what is their favorite genre of music?
✧˚ ༘ ⋆。  ‪🔪 ♥︎ ⟶ misc. small detail ask meme | accepting !
what is their favorite genre of music ?
as much as she can appreciate the occasional heavy metal / rock , she much prefers soft rock , pop rock , and electro - pop . . among others . i am not the best at specifying musical genres , since music can be differentiated into many , many subcategories . the best i can do for this headcanon is provide examples and additional reasoning !
she likes these 50's / 60's ballads because she is a sucker for the romantic essence of them . she can deeply relate to the lyrics , and it's the type of music she plays in the background while she's relaxing in the bath with a glass of red wine , reading a tragic romance novel or just pondering over her own love story and ultimately , the true love she desires for herself .
i'm a fool to want you - billie holiday
i'm in the mood for love - julie london
bang , bang ( my baby shot me down ) - nancy sinatra
blue moon - julie london
these songs are more 80's - 90's ( so more contemporary to her , so to speak ) but she likes these songs as well .
two of hearts - stacey q
call me - blondie
lovefool - the cardigans
eternal flame - the bangles
heartbreaker - pat benatar
crazy - kidneythieves
it must have been love - roxette

I've been finally getting into rebetiko so I was wondering if you could give me some recs? M' aeroplana Kai Vaporia is my fav song and gives me chills, and so does To Minore Tis Avgis from the softer ones. And could you point me towards info for its history & culture? Due to my personal circumstances the Smyrna aspects in particular is something I want to reconnect with. Note I'm Greek so I don't need English info I I'm just writing in english for accessibility in case people are interested
REBETIKOOO ah my favourite genre!!! (along with entechno) I am gonna add English info if you don’t mind.
Μ’αεροπλάνα και βαπόρια (With planes and ships) is one of my favourite songs too! Perhaps you already know this but fun fact: Savvopoulos was dreaming for a long time to write a proper rebetiko. So when he got Sotiria Bellou to sing his song he could hardly contain himself. When Bellou got out of the studio after she had finished recording the song, she told him “I ripped your “pops” and “rocks” apart”. After that, Savvopoulos never attempted to write rebetiko again. Now, to be fair, the song IS rebetiko but with an obvious entechno and soft rock flair :)
Since you like Bellou, here are other great classics from her:
Μη μου ξαναφύγεις πια (Don’t leave me no more)
Συννεφιασμένη Κυριακή (Cloudy Sunday)
Δε λες κουβέντα (You don’t say a word) (this is actually laiko bordering on soft rebetiko)
Tumblr media
And since you also like Το μινόρε της αυγής some songs of Markos Vamvakaris, the dad of rebetiko (he was the one who made it mainstream and exculpated it):
Φραγκοσυριανή (Lady from Syros)
Τα ματόκλαδα σου λάμπουν (Your eyelashes are shining) For a less heavy approach, it is also great by Giannis Poulopoulos.
Τα ζηλιάρικα σου μάτια (Your jealous eyes)
Tumblr media
And now a short history of Rebétiko.
Rebetiko is a music genre that first appeared in the late 19th Century and at the first three decades of the 20th Century it had reached the familiar sound we know today. It flourished amongst the Greeks of Asia Minor, mostly the low and working class. When the population exchange between Greece and Turkey took place in 1922, the 1,5 million Greek refugees who arrived at Greece brought many things, including rebetiko. In the beginning, the rapid influx of over a million people made the Greek citizens basically hostile towards them. The Greek refugees were severely marginalized and they survived and flourished in the underground scene. Rebetiko was considered provocative, shocking as, besides love, it often also addressed the struggles and little joys of marginalized people (poverty, prison, drugs, prostitution, life in the streets in general etc). Rebetiko was censored by the regime of Metaxas in 1936. In 1940, during the Nazi Occupation, rebetiko became a resistance genre against the Nazis and that helped it find wide acceptance amongst all Greeks by the early 50s. Since then, rebetiko has become an “untouchable” of Greek (and not only) genres and even Mikis Theodorakis (arguably the best or runner-up Greek composer of all time) once said: “We (the composers) are all just branches of a tree and that tree is Markos Vamvakaris” (the aforementioned dad). Rebetiko music is now part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Aaaand some more recs!
1) Some very old
Τα παιδιά της γειτονιάς σου (The kids of your neighborhood) Actually folk Minor Asian of the late 19th century that was rebetised around the 20s. The version I linked is recent cos I love it)
Μισιρλού (Misirlu - Egyptian girl) Song from 1927. The main theme of Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction is a cover of this song. Black Eyed Peas also did a cover.
2) Some hardcore ones, like the Hashish songs (yep that’s an actual subcategory of rebetiko)
Ένας μάγκας στο Βοτανικό (A man of the streets at Votanikos) Sung entirely in a made up street slang Greek dialect.
Το πιτσιρικάκι (The kiddo)
Έμαθα πως είσαι μάγκας (I heard you are a street man)
Στην υπόγα (At the basement) I love the original 30′s version. The melody written and performed by Kostas Bezos was then remastered by him and led to the super famous ---->
Παξιμαδοκλέφτρα (Rusk thief) The dude who made the video for this song is my idol. I wonder what people who don’t speak Greek make of it lmao
Η προσευχή του μάγκα (The street man’s prayer)
3) And some more mainstream:
Βρέχει στη φτωχογειτονιά (It’s raining over the slum)
Με παρέσυρε το ρέμα (The river took me)
Απόψε στις ακρογιαλιές (Tonight at the beach)
Ακρογιαλιές δειλινά (Beaches and sunsets) I’m linking the Imam Baildi version.
Είμαστε αλάνια (We are street kids (?) )
Που ‘σαι Θανάση; (Where are you Thanasis?) Okay I am cheating a bit here because this is a laiko song but I INSIST it has a rebetiko flair also I am obsessing over it today
4) Instrumental
Τα ωραία του Τσιτσάνη (Tsitsanis’ nice tunes) Basically Vasilis Tsitsanis killing it.
Ζεϊμπέκικο της Ευδοκίας (A zeibekiko for Evdokia) Our unofficial national anthem shouldn’t be missing from this list. Fun fact: This was to be a full song. When Manos Loizos (the very famous composer) gave the melody to Lefteris Papadopoulos (very famous lyricist) refused to write any lyrics because he was sure this would destroy the song. And of course he was right.
youtube
5) Last BUT NOT LEAST, everything written by Stavros Xarchakos for the movie Rebetiko.
I give you my three favourites. But, like, I recommend all the movie basically.
Καίγομαι, καίγομαι (I am burning, I am burning)
youtube
Στου Θωμά το μαγαζί (At Thomas’ shop)
youtube
And for last, I saved the song that freezes my blood, sung by the man himself. Flirts heavily with entechno genre. This was Xarchakos’ only appearance on the silver screen.
Το πρακτορείο (The bus station)
youtube
I think I covered you well XD but in general Markos Vamvakaris and Vasilis Tsitsanis  wrote many masterpieces for rebetiko you can find. Xarchakos did too in this movie (but he generally composed more laiko and entechno). You can find a lot of good stuff.  Happy listening!
P.S I was double checking whether Βρέχει φωτιά στη στράτα μου is laiko or rebetiko (I’m stupid I know) and this is the genre Google gave me for Stratos Dionysiou:
Tumblr media
As we speak, Dionysiou is rolling in his grave. I’ve never seen a disgrace like this before XD

Sorry to interrupt you but can you explain why do you think taeyong's kibbe type is dramatic?
taeyong’s kibbe analysis: a dramatic type profile
first impression is everything with kibbe, so let’s take a look. what instantly strikes you is how you can draw this guy with a ruler: everything stark, everything sharp.
Tumblr media
this looks just way too mature for any other kibbe category already. so many pointy, irregular, long, thin angles. to me, except the extreme height, he has all dramatic characteristics and no tinge of yin in him. not a single curved line to be seen. look at that arm and how taut his cheek profile is. the nose can cut like a razor.
Tumblr media
to confirm that. taeyong also looks best in D stylings rather than say gamine. it feels too chaotic or childlike on him, the outfit overshadows the person, it looks like a different world:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
or classic — too understated on him, too symmetrical, bland, makes him disappear, doesn’t underline his features well:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
whereas the same outfit idea looks much sexier and sassier on an actual (flamboyant) gamine who carries it effortlessly:
Tumblr media
and an actual (soft) classic, which is a type that shines in the most conservative of clothes:
Tumblr media
for taeyong, it needs a head to toe color kind of futuristic concept. suddenly his face is where you look at and the bigger picture works out.
Tumblr media
the more geometric and bold with black and white contrasts, the better. keeping it minimal so we see him the most. he really pops out in kick it because it’s a dramatic styling.
Tumblr media
when you wear your kibbe category, the outfit no longer overpowers or is more important than you. you see taeyong, not the fashion choice. you can get a good idea of him and the shapes and size bring out all the sex appeal. i find him the most impressive here:
Tumblr media
any element that is contrary to his type has the opposite effect. fluffy hair, small accessories, wild color layering, bulky lines, no geometric shapes, youthful wardrobe: suddenly he’s completely gone, almost unrecognizable and even appears a lot older.
Tumblr media
put some grandpa glasses, wild and terribly dyed hair, plus a random jacket on a gamine, it plays into their look entirely. what’s a bad outfit on one type is attractive on another, it’s funny.
Tumblr media
so, you can see why pure dramatic brings out his very best. that’s a type that can handle a lot of dressing up. it’s also the reason why he can rock the subcategory. taeyong in soft dramatic, he looks dazzling with all the drapes and ornaments and jewelry overload. oh man, look at him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
a little different and the hair doesn’t fit completely but also very interesting and memorable on him, this soft dramatic jacket is the bomb:
Tumblr media
natural stylings, sort of decent, can be too large though, especially sportswear jackets. but you can tell there’s some major yang going on by how he can wear a completely monochrome look and not make it boring. it also feels like he has the height to pull it off even if taeyong is not the tallest when you compare him with others. but in and of itself, the vertical line is there.
Tumblr media
regardless, it has to be crisp and fitted. dramatic makeup is the best on taeyong. sharp dark brows and smoky eyes, very harsh lighting, shadows all around him. add metallic jewelry... perfect.
Tumblr media
the hair is best when it’s all sleek and pulled back. put him in a funky gamine multicolor crop mane and it looks like a wig he got from 2013 sehun 😂
Tumblr media
seriously, these stylists. the fluffed up cotton candy colors need to go back to where they belong which is on the sweet gamines. where it looks surprisingly sexy, if not seductive. when baekhyun said girl i’m your candy, he didn’t lie.
Tumblr media
gd (flamboyant gamine poster boy) has done all of these colors times ten and manages to look handsome and pretty edgy, even in the weirdest cuts and colors.
Tumblr media
same for hyuna (soft gamine), looks pretty cool right here. no other type can do ice cream galaxy hair.
Tumblr media
because: it’s in their gamine geometry and they have some yin (= soft, wishy-washy outlines). button nose, squishy cheeks, pouty lips, moon face. completely different story. you can fluff the hair up to maximum effect and it looks really good.
Tumblr media
the same idea looks strange and frizzy on taeyong, he doesn’t look like himself anymore.
Tumblr media
you can see how it makes his face look even sharper. compare it to yoongi, hair like that only picks up on the roundness that’s already there. with taeyong, it creates a contrast. that’s your sign.
Tumblr media
it needs a much more severe and hypermodern outfit. with large square shapes, hard contrasts and only 2-3 dominant colors. that’s how you know taeyong is pretty much pure yang. most other types need some kind of line blend. meanwhile, taeyong shines in the absence of yin. this one has a bit of natural sprinkled in but looks on point because it’s so geometric:
Tumblr media
as the finale — easily my favorite outfit here, lots of dramatic elements: only one color (no gradients either), stiff hair and fabric, a huge lapel, asymmetry with the flower emblem and waist ties, strong eyebrows, eye shadow, sharp shoulders, straight sleeves, V-neck. amazing.
Tumblr media
so, i rest my case — we have a dramatic on our hands 👆

level 1 TracyJackson 3 points · 5 hours ago I've got the impression that, while Rips was more in the power pop/punk rock vein, It's Real draws from more influences pre-punk: classic rock, even some psychedelia. What's your stance on the often perceived antagonism between these genres? How do they / don't they connect? And while we're at it, I always love hearing about musician's favorite records, so what are some of your all-time faves in these genres - and if there's something close to your heart that doesn't fit within these categories, also beyond?
Anyway, thanks for one of the few current takes on rock'n'roll I truly enjoy!
Reply Share Report Save
level 2 EXHEXBAND Ex Hex 4 points · 4 hours ago Wow that's a tough one! well, we really do pull inspiration and influence from all of the above mentioned genres. The antagonism between them is not really something we pay attention to-we just are drawn to sounds we like. I love how these subcategories inform each other and continue to morph and merge and split through different artists. I guess thats pretty psychedelic! -LH

level 2 EXHEXBAND Ex Hex 3 points · 4 hours ago The Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land in America in North East. It has replicas of the catacombs in Rome among other cool stuff. Parrots, Parrots, Parrots, just Parrots in Falls Church, VA for a parrot fix. -LH

level 1 mistertrick66 2 points · 4 hours ago Hey everybody, long time fan, my first ever club show was 8/8/02 when Mary, Erase Errata (Anxious Rats 4 Life) opened for Sonic Youth at the 930 Club, and was curious for you all what are your favorite DC club show memories either you played in or witnessed, whether it be the 930, Black Cat, R'nR Hotel or else where.
Love to you all, Patrick
RIP Skip Groff

level 2 EXHEXBAND Ex Hex 1 point · 4 hours ago there are so many. We're loyal to DC so we love 9:30 and Clack Cat. but as far as other towns...there are too many to mention. off hand pretty much any club that has a really good sound system and is pretty comfortable to be in? it's pretty amazing how many venues have crappy sound systems/ or just aren't set up well acoustically

level 1 ATLjarcher 1 point · 4 hours ago MT just want to say thank you for devoting your life to this. I'm sure it seems a lot of the time like you're talking to a wall or something, and the pay sucks. It has to be very difficult to keep doing this, working crummy jobs in-between projects and scrambling to pay bills. But please keep at it. You're a very inventive musician.

level 1 AnDeluzion 2 points · 4 hours ago I know this isn't a question, I just wanted it to be known how much I love Ex Hex, and honestly the entire Mary Timony musical catalog. She was nice enough to take a picture with me once, and every once and a while I see it and it just makes me so happy. Also Betsy chatted with me once about Roy Orbison and Silverchair. I have so many lovely memories and I just wanted to say thanks :)

level 1 AnDeluzion 2 points · 3 hours ago Does anyone in the band like Bon Jovi? Or is that too cheesy? I grew up with parents who listened to 80's rock and that band's production value always stuck out to me for some reason. Which may be more the producers/engineer's than the band

level 1 AnDeluzion 1 point · 3 hours ago Help settle a debate please: Does listening to music, as an adult, that you liked growing up inherently nostalgia? In my opinion, there's a fine line between liking something because it reminds you have a prior time/place, vs your tastes just having not changed at all over the years.
