…ngl the Ilana & Rick dynamic was more interesting before they fucked
#creature commandos#rick flag sr#simu’s two cents#dc#listen. listen. ik u can chalk that pairing up to old men getting their power fantasy of the pretty young woman liking them#but LISTEN. the entire relationship was ilana initiating it. and maybe u could argue that’s part of the fantasy#but that reads as more…emasculating imo#rick flag sr said no like 5 times the first time she tried to make a move on him and ultimately backed off#then the second time ilana made a move on him he said no again before she kissed him. and then ultimately he was shown to be into it.#BUT LISTEN TO ME#i think theyre going to do smth interesting with ilana#she was described as a ‘disney princess femme fatale’#i think she’s manipulating rick flag sr to do smth. to what end? who knows#anyway i do like rick flag sr a lot from what i’ve seen of him so far tho so i might be biased#ugh he’s just weirdly honest and endearing idk. i like his mannerisms.#anyway i stand by my statement that it was more interesting when he was saying no while the princess kept making moves#u could’ve had some interesting subversion/parallel to the bride and victor and that weird grooming thing#except with more of a power dynamic rather than an incestuous grooming one?#when ilana said she’s to be the queen and she gets what she wants? hmmmmm#depending on how the rest of the series goes i might write a little drabble exploring what could’ve happened if rick flag sr kept saying no#yk. depending on how much thematic mileage that gets me.

We’re not meant to be, but my heart refuses to listen
Max already found his soulmate, and is in a committed relationship with her. But why is his heart defying fate and pulling him back into George’s orbit?
- A Soulmate AU (GAX)
-fluff, slight angst, happy ending, canon divergent, rated Teen and up
Part I
(Read Part II next) (OR read on ao3)
Tumblr media
Max’s eyes drift over to George’s wrist, an intricately inked tree without any leaves peeking out through the long sleeves of his suit. They’re in another post-race press meeting, joined by Oscar, Carlos and Pierre. He’s mostly zoning out, which is easy to do when the reporters finally decide to take pity on him and ask the other racers questions for a change. He fiddles with his own left sleeve, skin cold under his fingertips as he runs them over it. It feels numb, the dark outline of a rose on his skin. It didn’t used to feel that way, once.
It’s not as mortifying as the first few times were, when George catches him staring. It’s both disarming and electrifying when that camera ready smile of George’s softens into something more genuine—reserved—as if Max and him are currently sharing a secret only they’re privy too.
Max can feel the automatic, almost desperate, way his own mouth pulls into a matching grin. And the resulting fit of giggles between them attracts the attention of the other racers and reporters.
It’s easy enough to dodge the question of what’s making the two laugh like a pair of schoolchildren when Pierre butts in with a joke, and it gives George the opportunity to lean in closer to Max, mics distant enough to not pick up the almost airy whisper of George’s voice as he asks, “What were you staring at my hands for, mate?”
Max stiffens at first before quickly relaxing when he registers the teasing undertones to George’s question. He deliberates it, thinks the logical thing to do would be to make an excuse or a quip, make them both laugh at the ordeal. But the curiosity has been gnawing at Max’s psyche long enough that he can’t help the way the question rolls off his tongue, relieved in their freedom.
“Did you find your soulmate yet?”
George seems to freeze at his question, the playful grin on his face tightening. Max immediately feels guilty for asking such a prying question. They’re friends, but they’re not quite close enough to delve into these topics. Questions about each other’s personal lives always stayed on the surface level, never breaching family.
Max might have just crossed a line in their already fragile, somewhat undefined relationship. They’re friends in a broader sense. They never hang out alone together, they barely text each other outside of the usual fire emoji react on each others’ instagram stories and obligatory congratulatory messages. But then there’s also this…tension, Max thinks, that’s always surrounding the air between them. A spark crackling down Max’s spine when they meet eyes across the room or accidentally brush shoulders. The heat of George’s body branding his skin whenever they pat each other’s shoulders in friendly conversations.
There’s that numbness where his own soulmate mark lies, a permanent reminder of Max’s failure to be normal, to be less selfish.
George evokes in him a thrill he’s only gotten before on the podium, above everyone else. The champion of the fucking world.
“I did,” George says, stretching the word out. The emphasis there feels past-tense—as if there’s a but there.
Max wants to press the matter, but knows not to. Only shrugs. “Cool.”
George’s face relaxes, the corners of his eyes softening before he leans in close enough that his breath scorches the shell of Max’s ear. “Didn’t quite work out, though.”
Max holds down the shiver from wracking his body outwardly, but he can feel the goosebumps rising on his flesh.
This knowledge shouldn’t excite him. He’s with his own soulmate, for fuck’s sake.
When George pulls back, corners of his eyes crinkling, Max knows for certain by the battering of his heart that he’s fucked.
Fate already gave him everything he could possibly want. But Max hungers for more.
Trying my hand at a trope i’ve been wanting to write for a long time, and what better ship than Gax! My first foray into writing for f1 rpf so i am very very nervous lol i’m still pretty new to the fandom. Feedback is very very appreciated, i’d love to know your opinions on this if you managed to stumble upon this drabble! I do plan on this having a part two, and potentially more depending on how many it takes to finish the story. Hopefully not too long lol. Hope you enjoyed <33

man. the most persistently irritating thing about daniel emond's "kill the whale" is how fucking GOOD it is at times.
every day I think about The Quarterdeck and how phenomenally it portrays that scene and the magnetism of agreeing to Ahab's quest even despite fear, and Dusk and the subplot of Starbuck falling in love with Ahab and being terrified of what that means, but ESPECIALLY Fedallah's introduction song where Fedallah is presented as a woman with agency, who looks the audience in the face and dares us to judge her for the life she has chosen.
Fedallah is presented as the captain's lover, the captain's party trick and pleasure, and owns the shitshow she lives in, and only chooses to reject that life once she tires of Ahab's fetishization and exotification of her, and then uses the very thing Ahab fetishizes so much (her prophecies) as a way to spell her own doom and drag Ahab down with her, freeing herself. The shivers I still feel when I hear Fedallah's triumphant crow of "come back here" as she sinks below the waves and Ahab watches in horror, knowing she is next.
that fucking ruled to a degree that shook me!!!!!!!!! and hearing Grace McLean and Amber Gray (and Danielle McKnight) duke it the fuck out through song was just genuinely magnificent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and then the narrative kicks you right in the throat by calling queequeg "q" for two hours straight and making his marriage to ishmael lowkey racist hate sex
#moby dick#kill the whale#daniel emond#daniel if u see this i do genuinely think you have such a fantastic musical brewing here i am being so serious#u 100% have my ticket if this ever goes live#but i am also on my hands and knees begging you to talk to a pasifika person about this for like one hour minimum Please#norman sann is incredible and deserves to be a huge part of this show do not get me wrong#but you need to figure out what you're doing with q because bro. if you join the long line of ppl denying pasifika rep in moby dick#notably the book with a protag love interest Who Is Pasifika#you will be FUMBLING an otherwise Incredible bag. holy shit.#(also as a personal note please make fedallah textually zoroastrian please gbdjfhdjfndj)#ok thats all#<- tags that might sound insane but this guy regularly looks himself up on line and has found ME specifically THRICE across dif. medias#so the chance of him seeing this is nonzero so. just covering my bases#anyways#mossy speaks#god fedallah in this show makes me INSANE 'you will not summon me and you can tell yourself your own bedtime stories' had me SCREAMING#it takes a LOT to get me to root against ahab#ESPECIALLY hot lady ahab?????? with the fuckinfkfnf. grace mcleans presence and her lowkey strip tease???? like dude i was so cooked#i got distracted. talking abt fedallah. anyways. dude the way she rallies against ahab is genuinely so subversive and brilliant#like THAT is good shit. why was the whole musical not this good. auaugrhrhhrhrhdhhhgjgjkgn#mobydick adaptations r so consistently bad to mid but with specific things that change your entire life sprinkled in and leave me like 🧍🧍#(not counting hayashida's album. that is genuinely flawless. no notes. 100% stand by it)#but this adaptation comes the closest to touching greatness. i just 😭i need it to be Better in the parts where its lacking. bc it has-#SO MUCH POTENTIAL. and the CAST????? AUGHGHHHHHBFJ. god. every one of them is divine#anyways yap session over im normal. ivr been thinking abt this for days but im normal now

Sometimes I just look at Isabeau and just know that if isat came out and I got into it when I was like 16 he would be my favorite character and I would've gone absolutely buck wild over this man and feel like he was laser targeting me. But alas Odile has a grip of steel on me rn due to her virtue of being a middle aged woman
#rat rambles#stars posting#I feel like the biggest change in my taste in characters as the years have gone by is Im now far more biased towards old ppl lol#although tbf I was also the one person in 2016 who actually liked asgore so maybe Ive always liked parhetic old ppl#but yeah the reason isa is past me bait is because hes an exploration and subversion of the sort of tropes I Hated as a kid#and I still dont like them so isa still appeals to me its just not as much as he would have to a younger me#I do genuinely love all the party very dearly tho theyre all soooo good#I think my favorite part of isabeau is how like. of everyone we get to see the least facets of him but like in a very good way#this is a man who hides and bottles shit hes so fun to rotate#his self image is so carefully controlled compared to everyone else which makes him an incredibly interesting character to analyze#and I love that despite him seeming like the most emotionally stable person here on the surface he still clearly has like. hashtag issues.#like he's in that beautiful zone where its so so fun imagining what it would look like to truly break him#<- normal things that normal ppl say. like me.#I may have my very light beef with alt looping aus as a concept but hes probably the most interesting alternate looper to me#also my light beef exclusively relates to king quest stuff which is why Im a big fan of duo looper aus with sif#but honestly. isa might be the only one that I genuinely think works better as a solo looper even with taking king quest into account#although bonnie comes close. I <3 looper bonnie I <3 seeing fictional children go through the horrors#I think theres a lot of fun to be had with any alt looper au tho I just am a huge king quest fan so I like it when my favorite elements of#it dont have to be handwaved#but yeah the real question is how would younger me feel about mirabelle#because on the one hand: acearo character#but on the other hand: I have always been a little hater abt romance so idk if younger me would rly be able to follow her character well#I wasnt exactly good at character analysis back then lol#except for the instances in which I was but I dont have that sort of faith in my younger self#yknow Im thinking abt my history of favorite characters now and I think me being one of few 2016 alphys enjoyers might have been a prophecy#she was my quote unquote third favorite but in reality she was second#I think she chara and peridot su teamed up to define my taste in fictional characters for the next several years#and somehow that lead to olivia becoming one of my favorite fictional characters of all time#I say somehow as if that isnt a very natural conclusion

If you are confused watching 'The Tyrant' on 'Disney Plus' - it's a mini show based on the same universe / time line as 'The Witch' part 1 & 2.
Hope season 2 gets picked up and they make it at least 8 episodes. Or maybe make a movie.
If you like 'The Witch', you'll enjoy this

I came to a realization listening to the NPC dialogues from Bloodborne. Since we don't have Patches playing his usual role in this game, the Skeptical Man in Oedon Chapel takes over his role of warning us about some of the NPCs. But the key difference is that Patches, despite his smarmy cynicism, is a genuinely good judge of character--every time he tells us not to trust someone, he's right. And most of the characters he accuses are people in positions of power, notably Lautrec the knight who murders the poor imprisoned Fire Keeper, and Petrus the lying cleric who leaves three of his cohort to die. You can argue that in Petrus's case, it's just his bias against clerics talking, but given what almost all of the clerics in Dark Souls preach and who to, it's hard to hold that disdain against him.
But in Bloodborne, the Skeptical Man can never look past his own deep mistrust for everyone around him (again, hard to blame him in a place like Yharnam), and he ends up with the exact wrong read on everyone who accompanies us to Oedon Chapel. Not only that, but everyone he accuses is just as powerless as him: a traumatized old woman, a sex worker minding her own business, and a disabled man who truly wants to help people. The only one he doesn't accuse is Adella, a nun of the Healing Church, which certainly indicates who he's willing to give the benefit of the doubt and who he isn't. And there's also the way he frames himself--while Patches knows that he's a scoundrel, but there are far worse scoundrels than him out in the world, the Skeptical Man clearly thinks of himself as a good and honest man who can see past everyone else's deceit. He's not just wrong, he has to be self-righteous about it.

what i like about ada's report, & i'll get into it more eventually, is that despite it being ada explaining the plot (& her motivations) to you directly, it presents an interesting relationship between ada, a known liar & manipulator, & the audience. while she withholds information from other characters & skirts about on mystery throughout RE4 & separate ways, there is one person to whom she doesn't lie, to whom she does tell the truth, at least a part of it, & that is you, the player. it is a very neat narrative device that wouldn't work as well in a different medium
#* file // : OOC — ( 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐓𝐄𝐑'𝐒 𝐂𝐑𝐔𝐒𝐀𝐃𝐄 . )#not that anyone's actually fucking read ada's report people still think ada was saving leon out of love#in direct opposition to wesker's orders in the original re4#i wish this didn't make me mad but it does it's right there in plain english the nikita pose is a misdirection#it's subverting the trope she's part of a bigger conspiracy leon is a necessary piece of her mission#like the subversion of the femme fatale isn't subtle#they either die or are undone upon reveal of their treachery ada survives & lives beyond the logical endpoint of her character#she isn't weakened or completely changed in fact she learns how to manipulate the hero better for their next encounter#she isn't working for the villain both in that she tells you that she's only been pretending to this whole time#& that she works for another organization that's been spying on wesker through ada this whole time#but also the fact that wesker is neither the villain of re4 nor resident evil as a franchise he is another cog in the machine#just another one of umbrella's leftovers#see i know people think ada despises chris because he mistook her for carla one time on the tanker#but i think they've got a lot more in common than either is truly willing to admit should they actually ever speak to each other#i just think it's neat that she gets his line addressed to wesker to use on mr. x (just another one of umbrella's failed experiments)#darkside chronicles & re5 were developed around the same time i'm sure it's a coincidence

what is it that drives people to create the most gorgeous and elaborate art of anime muppets. i want to dissect an osomatsu-san fan's brain but that would involve me actually having to smoke cigarrettes (watch the damn anime) and probably develop lung cancer (enjoy it)
same sauce as my little pony:friendship is magic getting popular
#(it's the good characterization and subversion of expectations)#ik u probably sent this for a joke answer but that's my sincere theory#the medium/genre (gag anime/kids cartoon) makes people let their guards down#and then the genuinely good and effective character writing gets them in the gut while theyre open#i read this great essay about what makes the mane 6 from mlp so appealing and basically it's abt the Gap#rainbkw dash is cool and confident but secretly loves reading#fluttershy is meek but is capable of being fierce and loud#these kinds of wrinkles and depth as simple as they sound is the sauce#karamatsu is the Cool One but he's bullied endlessly and cries easily#ichi is the Dark and Evil one but he's actuakly very sensitive#it's the same sauce... it's the unexpected depth#also the voice actors just do a great job bringing the characters to life#one musnt ever estimate the power of a great VA performance#also the built-in dynamics#theyre all brothers so that setup automatically begs some questions#'how do the older ones interact w the younger ones'#'hiw do the brothers closest in the birth lineup interact'#having these kinds of relationship dynamics baked into ur group is immediately intriguing#also they are easy to draw. that part musnt be underestimated either#simple and effective character design that lets ppl go crazy#like how people go insane w kirby fanart bc he's so simple#but like honestly it's not that much deeper than 'the character writing is genuinely really good'#ask

Victor and Elizabeth, The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein (art by Nanfe1789): As a child, he didn’t want to be separated from Elizabeth even for school, and he didn’t react well to Henry kissing her. As an adult, he’s much worse, orchestrating Justine’s death not only for his experiments but because he was jealous of Elizabeth's love for her.

Susannah: Yes. Yes, he did risk himself. We all did. A lot of it... OK, a bit half-assed but at least... some of it will stick! You have to try. It's not going to work any more, running for the same old burrows... we're rafting off into space - God! Frank sees it. He said to me one day, 'Suse... you know what's going to do for us all? Not the failure of intellect, moral, muscle - but the failure of imagination! They're all too busy with their snouts in the trough to smell the fire.'
Crystal: Yeah, he says some really daft things.

Pam Gems, Loving Women (1984)
#100plays#pam gems#loving women#modern drama#theatre quotes#1984#Gems was known best for her adaptations of older works and for her biographical plays (including the phenomenally successful Piaf in 1978)#but she consistently produced original work too‚ tho with less commercial success. this comes from her middle period and is often described#as a comedy about a love triangle; which it is‚ really‚ but that somehow feels like a dismissive way to describe a play that can just as#often raise challenging questions about the nature of activism and social change‚ the complicated way that personal relationships and#polemical discourse can influence one another‚ and the inadequacy of passion alone (both in love and in politics) without a solid#foundation. neatly split into three sections at different points in the characters' lives‚ the first and third might more easily be#described as romantic comedy; the majority of the second scene‚ however‚ is a vicious argument between idealists at odds (or a#revolutionary and a lapsed revolutionary‚ maybe). our three characters are Frank‚ an activist social worker who has recently (at the#beginning of the play) suffered a nervous breakdown‚ his radical coworker and lover Susanne‚ and Crystal‚ the working class hairdresser who#has agreed to nurse Frank in return for a roof over her head. the first scene sets up the love triangle and suggests the disharmony to come#but it is the second scene‚ one year later (and with Frank having left Susanne for Crystal‚ apparently without even breaking up face to#face) (Susannah! sorry not sure why i keep writing Susanne); anyway this is the standout scene‚ a furious showdown between the newly#domesticated Frank and the woman he spurned. there is personal enmity on Susannah's part of course‚ as well as entirely reasonable#frustration at how Frank handled the affair‚ but the argument quickly becomes centred on issues of political dogma‚ his perceived betrayal#of 'the cause' (as well as her) and what he perceives as her naivety and tunnel vision in approaching the work they once shared#it is a shamelessly intellectual segment‚ full of angry‚ verbose tirades on the state of the nation and the futility or necessity of#radical action and subversive agitation‚ sparkling dialogue that demands to be spat with venom (and contrasted completely by a much gentler#meeting between the 2 characters a decade later in the final scene). part of Gem's beauty‚ tho‚ is that she never entirely loses the humour#of the piece‚ allowing for amusing asides like the one above (Crystal enters and leaves several times throughout the argument‚ clearly#uncomfortable with the situation). on the surface it might seem like Crystal is a mildly patronising character‚ unable to keep up with the#idealogical slant of the conversation‚ but as Frank makes clear‚ in many ways she's the most real of the three of them; not having the#privileged middle class background of the others‚ her seeming disinterest in revolution is borne of necessity‚ the necessity of first#staying alive (ie. feeding herself‚ finding a roof to sleep under‚ etc) leaving her little time to engage in the largely theoretical#grandstanding of the two socialists she's fallen in with.
