When Jaal gets a message from SAM, it becomes apparent that Ryder hasn't been doing well despite their recent victory at the Battle of Meridian. Turns out Alec Ryder left Ryder with secrets that have been tearing her a part.

New Year's fic recs (2021-2022)

It’s about time I put the curations part of my tumblr to work on the fanfics side of things, so here goes: A selection of my favourite fics (with turians) I read in the last half year or so.

Yes I am fashionably late, I was going to post this before new year...

The Primarch's Advisor by hardinginhightown

M, oneshot (9k words), Adrien Victus/Castis Vakarian

A rarepair you didn't know you needed in your life (why have one turian dilf in a fic if you can have two). Hard hitting and packed full of emotion, but also exploring a lot of backstory between them and their sons.

NoisyNoiverns' Kryterius collection

G, 13 oneshots and shortfics, Kryterius

A set of 13 Kryterius fics, mostly set in a no-reaper AU, spanning their long lives. Everything from light hearted joking about to the sweetest of fluff. I would particularly highlight “When the Lights Go Down”, also highly recommend checking out their Desolas/Abrudas pieces.

Aptly tagged: “Read for free therapy.” A collection of snapshots told through Garrus’ eyes, from the soft to the sharp realities of the war. Fantastically written, intimate and personal.

Loyalty Mission: The Coldest of Hearts by Orionis

T, shortfic (38k words), Shakarian

Set in ME1, early on when they are first working together, this one won’t punch you in the gut with a few truckloads of emotion, though it is a very interesting study of Garrus’ character and Shepards struggles with him (and the rest of her crew).

Same Song, Different Verse by suddenlycomics

T, WIP (12k words), Femsep Garrus and Tali

An exciting AU where Shepard never joins the Alliance, Garrus is a Spectre, and they meet Tali on Earth.

The Softer It Falls by BronzeAgeLove

T, shortfic (10k words), Lorik Qui'in/Lilihierax

Complete with lovely illustrations by heavenlyeros. Gentle, slow, and introspective. Really wonderfully written all around, a gem of an introduction to a(nother) rarepair you didn't know you needed in your life.

A first contact AU fic where Shepard and a certain lost Turian fall in love, comes with plenty of seriousness, silliness, shenanigans, and some smut to top it off.

Another First Contact story, this time in a Reincarnation AU. “The captain and lone survivor of that crew is Shepard, though her name is not Shepard yet. And the lone Turian, piloting the ramshackle dinghy that finds her ship, is Garrus.”

T, oneshot (1.5k words), Saren and Desolas

This piece still floors me every time, Saren being this soft just stops my heart mid beat, honestly it's something I've lately felt more and more need to indulge myself in. It's so slow but hits like a fully loaded train, all the emotion is expertly hidden just under the surface. Probably one of the best pieces of writing I've had the pleasure of reading, period.

I mean, there is a specific cruel humor between the Mexican persons influced by shows from USA and the horrible social issues here in Mexico. Kinda as “get used to horrible an gross situations“ with a mix of “political criticism in the way of being fun of authorities figures.“

You can get that feeling from these animated shorts created by Youtube creator NEGAS.

I know abusive boss is a universal trope, but there is these little details that are so unique of Mexican cruel humor. I am not sure how explain it. Kinda as a feeling.

When I watched Invader Zim just three years ago, I had the same feeling, I am aware that Vazquez growth in USA, but this feeling is very familiar to me.

Are you asking how a character being asexual could come up in a story? Like it could easily be the way a character sees their friends and their relationships and feel like they weird they don't want that. Or just the fact a friend keeps trying to set them up and they don't want that and have to say "I don't want this" like it can totally come up in a way that makes sense.

Fic Rec with Unique AU / Premise: suddenlycomics work Same Song, Different Verse.

An AU where Shepard never joined the Alliance and comes across Spectre Vakarian on her park ranger route in the Yukon!

Summary: When Council Spectre Garrus Vakarian goes to Earth to meet his Quarian informant for his investigation into Saren, things quickly go awry when he’s shot down over the Canadian wilderness. Just as things start to seem like a lost cause, he’s found by a human guide named Shepard. With Shepard’s help, he just might be able to rescue his informant and bring Saren to justice.

Even in a world where Shepard never joined the Alliance and Garrus became a Spectre, paths are still meant to intertwine as the universe hurtles towards the arrival of the Reapers.

Even ignoring the negative context of Secret Empire, there needs to be an examination of what kind of characters the story needs, and what kind of story the character needs.

Does Secret Empire need Wanda as a character in it? Does Wanda as a character need Secret Empire to develop her character or just add another story to the character’s reading list? I think the answer to both of those questions is “no.”

Like I know a future solicitation has Thor (Odinson), Wanda, and Vision together as “Unworthy, Unstable, and Untrustworthy” but that just raises further questions and criticisms.

There were universes where Astarion met his druid in Baldur’s Gate before the Nautiloid ship plucked them both from Baldur’s Gate.

Most are not happy tales; Destined to end in tragedy under the cruel machinations of Cazador Szaar.

This is the story of the one time, it goes right.

(Alternate meeting between Astarion and Obsidian (Tav) as they meet in Baldur’s Gate before the events of the game and keep being brought back together.)

This fic was started by turning over the idea of what it might look like if Astarion and my Tav met before the beginning of the game. To which a lot of those scenarios were pretty realistically bleak as the game later reinforces. So this became more of an exercise of what would be the situation where it goes well.

Fic is complete and should be updated daily so long as editing cooperates.

Vetra is the best. Her writing is just fantastic

Sheryl Chee writes the best female characters. The difference in quality in the women she writes (Vetra, Suvi, Sigrun, Wynne, Leliana, Isabela, Velana) vs the men (Blackwall, Oghren) is hilarious.
