Sekh and Astarion enjoy some of the fall festivities in Wyrm's Crossing.

The crackle of multiple torches lighting the streets was comforting, as Sekh walked the streets of Rivington. All of Baldur's Gate was lively with festivities, but there was something about Wyrmâs Crossing that had completely embraced the chilly fall evening. Where once the Circus of Lost Days had stood, before the fall of the Netherbrain, was now a mess of various shop keeps and citizens selling food and drink for a night of festivities.
The entrance was a mess of children, playing games and daring each other to head over to the barn that had once housed supplies for the refugees- but was now an indoor market square for Wyrmâs Crossing. The outside of Baldurâs Gate had developed into its own expansion of the city- lively but freer, with more breathing room.
Yenna was at the center of a group of kids, ranging in age considerably. While she wasnât the oldest, it was quite obvious that while she was speaking everyone was listening.
It made Sekh smile. Yenna could command any situation, he was sure. He was proud of her for it- could only imagine the powerhouse of a woman she would grow up to be, someday.
But not too soon.
He folded his arms, his flowing shirt wisping about him like shadows, all the way to the ground. He had dressed up a bit, for fun. Mostly because Astarion had asked him to. Although the shirt had no sleeves and was only closed by a small belt at his waist, leaving bits of his belly and chest free- he was a bit cold.
âHow about instead of breaking and entering,â Sekh interjected, when it seemed Yenna was leaning towards that idea, âWe get something sweet to eat and you lot stuff yourselves silly by a fire?â
That had the kids cheering, all of them rushing around Sekh. Yenna proudly shouldered past some, taking Sekhâs hand, leading him to one of the confectionery shops that had set up outside the city walls for the night. Sekh let the children mass in front of him, all selecting more candy than any one person had a right to eat- and that was coming from him- before he was shooing them off, reminding them he wasnât interested in dealing with the Flaming Fists tonight. He spent enough time talking Yenna and her friends out of trouble- heâd like one night off, if it wasnât too much to ask.
He handed the gold it required to pay for that much sugar to the woman at the cart, who only gave him a little shake of her head. He knew her well, she and her sister ran a bakery he frequented often in the city. The woman at the stand made fun candies year round and her sister made the most amazing pastries.
âNothing for yourself?â she teased, pocketing his gold, âI think after all of that I can spare something sweet for you too, honey.â
Never one to say no to something sweet, Sekh accepted the overly sweet raspberry candy she gave him, popping it into his mouth and rolling it around with his tongue as he continued to mull about. He was a bit curious as to where Astarion had gotten himself to, last heâd seen him he had been enjoying a conversation with one of the men who worked at Sharressâs Caress.
Sekh dodged a flamboyantly dressed half-orc who was casting little bits of fire up into the air, letting them burst like wizbangs, much to the delight of onlookers. He headed for the locked gate to Ilmaterâs temple- found his vampire leaning against the gate, surrounded by a few women who were, quite frankly, fawning over him.
It made Sekh utterly grin.
âJust a bite,â one cooed, her pretty chestnut curls falling over her shoulders, bouncing against her barely concealed breasts. Sekh wasnât sure how she could breathe in the corset she was wearing, but he was impressed. âWe didnât even think the talk was true, that something ferocious was stalking Wyrmâs Crossing.â
Astarion chuckled, reached out to her and tipped her chin up slightly, looking at the expanse of her throat. âIâm quite real, and quite ferocious.â
She swallowed thickly, her throat bobbing, eyes bright as the full moon above. âWhat is your name?â another asked, a dwarf with pretty gold hair wrapped up in intricate braids.
âMy name,â he offered with a fang filled smile, âis Astarion, darling.â
The third woman reached up to fiddle with her necklace, as if she was dizzy. Sekh took a few steps closer, wondering if he needed to save the three from his partnerâs charm.
Astarionâs eyes flicked up at the noise of his footsteps- and his smile turned utterly adoring- the kind that left Sekhâs belly feeling light and fluttery. âAh, my sweet!â Astarion reached out as the women parted, allowed for Sekh to slip past them, for Astarion to take his hand and spin him into his side so he could hold him close. He was being ever so debonair it seemed, tonight. âI donât stalk about Rivington alone, I must admit. Every good horror needs a conscience, after all.â
Sekh gave the women a smile, as Astarion leaned in, pressed a kiss to his bare shoulder. The first woman leaned closer, clasping her hands together. âA drow! Do you work at Sharessâs Caress?â
It wasnât meant in malice, Sekh knew. Nym and Sorn were possibly the most well known drow in the city currently, and most folks that Sekh didnât encounter daily just assumed that was the only place to find a drow in Baldurâs Gate.
âOh no, I wouldnât share him that much.â Astarionâs arm around Sekhâs waist tightened. âMy darling here is too busy making the most glorious of potions in his little lab.â
Sekh rolled his eyes, but the women launched into more questions. He hadnât expected them to be quite as interested in him as they were- but when one asked if he had made the love potion- as she called it- that she purchased from one of the spas in the city and he confirmed he did, she simply lost herself- gushing over how it had given her the best night of her life.
Sekh didnât really care for the cliche love potion title that was often thrown on the aphrodisiac potions he could brew. They didnât cause love and they most certainly didnât make one blind to their own thoughts. They just heightened sensitivity, relaxed the body.
He was very careful to ensure they were never too strong- anytime he wanted to try a new recipe, he tested it on himself first. Astarion was left to deal with the consequences- which he had never once complained about. And there had been a few⌠incidents, where the dosage was too strong, or the ingredients too potent.
Mistakes Sekh enjoyed making, in the end.
While the one gushed over Sekh, the brunette moved back to Astarion, close enough that she could place a hand on his chest, batting thick lashes at him. âSo, about that biteâŚâ
Sekh dared a glance at Astarion, just a quick glimpse, trying to gauge how he was feeling about this conversation. Because if he was not mentally in a headspace to want anyone propositioning him, Sekh was more than prepared to kindly shut everything down. Their time before the Netherbrain, and the incident with Araj, were still fresh enough for Sekh to feel overly cautious about anyone asking for the blessing of Astarionâs fangs.
But what he saw was intrigue, interest. Sekh turned towards him, curled into his neck and whispered very softly, âif you want her, have her.â
He was very aware that all three women were watching the way he fit so perfectly against Astarion- with awe, with interest, not with malice. These were the best types to play with, Sekh knew. The moment a potential partner disliked the fact that Sekh and Astarion were established the drow was more than done with the situation. At the end of the night, no matter what happened, he belonged to Astarion, and the vampire would be warming his bed and his heart.
Astarion released Sekh, carefully plucking the womanâs- a human, Sekh thought- hand from his chest and flipping it over, tracing a line along her palm to the veins at her wrist. âJust a little taste,â he offered, âright. Here.â He tapped her wrist, and Sekh could see color blooming on her cheeks, down along her neck.
âNot here?â she asked, reaching up with her free hand, gently clasping at her own throat. But Astarion shook his head.
âThe wrist is best for just a taste, and it will be easier if you need to wrap it. Besides, Iâm feeling sentimental tonight- the only neck I want,â Astarion paused, glanced at Sekh, nodded towards him, âis his.â
The human didnât argue, just gave an understanding nod. Sekh stepped back, so that Astarion could pull her quite close, one hand on her waist, clutching at the overly soft fabric of her dress- the other cradling her wrist, bringing it close. Holding her stare, the vampire pressed a single kiss to her wrist, must have savored her pulse against his lips, before he pulled his lips back, bared his fangs and pressed them into her skin.
Sekh knew he hadnât bitten deep. The woman winced, but relaxed fairly quickly for a first bite. He knew the moment Astarion pulled his teeth from flesh, pressed his tongue to the wound- because her breath escaped her, her eyelids fluttering, the pain quickly becoming a throbbing pleasure.
Astarion remained only a moment at her wrist, before he lifted his head, red clinging to his lips, as if he had kissed lipstick from her mouth. He offered her a smile- there wasnât even blood in his teeth, the bite had been so shallow. He tipped his head back down, kissed her wrist, pressed his tongue openly over the wounds to gather up the blood that had beaded there, before lifting his head again, releasing her waist and holding her hand in both of his.
âKeep this slightly elevated and the bleeding will stop in a moment,â he instructed, and she just nodded, seeming unsure what to say, or even how to speak. She was simply looking at him with sparkling awe in her eyes.
Sekh understood.
He stepped from Astarionâs side as the other two women both asked for the same darling treatment, gently guiding the brunette back a step. âCan I wrap this for you?â he asked, and she nodded, as Sekh heard Astarion get down on his knee behind him, must have been holding a hand out to the dwarf.
Sekh reached into a small pouch at his belt, plucking out a single fabric wrap and guiding it around her wrist. At the first touch blood spread along the fabric, but it didnât soak beyond two layers. Sekh secured it carefully, before he guided her to bend her wrist, make sure it was comfortable.
âIt might be sore in the morning,â the drow offered, âso donât be alarmed and just be gentle with it.â She nodded, glancing past Sekh. He turned, caught sight of Astarion pulling off the dwarfâs wrist now, giving her another charming smile.
âHow do you share him?â she asked, softly. Sekh glanced back at her, and she was cradling her wrist to her chest now, still flushed. He would need to be blind to not see she was aroused. âGods I donât think Iâd be able to stand seeing him even look at someone else if he was mine.â
He offered her a soft smile. âAstarionâs freedom makes me happy. Besides, come the end of the night, I know whoâs arms heâs sleeping in.â He paused, before he added, âI trusted him when he gave me his heart, and Iâve never stopped.â
She nodded, nibbled at her lip. âDo you think heâd kiss me?â
That had Sekh chuckling. âSweetling, youâll just have to ask.â She gave a little nod, and Sekh turned back to the rest of the group, stepping away from her to get down on a knee and offer to wrap the dwarfâs wrist as well. She was much more alert than the first woman, seemed not to be in a dreamlike state. The last shook her head with a smile at Astarion when he offered his hand- seeming to decide after watching him bite both her friends that she didnât need to feel it herself.
Sekh stood up just as the brunette came closer, sliding up very close to Astarion, as he dragged his thumb along his lips, cleaning the last bit of blood off of them. âUhm, I was wonderingâŚâ she twisted her hands in her dress, and Sekh had the feeling she wasnât normally the one asking, that she was used to being chased. She had had plenty of bravado at first. âWould youâŚâ she trailed off, then added in the quietest voice, âkiss me?â
Astarion chuckled, got a hand on her waist and pulled her closer, tipping her chin slightly with his other hand and kissing her without question. She seemed to melt into him, pressed her hands flat to his chest between them, sliding closer, openly shivering as Astarionâs tongue traced the seam of her lips.
For a moment, Sekh wondered if Astarion would take her to bed. She was indeed pretty, and her interest would have been obvious, even without her asking. It wouldnât be hard to lead her back to Sharessâs Caress and get a room for a bitâŚ
Sekhâs thoughts broke off as the final woman suddenly tossed her arms around him, planting a kiss on his scarred cheek. He went a little wide eyed as she hugged him. âA proper thank you,â she said, leaning fully into his arm, her breasts soft against him, enticing. âFor giving me the best night of my life and not even being there. Honestly, I havenât been able to come in like weeks because of how tense Iâve been, and your little love potion made it so easy.â
She smacked another kiss to his cheek, before the dwarf was grabbing at her arm, trying to pull her back. âControl yourself a little and let him breathe.â The woman stepped back with a pout that had Sekh chuckling himself. It was a cute pout. Not as cute as Astarionâs, but still becoming.
He glanced back at his partner, found the woman had herself pressed flush to him now, her arms around his neck. He still had a hand on her waist, but the other was sliding up along her side, cupping one of her breasts and giving it a gentle squeeze. He heard her moan into his mouth, before Astarion broke the kiss, offering the woman a rather sweet smile.
âSorry darling, but as tantalizing as you are,â he paused, gave her breast another squeeze, her cheeks flushing deeply, âI believe this is where Iâm drawing a line tonight.â
She hesitated a moment, before only nodding, taking a step back from Astarionâs hold. Her friends moved to her, as Astarion gave them all a final smile and wished them a delicious evening, before he moved towards Sekh, taking his loverâs hand and steering him away from the group.
âYou could have taken them all to bed,â Sekh pointed out as they walked, moving back from the dark shadows near the gate to the temple into the liveliness of the evening.
âOh, I know. It would have been a night to remember.â Astarion paused, wrapping himself around Sekhâs arm, pausing their steps so he could kiss his exposed shoulder. âBut tonight I think Iâd simply like a night to remember with you.â
Sekh grinned- oh, he couldnât help it- and kissed Astarion slowly. The vampire seemed quite eager for the affection, chasing after Sekhâs mouth even after the drow pulled back, began walking again. âIâm flattered, especially considering the things you could have gotten up toâŚâ
âMmm, youâre thinking something pet. Do share.â Astarion moved to just hold his hand, fingers laced together, as Sekh led them out of the old circus area, into the streets of Rivington itself.
âWell, she did have very nice tits.â Astarion barked an unbecoming laugh at Sekhâs bluntness, and the drow simply grinned. âJust imagining you straddling her chest and⌠well, fill in the rest, love.â
Astarion was quiet for a moment as they walked, quite obviously imagining it for himself. Finally, as Sekh could just begin to see the bright flickering lights of large bonfires off in the hills, he said, âthat would have been a joy indeed. A shame you never left much of anything in the chest area for me to work with.â
It was Sekhâs turn to laugh, squeezing Astarionâs hand. âSorry love, those are long gone. You can try all you want, though. I would never stop you.â
Astarion grinned, wickedly, and paused, pulling Sekh so he stumbled a step and pressed against him. âOh darling, I absolutely will. Later, perhaps? I would love some⌠alone time with you.â His hands moved to Sekhâs hips, grasping them. âUnless I can tempt you into the shadows for a little love nowâŚâ
Oh, Sekh was very much tempted. And honestly, he had already caught plenty of glimpses of couples off in the shadows, having a bit of failed privacy. But perhaps letting Astarion stew in his desire could be fun.
Forget the could be, he knew it would be.
âLater,â Sekh promised, pecking his loverâs lips. Astarion gave a very cute pout, but kept up with Sekh when the drow began walking again.
âIâll hold you to that.â Astarion paused, seemed to hesitate for a moment. âIâm not sure there is a⌠good way to say this- oh to the hells with it- pet I can only imagine your tits were fantastic.â
Sekh nearly stumbled on the path, which had grown quite dark now, away from the bustling streets, towards the hills. He wheezed the most unbecoming laugh, a sharp but playful Astarion! mingled in the sound. Gods above what was he going to do with this man?
âThey were fine,â Sekh managed, trying to compose himself. Gods heâd gone under the knife years and years and years ago in the Underdark, it was hard to even remember. He had been quite young, his lifespan considered.
âNothing about you is just fine.â Still, Astarion let it rest- not that it bothered Sekh. His body was his body and Astarion was the best lover he had ever had in making him feel like the man he truly was.
He led the vampire past one of the bonfires, just catching sight of Yenna at one of the furthermost fires. She and the gaggle of children Sekh had already fed far too much sugar too were sitting around it, still finishing their little treats. At the sight of them Yenna waved eagerly, and Astarion swept from Sekhâs side, moving with his near infuriating undead grace along the throwing shadows of the firelight, until he had saddled up just behind her.
âHello little darling,â he teased, ruffling her hair adoringly. The entire group of kids had their eyes on him, always a little awestruck by the vampire. When Sekh moved into the light as well, their eyes moved with the same stare to him.
âKeeping out of trouble?â Sekh asked, as Astarion found an empty space on one of the logs around the fire and settled down onto it. The little tiefling boy next to him- Zhant, one of Yennaâs friends- grinned up at him as Astarion gave his hair a gentle stroke back from his forehead.
âYeah, just a little bored,â Yenna admitted, kicking her feet. Sekh thought for a moment, before he glanced at Astarion.
âStarshine, how about we tell the kids a nice little story?â
The vampire quirked a brow- but gave a devilish little grin. Scaring the kids just a little could be endlessly fun.
âI suppose I could think of something,â the vampire offered, reaching up to stroke his chin in fake thoughtfulness. Sekh stepped back slowly, so he was standing just outside the logs, as Astarion cleared his throat, leaning in towards the fire. âDid you know that the palace on the hills is haunted?â
While the kids perked up, Sekh felt his chest cramping slightly. He could only think of one palace that Astarion was referencing- one that was shuttered to the world and hadnât been opened since the death of one exalted vampiric master.
He caught Yennaâs smile faltering, just slightly. The other kids, however, were looking at Astarion skeptically.
âItâs true,â the vampire said, âdeep underneath it lives a monster, more terrible than youâve ever seen. He has claws harder and sharper than adamantine, and teeth like razors.â Astarion flashed his own fangs, letting the firelight hit them.
âI heard that place was empty now,â one of the kids that Sekh didnât know said. Astarion glanced at the boy, his eyes alight by the fire.
âEmpty of anything living. Once a man lived there, but the beast got him. The beast is always hungry. It likes soft, supple flesh. Tender.â Astarion leaned even closer, reached out and gently placed his chilled fingers on the boyâs arm. âFlesh like yours- children are always the tastiest.â
The kid jerked away, eyes a little wide, and some of the kids giggled, all still watching Astarion. Sekh stepped back into the shadows a bit more, thinking that despite the setting, Astarion seemed calm enough that he didnât need to be concerned.
âIf you so much as step foot in the palace, that monster will know. Oh, he always knows. And heâll call to you, sweetly- something you wonât hear, but youâll feel. Youâll walk even if you scream at your legs to stop, venture in deeper even if you cry to go back. And once youâre down in the depths, itâs cold as the dead, nothing but rock walls and the echo of water youâll never find. And it is oh so dark.â
The kids were leaning in now. Sekh smiled to himself, flexing his left hand, gently calling at Sylâs shadows. In his head he heard his patron giggling at what he had planned.
âAnd then, from the dark, youâll feel his tongue latching onto you, ready to devour you!â
Astarion growled as he spoke, and Sekh sent the shadows slithering along the ground, letting them brush at and wrap around little ankles. The kids all shrieked- even Yenna- nearly falling off the logs as they scrambled to pull their legs up away from what certainly had to be the monsterâs tongues.
Astarion started laughing before they had even calmed, leaning his arms onto his elbows and hanging his head. Sekh stepped into view from the shadows, smiling at all of them, making a show of playing with the shadows stemming from his hand. Yenna was the first to see him and to utterly grin. The other kids followed, switching from terror to bemusement in a breath, all of them clamoring about, turning attention from Astarion to Sekh and asking him to do tricks with his shadows.
Sekh let a few dance about them, got a few more shrieking laughs as he grabbed ankles or tapped noses, before some of the kids were trying to lead the group away, towards the woods. The candy entirely depleted now, there wasnât much to keep them sitting still.
âDonât go too far,â Sekh warned, looking at Yenna. She gave a toothy grin and a nod, before she raced off after the group, leaving Sekh to slump down onto a log next to Astarion, who was still giggling himself. âThat was the last place I would have expected you to set a story.â
The elf straightened up, pushing his curls back into proper place. âItâs the most haunted place I know, pet. Always tell the story you know.â Sekh slid a little closer, rubbed a hand soothingly along Astarionâs back. The vampire almost purred at the touch, content to sit by the fire with Sekh, lean his head on his shoulder. âWasnât our darling wizard and his siblings supposed to be out and about?â
Sekh hummed. Rolan had said Cal and Lia were going to drag him out that night. âWe should go look for them. And maybe get a drink.â
âRed or redder?â Astarion teased. He lifted his head and gave his little wicked smile.
âYou can have red as you want, I heard talk of cider and whiskey, and that is what Iâm going for.â Sekh stood up, offering his hand to Astarion, who took it gladly.
The vampire snorted at his answer. âReally pet? Seems I am going to have some fun with you tonight if youâre drinking like that.â

Preparing for the High Holy Days in Algiers
As the first fruits of they year appeared in the street markets, Jewish housewives busied themselves preparing festive dishes, jams and jelly for the High Holy Days. The chidren enjoyed waffles, biscuits and ice cream. Caroline Elisheva Rebouh shares her memories of childhood in Algiers in the Morial newsletter (With thanks: Leon):

In the last days of the summer holidays, mothers were busying themselves with the household chores in readiness for the Jewish High Holy Days of Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur and Succot.
The families gathered around festive meals. They needed to prepare traditional dishes in advance for guests to sample, and especially pre-prepared confectionery and pastries. At the time, few of us had a refrigerator.
The markets overflowed with fruit of all kinds: housewives selected quinces, white-flesh sweet potatoes, figs, and pinkish grapes.
The quinces were chosen carefully to be almost sure that they were not âvisitedâ by unwanted worms. They were rinsed, peeled and cut into quarters â hard to do as the fruit was hard. The seeds were removed and reserved separately for jam and quince jelly. People loved it at the end of the Yom Kippur fast!
The fruits were boiled to soften the flesh so that the sugar syrup seeped into the flesh of the fruit and the sugar remained clear. It was during this operation that the seeds (quince cores) were added so that the pectin let the syrup gel. Some of the boiled quinces were cooked over low heat. During the prolonged simmering, sugar was added in small quantities, while the mix was stirred to make a fruit paste.
The figs were also quickly turned into a light-coloured and appetizing jam.
The grapes: we chose a variety called âbou amarâ : the grapes were round, relatively large and pink. Mothers armed their children with fresh feathers to deseed the grapes. The jam was also pinkish and pleasant, and some mothers would wrap the seeds of the grapes in fresh compresses to make jelly.
A little later there would appear small apples of a very pale green and with light pink spots on the side which were used for the Rosh Hashanah seder and which were called Kabyle apples. Small white and pink peaches with firm, tender and fragrant flesh were also called Kabyle (Berber) â no doubt coming from Kabylia.
In Algiers, we children ignored the entire selihoth period. We only experienced the season through the pleasure of tasting small amounts of candy floss, fine biscuits and other delights.
During and at the end of summer, small stalls âfloweredâ on street corners: the yaouled (children or young teenagers) offered us freshly-picked prickly pears which they peeled with dexterity and presented them on fig tree leaves so that our little fingers did not touch the thorns. Other yaouled offered grilled corn on the cob: we savoured them on the benches in the public gardens where we played with our cousins, neighbors and classmates.
From time to time, we gathered around small confectioners who tempted us with sugar of different colours which they sold in small quantities. We sucked them by holding them between our fingers and then crunched our teeth on them.
The waffle merchants announced their passage by waving wooden boards with handles on both sides. festooned with mini-shutters which tinkled with a dry and dull sound.
At that time we liked our waffles a little thicker than ice cream cones. They were rolled up in cones and stacked in a sort of cylinder about one meter high. The merchant placed it at ground level to serve his young customers.
But fine biscuits werenât the only popular waffles: at Grosoli, a popular ice cream parlor in Algiers, the ice cream cups were decorated with a fan or a fine rolled biscuit.The Bitone company also marketed what were called âfunny wafersâ : they carried short slogans like âYou wonâ or âI love youâ.
When many years later we found ourselves in Marseille, we could no longer find ice creams like those of Algiers.

Kai realises how deprived Cinder has been in her childhood pretty quickly. Half because he hates Adri and knows that she treated Cinder horribly, and half because Cinder doesn't hide it as well as she thinks. When Cress eats brownies for the first time, excited and awed, Kai notices Cinder's hovering gaze on the treat and how, when she takes a bite, her reaction is too amazed for someone who's eaten brownies before.
Then as queen of Luna, Cinder gets to try all manner of sugary delicacies. But not Commonwealth sweets. Whenever she visits, Kai has the chefs prepare the fanciest, most decadent takes on Commonwealth desserts. Cinder loves it, of course, but what is sweeter is all the attention he's paying her.
Alas, Kai should not think himself an expert on such things, as he has missed out too. All the desserts he's ever had are artful, perfect creations from the palace patisseries. But when they go to the Peace Festival Market and sample the street food, the moon cakes and mochi and halo-halo, it's a new experience for both. And let's be honest, street food is always better than Michelin star dining.
Anyway, Cinder doesn't really have a sweet tooth, and soon all this sugar is too much. She begs him to stop, and he agrees reluctantly, but she will still occasionally find a bag of lollies on her desk (only half-full; Kai does have a sweet tooth and claims some as 'tax').

A package has been left by the Imperial Spy's Delivery Boy on Hubert's desk. A letter with the imperial symbol lay stamped neatly on top under the twine tying it to the parcel. When opened, it's written in the signature Vestra Cypher: "My Dearest Hubert, Another year has passed, and I am thankful to celebrate it with you. My goodness, you have grown so much. I am unable to see your face up close, but from the presentations you've given with Her Majesty in Enbarr you have become a fine young man indeed. Though I do worry about how much you're eating. Your cheeks have gone a bit thin, and I know you've always had a picky palette, but please listen to Lady Edelgard when she's asking you to rest. Lest you enjoy giving me more gray hairs. Your siblings are doing well. Your sister, ever antsy, has been taking her homeschooling as well as she can, but she misses her friends. She's always complaining about when you're going to come visit us. She knows you're a busy fellow, but she's always looked up to you as soon as she could crawl. I keep having to ration her sugar intake with the war provisions; you know how many cakes she can put away. Your brother's getting taller, though I don't think he'll be as tall as you once he's grown. He's nearly in his teens now, and he's been working very hard on his studies and on learning to ride. I take them out when the weather's nice and I hear from the Vestra Intelligence Network that the area's safe enough. Both of them miss you terribly. I'm hanging on, but I will admit some days are harder than others. I never got to tell you properly, but I don't hold ill will for the incident with the Late Marquis. I loved him, yes, but I still can't look past what he put Her Magesty and you through. Our union was far from smooth, but know you and your siblings were made from love, and despite what you think of him, I know your father loved you all in his own way. I know the decisions you made are for trying to make a better world. Your siblings have it in spades, when they're older I'll be more transparent with them. Such is the life of the Vestra, isn't it? I'm still in good health. I make sure to take walks and keep my ears to the ground in the markets. Nothing formally to report besides old maid gossip, but I think that'd hardly interest a young man like yourself. With the weather change my joints ache a bit, but I've made sure to do my stretches. With all the love a mother can give, Lady Vestra" In the parcel's brown paper are an assortment of handmade confectioneries with Lady Vestra's swooping penmanship on a small card with weathered stationary "For My Lady". In a sleek black box holds a golden pocketwatch, ticking quietly. There's a small portrait of his mother and siblings smiling back at him. There's also a small cake in a glass dome, the smell unmistakably his mother's baking. One she would make him when he was a boy.
Ah. Another package from Mother. With her usual keen eye for gift-giving, I see. Childhood confectioneries for us to share in now and a pocketwatch for me to carry always. A suitable choice.
Although she knows full well I consider the portrait to be evidence to conceal rather than a present expressly... I supposed I can humor her giving nature on occasion. They do appear well, at least in this artist's interpretation.
I shall have to thank the delivery boy once again for his discreet service. Not so much as a wrinkle in the parchment either. She would be proud.

I should have known you mark this passage of time more closely than I. Hopefully it is some comfort to you that you are not the only one making note of my birthday, so the celebration lives up to what you would no doubt prefer for the occasion.
There will be no finer birthday than the one where we may meet in person. Through Her Majesty and our allies, that day comes closer with each battle. Some day, you will not have to wait for Imperial presentations to meet with me from such a distance that I cannot see you as well.
You needn't worry about my diet, I assure you. I eat when I must and ensure I receive the necessary nutrients, if only because I'm eating with my peers from time to time. I trust that you will ask Lady Edelgard to verify my claims, and you know she would not lie on my behalf in these matters.
As you also know that I will rest when the war allows. Gray hairs are merely a sign of your compassion and wisdom, my darling mother, and they suit you.
Extend my condolences to my sister, both for her containment and separation from her friends. Her lessons may be a cold comfort of sorts, but I am proud to hear she has taken to them so well. I shall have to reward her with a visit in the near future. While I can't say I agree with her choice of role model, far be it from me to avoid her company. Perhaps I might sabotage your efforts slightly by arriving with a cake. I hope only that you can find it in your heart to forgive me for this egregious slight.
If his opinion is unchanged on the matter, I'm certain my brother will be glad to not share my height. Privacy and going unnoticed have always been rather important to him. I'm very grateful that you are supporting him in his studies and riding lessons, and it gives me no small amount of peace to know the area is secure before he focuses on learning.
Their absences in my life are dearly felt. Though it is beyond me to know if they are better off knowing or not knowing that particular fact. I leave it in your capable hands to decide.
It weighs heavy on my heart to hear of your struggles, but that is balanced with the honor of knowing you can confide in me. I hope you know that that will never change. Even if you were to look on the incident with my late father with disgust, I would remain a bastion for you. We do not have to agree on the former Marquis' capacity for anything resembling love in order for me to be a loyal son to you. I am grateful for your presence to guide my brother and sister to make the most of the world we will create in the ruins of tyranny. The future is theirs to claim and shape for the better with far less bloodshed.
Secrecy is an unfortunate necessity for the Vestras now, yes, but I hope it shall not be forever. That there will come a time when transparency and truth let all of you live your lives fully and in the open.
All the better that you do so in good health, as you enjoy now. You have always been so spirited that I should hardly be surprised to hear you are doing work of your own on these walks to the market. All I ask is that you exercise caution. For your sake, I would greatly prefer that you never hear anything more severe than old maid gossip.
