oh there's so much there... he's the worst parts of the best addicts i ever knew. No matter what choices you make to emphasize any given area, the sorry cop and art cop stuff really shines for characterizing this wildly messy macho soak even if you refuse to further any of those options. The way each of the skills speaks being so florid even when it's like, halflight telling you to start biting people-- that's a big draw. The assemblage of hobbies and interests which trickle into his memory throughout the game cement him as the kind of guy i'd meet at a huge extended family event and talk to to the exclusion of everything else going on just to experience it. His backstory as a gym teacher is hilarious and he definitely has the complexes which i see working in schools and bumping elbows with gym teachers. AND OF COURSE... he's a fucking great detective!! Despite it all his ability to tease information out of people is written in such a great way where it feels like magic to watch and play through, but it doesn't feel unearned or like it's too easy to get people to spill everything. Being so nakedly everything that you are and below any kind of social artifice is a great strategy for getting people to admit things to you, but the game also writes "getting a hunch about someone hiding something" in a very believable way that establishes a particular empathy in Harry that's more than just "he's a mind reader," which is such a common route.

truly some people have no genre savviness whatsoever. A girl came back from the dead the other day and fresh out of the grave she laughed and laughed and lay down on the grass nearby to watch the sky, dirt still under her nails. I asked her if she’s sad about anything and she asked me why she should be. I asked her if she’s perhaps worried she’s a shadow of who she used to be and she said that if she is a shadow she is a joyous one, and anyway whoever she was she is her, now, and that’s enough. I inquired about revenge, about unfinished business, about what had filled her with the incessant need to claw her way out from beneath but she just said she’s here to live. I told her about ghosts, about zombies, tried to explain to her how her options lie between horror and tragedy but she just said if those are the stories meant for her then she’ll make another one. I said “isn’t it terribly lonely how in your triumph over death nobody was here to greet you?” and she just looked at me funny and said “what do you mean? The whole world was here, waiting”.
