My Re:Zero/Madoka Magica crossover AU
I've had the idea for this AU in my head for over a week now, so I decided to type it all out
Either takes place after arc 2 or arc 4 of Re: Zero (personally leaning towards arc 4 because that way there are more established characters and Subaru has gone through a bit more character development)
At the beginning of one of Homura’s time loops, Homura, Madoka, Sayaka, Mami, Kyoko, a few copies of Kyuubey, and several witches all get iskeaied into Lugunica.
Sayaka and Madoka aren’t magical girls yet, so as far as they’re concerned, they’re in an isekai story, not a magical girl one. But for some reason they can’t find the person who summoned them, and they don’t have any overpowered abilities either, what’s up with that?
Though I have the idea that eventually, rather than becoming magical girls, Madoka and Sayaka learn use lugunican magic and/or spirit arts, and as it turns out Madoka has a large amount of magical potential. At this point, Sayaka becomes convinced that Madoka is the protagonist of their isekai adventure and could not be happier to help support her best friend. Madoka, meanwhile really just wants to go home because she’s sure her parents are really worried about her at this point.
Mami also wants to go home. Not that there’s anyone who would miss her, but without her, there is no around to protect Mitakihara from witches. However, Mami is also has a tendency to want to help those in need, so she ends up saving people from some bandits, and then she fights some mabeasts, and one thing leads to another and suddenly she’s become a local hero. Once she finds out that witches have been brought into this world as well, any goals of trying to get home have been thoroughly deprioritized.
Kyouko is less concerned about going home (she doesn’t have anyone waiting for her either), so she’s completely fine with starting life again in this new world. And as much as she won’t admit it, she is still a good person too, so she ends up accidentally turning into a local hero as well. (although her heroics are less stopping bandits and mabeasts and more robbing corrupt nobles and merchants. She probably becomes a wanted criminal)
Homura is freaking out, because rather than waking up in a hospital bed like every other loop, she wakes up in a forest she doesn’t recognize. Did her power do this? Did a witch do this? Most importantly, how is she supposed to find Madoka?
On a funnier note, because she’s stuck in a fantasy world, Homura has no way to aquire guns, bombs or missiles like she does in canon. Instead she probably steals an entire castle’s armoury and/or learns how to make guns herself out of pure spite.
My personal ruling is that Homura and Subaru’s powers just don’t work on each other, which is very concerning for both of them.
From Subaru’s perspective, everything just freezes for times ranging for a few seconds to several minutes. Nothing noticeably bad happens, but that's almost worse because it means that means something bad could be happening elsewhere and he's powerless to stop it.
From Homura’s perspective, time just rewinds at seemingly arbitrary points (which is more evidence to support her theory that her powers have started to malfunction after looping too many times)
Witches getting iskeaied to Lugunica is a bad thing. Because while there are people with the power to defeat them, magical girls are the only ones with a established method of detecting them, and not being affected by the witch’s curse. The increased number of deaths and disappearances across Lugunica probably hastens this AU’s version of arc 3/arc 5, with the royal candidates being called together to discuss how to deal with the issue. Also pmmm witches are definitely not getting called "witches" by lugunicans, due do the phrase "with" being associated with something different. People don't really know what the
I like the idea of each of the main girls ending up with one of the different camps. In my mind, Mami ends up with the Felt camp, Kyoko ends up with the Priscilla camp, and Sayaka and Madoka end up in either the Anastasia or Crusch camps (or maybe get spit up and end up and one.) However I don’t have any specific interactions planned for any of these characters yet, so who ends up meeting who isn’t set in stone yet.
“Arc 1” of this AU would be the magical girls getting isekaied. For Subaru’s half, a witch attack’s Roswaal’s manor, forcing Subaru to loop several times trying to figure out what this thing even is, and then how to defeat it. “Arc 2” would be a variation of either Arc 3 of 5 of Re:Zero, but with the inclusion of magical girls and witches. Beyond that, I don’t have a clear idea of where the story would go, but I know I want it to go somewhere.
Whenever they do meet (which despite being one of the key parts of this AU, I haven't actually worked out yet) the dynamic that Subaru and Homura will be interesting. I think Subaru would initially want to be friends with Homura, but would become unnerved by her detached way of dealing with everything. (mostly because he worries that she is what he will be like after using Return By Death too many times).
Homura, on the other hand, wouldn’t want to be friends with Subaru. But once she figures out his ability, she would realize that Subaru dying could erase any progress she makes in keeping Madoka safe, so she reluctantly appoints herself as his protector. Also she won’t admit it to him, but she’s definitely jealous of the fact that he has been able to overcome the various problems this world has thrown at him, and that the point that he gets to loop from updates, and that he gets to keep the emotional connections he makes makes rather then being forced to start form nothing (some would say… from zero) every single time.
Madoka and Emillia should be friends. I don’t have any deep thoughts on this. I just think they would get along.
In at least one loop, one of the young girls of the Re:Zero cast like Petra, Meili, or Felt becomes a magical girl, and things go horribly wrong.
Walpurgisnacht also got isekaied, but she got isekaied to Vollachia or somewhere else far off where she won’t be relevant for a while. She's a problem for later.
Also, I like the idea of magical girls from the spinoff manga like Oriko and Kirika getting isekaied as well, but I don’t have any specific plans for what they would be doing in this AU yet.

It's been a hot minute since I've rambled a life update and there's too much so I haven't bothered since becoming more active again. I will note that I grew tired of pharmacy and stumbled across a full-time marketing and office management position for my community's local visitor bureau and since it is full-time, I made the decision to leave the library. It was very hard and I will forever dream of returning to a library, but knowing how much our city has been struggling with budget cuts and that the library has cut hours and a position due to this, I know I wouldn't have gotten those full-time hours and I made the right decision. I've been at my new job for just over two years now. My boss is very easy-going and 90% of the time the job isn't very demanding. We do host a big community event that I primarily manage and we have an annual banquet to recognize businesses and organizations in the community that make us a place people want to visit. Otherwise, it's very low-key and I am very fortunate with my job.
I bought a Subaru Outback in the fall of 2021 and in the spring of 2022 I bought a rooftop tent and have been enjoying camping with my family in the national forest as I always have in addition to going to county and state parks on solo adventures. I've been slowly ticking off state parks with the hope to visit all as well as working my way segment by segment along the National Scenic Ice Age Trail. This past summer I camped on Madeline Island and kayaked those sea caves before taking a boat tour from La Point out to Devil's Island sea caves and rock formations. It has been amazing getting to explore my beloved home state and empowering to do these as solo adventures.
Now, I have an immediate and specific update after filling y'all in. I'm pretty sure my boss, who was in and out sick for over a month, passed COVID on to me right before Christmas. I hadn't had COVID yet and it just figured I would test positive the day before Christmas Eve. To make my holidays even MORE memorable, my terrible teeth finally had had enough and gifted me with a painful infection for New Years. It's fine COVID and dental pain/infection, not like I wanted to participate in a day one hike like I did last year. 🙄😅

My first crush, Hallie Mills.
In third grade I was dorky. Spending my time overturning rocks and hopping in creeks. I never had an affinity for team based sports no matter how my parents marketed them to me.
At the start of the year I was happy to have my best friend, Stephen Highmore, in the same class as me.
He was the sporty one of the two of us, playing tee-ball, soccer, and most importantly, Stephen was the fastest kid in the grade.
Stephen’s house was surrounded by forest and became the destination for almost all of our adventures. Stephen was an only child with a divorced mother who was always at work. He lived in a nicely sized house along with his grandparents who, after retiring from their position of lawyer and professor, spent their days sitting in the study reading old law books. Every few weeks Stephen’s eccentric artist of an uncle would take up residence in his basement studio and hole away working on meaningless projects. Given that Stephen’s father moved to Vermont after the divorce he was not around at all.
As you can see, Stephen’s house was a kingdom of no supervision.
One summer Stephen discovered his uncle’s hidden studio-stash of illicit items. Being the unruly boys we so often were, the stash of contraband became our main source of entertainment for years to come. Ignoring the cartons of cigarettes, oddly scented vase, and half finished bottles of various liquors, we found the most usefulness in the colorful array of lighters. After strategically stealing two of the Bic lighters, we would fill our pockets with action figures and walk into the woods in Stephen's backyard. For hours we would watch the plastic figures burn into nothing more than a bulbous puddle of carcinogens.
Still I wonder what has had more effect on my health between the cowboy killer cigarettes I smoke or the black stringy plastic smoke I inhaled throughout the years of our friendship.
Stephen’s mother, Heather, was a lovely caring woman. she would never hesitate in giving me a ride to my dreaded sports practices or letting me spend the night at their house. On special occasions Heather would load Stephen and I into her Subaru Outback that was coated in dog hair. We would drive to a diner to meet her “friend”, who later Heather revealed, through a post on facebook, was her partner. Our drive would continue deep into New Jersey to a farm she worked at. Stephen and I would spend our days as any boys with few rules would, catching frogs, subjecting ant hills to nuclear levels of devastation, and playing with the horse whips we would sneak from the barn. My days during this time were care free and simple. No concepts of money, the future, or women clouded my innocent view of the world.
Of course, this all changed when Hallie Mills was put into Stephen and my 3rd grade class. Hallie was a pigtailed, olive skinned, athletic girl who’s hand worked on a spring mechanism when the teacher asked questions in class. It was love at first sight, or, the equivalent for a third grader who still assumed babies were left for families on doorsteps. Without the faintest idea of how to garner the attention of this sweet girl I had heart eyes for, I relied on the age old technique of throwing wood chips and running away. The results were lackluster to say the least.
One icy winter Saturday after Stephen and I had been sledding on the hill in his front yard, Stephen taught me a secret of the world which firmly embedded itself into my developing brain, pornography. Still damp from melted snow with rosy wind burned cheeks, Stephen took me into his mothers office and signed himself in as a guest on her desktop.
“Wanna see something?”
The proposition was seemingly normal, but the feverish grin that took over his face told a more devient tale.
Sitting shoulder to shoulder and hip to hip on Heather Highmore’s office chair we explored the filth that hid in plain sight on the internet.
‘MILF takes HUGE cock’
‘Interracial BLOWJOB’
‘ANAL ADVENTURE’
‘Amature GANGBANG’
In an attempt to seem cool I acted as though these titles were old news to me. To Stephen, I had a long history with internet porn. In reality, my perception of women and brain chemistry changed forever at this exact moment, for the worse. As we watched in silent awe my mouth watered and blood pressure hit critical rates.
As soon as I started feeling the new sensation of tightness in my underpants, Heather came home.
Stephen then taught me another vitally important lesson in 5 quick steps…
how to clear a computer’s search history.
In an attempt to act normal, we donned our snow gear. Still sopping wet from our sledding expedition, we stepped into the cold, snowy, pornless wooded area behind Stephen’s house. Uncomfortable speechlessness fell onto us like a bookshelf onto the curious baby of negligent parents.
With the surrounding world dampened by the lush snow, our trudging foot steps crunched intrepidly into our eardrums.
I was picturing frames from the videos we had watched. More likely than not, Stephen was doing the same.
We walked in imaginative silence for a while until plopping ourselves down in a snowless divet in the ground, formed and sheltered by the roots of a fallen oak.
Stephen broke the silence.
“Have you ever jacked off?”
I answered the question with quizzical eyebrow movements.
Stephen continued “It’s when you watch porn and rub your… you know.” he sealed the statement with a suggestive hand wave.
“Oh. I haven’t.” I said, feeling my ears heat up to the point I thought it would bring upon an early spring.
Stephen and I were still best friends with no care in the world.
In fact, this instant of sitting quietly in the frozen dirt, our heads swimming with smut, would be the closest we had ever been and sadly the closest we would ever be.
“Don’t tell anyone, but I have a crush on Hallie Mills. Do you remember her? The girl in our class?” Stephen kept a locked gaze on his snow covered boots.
The realization of what Stephen had said hit my gut with the speed and precision of a peregrine falcon striking a pigeon out of the air. Of course I knew who she was, I was absolutely in love with her, or at least as in love with her as a third grader who just discovered sex could be.
My stomach pushed itself forcefully into the back of my throat, almost cutting off my ability to breathe, a feeling familiar to me now, jealousy.
I managed to swallow my digestive tract back into its rightful location.
I tried to say something as anger and sadness fought for their place in the forefront of my next words, both became tired and plaintive. Self-pity took the helm.
“So do I.”
The words slid off of my tongue and were seemingly frozen by the cold air, hanging motionless between my mouth and Stephen’s ears. A second passed, my words thawed, another second passed, and Stephen spoke the final nails into our friendship's coffin.
“You know she likes me right? You aren’t sporty enough for Hallie, and your haircut is stupid.”
My head spun for the next two days.
I couldn’t argue with Stephen that my haircut was stupid. I had skipped out on actual haircuts for the last couple of years, letting my brown hair grow long, only occasionally I’d have my mother’s hair stylist thin out the mass of thick hair and shorten my bangs to keep hair out of my eyes. My odd haircut routine led to something that resembled a mullet with less appeal, more awkward cowlicks, and a worse shape. My hair swallowed my neck, nearly perfectly matching the width of my shoulders giving my skinny frame the appearance of explorative plants growing from a hanging pot, my lanky legs mimicking the spindly vines searching for support. It didn't help that I almost exclusively wore very skinny jeans that were ripped at the knee.
I thought they made me look like a cool skater kid. Sadly, they only reinforced the fragile plant look as the ripped threads mimicked desperate roots in arid waterless ground.
I walked with an air of timidness as though everyone and everything was out to get me. My self esteem was nonexistent at such an early age, pushing me deeper and deeper into a shell of shelf hatred. The only reason one would consider me an ‘old soul’ or ‘ahead of my years’ would be because at only 9 years old, I had the self hate and angst of a 17 year old who just discovered the smiths.
Stephen, Hallie, and I still had class together for the remainder of the year. Stephen and I still considered one another friends, but the friendship was strained by the love triangle. We fought over Hallie endlessly. Our time hanging out was no longer filled with boyish exploration, but instead discussion of who will make the next move. Not only did Hallie definitively like Stephen back. She made it very clear, with messages passed by her friends, that she did not like me at all and found me quite unattractive.
Those whispered words from the girls have never left my ears, no matter who I become they will be with me.
Every month my teacher, Mrs. Langine, would reassign the seating arrangements in class as a way for everyone to get to know one another. Seating was announced like an NBA draft, when your name got called you would go and sit in the chair closest to where the teacher was standing. This was your new seat. The second to last switch was where my active pursuit for Hallie’s heart turned into me wallowing in puddles of dejection.
Mrs. Langine began to call out names one by one.
“Rebecca.”
She takes a step to the right, “Matt.”
Another step, “Hallie.”
My heart skipped a beat, if my name was called I would finally have a chance to get to show Hallie that I wasn’t the ugly weird kid she so vocally saw me as. My eyes were pinpoint focussed on Mrs. Langine's lips. My ears waited anticipatedly for my name to be called. In a second of over confidence, I picked up my backpack as preparation to take my rightful seat next to my love.
“Stephen.”
Mrs. Langine threw his name out there with an overly casual nature. It was as if she didn’t care at all of the destruction she caused to my naive heart.
Stephen took his seat and smirked in my direction.
My young brain flitted through emotions and phrases trying to pin down the best one to fit this exact moment. “Dang you” my brain thought, the third grade equivalent of a slur, the worst word I knew.
“Dang you.”
The school year went on.
I made other friends while ignoring the ‘relationship’ Stephen and Hallie had gotten into. I also made a huge effort to ignore their mean remarks about how skinny jeans are “for girls”, but it didn't work. I often cried to my mother about what they had said.
I was self conscious about myself to the point I wasn’t able to make a change. This is where jealousy first planted itself in my head and my inner voice picked up the habit of putting me down.
No matter how much I hated my stupid hair my inner monologue would remind me,
Getting a haircut will look even more stupid and everyone will judge you.
My skinny jeans were tattered and I despised them, but I’d be in my head,
What? Wear shorts? Then your skinny legs will be more visible, you’re a joke.
Even the thought of a girl crushing on me was shut down,
You are unwanted and weird. People are uncomfortable looking at you, let alone have a crush.
That little voice got really good at making me feel like shit, it was as if it knew exactly what I was thinking.

We got a new adventure mobile. The Subaru finally got a place in mileage that repairs were starting to be more than the vehicle was worth and they were becoming more and more common.
So with some sadness we said goodbye to my Forester and hello to a Jeep Cherokee.
Tumblr media
Were we looking for a Jeep? No. Were we looking at used? Not really. Did we think we would get this nice of a vehicle? No.
Realistically we agreed that we would have to downgrade a bit from the Forester. We wanted an AWD, SUV type vehicle that had ground clearance and enough room to fit Aayla's crate and put the cargo box on top for my gear. Our budget had us more focused on subcompact SUVs. (Smallest of the SUV category)
We were 80% sure we were going to end up with a new Subaru Crosstrek. Yet kept our minds open and hit a bunch of dealerships. Then we got shown this vehicle on the lot.
It was almost everything we wanted and at a better price point with it being used, even with an extended warranty. We didn't have to move down to too small of a vehicle and got something that will be even better for off-roading than the Subaru was.
Now it still has less cargo space than the Forester (which is the biggest in its class I think) so I have to figure out Aayla's crate. I have three options.
Tumblr media
1) In the cargo area.
Already has four toe down points that are easy to deal with. Easy access for Aayla in and out. Leaves all the rear seats up too.
But it means I don't get access to the cargo storage area under the mat or the spare without taking the crate out.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2) Fold the 2/3 section of the seats down and have the crate behind the driver. With access to both doors but have to reach over to open and close the crate.
3) Fold the 2/3 section and have it behind the driver seat. This time with a crate door facing the car door. But that would make the extra door face the driver seat. No way to let Aayla out other than the rear driver side door.
4) Fold all the seats down and have it behind the passenger and a door to the rear passenger door and the cargo area.
The last three give access to the cargo storage area and means I can poke my fingers through the holes to give Aayla some attention when driving. But the seats don't lie flat and I may have to wedge something under the crate to make it more flat.
So I don't know where to put it and secure it down. I think that there is no great option and they all have their minuses.

How to Choose a Used SUV for Honolulu’s Unique Island Roads
Tumblr media
Thinking about buying a used SUV in Honolulu? Rad! SUVs are a solid choice for cruising around Oahu. But with all the Used Car dealer how do you pick the right one for our unique island roads? Don't worry, brah, we've got some tips to help you find your perfect ride.
What to Consider When Choosing an SUV in Honolulu
Honolulu's roads can be a bit different from those on the mainland. We've got everything from narrow city streets to winding coastal highways and bumpy volcanic trails. Here's what to keep in mind:
Ground Clearance: Some roads here can be rough and uneven. A bit of extra ground clearance can help you avoid scraping the undercarriage of your SUV.
Maneuverability: Honolulu has its fair share of narrow streets and tight parking spaces. A smaller or mid-size SUV might be easier to handle than a massive one.
Four-Wheel Drive: While not essential four-wheel drive (4WD) can be super helpful for those occasional off-roading adventures or if you encounter slippery conditions.
Fuel Efficiency: Gas prices in Hawaii tend to be higher than on the mainland. A fuel-efficient SUV can save you some serious cash at the pump.
Size and Cargo Space: Think about how much space you need. Do you often haul surfboards, camping gear, or a whole bunch of passengers?

Subaru Repair: A Step-by-Step Guide to Keeping Your Subaru in Top Shape
Subaru vehicles are known for their reliability, off-road capabilities, and long lifespan. However, like all vehicles, they require regular maintenance and occasional repairs to continue running smoothly. Whether you own a Subaru Outback, Forester, or WRX, understanding how to perform basic Subaru repairs can save you time and money. This tutorial will walk you through common Subaru repair tasks, providing detailed explanations without overwhelming you.
Tumblr media
Why Regular Subaru Repair and Maintenance are Essential
Routine Subaru repair and maintenance are crucial for several reasons:
Preventative Care: Regular maintenance helps identify potential issues before they become major problems.
Cost Savings: Addressing minor issues early can save you from costly repairs down the line.
Optimized Performance: Keeping your Subaru well-maintained ensures it runs efficiently and reliably, particularly if you rely on it for off-road adventures.
Longevity: Regular care can help extend the life of your vehicle, ensuring you get the most out of your investment.
Common Subaru Repair Issues
While Subarus are known for their durability, certain repair issues tend to arise more frequently. Here’s a breakdown of the most common repair needs you may encounter with your Subaru.
1. Head Gasket Failure
Issue: Head gasket failure is one of the most common issues in Subaru models, particularly in older vehicles with the 2.5L engine. A failing head gasket can cause coolant and oil to mix, leading to overheating and engine damage.
Solution: If you notice symptoms like coolant leaks, white smoke from the exhaust, or an overheating engine, it’s time to address the head gasket. While head gasket repairs are more complex and should be handled by a professional, keeping an eye on coolant levels and ensuring the engine doesn’t overheat can help prevent serious damage.
2. Timing Belt Replacement
Issue: Subaru engines, especially those in older models, rely on a timing belt to keep the engine’s components working in sync. Over time, the timing belt can wear out, leading to poor engine performance or catastrophic engine failure if it breaks.
Solution: Subaru recommends replacing the timing belt between 90,000 and 100,000 miles. You can check your owner’s manual for specific intervals. If you’re confident in your skills, replacing the timing belt is a DIY task, but it requires patience and attention to detail. Make sure to follow the step-by-step instructions in a repair manual or video guide.
3. CV Joint and Axle Wear
Issue: Subarus are well-known for their all-wheel-drive system, which places additional stress on the CV joints and axles. Over time, these components can wear out, especially if you regularly take your Subaru off-road. Signs of wear include clicking sounds when turning or vibrations during acceleration.
Solution: If you hear clicking or notice vibrations, inspect the CV joints and axles. Replacing worn components early can prevent further damage to the drivetrain. This repair is a bit more advanced, so if you’re not comfortable tackling it yourself, seek out a professional Subaru mechanic.
4. Brake System Wear
Issue: Like all vehicles, Subaru brakes wear down over time. Frequent off-road driving or city commuting can accelerate the wear on brake pads, rotors, and calipers.
Solution: Regularly inspect your brake pads and rotors for wear. If the pads are thin or you hear squealing noises, it’s time for a brake replacement. Replacing brake pads is a relatively straightforward task that most DIYers can handle with the right tools. Just remember to follow proper safety procedures when lifting your vehicle and working on the brakes.
DIY Subaru Repair Tasks You Can Handle at Home
Many Subaru repairs can be done at home with basic tools, saving you money and ensuring your vehicle stays in top condition. Here are a few maintenance tasks you can perform yourself.
1. Changing the Oil
Regular oil changes are vital for keeping your Subaru’s engine running smoothly. Here’s how to do it:
Warm Up the Engine: Let your engine run for a few minutes to warm up the oil, making it easier to drain.
Drain the Oil: Use a wrench to remove the oil drain plug and let the oil drain into a pan.
Replace the Oil Filter: Unscrew the old oil filter and replace it with a new one.
Refill with New Oil: After reinstalling the drain plug, refill the engine with the recommended oil type and amount as specified in your owner’s manual.
2. Replacing Air Filters
A clean air filter helps improve fuel efficiency and engine performance. Here’s a quick guide:
Locate the Air Filter Housing: Open the hood and find the air filter housing, typically located near the front of the engine.
Replace the Filter: Open the housing, remove the old filter, and install the new one.
Close the Housing: Ensure the housing is securely fastened before closing the hood.
3. Replacing Spark Plugs
Worn spark plugs can cause engine misfires, reduced performance, and poor fuel economy. Replacing spark plugs is a straightforward task you can do at home:
Locate the Spark Plugs: Access the spark plugs by removing the ignition coils.
Remove and Replace: Use a spark plug socket to remove the old plugs, then install the new ones.
Reinstall the Coils: Once the new plugs are in, reinstall the ignition coils and make sure everything is secured.
When to Seek Professional Subaru Repair
While many Subaru repair tasks can be handled at home, some issues require professional expertise. Here are a few examples of when it’s best to take your vehicle to a certified Subaru mechanic:
Head Gasket Replacement: Due to the complexity of this repair, it’s best handled by a professional.
Transmission Repairs: Transmission work is intricate and requires specialized knowledge and tools.
Electrical System Issues: Diagnosing and repairing electrical problems can be challenging without the proper equipment.
Conclusion: Keep Your Subaru Running Smoothly with Regular Repair and Maintenance
Subaru vehicles are built for adventure, but they still require regular maintenance and occasional repairs to stay in peak condition. By handling simple DIY tasks like oil changes, air filter replacements, and brake maintenance, you can keep your Subaru running smoothly and prevent major issues down the road. For more complex repairs, don’t hesitate to seek out a trusted Subaru mechanic to ensure your vehicle remains safe and reliable for years to come.

With so many options available, it’s essential to know what to look for to ensure you’re getting the best value for your money. Whether you’re searching for a family-friendly vehicle or an SUV for weekend adventures, this guide will help you navigate the process and find the perfect used SUV that fits your budget.
1. Determine Your Budget 💰
Before you start browsing used SUVs in Richmond, it’s important to set a clear budget. Knowing how much you can afford will help you narrow down your options and avoid the temptation of overspending.
Consider All Costs 📋: When setting your budget, consider not just the purchase price of the SUV but also other costs such as insurance, taxes, registration, and maintenance. It’s also wise to set aside some money for potential repairs, as even well-maintained used vehicles may need some attention.
Financing Options 💳: If you plan to finance your used SUV, shop around for the best interest rates and loan terms. Many dealerships in Richmond offer financing options, but it’s also worth checking with your bank or credit union to see if they can offer a better deal. Remember to factor in your monthly payments when determining what you can afford.

2. Research the Best Used SUV Models 📚
Richmond’s used car market offers a wide variety of SUV models, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Some SUVs are known for their reliability and low maintenance costs, making them ideal for budget-conscious buyers.
Top Affordable Used SUVs 🏆:
Honda CR-V 🚙: Known for its reliability and fuel efficiency, the Honda CR-V is a popular choice among used SUV buyers. It offers a comfortable ride, ample cargo space, and a reputation for longevity, making it a great value for the price.
Toyota RAV4 🌍: Another reliable option, the Toyota RAV4 combines a smooth ride with strong safety ratings. It’s also known for its low cost of ownership, thanks to its efficient fuel consumption and minimal repair needs.
Ford Escape 🛣️: The Ford Escape offers a blend of performance and practicality, with a range of engine options and available features. It’s a versatile choice for those who want a bit more power without sacrificing affordability.
Subaru Forester 🌲: If you’re looking for an SUV with all-wheel drive, the Subaru Forester is a great option. It’s known for its ruggedness, safety features, and ability to handle various road conditions, making it ideal for Richmond’s changing seasons.
Hyundai Tucson 📦: The Hyundai Tucson is a compact SUV that offers a comfortable interior, good fuel economy, and a long list of standard features. It’s also backed by a strong warranty, which can add peace of mind when buying used.
Reliability Ratings and Reviews 🌟: Research reliability ratings and owner reviews for the SUV models you’re considering. Websites like Kelley Blue Book, Edmunds, and Consumer Reports provide valuable insights into how different models perform over time. Look for SUVs with a strong track record of reliability, as this can save you money on repairs and maintenance in the long run.
3. Inspect the Vehicle’s Condition 🔍
Once you’ve identified a few models that fit your budget, it’s time to start inspecting vehicles in person. The condition of the SUV is critical, especially when buying used, as it will impact its longevity and overall value.
Check the Exterior 🛻: Begin by inspecting the exterior of the SUV for any signs of damage, rust, or poor repair work. Look for:
Paint and Body Condition 🎨: Check for scratches, dents, and mismatched paint, which could indicate previous accidents or poor maintenance.
Tire Wear 🛞: Ensure the tires have even wear and sufficient tread depth. Uneven tire wear could signal alignment issues or suspension problems.
Lights and Glass 💡: Test all lights (headlights, brake lights, turn signals) and inspect the windows and mirrors for cracks or chips.
Examine the Interior 🛋️: The interior of the SUV should be clean, comfortable, and free of major defects. Pay attention to:
Seats and Upholstery 🪑: Check for rips, stains, or excessive wear on the seats and upholstery. Leather seats should not be cracked or heavily worn.
Dashboard and Electronics 🎛️: Test all the electronic components, including the air conditioning, infotainment system, and power windows. Make sure there are no warning lights on the dashboard.
Cargo Space 📦: Ensure there is enough cargo space to meet your needs and that the rear seats fold down easily if you require additional room.
Under the Hood 🛠️: A thorough inspection under the hood can reveal a lot about the vehicle’s mechanical condition.
Engine Condition 🔧: Look for any signs of leaks, corrosion, or excessive dirt. Check the oil level and color, as well as the condition of the belts and hoses.
Fluids 💧: Ensure that all fluids (oil, transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid) are at proper levels and appear clean. Low or dirty fluids could indicate neglect.
Battery 🔋: Check the battery terminals for corrosion and ensure the battery is securely mounted.
4. Take a Test Drive 🚗
A test drive is an essential step in evaluating a used SUV. It allows you to assess how the vehicle performs in real-world conditions and whether it meets your driving needs.
How to Test Drive an SUV 🛣️:
Start the Engine 🏁: Listen for any unusual noises when starting the engine, such as knocking or ticking sounds. The engine should start smoothly and run without excessive vibration.
Brakes and Steering 🚦: Test the brakes to ensure they respond quickly and smoothly without any grinding or squealing. Pay attention to the steering—there should be no excessive play, and the SUV should track straight without pulling to one side.
Acceleration and Handling 🛤️: Take the SUV on various types of roads, including highways and city streets. The vehicle should accelerate smoothly, handle corners confidently, and provide a comfortable ride.
Noise and Comfort 🎧: Turn off the radio during the test drive and listen for any unusual noises, such as rattles or squeaks. Also, assess the overall comfort of the ride, including seat support and visibility.
5. Review the Vehicle History Report 📝
Before finalizing your purchase, request a vehicle history report through services like Carfax or AutoCheck. This report provides valuable information about the SUV’s past, including:
Accident History 🚑: Any reported accidents, their severity, and the extent of repairs.
Ownership Records 🏡: The number of previous owners and whether the vehicle was used for personal or commercial purposes.
Maintenance Records 🛠️: A record of routine maintenance and repairs, which can give you insight into how well the vehicle was cared for.
Title Status 🚔: Ensure the SUV has a clean title with no liens or salvage records.
6. Negotiate the Price and Close the Deal 💸
Once you’ve found the right SUV and reviewed its condition and history, it’s time to negotiate the price. Use your research on market values and any issues you discovered during the inspection to negotiate a fair price.
Tips for Successful Negotiation 🤝:
Be Prepared 📚: Know the fair market value of the SUV and be ready to back up your offer with data.
Stay Calm and Polite 😊: Negotiation is a conversation, not a confrontation. Be respectful and patient.
Be Willing to Walk Away 🚶: If the seller isn’t willing to meet your price, don’t be afraid to walk away. There are plenty of other vehicles available.
Conclusion 🎯
Finding an affordable used SUV in Richmond is entirely possible with the right approach. By setting a budget, researching reliable models, thoroughly inspecting the vehicle, and negotiating wisely, you can drive away in an SUV that offers great value and reliability. With Richmond’s diverse market and competitive pricing, you’re sure to find the perfect SUV to meet your needs. 🚙✨
