Spotlight Series: Best Art Galleries in NYC
Curated by Our Halstead Agents
New York City is known for its wide range of cultural diversity and history. From music to food, to art, the city is enriched with extraordinary art exhibits. The famous museums on the Upper East Side are the mainstream venues for art enthusiasts, but there are many more high-end galleries around NY that go overlooked. Whether it is emerging, established or historical, our Halstead agents gave their high-end recommendations in what is known to be a very stratified art world.
Sargent’s Daughter
179 E Broadway, Manhattan, NY 10002
Lower East Side
A spunky little art gallery on the Lower East Side, Sargent’s Daughter offers a relaxing environment specializing in portraits and contemporary artists who are working in traditional styles. Agent Ante Jakic labels the gallery as super exquisite and loves the minimalist backdrop for its diverse rotating exhibitions.
(Recommended by Ante Jakic of our Park Avenue office)
Sara Kay Gallery
4 East 2nd St, New York, NY 10003
East Village
At the crossroads of NoHo, The Bowery and The Lower East Side, set in a 19th century townhouse in the East Village, Sara Kay Gallery is known for its support of female artists and historical movements. “The gallery serves as a meeting place for critical dialogue, collaboration and community building offering events, workshops, panels as well as an annual working artist’s residency for a female artist within the space,” agent Victoria Vinokur says.
(Recommended by Victoria Vinokur of our Park Avenue office)
Pierogi Gallery
155 Suffolk St, New York, NY 10002 Lower East Side
Originally founded in 1994 in Williamsburg, Pierogi Gallery relocated to the Lower East Side in 2016 and continues to stand with the rest of the region’s cutting-edge galleries. “Pierogi features the work of emerging and mid-career artists in an eclectic range of media,” explains agent Andrea Ryder. From the conceptual drawings of Mark Lombardi to the multi-media works of Jonathan Schipper, and the dynamic large-scale paintings of Yoon Lee, to the panoramic and filmic drawings of Dawn Clements, this gallery offers award-winning artists.
(Recommended by Andrea Ryder of our Bedford Stuyvesant office)
Pioneer Works
159 Pioneer St, Red Hook, NY 11231
Brooklyn
“A small but powerful creation in Brooklyn,” agent Jared Goodloe says. This art gallery has a wide range of modern art to live demonstrations. The gallery features art for all pallets that sparks creativity and conversation. Most recent installations is for the lovers of music with an installation from Shuta Hasunuma. The best part is it is FREE of charge and has special nights like Second Sunday.
(Recommended by Jared Goodloe of our Park Slope office)
Art In FLUX
1961 Adam Clayton Powell Blvd 118th St, New York, NY 10026
Harlem
“Art In FLUX is a unique, sort of renegade arts group working in upper Manhattan showcasing uptown artists and putting art in public spaces,” explains agent Karen A. Gastiaburo. Currently, Art in FLUX has an installation of artist-designed windows on a construction site in Harlem, a couple of outdoor sculptures in Inwood Hill Park and a mural installation at 70 West 139th Street. “I love how they support artists from the community and put artwork in places where everyone can enjoy it,” Karen says.
(Recommended by Karen A. Gastiaburo of our Harlem office)
Gitler &_____
3629 Broadway, New York, NY 10031
Harlem
An ever-changing exhibit in trendy Hamilton Heights. Since the summer of 2014, Gitler & ____ has been one of the few commercial galleries in uptown Manhattan. “The small gallery regularly rotates exhibitions, showing a wide variety of art by artists from the world over—a wide range of mediums from photos to sculptures to paintings,” says agent Vivian Ducat. The Gallery also produces events, dance performances, concerts, readings, and is an organizer of various public art projects including the acclaimed Audubon Mural Project.
(Recommended by Vivian Ducat of our Harlem office)
Suknovic
Suknovic, a Tribeca studio on Franklin Street, is home to critically acclaimed artist Miljan Suknovic – who is very immersed in NYC real estate. During his time in the industry, agent Grigor Licul has gotten to know Miljan quite well. Miljan’s large scale work adorn lobbies of the World Trade Center and R. Livingston Beeckman Mansion, among others. His work is displayed on a regular rotation at most of Silverstein Properties’ building lobbies. “His home serves as a gallery space where he meets visitors and treats them to a glass of wine. It’s a very interesting and immersive experience that differs from a typical high-end gallery,” Licul explained.

Grime's Graves - Wikipedia
flint mine
Grime's Graves is a large Neolithic flint mining complex in Norfolk, England. It lies 8 km (5.0 mi) north east from Brandon, Suffolk in the East of England. It was worked between c. 2600 and c. 2300 BC, although production may have continued well into the Bronze and Iron Ages (and later) owing to the low cost of flint compared with metals. Flint was much in demand for making polished stone axes in the Neolithic period. Much later, when flint had been replaced by metal tools, flint nodules were in demand for other uses, such as for building and as strikers for muskets.
The scheduled monument[1] extends over an area of some 37 ha (91 acres) and consists of at least 433 shafts dug into the natural chalk to reach seams of flint. The largest shafts are more than 14 m (46 ft) deep and 12 m (39 ft) in diameter at the surface. It has been calculated that more than 2,000 tonnes of chalk had to be removed from the larger shafts, taking 20 men around five months, before stone of sufficient quality was reached. An upper 'topstone' and middle 'wallstone' seam of flint was dug through on the way to the deeper third 'floorstone' seam which most interested the miners. The site is managed by English Heritage and can be visited.
The site is also a biological and geological Site of Special Scientific Interest[2] and a Geological Conservation Review site.[3] It is part of the Breckland Special Area of Conservation[4] and Special Protection Area.[5]
Mining method
Tumblr media
Plan of old shaft and galleries
In order to remove the chalk efficiently, the ancient miners built wooden platforms and ladders as they dug downwards and piled the spoil around the shaft opening using turf revetments to hold it in place for the season, when the shaft and all its galleries were thoroughly and fastidiously backfilled to promote stability. The landscape around Grime's Graves has a characteristic pockmarked appearance caused by the infilled shafts. This is probably what inspired the later Anglo-Saxon inhabitants of the area to name it after their god Grim (literally the masked, or hooded one, a euphemism for Woden). Although the pagan Anglo-Saxons seem to have had some idea of what the site was, as the name of the site means literally "the masked one's quarries" (or Grim's Graben), it was not until Canon William Greenwell excavated one of the shafts in 1868–1870 that their purpose was discovered in modern times. Other similar sites have been found in Europe like Cissbury in West Sussex, Krzemionki in Poland, and Spiennes in Belgium.
The miners used picks fashioned from the antler of red deer. They probably used wooden shovels, although this is only inferred by analogy with other flint mines with better conditions for the preservation of artefacts. Analysis of the antlers (Clutton-Brock 1984: 25) has shown that the miners were mainly right-handed and favoured the left antlers out of those that were naturally shed seasonally by the deer. The 28 pits excavated up to 2008 yielded an average of 142.5 antler picks each, of which an average of 14.8 have been found to be left-handed.
Once they had reached the floorstone flint, the miners dug lateral galleries outwards from the bottom, following the flint seam. The medium-depth shafts yielded as much as 60 tons of flint nodules, which were brought to the surface and roughly worked into shape on site. The blank tools were then possibly traded elsewhere for final polishing. It is estimated that 60 tons of flint could have produced as many as 10,000 of the polished stone axes, which were the mines' main product. Extrapolation across the site suggests that Grime's Graves may have produced around 16–18,000 tonnes of flint across the 433 shafts recorded to date. However, there are large areas of the site covered by later activity which are believed to conceal many more mineshafts.
There were other hard stones used for axe manufacture, those of the Langdale axe industry and Penmaenmawr in North Wales being traded across Europe, as well as other less well-known igneous and metamorphic rocks. The axes were much in demand for forest clearance and settlement, development of farmland for arable crops and raising animals, which characterises the Neolithic period.
Customs and beliefs
Tumblr media
Neolithic flint axe, about 31 cm (12 in) long
One unproductive shaft (pit 15) appears to have been turned into a shrine. An altar of flint lumps had been built with a chalk bowl at its base and antler picks piled around. In front of the altar had been placed a Venus figurine of chalk, a chalk phallus and some balls, also of chalk. It may have been an attempt to ensure that the mine remained productive or 'fertile' after this particular shaft turned out to have little flint in it. However, it is possible that the Venus figurine and the phallus are modern fakes – there is a lack of primary evidence surrounding their recovery in 1939, and rumours circulated at the time of the excavation that they were planted in order to deceive Leslie Armstrong, the archaeologist overseeing the dig.(Piggot 1986: 190, Longworth et al. 1991: 103–105).
Neolithic infrastructure
Tumblr media
The remains of mineshafts, pits, and spoil heaps pockmark the surface of Grime's Graves
Such a large industry may have required supporting infrastructure. Assuming no more than two shafts were open at any one time, around 120 red deer may have needed to be bred and managed nearby, in order to provide a steady supply of antler as well as skin, food and other products that the miners would require. Alternatively, the mines may have been worked intermittently by local farmers, as happened in many early metal mines during the Bronze Age and the later Iron Age.
Earlier flint mines in Britain such as Cissbury in Sussex were just as important as Grime's Graves, and there were many very local sources of flint which were exploited on the downlands. However, it is probably relevant that Grime's Graves were close to the very rich soils of the Fens, and forest clearance here would rely on local products.
There was also extensive farming settlement during the Bronze Age, known from middens that infill the mouths of many Neolithic mineshafts. Animal bones from these middens show that the Bronze Age people kept cattle, which they milked, sheep and a few pigs. They also grew barley, wheat and peas.
The site today
Grime's Graves is in the care of English Heritage. It is open to the public and it is possible to descend a 9 m (30 ft) ladder and explore one of the shafts. There is a small exhibition area.[6] This is the only shaft of its kind open to the public in Britain.
Publications
The full English Heritage reports on the excavations at Grime's Graves in 1971–72[7][8] are now available online through the Archaeology Data Service. Doctor Philip Harding FSA, later to appear in the TV programme Time Team, dug the site each summer from 1972 to 1976.

Weinstein Wants Trial Moved Because of His 11,000 Page Six Mentions
[What you need to know to start the day: Get New York Today in your inbox.]
Harvey Weinstein, the once-powerful movie mogul who put Manhattan’s skyline in the Miramax logo, wants his trial on sexual assault charges moved out of New York City, arguing that the intense media scrutiny makes it impossible for jurors to give him a fair trial.
Among the arguments Mr. Weinstein’s legal team made in a court document filed on Friday was that Mr. Weinstein’s name was mentioned online by Page Six, The New York Post’s irreverent gossip column, more than 11,000 times.
The court papers that seek a change of venue also contend that Times Square billboards and newsstands on every corner mean city residents cannot avoid headlines related to Mr. Weinstein, and that Manhattan is the epicenter of global hashtag-driven movements like #MeToo.
“New York City is the least-likely place on earth where Mr. Weinstein could receive a fair trial,” wrote Arthur L. Aidala, a lawyer for Mr. Weinstein.
A spokesman for the Manhattan district attorney’s office said that it would respond in writing to the court motion, which was filed with the Appellate Division, First Judicial Department.
It is not at all clear that Mr. Weinstein, 67, has a better reputation elsewhere in the state.
Mr. Weinstein’s celebrity connections and business dealings were already tabloid and trade fodder well before October 2017, when The New York Times and The New Yorker revealed the sexual harassment and abuse allegations against him.
Those articles generated worldwide news coverage about Mr. Weinstein, fueling a national debate and contributing to a reckoning about workplace harassment and sexual assault, which is now inextricably linked to his name.
The accusations, many from high-profile actresses, ignited the conversation that vaulted “me, too” from a two-word phrase to a political movement and led to a flood of allegations about sexual misconduct that brought down many other powerful men.
In his motion, Mr. Aidala acknowledged that the attention surrounding Mr. Weinstein’s case — which he called “an unprecedented amount of negative publicity” — expanded well beyond the five boroughs.
“It is difficult to conceive of a similar case in recent memory that has generated more inflammatory press coverage,” he wrote.
But he suggested that because New York City was the center of the media world, holding Mr. Weinstein’s trial there would create a spectacle that would coerce prospective jurors to follow the court of public opinion.
It would be impossible, he wrote, “for Mr. Weinstein to obtain a fair and impartial jury that could come to court every day past newsstands, and the throngs of activists, celebrities and journalists” without being swayed.
Motions to change a trial’s venue are common in high-profile criminal cases that generate a swirl of coverage. Defense attorneys generally see an onslaught of media coverage as an obstacle to picking an impartial jury.
“If the publicity is heavily tilted against you in a particular jurisdiction, there’s a concern that you just can’t find those jurors or that it’s basically impossible,” said Daniel S. Medwed, a professor at the Northeastern University School of Law.
But judges in these cases typically must balance concerns over finding a neutral jury with a well-established legal precedent that cases should be tried where the crimes took place.
Daniel Richman, a former prosecutor who teaches at Columbia Law School, said that judges, who have wide leeway in deciding these motions, have been reluctant to change the venue of trials. “The defense generally faces a real uphill battle,” he said.
In Mr. Weinstein’s case in particular, Mr. Richman and Mr. Medwed said it might be difficult for lawyers to show that news coverage had been more prejudicial in New York than elsewhere, given how much national attention the case has received.
They pointed to the trial of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was sentenced to death in 2015 for his role in the Boston Marathon bombing. Mr. Tsarnaev’s lawyers had asked for his trial to be moved from eastern Massachusetts, arguing among other things that media coverage would influence would-be jurors. Judges ultimately denied the request.
In the motion in Mr. Weinstein’s case, Mr. Aidala described an “unending and ever-expanding deluge of local, national and international news, press coverage and online social media hysteria.”
He described New York City as “ground zero” for all of it, as well as for a political movement that he said disproportionately affected the views of Democrats in the city when it came to harassment issues.
The motion repeatedly mentioned Page Six, which Mr. Aidala called a fixture of local news and accused of “constant, biased and sensational reporting.” The New York Post declined to comment.
As an alternative to a Manhattan court, Mr. Aidala’s motion proposed moving the trial to Suffolk County, the easternmost county in Long Island, which is within New York City’s media reach, but has more conservative politics. Another option, he wrote, would be Albany County, a longtime Democratic bastion about 150 miles north of New York City.
Mr. Weinstein’s trial is currently scheduled to begin Sept. 9 in State Supreme Court in Manhattan. He has been indicted on charges of rape, criminal sexual act and predatory sexual assault stemming from the accusations of two women.

The built environment is in a precarious position. The global building stock is projected to double by 2050, adding extra pressure to national, city-level and even business decarbonisation goals.
Currently, less than 1% of the global building stock is considered net-zero. In contrast, The World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) has called on the built environment sector to set ambitious targets that eliminate carbon emissions for building portfolios by 2030, in order to meet the targets of the Paris Agreement.
Amidst a favourable policy background, the rise of innovation and cost-saving potential of energy-efficient operations, companies are scanning the horizon for technological solutions that could help save energy, reduce emissions and generate long-term costs savings for their building stock. Here, edie covers some of the most promising.
Housing heat pumps
The UK’s climate progress to date has been strong, but there are notable areas of concern as to the speed of decarbonisation in the built environment, heat and transport. This week, housing association Flagship Group and Kensa Contracting introduced a solution across two of these areas.
A cul-de-sac in Suffolk will house a host of renewable energy innovations, as insisted by the Department of International Trade (DIT). In total, 12 properties have had old night storage heaters replaced with ground source heat pumps wired to a private electrical supply.
The heat pumps upgrade low-temperature heat from the ground via boreholes so that no heat is lost through a pipe network. Benefits of the system include renewable heat, improved efficiency and no harmful particulate emissions. The companies claim the system will provide low-cost, low-carbon heat for the next 100 years and will come online at the end of October.
Satellite data planning
Energy efficiency projects for buildings are like snowflakes, no two are alike. For optimal performance from a solar array, for example, south-facing roofs are optimal. Other technologies also require specialist observations to guarantee energy efficiency and economic savings. It can be a time-consuming process, but a new satellite technology could drastically speed up the process.
E.ON is working with the European Space Agency (ESA) and Earth observation specialist Astrosat to capture satellite imaging data that will accurately identify areas and buildings across the UK where energy efficiency measures will have the biggest impact. It will use near-real-time and archived data from a range of optical and thermal-infrared satellites to map heat and air quality.
Software will then be used to assess housing conditions, insulation and traffic management. It is envisioned that the platform will provide local authorities of a street-level view of where improvements can be made. A UK pilot will be ready towards the end of 2019.
Starbuck’s green roof
Earlier this month, Starbucks committed to designing, building and operating 10,000 “Greener Stores” globally by 2025. Strides are already being taken in the UK, after the coffee retailer recently announced that a new drive-through store at Willow Tree Lane Retail Park in Yeading, West London, had achieved LEED certification.
The coffee shop is fitted with a plethora of built-in sustainability features, including a “living” green roof packed with plants, a zone-controlled heat pump and energy-efficient LED lighting. As well as conserving energy through insulation, the green roof helps increase biodiversity around the store, reduces noise pollution inside the building, and captures carbon.
There are also several electric vehicle (EV) chargepoints in the car park of the store, which is built entirely from locally sourced materials. Starbucks also insists that all waste material generated through the construction of the store was diverted from landfill and sent for recycling.
The house that waste built
The plastics problem has created a new-found focus on resource efficiency and led to a boon in demand for second-life goods. Once such example is on show in Brighton, where a “waste” house made with end-of-life toothbrushes, floppy discs and DVD cases has been ranked among the most innovative sustainable buildings in the world by design consultancy Mind’s Eye Design.
The house, constructed four years ago, is located on the University of Brighton campus in Sussex and was the first in the UK to be made entirely out of material destined for landfill. Designed by architect Duncan Baker-Brown, materials used in the construction process include two tonnes of denim jeans, 2,000 floppy discs and 2,000 used carpet tiles.
The structure, which is used by the University’s students as a study hub, has a frame made from waste timber collected from local building sites, recycling centres and outlets like Freegle. Plywood ‘cassettes’ containing waste materials have been slotted into the walls of the wooden structure for insulation, and the building also benefits from a rooftop solar array and heat recovery system.
Solar window cells
Last week, the UK Government committed more than £36m on new technology that will enable building materials to generate, store and release clean energy, with a focus on materials that can replace a building’s conventional structure. It’s a fledgling market, but Swedish construction firm Skanska has moved to champion a new approach to building foundations that can source solar.
The company has teamed with Polish tech firm Saule Technologies to trial semi-transparent perovskite solar cells that can be used in commercial construction and placed directly into a building’s façade. Skanska will trial the cells at its office buildings in Poland.
Saule Technologies has been developing the cells, which can be placed on windows, since 2014 and uses inkjet technology to create and place the cells over the external cladding of a building. Skanska hopes the trials will create a step change in creating low-carbon office environments, although details on energy costs and carbon savings are yet to be detailed.
Air-filtering fashion stores
Oxford Street is one of the most polluted roads in London, largely due to nitrogen dioxide from diesel fumes. Luxury fashion brand Stella McCartney’s new London store is located in the area, and has utilised new technology to improve the local air quality.
The new store, which opened this summer on Bond Street, boasts air-filtration technology which claims to remove 95% of traffic fumes and residual airborne pollutants. It is the first time that the filter system, designed by Danish firm Airlabs, has been installed in any building.
Stella McCartney joins The Body Shop in trialling Airlabs technology in London. The Body Shop fitted technology at three bus stop sites in order to improve the air quality. It’s a timely reminder that green technologies should target other emissions reductions as well as carbon.
