecting garage said at that time that due to the mileage my car would not be repaired. However it took 5 to 6 weeks for the insurance examiner to determine that my car was beyond repair, so I did without a car all that time. Despite repeated phone calls to them, they never called me back as their examiner was on holiday. Then when we finally agree that a price of 500 for my car in January 08 and that took some haggling, the cheque never and so I started chasing them down in early February. I am then informed that I did not disclose a speeding violation on my application and they would have to listen to the tapes of my applying to verify this. Again this took several weeks, and I again had to pursue them for an answer to which they then said I had applied on the internet so no record of a phone conversation. The internet application was misleading, asking for what I believed was 3 years worth of offenses. I've only ever had 2 speeding offenses in my entire life - both speed cameras, just over the limit. The first was at 6 a.m. and I passed a bus pulling over to stop and as I passed it got flashed. The second on the day I found my dad had days to live and I was rushing to catch a flight, and as in both instances was doing 42 mph in a 30 mph zone for a very short period. Nonetheless, I was speeding and paid my fines. I wrote to the insurance company and apologised for not telling them of the other speeding ticket from 4 years and 9 months earlier as I forgot about it. But I admitted it, and apologised in writing. Then then came back to me saying that there would be additional premium to pay before I would get paid for my car. Well, its October 08, and I finally got a letter from the insurers saying they are not paying me as I failed to pay the additional premium requested and they were not going to renew my policy. I have never been asked even after repeated letters to them how much the additional premium was, and what I should do. No replies. I have asked for my car back which they agreed to pay for, and now they state there is nothing they can do, and it is their final decision. I went to the financial ombudsman and unbelieveably DID NOT get a reply from them. I've even spoken to one of their survey staff who tells me that they are incredibly busy and it was probably put aside and not dealt with. I'm at a total loss as to where I stand and how to pursue this without spending more than the accident and car was worth. I've written to their data protection officer and obtained copies of all documentation pertaining to this, so by their records can verify all this information quite clearly. Finally, I maintained my cool with them at all times. Never once did I raise my voice or become unprofessional with them. My questions are: 1. Can I legally request my car back as it has never been paid for? 2. Were they taking money for policy on a car they knew that through mileage alone, they would never pay for loaner car, or to have repaired? 3. This has meant over 30 letters and more phone calls than that to deal with, and rarely do they call you back or reply at all. Can I claim for this time and distress? 4. Am I totally wasting my time? I was rear-ended back in March of 2012. I was at a complete stop on the freeway and the guy hit me going about 30 mph. I finally watched Legend.

This short music clip sums up how they portrayed Ron. Which I find is problematic.

The film portrays Ron as the problem. Ron and Teddy are the violent, blood thirsty people and Reggie is the one who has to clean up his brother and his brother’s boyfriend’s messes.

Reggie is seen as dragged down by Ron. Ron is a villain. Reggie is a anti-hero dragged down by his brother. That is what I have the problem with. The trying to make one brother good and one bad. 

If anything Reggie should be more accountable than Ron. Ron as a baby was very sick and nearly died, and the extremely high fever did seem to mess with his brain, as mentally after that he was always a bit more unstable than Reggie.

The film portrays Reggie as a caring brother. Who bribes a mental hospital to get his brother released. The scene is almost like ‘aw, look how much he cares about his brother. He would do anything to get him out.’ I see the opposite here. A very unhealthy relationship of Reggie taking advantage of his mentally ill brother.

If he truly cared, why would he get him out? Why would be reintroduce his brother into the gang world?

The movie hints at how codependent and possessive Ron is, but from the history I have read, it would seem Reggie is equally codependent and possessive of his brother and encouraged Ron. Such as moving his wife to live in the same apartment and allowing his brother and Teddy to bully her. He set no boundaries with his brother.

I have also heard the rumours the twin’s were involved in a sexual relationship, and I feel in some parts the film hints at this. The incest rumours are woven into the twins history and I think the film plays with them.

But I don’t like how the film cast the twins. As Ron holding Reggie down. If anything, it should be the opposite. Ron was insane. Reggie was not. As the film portrays. But the film puts all the blame on the insane guy while Reggie’s role of an enabler is ignored.

I wouldn’t watch this film as a crime film. I think it is better as a study of an abusive relationship. And I’m not talking about Reggie and France. I’m talking about the much more subtle abusive relationship between the twins. How they are toxic to each other but refuse to let each other go.

Reggie enables Ron and his codependent nature makes him selfishly refuse to let Ron go, even for treatment. While Ron purposely tries to push everyone around Reggie away. His wife, his business, his friends, as his destructive nature wants to bring Reggie down to his level and destroy them both together. It is a very sick relationship. And I don’t mean that because of the incest. That has nothing to do with the problems in their relationship.

But I don’t know, this movie really got to me. I am pretty sure I hate it. But I am glad I watched it. But it is actually worth seeing for he psychological elements. The title instead 'Legend’ also leads to a billion problems.

But I actually caught this movie last week on a plane to Japan.

It’s interesting. I’ll give it that.

Also, I don’t know if I was reading into the hints of incest because I had already read about them, or of the film knew the stories and purposely put them there. Am I projecting or is the film subtly hinting they know the rumours about the brothers as well? Hmmmmmm. This film messes with my head.

I still intend to watch this movie eventually but haven’t gotten around to it. I understand why the decision to pick a “good” brother was made for a movie--because it’s a movie, and there has to be a character that you can feel sympathy for and root for. Making it completely accurate means that most people wouldn’t have been able to connect with it, but everyone loves a sympathetic anti-hero.

Anyway, there has been a lot of discussion around the Krays and Teddy Smith on here before so there are plenty of different view points and facts to explore in the Kray tag for this blog. I want to avoid another big discussion surrounding them because everything’s really been said and it takes an awful lot of time for my to get through my inbox. Thanks for sharing though :)

Ned Land

COMMANDER FARRAGUT was a good seaman, worthy of the frigate he commanded. His ship and he were one. He was its very soul. On the cetacean question no doubts arose in his mind, and he didn't allow the animal's existence to be disputed aboard his vessel. He believed in it as certain pious women believe in the leviathan from the Book of Job - out of faith, not reason. The monster existed, and he had vowed to rid the seas of it. The man was a sort of Knight of Rhodes, a latter-day Sir Dieudonne of Gozo, on his way to fight an encounter with the dragon devastating the island. Either Commander Farragut would slay the narwhale, or the narwhale would slay Commander Farragut. No middle of the road for these two. The ship's officers shared the views of their leader. They could be heard chatting, discussing, arguing, calculating the different chances of an encounter, and observing the vast expanse of the ocean. Voluntary watches from the crosstrees of the topgallant sail were self-imposed by more than one who would have cursed such toil under any other circumstances. As often as the sun swept over its daily arc, the masts were populated with sailors whose feet itched and couldn't hold still on the planking of the deck below! And the Abraham Lincoln's stempost hadn't even cut the suspected waters of the Pacific. As for the crew, they only wanted to encounter the unicorn, harpoon it, haul it on board, and carve it up. They surveyed the sea with scrupulous care. Besides, Commander Farragut had mentioned that a certain sum of $2,000.00 was waiting for the man who first sighted the animal, be he cabin boy or sailor, mate or officer. I'll let the reader decide whether eyes got proper exercise aboard the Abraham Lincoln. As for me, I didn't lag behind the others and I yielded to no one my share in these daily observations. Our frigate would have had fivescore good reasons for renaming itself the Argus, after that mythological beast with 100 eyes! The lone rebel among us was Conseil, who seemed utterly uninterested in the question exciting us and was out of step with the general enthusiasm on board. As I said, Commander Farragut had carefully equipped his ship with all the gear needed to fish for a gigantic cetacean. No whaling vessel could have been better armed. We had every known mechanism, from the hand-hurled harpoon, to the blunderbuss firing barbed arrows, to the duck gun with exploding bullets. On the forecastle was mounted the latest model breech-loading cannon, very heavy of barrel and narrow of bore, a weapon that would figure in the Universal Exhibition of 1867. Made in America, this valuable instrument could fire a four-kilogram conical projectile an average distance of sixteen kilometers without the least bother. So the Abraham Lincoln wasn't lacking in means of destruction. But it had better still. It had Ned Land, the King of Harpooners. Gifted with uncommon manual ability, Ned Land was a Canadian who had no equal in his dangerous trade. Dexterity, coolness, bravery, and cunning were virtues he possessed to a high degree, and it took a truly crafty baleen whale or an exceptionally astute sperm whale to elude the thrusts of his harpoon. Ned Land was about forty years old. A man of great height - over six English feet - he was powerfully built, serious in manner, not very sociable, sometimes headstrong, and quite ill-tempered when crossed. His looks caught the attention, and above all the strength of his gaze, which gave a unique emphasis to his facial appearance. Commander Farragut, to my thinking, had made a wise move in hiring on this man. With his eye and his throwing arm, he was worth the whole crew all by himself. I can do no better than to compare him with a powerful telescope that could double as a cannon always ready to fire. To say Canadian is to say French, and as unsociable as Ned Land was, I must admit he took a definite liking to me. No doubt it was my nationality that attracted him. It was an opportunity for him to speak, and for me to hear, that old Rabelaisian dialect still used in some Canadian provinces. The harpooner's family originated in Quebec, and they were already a line of bold fishermen back in the days when this town still belonged to France. Little by little Ned developed a taste for chatting, and I loved hearing the tales of his adventures in the polar seas. He described his fishing trips and his battles with great natural lyricism. His tales took on the form of an epic poem, and I felt I was hearing some Canadian Homer reciting his Iliad of the High Arctic regions. I'm writing of this bold companion as I currently know him. Because we've become old friends, united in that permanent comradeship born and cemented during only the most frightful crises! Ah, my gallant Ned! I ask only to live 100 years more, the longer to remember you! And now, what were Ned Land's views on this question of a marine monster? I must admit that he flatly didn't believe in the unicorn, and alone on board, he didn't share the general conviction. He avoided even dealing with the subject, for which one day I felt compelled to take him to task. During the magnificent evening of June 25 - in other words, three weeks after our departure - the frigate lay abreast of Cabo Blanco, thirty miles to leeward of the coast of Patagonia. We had crossed the Tropic of Capricorn, and the Strait of Magellan opened less than 700 miles to the south. Before eight days were out, the Abraham Lincoln would plow the waves of the Pacific. Seated on the afterdeck, Ned Land and I chatted about one thing and another, staring at that mysterious sea whose depths to this day are beyond the reach of human eyes. Quite naturally, I led our conversation around to the giant unicorn, and I weighed our expedition's various chances for success or failure. Then, seeing that Ned just let me talk without saying much himself, I pressed him more closely. "Ned," I asked him, "how can you still doubt the reality of this cetacean we're after? Do you have any particular reasons for being so skeptical?" The harpooner stared at me awhile before replying, slapped his broad forehead in one of his standard gestures, closed his eyes as if to collect himself, and finally said: "Just maybe, Professor Aronnax." "But Ned, you're a professional whaler, a man familiar with all the great marine mammals - your mind should easily accept this hypothesis of an enormous cetacean, and you ought to be the last one to doubt it under these circumstances!" "That's just where you're mistaken, professor," Ned replied. "The common man may still believe in fabulous comets crossing outer space, or in prehistoric monsters living at the earth's core, but astronomers and geologists don't swallow such fairy tales. It's the same with whalers. I've chased plenty of cetaceans, I've harpooned a good number, I've killed several. But no matter how powerful and well armed they were, neither their tails or their tusks could puncture the sheet-iron plates of a steamer." "Even so, Ned, people mention vessels that narwhale tusks have run clean through." "Wooden ships maybe," the Canadian replied. "But I've never seen the like. So till I have proof to the contrary, I'll deny that baleen whales, sperm whales, or unicorns can do any such thing." "Listen to me, Ned - " "No, no, professor. I'll go along with anything you want except that. Some gigantic devilfish maybe . . . ?" "Even less likely, Ned. The devilfish is merely a mollusk, and even this name hints at its semiliquid flesh, because it's Latin meaning soft one. The devilfish doesn't belong to the vertebrate branch, and even if it were 500 feet long, it would still be utterly harmless to ships like the Scotia or the Abraham Lincoln. Consequently, the feats of krakens or other monsters of that ilk must be relegated to the realm of fiction." "So, Mr. Naturalist," Ned Land continued in a bantering tone, "you'll just keep on believing in the existence of some enormous cetacean . . . ?" "Yes, Ned, I repeat it with a conviction backed by factual logic. I believe in the existence of a mammal with a powerful constitution, belonging to the vertebrate branch like baleen whales, sperm whales, or dolphins, and armed with a tusk made of horn that has tremendous penetrating power." "Humph!" the harpooner put in, shaking his head with the attitude of a man who doesn't want to be convinced. "Note well, my fine Canadian," I went on, "if such an animal exists, if it lives deep in the ocean, if it frequents the liquid strata located miles beneath the surface of the water, it needs to have a constitution so solid, it defies all comparison." "And why this powerful constitution?" Ned asked. "Because it takes incalculable strength just to live in those deep strata and withstand their pressure." "Oh really?" Ned said, tipping me a wink. "Oh really, and I can prove it to you with a few simple figures." "Bosh!" Ned replied. "You can make figures do anything you want!" "In business, Ned, but not in mathematics. Listen to me. Let's accept that the pressure of one atmosphere is represented by the pressure of a column of water thirty-two feet high. In reality, such a column of water wouldn't be quite so high because here we're dealing with salt water, which is denser than fresh water. Well then, when you dive under the waves, Ned, for every thirty-two feet of water above you, your body is tolerating the pressure of one more atmosphere, in other words, one more kilogram per each square centimeter on your body's surface. So it follows that at 320 feet down, this pressure is equal to ten atmospheres, to 100 atmospheres at 3,200 feet, and to 1,000 atmospheres at 32,000 feet, that is, at about two and a half vertical leagues down. Which is tantamount to saying that if you could reach such a depth in the ocean, each square centimeter on your body's surface would be experiencing 1,000 kilograms of pressure. Now, my gallant Ned, do you know how many square centimeters you have on your bodily surface?" "I haven't the foggiest notion, Professor Aronnax." "About 17,000." "As many as that?" "Yes, and since the atmosphere's pressure actually weighs slightly more than one kilogram per square centimeter, your 17,000 square centimeters are tolerating 17,568 kilograms at this very moment." "Without my noticing it?" "Without your noticing it. And if you aren't crushed by so much pressure, it's because the air penetrates the interior of your body with equal pressure. When the inside and outside pressures are in perfect balance, they neutralize each other and allow you to tolerate them without discomfort. But in the water it's another story." "Yes, I see," Ned replied, growing more interested. "Because the water surrounds me but doesn't penetrate me." "Precisely, Ned. "Fire and brimstone!" Ned put in. Calculate, then, how much resistance of bone structure and strength of constitution they'd need in order to withstand such pressures!" "They'd need to be manufactured," Ned Land replied, "from sheet-iron plates eight inches thick, like ironclad frigates." "Right, Ned, and then picture the damage such a mass could inflict if it were launched with the speed of an express train against a ship's hull." "Yes . . . indeed . . . maybe," the Canadian replied, staggered by these figures but still not willing to give in. "Well, have I convinced you?" "You've convinced me of one thing, Mr. Naturalist. That deep in the sea, such animals would need to be just as strong as you say-if they exist." "But if they don't exist, my stubborn harpooner, how do you explain the accident that happened to the Scotia?" "It's maybe . . . ," Ned said, hesitating. "Go on!" "Because . . . it just couldn't be true!" the Canadian replied, unconsciously echoing a famous catchphrase of the scientist Arago. But this reply proved nothing, other than how bullheaded the harpooner could be. That day I pressed him no further. The Scotia's accident was undeniable. Its hole was real enough that it had to be plugged up, and I don't think a hole's existence can be more emphatically proven. Now then, this hole didn't make itself, and since it hadn't resulted from underwater rocks or underwater machines, it must have been caused by the perforating tool of some animal. Now, for all the reasons put forward to this point, I believed that this animal was a member of the branch Vertebrata, class Mammalia, group Pisciforma, and finally, order Cetacea. As for the family in which it would be placed (baleen whale, sperm whale, or dolphin), the genus to which it belonged, and the species in which it would find its proper home, these questions had to be left for later. To answer them called for dissecting this unknown monster; to dissect it called for catching it; to catch it called for harpooning it-which was Ned Land's business; to harpoon it called for sighting it-which was the crew's business; and to sight it called for encountering it-which was a chancy business.
