thirteen is incredibly aware of how her actions are perceived and incredibly unaware of how her identity is perceived. like. that’s the Point of her meeting the fugitive doctor. that she can stand next to herself and not know herself. but she knows her own actions. the real recognition of herself in fugitive isn’t when she unearths the tardis or when fugitive calls herself the doctor. its when fugitive hands someone a loaded gun that will backfire and kill them only if they shoot at her first. because that’s what thirteen would do. you know?

IDENTITY ISSUES GIRL!!!!!!!#and its like this hyperawareness of what she Does rather than what she Is plays into the timeless child thing too.#because she doesn’t break out of the matrix by. i mean she has an ‘im the doctor’ moment. its Not an ‘im the timeless child’ moment.#which feels pointed! and makes when she faces the master later and claims that Yeah This Was Good For Her Actually. the kageyama parents don't seem super involved in their sons' lives, especially when it comes to psychic stuff, so like. that moment at the end of season one where ritsu unbends the spoons with his powers. do you think that was when their parents figured out ritsu was also psychic

#idk it's just funny to me to think about #they probably spent years thinking only one of their kids was psychic bc mob had powers since he was really young #and ritsu never showed any sign of that #and then suddenly. age thirteen. surprise! your other kid also has psychic powers #they must have been like goddammit. so THAT'S what happened to all our utensils #I'm also thinking about that one omake where the brothers insist that psychic powers are different from magic #if I think about them too hard I get upset about their parents #but like. they are also kinda funny bc of how clueless they are

something that i wish thirteen's era had covered more fully are the sheer weirdnesses in this body she regenerated into. why did she regenerate with brown hair that was already half-dyed blonde? how did she have ear piercings as part of a fresh new body? in what world does it make sense for her newly regenerated body to have cleanly shaven legs? thirteen has all these little feminine things going the second she appears, and it's never noticed within the show. and while i guess the masculine-presenting doctors also had little weirdnesses (Ten freshly regenerated with hair gel already applied), it feels more noticeable when the alien doctor falls in so hard with the very specific beauty trends of twenty-first century earth, in every element.

idk i just think having a female doctor could have been room for such growth, but these unspoken little markers that require work and choice being shown as innate and present the minute the doctor appears female strikes me as...i dunno, like guys who think women only look right if they're wearing makeup? like the female-presentation shtick women go through is in any way natural. the thirteenth doctor often seems surprised to be labeled a woman, and yet she's wearing eyeliner. who put that on?

#i feel like i'm not discussing this as clearly as i like...and i don't want to offend anyone or imply that eyeliner is only a woman's thing #eyeliner/ear piercings/etc. but it stands out to me that the only time we see the doctor lean into them heavily is when she's suddenly in #a female body? i feel like chibs' assumptions show up a little hard there #im just. sad that my mad little alien suddenly subscribes to modern earth beauty standards the second she appears #which i guess the masc doctors did too! but because masculine beauty standards are more in line w being natural theyre less noticeable #someone help me. something something feminism #doctor who #thirteen #thirteenth doctor #dw analysis #(kind of. mostly just. uhh. wondering why the doctor has to be pretty)

watching adventure time as a teenager really is

#its so hard to articulate this but like. the amount of actual growing you do as a teenager is so hard to see until youre past it #and like. i can see it in the show now that im a little older too #because he grows up a little too and he doesnt even see it until he tries acting the way he did when he was twelve and thirteen again #and the difference between thirteen and fifteen doesnt seem like much im sure but it is gosh it is.#because suddenly its just so awkward and unnatural. you arent that person anymore and your relationships arent the same either #sighs. adventure time is so silly it is also about growing up #and everything changing;;; and impermanence #i really like that one fucked up lemongrab episode where finns like 'yeah ill just take my shot with pb again :)'#and it doesnt work! because she's older and so much more mature and now that he's a little older he's actually able to see that #these are such low level observations but also i have not watched this show in forever and its making me wanna cry

#i see homestuck art and the kids look either like older teens or ten year olds #the human psyche is simply incapable of imagining young teenagers #tbh i'm kinda convinced all the cultures that said you reached adulthood around fourteen were on to something #like it's around that age that most people transition suddenly from baby face to adult face #an eleven year old is almost always a child a fourteen year old is almost always a very new adult but between gets blurry #and to be clear this is an artificial boundary because it's based entirely on a perceptual distinction being made between children and adul #that sorts faces into child or adult and cannot deal with interliars #but it's an entirely salient one to what seems like most human cultures #....wait a goddamn second that's just the beginning of puberty #i'm fucking stupid #but my original point stands no one knows what a thirteen year old looks like

I'm only a few episodes into jodie whittaker era (my first time), but thirteen has a lightness to her that's reminding me of nine and, not gonna lie, I'm tearing up a bit. and I'll be really interested to see if the comparison holds when the stakes get more personal.

#doctor who #it's a really weird transition from twelve who I was Not a great fan of and who felt pretty casually dark a lot of the time #nine (imo) was dark inside this very deliberate and consistent kindness and lightness and I'm looking to see if that's what's going on here #though I'm unsure yet if thirteen is lighter (and tbh politer) or if that's my own biases. withholding judgement for now.#also an interesting transition from twelve-era: I'm getting the feeling we're back to a different style of space worldbuilding with this #which I'm very interested in even if the decision to establish that there are white supremacists in the far future is..........#really not my favourite.
