y’all, my justified roots are showing, because i could not disagree more with some of the tomshiv takes

my justie ass over here, being like, true love is knowing *exactly* where to hurt another person. true love is not just a wild swing but scalpel-like delivery with the words you’re hurting someone with

no one in succession has hurt each other so precisely. logan can hit his kids or call them unserious but he doesn’t know them well enough to get them deeper. he hurt because of who he is and not for what he’s saying

but tom and shiv laid it all bare on the table and each blow was further proof: “i know you. i know you because i love you. no one on this planet could hurt you like im hurting you now because you never let anyone know you like i do.”

all of you are saying tomshiv stocks are down, but to me tomshiv stocks are up. no one knows tom or shiv like they know each other. no one on this show knows anyone else like they know each other. everyone on this show lashes out and swings wildly and hurts everyone else, but not like this. not with such deftness and care to only say things that hurt

shiv once said that caroline will leave you bleeding before you’d know she’s got you, but even this is impersonal. because caroline does this with everyone, it is no longer special.

but tom and shiv saved barbs just for each other. that’s love. whatever fear they may have had-- they can, at the very least, no longer fear that they aren’t being seen. they saw each other in the deepest possible way and proved it. and that’s not something any character has with any other character. this is tomshiv endgame to me.

i love tom. i don’t think i’ll ever not love tom as a character. he’s just so tragic and pathetic, but it’s not in the way the roys are. it’s just--i don’t even know how to describe it. it’s like when you laugh at a kid for being oblivious, but they’re a kid aren't they? how the fuck are they supposed to know anything? it is not their fault they are young and clueless. 

 the difference between tom and most characters in this show is that he knows what real love is supposed to feel like. tom grew up loved, he has a mother and when he praises her shiv looks repulsed. he isn’t aware of how broken a family can get until he meets his wife’s maker. logan is demented and monstrous and cruel, but his children sit at his feet regardless. they have their mouths open in hopes some of their father’s love with trickle down and hit the back of their throats. love doesn’t taste the same if it doesn’t come from their father, so they refuse to accept it from anyone else. this is the family tom is thrown into. and it must be odd for him to navigate his way through these convoluted familial dynamics when the love he grew up was patient and unselfish. love wasn’t a prize for him, it wasn’t a bargaining chip, it was simply just love. 

the biggest reason as to why tom is not taken seriously within the show is because he is not a roy. he is not as cunning as them, he is not as tortured as them, he does not possess pieces of logan within himself. he is considered an outsider and a fool because he is trying to speak the wretched language of the roys and failing. he is oblivious and stomping around in the dark and the roys are laughing at him. how was he supposed to know that in order to be respected, he needed to rip out the parts of himself that made him human? it is not tom’s fault he doesn’t understand how to operate within the confines of this brackish family. it is not tom’s fault he wasn’t born a roy.

It's so interesting to me that Logan died completely stranded from everything. He died alone. Everyone he truly cared and *should* matter was physically and emotionally away, and even us as the Public wasn't there. We didn't see the signs, we didn't see it happen, we *weren't* there either. He was alone, in every sense.
