#713 - Devil’s Manners (Kitani Tatsuya) [Kagamine Rin]

Another underrated producer makes it to the list with his most famous song, the original title is Dances with the Devil or something like that, but this is the English title. Rin easily reaches the high notes to give that power, which is why she is the rock queen.

Powapowa-P quietly enters his third song. Another fan favorite, it’s a long and beautiful march through self-acceptance. Perhaps a healing song, not in terms of encouragement but more catharsis. The intro reminds of Dawn and Firefly?

Second in the Mannequin Trilogy, a shy counterpart to Vampire. Less provocative but more put together, in my opinion. It seems like the song is step away from the sexual nature of the album, but there are heavy hints the interest is uh… yeah.

For someone who has a healthy relationship, this song about a relationship gone sour seems… a stretch. It almost feels like a dysfunctional relationship is their thing. The mix of latin and rock guitar is a delicious combination and the tuning fits too!

#C-10 - CH4NGE (Giga) [Kafu]

Giga using KAFU? What would that be like? Apparently it’s this. I’m amused that someone like KAFU singing a Giga song, but it’s not bad. The get-up in the MV makes me tickle a bit though. I really like that style. Okay, let’s move on.

You know Orangestar makes Miku songs, and sometimes they sound like IA songs? This is one such song. Unlike IA, which breeze through the song, Miku kind of rests a bit, and take a emphasis here and there, but really on the fact she doesn’t know much.

Chaos Walking #1-2 (out of 3) by Patrick Ness (July 2021)

Todd Hewitt is the only boy in a town of men. Ever since the settlers were infected with the Noise germ, Todd can hear everything the men think, and they hear everything he thinks. Todd is just a month away from becoming a man, but in the midst of the cacophony, he knows that the town is hiding something from him -- something so awful Todd is forced to flee with only his dog, whose simple, loyal voice he hears too. With hostile men from the town in pursuit, the two stumble upon a strange and eerily silent creature: a girl. Who is she? Why wasn't she killed by the germ like all the females on New World?

Would I recommend it to anyone? Absolutely, a very good science-fiction book that handles really well a lot of very serious topics.

Level of (dis)satisfaction based on the summary and my expectations? I had seen the books at the library and thought they seemed nice before promptly forgetting about it. And then Amanda from Amandathejedi made a video about the movie (that you can watch here, go give her some love) and I though "RIP the fandom". AND THEN I made a friend who strongly recommended I read the books so I started them. I do not regret it, they're amazing.

My thoughts on it? They're just amazing. Eventhough I knew most of the important secrets from book 1 thanks to Amanda's video, watching how Todd discovered them and reacted to them was really nice. The writing style is pure genius, it goes amazingly well with the story: it's like we're in Todd's head or hearing his Noise, with all his verbal quirks and grammatical mistakes, I love it. There's a moment in book 1 that I thought was beautiful where Todd has a big brain moment about Viola and I just- I don't have the words, I had to put the book down.

The second book is even better, I died several times while reading it. Those books deal with super serious themes and the way it's done is really gut-wrenching. It's been a while since I've read a book or series that affected me so much. I have a hard time articulating how much I love those books, I can't wait to read the last book, especially after such a cliff-hanger but I have to make sure I read the books I need for my classes in September first, ugh.

C'est l'année de ses treize ans et, dans un mois, Todd Hewitt va devenir un homme. Il est le dernier garçon de Prentissville. Cette ville de Nouveau Monde est uniquement peuplée d'hommes. Depuis longtemps, toutes les femmes et les enfants ont disparu. A Nouveau Monde, chacun peut entendre les pensées des autres, qui circulent en un brouhaha incessant, le Bruit. Nul ne peut échapper au Bruit, nulle part, jamais. Mais un jour, Todd découvre un lieu où le bruit se tait…

Est-ce que tu le conseillerais à quelqu’un ? Totalement, un bon bouquin SF avec pas mal de sujets hyper sérieux super bien traités.

Niveau de déception/satisfaction par rapport au résumé et tes attentes ? Alors, je l’avais vu à Book in Bar et je m’étais dit “huh, ça a l’air sympa” avant d’oublier. Puis Amandathejedi a sorti une vidéo sur le film qui va sortir dans pas longtemps et j’étais en mode “RIP le fandom”. PUIS, je me suis fait un ami. Qui m’a fortement conseillé de les lire, c’est ses bouquins préférés et je me suis lancée dans la lecture du tome 1, et j’ai vraiment pas regretté.

Avis sans spoiler ? C’est absolument excellent. Même si je savais le plus gros des révélations, je voulais voir comment Todd apprenait et ses réactions. Le style d’écriture est vraiment prenant, tout est fait pour nous faire penser qu’on est dans la tête de Todd avec les fautes d’orthographe et les erreurs de prononciations. Y’a un moment que j’ai trouvé juste magnifique entre Todd et Viola vers la fin, Todd a un big brain moment et c’était *chef kiss*. Et la fin m’a fait remercier mon moi du passé d’avoir téléchargé les 3 tomes d’un coup.

Le tome 2 est encore mieux, j’ai décédé plusieurs fois en lisant ce tome. Ces bouquins ont des thèmes hyper sérieux et vraiment ils te prennent aux tripes. Ca fait longtemps que j’ai pas été autant affectée par des bouquins comme ça. J’ai beaucoup de mal à articuler à quel point j’ai adoré ces bouquins, j’ai trop envie de lire le tome 3 parce que le 2 finit encore sur un cliffhanger de la mort mais faut que je lise mes trucs pour les cours...

Finally bit the bullet and watched episode 27 after avoiding it for three days. It was worse and hurt even more than I thought it would.

Look at them so happy before everything went to shit.  He caught the fireflies again to recreate their first fake wedding night 😍

Ah remember the powerful guy back in episode 23 whose son tried to harm Ran Yan and was humiliated by Xiao Song and almost killed by Su Fu as payback? I knew this was going to bring trouble for XS and RY later. Well, he had ppl tailing RY and has evidence of her “sympathizing with enemy of the state” (the group SF is secretly still with, which is also kind of hilarious since this guy is SF’s direct boss) and endangering the court. Thank goodness it wasn’t as I had assumed about the lost pearl. I forgot that only XS and RY knew that XS had the Sui pearl.  If the emperor knew about the pearl, there would definitely have been some lost heads, not just lashes given.

And XS still trying his best to defend his wifey even though he’s still upset at her for the betrayal. But with the evidence against RY, the emperor ordered 15 lashes for her which XS said he would take. BUT RY WILL NEVER KNOW ABOUT IT BECAUSE RIGHT AFTER XS HAD ENDURED THE PUNISHMENT IN HER STEAD, THE HEAD EUNUCH TELLS XS THE EMPEROR ORDERED THAT RY STILL HAS TO ENDURE 10 LASHES FOR HER CRIME! Not only that, but XS has to PERSONALLY carry them out, and if he shows RY mercy, the imperial guards monitoring have orders to cane RY even harder. THEN, he was also ordered to divorce her 😭😭 XS demanded to see the emperor about his orders, but no such luck. Poor guy.

The pain and shock on XS’s face when he got those orders, the little tremble in his hand when he was handed the cane to cane RY, the way he tightened his jaw - hands down Toby Lee is the best actor in this drama. The way he can convey so much through each of his facial expressions and minuscule movements. From Toby Lee’s acting, you’d know exactly how XS’s feeling and what he’s thinking. He can bring so much to the surface and add so much depth to his character.

Look at him in pain after the whole ordeal and having to hurt RY. XS can barely stand from both the emotional pain and the physical pain from his own caning that he’d just endured. Yet after everything, XS still believes that RY must have had some hardship or good reason for taking the pearl that she couldn’t tell him. 😭💔

Of course they both have to angstily stare at the same moon in different parts of the city, thinking about each other, after their forced divorce. 😭💔😭

I’m not ready for them to not work as a team to solve crimes anymore 😭 The only thing keeping me going is knowing that Xiao Song will always try to do what he can to support Ran Yan behind the scene, even if he can’t show it and have to act distant and aloof towards her on the surface, and that Xiao Song and Ran Yan will have a happy ending together. I had skim the last episode to make sure. 😆

The Technomancer #1 introduction story (lore, movie) Having enjoyed GreedFall, I tried to test the previous rpg of Spiders studio, The Technomancer of 2016, it’s dark SF and cyberpunk atmosphere on planet Mars. We play Zachariah who will become a technomancer officer in the army of Abundance, a faction of the settlers of this planet that is at war with other factions. Zachariah is customizable, I chose to use the same face that is in the introduction of the game but by modifying it a bit, I changed the hairstyle, he has green eyes and he is not white. Currently I play with the “warrior style” with technomancer powers most of the time, I tried the “guardian” and don’t like it to much, the rogue style is good but a little bit more difficult to play than warrior. Zachariah chats with his friend Scott Seeker, before his departure to become a technomancer officer (1:52). Meeting with Sean Mancer the master of Zachariah to finalize his training before his departure (3:41). Training with the coaches of the 3 styles of fights: guardian, with mass / shield (4:47), rogue, with knife and pistol (4:53) and warrior with a baton, the powers of technomancy associating with the other 3 fighting styles (5:02). Zachariah finds his master Sean in the city to leave his mission and is bothered by another technomancer Alan Mancer (5:22). Arrived at the mission site and explanations (6:32). Locating places (7:28). Meet the taliters the creatures who invade the dome's exteriors and chat with Sean (7:58). Zachariah and Sean return to a secret location reserved for technomancers that contains some of their knowledge (9:05). Zachariah discovers the secret of the origin of the technomancers that is part of his initiation (10:41). Confrontation with the queen of the creatures (13:33). Painful awakening for Zachariah after the fight (14:48). Ceremony for Zachariah Mancer to become officer(15:33). Mission and assignment entrusted to Zachariah by Ian Mancer the great master technomancers (17:02). FR : Ayant apprécié GreedFall, je me suis tenté à tester le précédent rpg du studio Spiders, The Technomancer de 2016, à l'ambiance cyberpunk et plutôt dark sur la planète Mars. On incarne Zachariah qui va devenir officier technomancer dans l'armée d'Abondance. Zachariah est personnalisable, j'ai choisi d'utiliser le même visage que celui qui est dans l'intro du jeu mais en le modifiant un peu, j'ai changé la coiffure, il a les yeux verts et il n'est pas blanc. Pour l'instant pour mes débuts au combat, j'ai surtout utilisé le style du guerrier avec le baton électrifié et du roublard avec couteau électrifié et pistolet. Zachariah discute avec son ami Scott Seeker, avant son départ pour l'épreuve finale pour devenir officier technomancer (1:52). Rencontre avec Sean Mancer le maitre de Zachariah pour finaliser son entrainement avant son départ (3:41). Entrainement avec les entraineurs des 3 styles de combats : gardien, avec masse/bouclier (4:47), roublard, avec couteau et pistolet (4:53) et guerrier avec un baton, les pouvoirs de technomancie s'associant avec les 3 autres style de combat (5:02). Zachariah retrouve son maitre Sean dans la ville pour partir accomplir sa mission et est importuné par un autre technomancer Alan Mancer (5:22). Arrivé sur le lieu de la mission et explications (6:32). Repérage des lieux (7:28). Rencontre avec les talitres des créatures qui envahissent les extérieurs du dôme et discussion  avec Sean (7:58). Zachariah et Sean rentrent dans un lieu secret réservé au technomancers qui contient une partie de leur savoirs (9:05). Zachariah découvre le secret de l'origine des technomancers qui fait partie de son initiation (10:41). Confrontation avec la reine des créatures (13:33). Réveil douloureux pour Zachariah après le combat (14:48). Cérémonie d'intronisation pour Zachariah Mancer (15:33). Mission et affectation confié à  Zachariah par Ian Mancer le grand maitre des technomancers (17:02).

Ça faisait un moment que j'avais vu passer sur Boing Boing l'annonce de la sortie de Pwning Tomorrow, une anthologie de science-fiction réalisée au bénéfice de l'Electronic Frontier Foundation, une association américaine de défense des droits numériques.

(Anecdote amusante: une des affaires qui a motivé la création de l'EFF a un rapport direct avec le jeu de rôle, puisqu'il s'agit de la saisie du supplément GURPS Cyberpunk réalisée par les Services secrets US au siège de Steve Jackson Games en 1990.)

Si vous regardez la liste des auteurs qui ont contribué à cet ouvrage, c'est un petit peu l'équivalent SF d'un All-Stars Game: Neil Gaiman, Paolo Bacigalupi, Lauren Beukes, Kameron Hurley, David Brin, Cory Doctow, Hannu Rajaniemi, Bruce Sterling, Charles Yu et j'en passe.

Par contre, il n'y a rien d'inédit là-dedans: toutes ces nouvelles ont déjà été publiées ailleurs. Ce n'est pas très grave en soi: sur les vingt-et-un textes, il y en avait deux que j'avais déjà lus: "Scroogled", de Doctorow, et "The Smartest Mob" de David Brin, extrait de son roman Existence.

Le thème de Pwning Tomorrow tourne autour d'Internet, des lois et règlements, de l'avidité des corporations et des bizarreries qui peuvent apparaître ici ou là. Mais pas mal des textes sont plus dans un domaine de pur science-fiction – à part le dernier, j'y reviendrai.

Bien évidemment, dans le tas, il y a du bon et du moins bon, mais c'est globalement du bon, voire du très bon. Un des textes qui m'a le plus impressionné, c'est peut-être "The Light Brigade", de Kameron Hurley, qui est un peu éloigné du thème originel, mais qui raconte une guerre qui semble attaquer les fondements même de la réalité.

Dans une veine similaire, "His Master's Voice" de Hannu Rajaniemi raconte une histoire de casse dans un univers transhumaniste, du point de vue d'un chat et d'un chien augmentés. Sinon, "Scroogled", de Doctorow, est devenu presque un classique avec son histoire de l'immigration US gérée par les algorithmes de Google.

Je mentionnerais également "Nanolaw with Daughter", où un père explique à sa fille comment gérer les dizaines de citations à comparaître qu'elle reçoit chaque jour, ou "Business as Usual" et sa psychothérapie pour frigo connecté. Ou le très noir "Water" de Ramez Naam, dans un monde où tout est publicité.

Le texte le plus curieux, et également le plus long, est "Free Fall" de Carolyn Jewel, une novella qui pourrait très bien servir de départ à une série de romans d'urban fantasy érotique. Pas exactement dans le thème, donc, mais l'autrice est un des soutiens les plus anciens de l'EFF, plaignante principale dans un dossier contre l'accumulation de données informatiques sans mandat de justice.

Quoi qu'il en soit, Pwning Tomorrow est une anthologie de très haut niveau, avec une blinde de textes qui apportent un éclairage fictif et futuriste à des problématiques contemporaines et bien réelles. Vous pouvez l'obtenir contre une donation à l'EFF et elle est également disponible sous licence Creative Commons (CC-BY-NC-ND).

 Il ne faut JAMAIS regarder les séries ou les films sur l’éducation. Regarder Lulu Pompom mater les classes de ZEP grâce au pouvoir du bon prof™ c’est de la torture par la bêtise (mais je commence à connaître ton goût prononcé pour la souffrance !) Cela dit je n’ai pas de leçon à te donner sur ce point : mes corrections de copies étaient au collège pour ma part. C’était aussi long que ça y parait et après deux heures, je voyais trouble.

 Je n’ai pas accroché au Witcher, mais en ce moment je regarde His dark Material et je vais aussi pouvoir enchaîner avec The Mandalorian maintenant que la série est finie. Le problème c’est que si je m’investi trop dans l’histoire je vais arrêter de corriger les copies… Si tu as des séries de fantasy ou de sf pas trop longues à me recommander, je suis preneuse.

Alors, ok, j'ai l'air d'un cliché, à corriger mes copies devant une série sur une prof, mais en plus, c'est totalement invraisemblable.
