Five young media artists were awarded the 2022 prize for their show ‘Groundless’ inspired by ‘Kafayi yemek’, the motto of this year’s festival. “The Idiom Principle” (John Sinclair 1991) takes one step back and presents an abstract viewpoint. Subtei often allows itself a little break away from the festival topic… Fundamentally it’s about the use and processing of language in chunks. Prefabricated word combinations are economic and easier to remember and they are firmly embedded in our metaphorical repertoire, but often they present a challenge for native speakers and learners alike. Whether a preset of words can be understood idiomatically or literally -single or open choice- is up to individual interpretation.
