[DAY OF THE OUTBREAKโ€ฆ]
sitting at your front door, tying your shoes, you can't shake the feeling that something's off. last night's sleep was weirdly quiet - no dreams, no whispers in your ear, no memories bubbling up to the surface. just a big, empty space where your subconscious usually runs wild. it's unnerving, to be honest. you're used to your mind being a bit of a battlefield, even when you're sleeping. but last night, it was like someone hit the mute button. and now you're left wondering if this is what it's like when... well, when it's all over. is it just silence? nothingness?
the thought sends a shiver down your spine. you're not sure what's more unsettling - the idea of an afterlife that's just a blank slate, or the possibility that last night was just a weird fluke. either way, you can't shake the feeling that something's shifted, and you're not sure what's coming next.
your father's footsteps broke the spell, and you refocused on tying your shoes as the TV droned on in the background. the familiar sounds of his morning routine were comforting - washing dishes, drinking tea, and making job calls. occasionally, he'd cook breakfast, a rare treat when finances allowed. you'd learned to supplement your meals with snacks from school, stashing them away for weekends.
as the news anchor spoke, a name caught your attention - "missing student from hyosan high" - and you turned to see the scientist teacher's son on screen. but before you could process the news, your father's gruff voice cut in, "what'd you do to your hair?" his question was a stark reminder of your own daily struggles. you hesitated, a sheepish shrug your only response. the salt spray you'd applied to enhance your natural texture had slipped your mind, but the 35 anxious glances in the mirror hadn't. you'd sought validation in your reflection, ensuring the subtle waves framed your face just so. "just wanted to, uh, try something different," you mumbled, the words trailing off like a hesitant confession.
your father's gaze lingered for a moment, as if searching for a hidden meaning, before he turned away, disappearing into his room. the unspoken dismissal was clear: time to head out. with a quiet sigh, you grabbed your bag and slipped out the door, leaving the uncertainty of your father's reaction behind, like a lingering whisper in the morning air.
as you locked the door, a spark of excitement ignited. you headed down the steps with enthusiasm, careful not to trip. today was a first: ditching the bus for your bike. it was a small change, but one that filled you with unexpected joy. the prospect of feeling the wind and sun on your face was exhilarating. you smiled at how something so simple had awakened a sense of adventure. your feet hit the concrete with a loud thud, and as you looked up, three imposing figures loomed before you. their black coats billowed behind them like dark wings, and their smiles seemed to hold a sinister intent. you knew exactly who they were - and your heart sank. one of them concealed a bat behind his back, and your excitement was replaced with icy fear. paralyzed, you couldn't even think of calling the police. your father's words still lingered in your mind: "if you want me to live, let them beat me." the memory of his scolding made your stomach twist with anxiety. the men simply walked past you and began to head to the door you once came from only seconds ago. with shaking hands, you hastily untied your bike and stuffed the chain into your backpack, desperate to escape the ominous scene unfolding before you.
as you entered the classroom, your gaze instinctively sought out choi namra, your deskmate and sole point of reference. the murmur of conversations momentarily subsided as you took your seat, but you stood firm, refusing to be swayed by the subtle scrutiny of your peers. today, you had made a deliberate choice to style your hair, sweeping it aside to reveal your face in a departure from your usual disheveled appearance. the tangled locks that often obscured your features were now neatly parted, with wavy bangs framing your tired eyes. just as you settled into your chair, a gentle voice pierced the air, speaking from behind namra, who was engrossed in her textbooks. onjo's warm, kind eyes met yours, accompanied by a soft smile and a subtle thumbs-up. "y/n-ah, you look great today," she said, her words catching you off guard with their sincerity. a spark of surprise ignited within you, leaving you momentarily breathless. did she just say.. great?
your eyes only blankly blinked at her words until you cleared your throat, โ€œw-what?โ€ you asked. unfortunately, the sound of a high-pitched voice had cut off onjoโ€™s next words. โ€œyah!โ€ the entire classroom was now facing a pink-cardigan-wearing nayeon who angrily stepped towards her desk. to which, he was surrounded by wujin and his friends. โ€œget off of there. you stink,โ€ she commanded to gyeongsu, who was sitting on top of her desk. your eyebrows raised at the interaction, gyeongsu hopped off the abnormally upset girl's desk. โ€œoh, okay. my bad,โ€ he spoke with a slight confusion in her tone. he proceeds to wipe off any excess โ€˜stinkโ€™ that he might have left, nayeon raises her voice once again at this. โ€œcut it out! you're so dirty,โ€ she shouts in disgust while moving her backpack away from him. to say that nayeon was privileged was an understatement, but you knew that already. โ€œwhat the hell is your problem?โ€ gyeongsu murmurs before taking a step forward in rising annoyance.
luckily, his friend cheongsan wraps his arms around his shoulder and tells him to just let it go. knowing that arguing with a disdainful girl like nayeon was practically a suicide mission. before the situation could escalate for the worse, the teacher stepped foot into the classroom. signaling everyone to stop chatting and head to their respective seats.
as the chairs scraped against the floor, your gaze wandered to the window. a tiny mosquito buzzed against the pane, trying to get in. this reminded you of what those threatening men called your father - a mosquito. they said he was a nuisance who took risks and left problems behind. you wondered why your father never talked about his life, before or now. he kept his secrets to himself, never sharing anything you wanted to know. his silence was frustrating, and you wished he would open up.
โ€œalright everyone, c'mon bring up the phones.โ€ your teacher announced. everyone piled to the front to bring their phones, it wasn't something you cared for. the only person you would text nowadays should be your father. if he didn't get a new one every other week that is.
with what money? you never did ask.
when everyone finishes turning their phones in the teacher, being as intelligent as she is, texts the classroom group chat and you suddenly hear a notification sound coming from right in front of you. your long-ago friend, wujin, and to the right of him, was daesu. who quickly looked behind him and looked at namra and you. pretending it was you two who had their phone still, however the entire class knew it was him. including your teacher. โ€œdaesu, seriously?โ€ a voice asked in disbelief as the rest of the class laughed at his failed scheme so early in the morning.
the teacher began to go on about english studies and you tried your best to focus this time. to put in effort and change your lifestyle around. you're gonna be the best version of yourself, you're tired of trying to blend in and be accepted, and you will exceed in everything you do your studies, the way you carry yourself, everything. today was the day when you no longer lived in fear and humiliation. the new you was something you are ready for and you're starting to no longer care if others aren't. โ€œy/n-ah!โ€ your head snapped up to the teacher who smiled at you and pointed at your hair, โ€œyou look so handsome, wow.โ€ to say your cheeks heat up in embarrassment was an understatement, the class had quiet giggles and all eyes were on you once again. you nodded your head and awkwardly cleared your throat. โ€œlet's seeโ€ฆ how about you give me your take on individuality, in this case?โ€ she points to the chalkboard where she wrote her previous inquisitions.
with a surge of determination, you straightened your posture, shedding the timid persona that had held you back for so long. just 24 hours ago, you were a different person, but now, you were ready to evolve. taking a deep breath, you began to speak, your voice steady and clear. "um, in this character's case, โ€ฆshe lacks the idea of being her own person. she feeds off of what her friends decide at every moment.." you carefully avoided eye contact with your classmates, focusing intently on your words. "meaning that she kinda sets herself up for disappointment when her results don't match her peers." as you finished speaking, you felt a sense of pride and accomplishment. your teacher's eyebrows shot up in surprise, and a moment of silence hung in the air before she responded, "perfect answer." the words hung in the air like a badge of honor, a testament to your growth and newfound confidence.
suddenly, her eyes darted to the other side of the classroom and her gleeful demeanor changed instantly to a sternful one. โ€œyou, bare-su, stand up.โ€ everyone's eyes shot to the back of the class, except yours. โ€œwhat's with โ€˜bare-suโ€™?โ€ she asks as he stands up and everyone laughs once again but a little louder now. as you stare out the window, the uncomfortable conversation fades into the background. you'd rather not dwell on the past or revisit old emotions.
the warm sunbeams streaming through the glass wrap around you, and your mind begins to wander. a familiar figure pedals into your daydream - the boy from the bike shop, with eyes like a fox and dark hair that makes your heart skip a beat. the memory of him is a balm to your soul, a sight that soothes your eyes and stirs your pulse. the thought of seeing him again sends a thrill through you, and you can't help but wonder when your paths will cross once more.
kyungho, kyungho, kyunghoโ€ฆ
the name stuck to you while you gaze at nothing in the classroom. โ€œoh yeah? what did y/n just say then?โ€ the teacher's question cut through the air, snapping you back to reality as it echoed off the wooden classroom walls. suhyeok's eyes widened in surprise, his gaze fixed on you as if seeing you in a new light. your hair, styled differently, and your eyes, no longer hidden, seemed to have caught him off guard. as his gaze met yours, you quickly looked away, pretending not to care, trying to conceal the flutter in your chest. you didn't want him to think you still had feelings for him, that his presence still affected you.
โ€œhe uhโ€ฆ he said..โ€
just as suhyeok was about to speak, hyeonju burst into the classroom, her shocking appearance captivating everyone's attention. her face was pale, with blood trickling down her cheeks and lips. gasps filled the room as the teacher called out her name, but hyeonju collapsed to the ground, unresponsive. classmates rushed to her side, forming a circle around her as ms. park rushed to her aid. you remained seated, stunned, as ms. park cradled hyeonju's limp body, her face a picture of brutal injury. it looked like she had been hit by a car, with deep gashes and bruises covering her skin. the room was filled with worried murmurs and shocked expressions, as everyone struggled to process the scene unfolding before them.
you stood slowly from your seat when you heard someone ask their friend beside them โ€œdid she just say the science teacher drugged her?โ€ your heart dropped. you had had some odd conversations with the science teacher before. him asking you to stay a bit after class and telling you if you felt like you needed to defend yourself from others, to always fight back, and then theyโ€™ll leave you alone.
little did he know that you have already done that and it still didn't exactly solve your crisis. you would just nod and awkwardly look away before saying you had to be home soon or else your father was going to come looking for you, even if you both knew, he probably wouldn't. on certain days, the man's demeanor shifted to one of frantic urgency, as he emphasized the harsh principles of survival of the fittest. his intensity was unsettling, leaving you concerned about his well-being. before you could ask if he was okay, he would dismiss you, leaving your questions unspoken. reflecting on these encounters, you revisited the memories, searching for any subtle signs that might have hinted at his inner turmoil.
โ€œwe gotta get her up, can you get up, hyeonju-ah?โ€ the teacher tried speaking calmly, but every student in the room knew she was frightened just as much as you all were. โ€œi'll carry her,โ€ suhyeok offered, and began carrying the drifting girl on his back with isak and onjo following out shortly behind. ms. park closed the sliding door, leaving all the students to gather in small groups and discuss what they had just witnessed.
the lunch bell's gentle chime echoed through the school's corridors, signaling the start of the midday break. students sprang into action, eager to escape their classrooms. but you lingered, lost in thought, as you made your way out. questions swirled in your mind: what was wrong with hyeonju? why were people blaming the science teacher? would she recover? and then, a nagging doubt: was suhyeok really looking at me-
you looked up to see cheolsu, a quiet boy often overlooked by his peers, crumpled on the floor. he winced in pain, his eyes wide with surprise, as if your accidental stare had been a physical blow. "oh, cheolsu, are you okay?" you asked, offering a helping hand and lifting him up with ease. the height difference between you two was striking, with cheolsu's slouched posture making him appear even smaller. "ugh, s-sorry...i was in a rush," he stuttered, his eyes cast downward, a habitual gesture that spoke volumes about his struggles.
you shook your head and apologized, "no, sorry, my fault, I wasn't paying attention." as you took a deep breath, your gaze lingered on the scabs around his neck, a subtle hint of a hidden struggle. sensing your notice, he seemed to shield his secret, and you instinctively covered the area with a gentle touch, pretending to rub his neck. seeking to shift the focus, you asked, "heading to the cafeteria?" but he sidestepped your question, his eyes locking onto your hair as he asked, "what's up with your hair?" the familiar criticism stung, a reminder of the constant scrutiny you'd been facing.
โ€œj-just uh,โ€ you hesitate, โ€œdoing something different,โ€ you responded while clearing your throat, trying oh so desperately to avoid the awkward ambiance. cheolsu stared at your new look for a few more seconds until he looked at something behind you, his eyes widened before moving to the wall quickly. bewildered by his action, turning to see someone you despised. myunghwan, walking with changhoon smirked as they looked in both of your directions.
your heart sank as you turned to face myunghwan, his smug expression making your blood boil. changhoon, walked alongside him, a sneer twisting his features. you felt cheolsu's tension beside you, his eyes fixed on the duo with a mixture of wariness and hostility.
"look at this," myungwhan stated. they snickered to one another. you rolled your eyes and looked away trying to keep yourself neutral despite the growing unease in your chest. myunghwan chuckled, his eyes gleaming with amusement. his gaze roved over your new appearance, his expression dripping with disdain. "i see, you're trying to.. reinvent yourself," you rolled your eyes, fists clenched. โ€œfuck off.โ€
but myunghwan just laughed, his eyes glinting with malice. "what, y/n? you gonna defend your new boyfriend? how cute.." you felt a surge of anger at his jab, but cheolsu's warning glance kept you from responding. changhoon, however, seemed eager to stir up more trouble. "yeah, what's going on between you two? you're not...together, are you?"
the air seemed to thicken with tension as myunghwan's smirk grew wider. you knew you had to defuse the situation before it escalated further. but how? you felt a familiar knot in your stomach as myunghwan's smirk seemed to grow roots, digging deeper into your skin. "what's going on here?" a soft voice interrupted, slicing through the thick air.
you turned to see a quiet figure emerging from the crowd, their eyes fixed on changhoon with a mixture of curiosity and wariness.
myunghwan's smirk faltered, and for a moment, you saw a glimmer of uncertainty. "just having a little chat," he said, his tone dripping with false nonchalance. the nurse's gaze lingered on myunghwan before shifting to you and cheolsu. "looks like a pretty one-sided conversation to me." the air seemed to vibrate with unspoken words, and you sensed a hidden dynamic at play. myunghwan's eyes narrowed, but the nurse's calm demeanor didn't waver. you looked down to see a rather odd looking infection on the nurses arm. her arm turning an almost black color, her neck twitching. cheolsu and you shared a look of concern, โ€œum..m-missโ€ฆโ€ cheolsu couldn't bring himself to ask so he simply pointed at her revealing forearm.
but before he could say another word, the nurse's eyes rolled back in her head, revealing only whites. her body began to twitch and convulse, her limbs flailing wildly like a puppet on a broken string. her skin turned a sickly shade of green, as moldy bread and dark veins bulge beneath the surface like twisted rivers. a low, guttural moan escaped her lips, growing louder and more menacing with each passing moment. she lunged at changhoon, her fingers grasping for his face like claws, her teeth snapping wildly with almost animalistic hunger. changhoon screamed, his voice high-pitched and terrified, as the nurse's zombie form tackled him to the ground. her hands closed around his head, her fingers digging into his hair like talons. cheolsu stumbled backward, tripping over his own feet as he desperately tried to escape the horror unfolding before him. his eyes were wide with fear, his face pale and sweaty. โ€œwhat theโ€ฆ?โ€
suddenly the nurse took a huge chunk of the screaming boys cheek with her teeth. his screams reached new heights as he frantically tried to shake off the nurse's grip, but she held firm. his eyes widened in terror as he realized the nurse's eyes had turned a strange, almost feral gray. just as suddenly as it had begun, the nurse released her grip on the boy's cheek, and he stumbled backward, clutching at the wound. myungwhan saw the opportunity to shove her however, she had other plans. she rushed at him next but myungwhan turned around and shoved you while swiftly running away down the hallway. where many students were gathered around eyeing the intense and gorey happening just seconds ago. they all screamed and began to scatter, seeing that now changhoon was thrashing on the ground uncontrollably.
you hold your shoulder with your right hand, myungwhan had shoved you with full force causing your shoulder to ache and sting. you wince as you quickly gather yourself. you grabbed cheolsuโ€™s arm, pulling him away from the chaos with a strength that was almost desperate. "we need to get out of here, now!" you yelled, dragging him down the hallway as the sound of the nurse's moans echoed behind you, growing fainter but no less terrifying.
cheolsu stumbled after you, your heart racing with fear. the hallway seemed to stretch on forever, the lockers and classrooms blurring together in a mad whirl of color and sound. you could hear the distant moans of people, growing fainter but still echoing through the corridors like a chilling reminder of the horror you'd just witnessed.
"wait, slow down!" he yelled, his voice hoarse from fear.
you didn't listen. your eyes were fixed on the outside quad, you could hear the distant moans and screams, growing louder with every step. you wrenched open the doors and shoved cheolsu first outside before you. "close it! close it!" you shouted, following close behind. as you shut the doors, you see students screaming inside and running into classrooms. panting, you gripped your shoulder once again in pain, while you both noticed people running away outside as well. โ€œshit,โ€ you cursed. โ€œrun! everyone run!โ€ you turned to hear a girl screaming while running across the schools soccer field only to get tackled by two other bloodied peers. cheolsu shared a look with you before you both ran toward the outside set of stairs of the school as the infected horde burst through the doors you were once holding behind you.
climbing up the stairs, step by step, you felt weightless until a sudden jolt sent you flying. your body rolled and bounced, landing with a sickening crack on your shoulder. the pain was excruciating, and your scream echoed through the staircase as you finally came to rest at the bottom. gritting your teeth, you opened your eyes to see the cause of your fall: a girl with black braided pigtails, her leg twisted at an unnatural angle, bone protruding from her skin. her eyes, bloodshot and wild, locked onto yours as she gurgled and began to crawl towards you with an unnatural speed. you rolled onto your side, desperate to escape, but she climbed on top of you, her grip on your sweater tightening as she pulled herself up to your face. with a surge of adrenaline, you grabbed a nearby rock with your one good hand and swung it behind you, connecting with a sickening crunch.
in a stroke of luck, the rock sent the girl flying onto the grass, momentarily freeing you. as you gazed up, cheolsu remained paralyzed on the same step, his eyes wide with shock. โ€œcheolsu, help-โ€ you yelled, but the girl latched onto your ankle, attempting to sink her teeth in. you grunted, shaking her off with a series of swift kicks. cheolsu's horror-stricken expression lingered as the girl scaled you once more, her relentless grip unyielding. trying to wriggle free from the girls grasps, you look around quickly to find anything to get away.
just as all hope seemed lost, a fleeing girl accidentally collides with your attacker, diverting her attention. seizing the opportunity, you broke free from the infected girl's grasp. you looked up to see cheolsu's fleeting glance before he turned tail and sprinted up the stairs, abandoning you. โ€œwait, w-where are you going?โ€ you shouted, alarm rising in your voice.
as cheolsu vanished from sight, you sprang to your feet, still reeling from the harrowing encounter. but your relief was short-lived, as another classmate - bloodied and bizarre - began to stir across the school yard. his eyes locked onto yours with a menacing glare, and he charged towards you with a ferocious intensity, plowing through others in his path. his bloody mouth twisted into a snarl as he sprinted closer, and you gasped in terror, bracing yourself for the impending impact. but just as he launched himself into the air, something unexpected happened - a shocking savior appeared out of nowhere, sparing you from the brink of disaster. your eyes widened in astonishment as you turned to behold the last person you ever expected to save your skin.
โ€œwe gotta move! come on,โ€ suhyeok grabbed your good arm and pulled you alongside him. you grunted while running feeling a sharp pain every time you moved your body to keep up. you noticed he wasn't alone, choi namra was beside him as well. you never seen her face in any other emotion besides serious. right now, it was horrified.
"what's.. what the fuck is going on?" you panted, wincing in pain as suhyeok's grip tightened around your arm. "what's happening to everyone?"
suhyeok didn't answer, his eyes fixed on some point ahead as he dragged you through the chaotic school yard. choi namra kept pace beside him, her horrified expression never wavering. her eyes darted towards you, and for a fleeting moment, you saw a flicker of concern before her mask of seriousness slipped back into place.
"let me fucking go!" you demanded, trying to keep up with suhyeok's frantic pace. you ripped your arm away from him as you kept running.
"hurry up,," he gritted out, his jaw clenched in determination. "we need to get out of here, now." as you ran, the sounds of mayhem grew louder - screams, crashes, and an eerie, unsettling laughter that sent shivers down your spine. you risked a glance over your shoulder, and what you saw made your blood run cold. the school yard was descending into chaos. students were attacking each other, their eyes vacant, their movements jerky and unnatural. some teachers tried to intervene, but they were vastly outnumbered. the once-familiar surroundings were now a war zone, with desks overturned, windows shattered, and debris scattered everywhere.
suhyeok yanked you back into a sprint, his grip on your arm like a vice. "don't look back!" he yelled. "keep moving!" choi namra kept pace beside him, her eyes scanning their surroundings with a mix of fear and determination. "we need to find a safe place to hide," she shouted above the din. suhyeok nodded, his eyes fixed on a point ahead. "there!"
he led you towards the ladder that was leading up to a window in the school building. you all rushed towards it, once close enough you pushed namra to go first, โ€œgo, try to open-โ€
โ€œno, its not safe. i'll go,โ€ suhyeok states before moving her aside and beginning to climb the ladder, you attempted to hold back an eye-roll. if namra and you were down by where the crazy students were, how were you guys safer..?
you didn't ask the question aloud, as there was no time to bicker over insignificant things. suddenly, you seen two figures barreling towards you and namra. โ€œnamra, go up, now!โ€ you grabbed her hand and hoisted her onto the ladder, โ€œgo! climb!โ€ you seen suhyeok was being pulled into the window, quickly going back to reach for namra. as namra's feet disappeared into the window, you felt a surge of relief wash over you. but it was short-lived, as you saw suhyeok's eyes widen in terror. "hurry! hurry!" he shouted, his voice strained. you turned to him and tried as quickly as possible to climb with two legs and one working arm. you could hear then snarling as you went upward, when you start to feel the ladder tipping back and forth. the weight of the two men making the ladder almost fold under the pressure, โ€œcome on! you got it!โ€
suhyeoks voice rung through your ears, the burning in your shoulder making you wanna just give up, as you reach your arm for the next step, you suddenly feel yourself being grabbed and hoisted upwards. your body feeling light when you came through the window. suhyeok pulled you with all his might and the pull carried you both to the nearby wall. you stumbled into your dimly lit english classroom, gasping for breath. suhyeok slammed the windows shut behind you, leaning against them to catch his breath. choi namra stood guard, her eyes fixed on the doors as if waiting for the inevitable. you leaned against a nearby wall, your mind reeling with questions.
โ€œso? whats going on out there?โ€ nayeon asked impatiently. out of breath, you held onto to your shoulder gently. everyone out of breath or staring was quiet. no one dared to speak. โ€œare you deaf?โ€ she shouted with a voice crack.
โ€œshut up,โ€ you muttered. everyone's eyes were glued to you now. โ€œwhat?โ€ she asked with disbelief, folding her arms over her chest. you closed your eyes while holding in tears because of the pain in your shoulder. โ€œi saidโ€ฆshut up.โ€ you repeated with vigor this time. standing upwards nonchalantly while looking at the doors who were being held by your classmates. โ€œoh you little piece of-โ€
โ€œstop it! both of you! now's not the time for this!โ€ jimin shouted. you winced again with a heavy breath this time. once again all the attention turned towards you. โ€œwhat happened to you?โ€ onjo asked while walking towards you, only to be stopped by her best friend, cheongsan. onjo glared at him before removing his arm, however choosing to still stand beside him.
โ€œi fell,โ€ they stared at you for more information, โ€œdown the stairs outside. one of those..things tackled me.โ€ upon being further informed the students all seemed to be getting more nervous.
โ€œoh..my god. what the hell are they?โ€
the two girls huddled in the corner with freak-struck facial expressions. meanwhile gyeongsu looked like his arms were gonna break from holding the door from opening. โ€œdon't you know? theyre.. zombies.โ€

-SuHyeok would make dangerous missions for his friends and you to have food. He would always tell you to not miss him too much. But he knows that it is for you and his friends
-SuHyeok would be happy to see some safety if you make it out alive with him. If you got bitten and had to be taken out he would hesitate. He already lost a lot of people not you too. Even though you would tell him to let you get out, he would not let you go.
After the apocalypse
-SuHyeok would be glad it is over. He is glad you are still here with him.
-SuHyeok will put a ring on your finger even if both are teenagers. I mean you survived it after all this time and it felt like years.
-SuHyeok would take care of you if you got injured. Sometimes he would have nightmares about you getting hurt.
-In the end, SuHyeok would be glad to have someone like you no matter where you came from or how you are.

The Star Crossed Masterlist
My All Of Us Are Dead Masterlist
My Navigation and Masterlist
Warnings: Normal AOUAD things, Gwi-nam Word Count: 4,890
As you looked up, you saw the one and only Gwi-nam running across the rooftop towards Cheong-san who was running towards him too. They slammed into each other and Gwi-nam got the better of the situation by slamming Cheong-san onto the ground on his back.ย
โ€œCheong-san!โ€ย
Su-hyeok screamed for his friend, getting up right after you had and running towards the two.ย
Cheong-san yelled in agony and you looked around for something to do. You couldnโ€™t bring yourself to fight him. You couldnโ€™t fight your brother, no matter what he was doing to your friends.ย
On-jo had run up to Gwi-nam from behind him and grabbed ahold of his jacket, trying to pull him off without success until she was slung away and landed right in front of you. You, along with Hyo-ryung and Ji-min, helped her up as she winced in pain. You lifted her shirt slightly to assess the damage and luckily there didnโ€™t seem to be anything too bad. At the most, it would probably just bruise.ย
You heard more grunts and looked up just in time to see Gwi-nam kick Su-hyeok monstrously into a pile of metal chairs. You let go of On-jo to run to him but as soon as you did she almost fell to the ground. Cursing, you picked her back up and held her up with her arm around your shoulder. You looked up to take a good look at the person you had called your brother for all your life and didnโ€™t recognize him. Blood covered his chin and jacket. It was fresh and looked like he had just eaten somebody. You would be terrified of him being an actual full-fledged zombie if it werenโ€™t for how conscious and aware he seemed to be.ย
Joon-yeong, thankfully, ran over to help out Su-hyeok who was gasping for breath and you mentally expressed your gratitude towards him.ย
Gwi-nam looked around and skimmed over who was standing in front of him, his eyes glancing over you before he did a double take. His face switched rapidly between emotions; his asshole, tough-guy, dead-eyed face changed to one of confusion, then concern, then relief, until finally, it ended on annoyance.ย
โ€œ(Y/n)? What the fuck are you doing with these assholes?โ€ He asked you and took a few steps towards you but you got dragged back by On-jo, who had gotten her strength back, Hyo-ryung, and Ji-min. All three of them pushed you behind them and you would have given a smile at them for their protectiveness but this was not the time. Gwi-nam scoffed and you stepped out in front of the three girls but On-jo and Ji-min grabbed onto your right arm while Hyo-ryung grabbed onto your left to hold you back.ย
โ€œGuys. Let me go,โ€ you ordered them in the most terrifying and monotone voice you could muster, but it had no effect. While you didnโ€™t regret telling them about how your act was just that, an act, you wished you had done it at a time later than this moment.ย
Gwi-nam scoffed at your friendsโ€™ actions and stayed in his spot, glancing back over to everyone else. He sighed. โ€œWho are you?โ€ He asked them in a voice fringing on being bored to death.ย
โ€œWhat the hell are you? You come from the One Heart club?โ€ Dae-su asked seriously and Gwi-nam looked behind him at the back of his jacket before stuffing his hands into his pockets with an arrogant smirk on his face. โ€œIt's me. Yeah.โ€ When everyone continued to look confused, his smirk dropped. โ€œYou don't know? How the fuck do you not know me?โ€
โ€œI know you. I said it many times before.โ€
โ€œCheong-san donโ€™t!โ€ You warned him and tried fruitlessly to escape the tight grips of the girls behind you. Despite not using their strength often, they were pretty strong.ย
โ€œYou're the bullies' gopher,โ€ Cheong-san ignored your warnings and Gwi-nam raised a hand while taking a threatening step forward.ย
He pointed the hand he used to threaten to hit him with to point at him as he spoke out a warning. โ€œIf you call me that again, I'll kill you.โ€
โ€œYou weren't a gangster and you weren't a good student. And now you're not a human and you're not a zombie either. No matter the time or placeโ€ฆ you're nothing.โ€
Gwi-nam scoffed and clicked his tongue before a menacing smile was set on his face. โ€œI won't just kill you. I'll gouge out both of your eyes and feed your blind ass to the zombies. Oh, yeah,โ€ he promised. He looked around at the group as he spoke again. โ€œEveryone but Cheong-san and (Y/n), can go. Unless you wanna die with this fucker.โ€
โ€œWhat do you want with (Y/n)?โ€ Cheong-san questioned and Gwi-nam shot him a look like he was stupid.
โ€œSheโ€™s my little fucking sister, asshole. Even if you somehow fucking killed me, Iโ€™ll still make sure she gets out of here alive,โ€ he promised and it reminded you of how he would always protect you against your abusive father. Except this time, heโ€™s protecting you against zombiesโ€ฆ while promising to feed your friend to themโ€ฆย
Lovely.ย
When no one moved from their spots, standing with Cheong-san even after Gwi-nam took a warning step forward, the boy tilted his head slightly, annoyed. โ€œYou're all dead.โ€ He then raced forward to charge for Cheong-san who met him halfway and they scuffled. You squirmed with all of your might against the tight grips of your friends but they only loosened slightly until they continued to wrap tightly around your arms. Ji-min did let go to rush forward and help the boys as they fought but Hyo-ryung and On-jo held strong.ย
Joon-yeong got flung backwards and landed on his back, groaning and his glasses flew off his face and onto the ground beside him.ย
Cheong-san got kicked towards you and Ji-min helped him up as Gwi-nam took menacingly slow steps forward until Su-hyeok appeared from behind him with a wooden portrait holder used for painting and slammed it against his back. Gwi-nam spun around to face him and quickly dodged a hit from Su-hyeok before grabbing ahold of his neck and forcing him backward to the edge of the roof.ย
โ€œGwi-nam! Stop!โ€ You begged but he did nothing of the sort.
Luckily, Su-hyeok was a skilled fighter. He jumped up and kicked Gwi-namโ€™s torso backward, making him lean back in an odd, inhuman, contorted way. His feet were still planted on the floor but his upper body levitated above the ground. His spine looked like it snapped in half. His bones crunched as he lifted himself back up and started walking towards Su-hyeok again. At his first step forward, you remembered a self-defense mechanism Su-hyeok had told you once.
If you make yourself dead weight, it will make it harder for people to keep a hold of you.
You dropped your body weight to the floor, On-jo and Hyo-ryung scrambling to keep a hold of you but you escaped too quickly for them and ran towards your brother, jumping on his back and putting him in a chokehold. It wouldnโ€™t do anything to him, you knew this, but just like you couldnโ€™t bear to hurt him, he couldnโ€™t bear to hurt you either.
Or so you thought.ย
Gwi-nam grabbed hold of you and threw you over his shoulder towards the corner of the roof.ย
โ€œDo yourself a favor, and stay the fuck out of this (Y/n/n),โ€ he warned. Your breath was knocked out of your lungs harshly and you wheezed while simultaneously holding your leg where you had scraped the skin of your knee extremely harshly. Blood seeped out all across the concrete beneath you. At the metallic scent, Gwi-namโ€™s head redirected back to you from where it had been focused on Su-hyeok. โ€œ(Y-Y/n)?โ€ Gwi-nam hesitantly took a step towards you, his anger and murderous face taking up that of a concerned brother once again.
Up until Nam-ra walked up behind him and slammed him across the back with a stick set aflame. He turned back to look at her and grabbed her neck, lifting her above the ground.ย
โ€œNam-r-raโ€ฆ!โ€ You tried to weakly scream her name but you still hadnโ€™t regained your breath. Su-hyeok ran over to you, lifting your upper body into his lap as he checked you over but you kept your eyes on the fight between your brother and your best friend. Gwi-nam smacked her down but she was insistent and stabbed the broken stick into his leg when he started moving in your direction again. He groaned and took the broken stick out of his leg, aiming for Nam-ra but she fought against him and held onto his arm.ย
โ€œLet go,โ€ he started thrashing around but she didnโ€™t let go of him. โ€œLet go!โ€ He punched her across the face and she fell to the ground but kept her hold on his arm. He then lifted her up and slammed her back against the ground a few times before finally breaking her hold. He lifted her up and off the ground by grabbing ahold of her hair to bring them face to face.ย
They spoke in hushed tones that you couldnโ€™t hear until Nam-ra threw Gwi-nam near the wall of the roof. He barely wasted a second before getting back up. Su-hyeok, who had gently set you back down onto the ground, stood up, ready to fight. He kicked the back of his knees and punched him before getting slammed against the edge of the roof by Gwi-nam. Nam-ra, out of instinct to protect her new friend, grabbed ahold of Gwi-nam and threw him over the edge of the roof.ย
You watched with mixed emotions as he disappeared over the edge of the roofโ€™s wall and closed your eyes.
โ€œFuck.โ€
Everyone took a sigh of relief after that, even you. You dragged yourself to be leaning against the wall and looked down at your legs. One was worse than the other but they both still hurt like shit. The skin was torn up around your knees and upper calves and for the time being, you werenโ€™t able to walk or stand.ย
You took your shoes off and grabbed ahold of a sharp wooden stick from beside you, using it to cut one of the knee-high socks you were wearing at the ankle. You pulled the sock up to cover the wounds and folded them in half so they would be tighter and prevent any more blood loss. They stained red instantly from how much you were bleeding but you didnโ€™t care. Nam-ra walked up to kneel next to you and took the stick from your hand before doing the other leg for you. You could see the guilt and regret on her face so you covered one of her shaking hands with your own.ย
โ€œIt was the best thing to do,โ€ you told her and she nodded before focusing back on covering your wounds. After that, you put both of your shoes back on and tried to stand but collapsed. Su-hyeok, who had been standing by to give the two of you your space, ran forward and helped you up after the first failed attempt. โ€œSu-hyeok, Iโ€™m fine. I just wasnโ€™t expecting it,โ€ you told him through gritted teeth after a certain movement made your legs sting like hell.ย
โ€œNo. Youโ€™re not fine, and donโ€™t pretend like you are.โ€
โ€œYou got thrown around way more times than me! You should be helping yourself!โ€ You protested but he just scoffed and rolled his eyes before picking you up princess-style and carrying you over to the fire.ย
โ€œI was thrown around more and yet you come out more beaten up than all of us combined. Let me take care of you for once, yeah?โ€ย
You looked away and huffed, ignoring the heat rising to your cheeks and reluctantly thanking Su-hyeok when he set you down in front of the fire, carefully helping you into a sitting position before sitting next to you and stretching out his shoulder.ย
โ€œDamn, it stings!โ€ Dae-su complained about his own wounds and you looked over at him.ย
โ€œYou doing alright, Dae-su? You got thrown around tooโ€ฆโ€ Your eyes roamed over his growing bruises with a noticeable look of guilt.
โ€œYeah, Iโ€™m alright (Y/n),โ€ he reassured you with a smile and you returned it as you listened to Joon-yeong and Cheong-sanโ€™s conversation after Joon-yeong gave up on fixing his glasses.ย
โ€œWhat the hell is with that Gwi-nam kid?โ€ Joon-yeong asked him. โ€œYou said he got bitten.โ€
โ€œI don't know,โ€ Cheong-san admitted. โ€œIt looks like he became something totally different.โ€
โ€œI don't think he can die,โ€ Su-hyeok spoke up.ย
โ€œWhat will we do if he climbs back up here again? None of us are in any shape to take him on againโ€ฆโ€ You trailed off and everyone nodded in agreement.ย
โ€œHe's bad enoughโ€ฆ but to be honest, I'm scared of Nam-ra too,โ€ Ji-min admitted. โ€œYou saw her fighting before.โ€
โ€œNam-ra was literally just fighting out there to help save you guys. How could you still accuse her like this? I understand how youโ€™re scared but sheโ€™s proven herself over and over again. How about a little trust?โ€ You begged Ji-min and she gave you a half-hearted shrug, unsure if she would take your words seriously.ย
โ€œWellโ€ฆ I think it's reasonable to assume they're both half-bies-โ€ Dae-su started until Hyo-ryung elbowed him in the gut and he grunted. โ€œWhat?โ€ He whispered to her.ย
Ji-min turned to Nam-ra. โ€œAre you really okay, Nam-ra?โ€ She asked. โ€œYou won't do that to us, right?โ€ She asked again when she didnโ€™t answer the first time.ย
โ€œWould you believe me if I said that I wouldn't?โ€ Nam-ra asked rhetorically.ย
โ€œWhy do you have to say it that way? Can you at least try to make us believe you? We're going to be together anyway,โ€ Ji-min complained.
Nam-ra took a deep breath and sighed before looking back up at JI-min who had looked down to stare at the fire that was slowly burning out.ย
โ€œIโ€ฆ I've never done anything but study. I don't think I was naive, I think I was a coward,โ€ she looked down at her hands as Ji-min looked back up at her. โ€œI was too scared my grades would drop and my mom would get mad. So I didn't do anything. I was too scared to make friends. My mom would always ask me what rank they were in class, what their parents did, how big their house wasโ€ฆ I never even told her about (Y/n) who Iโ€™ve been friends with for over a year now,โ€ she paused for a moment. โ€œI never thought I'd get a chance to sit around a fire with all of you like this. It's really nice. It's my first time,โ€ she looked up and glanced around at the group with a smile. โ€œIf we somehow manage to get out of here. I really hope we can make a fireโ€ฆ and hang out like this again. I really hope we can do that.โ€
โ€œSure, let's do it,โ€ On-jo agreed and looked over to Nam-ra, their eyes locking and both smiling softly at each other. โ€œIf anyone wants to make a fireโ€ฆ we can all get together,โ€ On-jo promised and you smiled to yourself.ย
โ€œSorry, Nam-ra,โ€ Ji-min apologized and you smiled, liking how everyone has come to see Nam-ra the way youโ€™ve been seeing her for your whole friendship. Nam-ra looked down and chuckled softly with a smile.ย
โ€œOoh. Did you just smile?โ€ Dae-su joked. โ€œSuper awkward.โ€
โ€œGod, come on,โ€ Hyo-ryung whispered and looked at Dae-su with irritation.ย
โ€œWhat now? What?โ€ He asked her, confusion and annoyance mixing.
โ€œWhy don't you two just date already?โ€ Wu-jin asked. โ€œYou guys are so annoying.โ€
โ€œAre you crazy?โ€
โ€œPsycho.โ€
They both spoke at the same time and you just chuckled at their similarities. If they just got over themselves, they would be a genuinely good couple.ย
โ€œHold on.โ€
Everyone looked over at Nam-ra as she spoke and she looked pensive, almost hopeful.
โ€œDid you hear that?โ€ She asked and looked around at everyone, her eyes wide.ย
โ€œNo, what is it?โ€ Su-hyeok asked her calmly, one hand rested on your thigh right above your wound where he rubbed tiny circles on your skin and created butterflies in your stomach.ย
โ€œWhat? Is someone out there?โ€ Hyo-ryung also asked, more worried and scared.ย
โ€œOh fuck, not again,โ€ you complained and mentally prepared yourself for the pain that would come with standing up.ย
Nam-ra looked off into the distance with an expecting gaze. โ€œListen.โ€
Everyoneโ€™s heads snapped in the same direction and they gasped.ย
You focused your hearing on something, you werenโ€™t sure what but you remained focused even as the group questioned the silence. Suddenly, you heard the familiar sound of wind whirring.ย
โ€œWaitโ€ฆ Is that a helicopter?โ€ You asked and stood up abruptly, Su-hyeok right beside you to help you remain balanced. Your left foot didnโ€™t hurt as much, it was just your right that was debilitatingly painful. The others stood up after you and you all saw lights in the distance. Cheong-san walked towards the edge and looked off to see the helicopter heading straight for the school.ย
โ€œHeyโ€ฆโ€ He stated and ran back towards the campfire to grab a lit stick. โ€œFire!โ€
โ€œYeah, yeah! They see us! They're coming!โ€ Wu-jin expressed and everyone started waving their hands in the air frantically. Su-hyeok handed you off to Nam-ra who held you tightly meanwhile he also waved his hands around and screamed.ย
Everyone started screaming at the same time, all pleading for them to come over. Dae-su even ran up to the edge and stood on a crate to raise his body as he yelled. Joon-yeong frantically ran up behind him to make sure he didnโ€™t fall. โ€œThis way! This way! Look over here!โ€
โ€œLook at us, will you?โ€
โ€œCome save us!โ€
โ€œHere!โ€
When the helicopter grew closer so it was hovering above the roof, everyone started cheering in happiness and jumping up and down. Su-hyeok came back over to help support you and Nam-ra let go in favor of covering her ears from how loud the wind was. You all continued to celebrate when you all saw four soldiers dressed in black gear slide down two ropes they threw out from the aircraft, two at a time, and land on the roof with you. Once they were down, they pointed their guns at you and you all backed up in confusion and fear, the cheering and thanking stopping immediately. The helicopter they came down from slowly rose up again and flew away and you all stood with your hands in the air, confused.ย
โ€œGet down. All of you,โ€ one of the soldiers commanded but you all stood still, unmoving.ย
Dae-su spoke first and asked the soldiers, โ€œSir. Can you please help us?โ€ They all aimed their guns directly at him threateningly and screamed out orders.
โ€œFace down on the ground! Get down!โ€
Slowly, each of you lowered yourselves to the ground, Su-hyeok helping you before following, and you all were on the ground, lying on your stomachs. They started walking around and pressing a device near your necks. It beeped after a second and the soldier then repeated a number. You guessed they were thermometers and just prayed for Nam-ra to still be as warm as she was earlier today. You looked over at Nam-ra and saw her using her hair to cover her reddened eye.ย
When the soldier made his way around to you, you tensed as he held the thermometer up to your neck.ย
โ€œ35.2ยฐ C. This one also needs medical attention to her legs. Providing warming blanket and first aid kit now.โ€ย
They continued going around, checking each personโ€™s temperature while one soldier ran to get the warming blanket and first aid kit for you. Su-hyeok came rushing forward to assist you with the cleaning and bandaging process after he was cleared and got permission to do so from the soldiers. You watched him as he wiped down your knee, trying not to think of the sting, and saw the thermometer light up in red as the soldier checked Nam-ra. You held your breath as he spoke. โ€œ34.5ยฐ. Providing a warming blanket.โ€ย
You let out a sigh of relief as one of the other soldiers came back with another metallic blanket and wrapped it around her back.ย
โ€œWe'll rescue them after the mission's complete. Over,โ€ one of the soldiers announced and the others nodded their heads. โ€œYou can get up now.โ€
Everyone slowly stood to rise, Su-hyeok helping you when you almost stumbled. Your legs were better now with the help of the medical equipment but they were still painful to move
โ€œAre you the only survivors?โ€ One asked.ย
โ€œWe don't really know,โ€ Cheong-san spoke for the group. โ€œThere are probably others.โ€
The soldier nodded. โ€œWe're going down for a few minutes. Wait right here.โ€
โ€œAre you not gonna rescue us?โ€ Ji-min shoved her way forward and asked them, doubt leaking from her bold tone.ย
โ€œYes, we will,โ€ they reassured. โ€œSo don't go anywhere. Don't do anything. Just wait here. Understand?โ€ Everyone murmured their agreement and the man who you assumed was the highest rank turned to the other three soldiers. โ€œLet's go.โ€
Ji-min looked defeated and you reached forward to grab her hand. She jumped in surprise as she looked back at you but then relaxed and rested a hand over the one you had on her arm. You could see she was trying not to cry.ย
One soldier stayed behind as the other three went into the school. You were confused about what they were doing. Why would they willingly go into the school? You decided not to pay attention to it and just turned to Nam-ra who was holding her eye in pain with one hand while the other held the blanket around her shoulders.ย
โ€œHey,โ€ you asked and she turned to you. โ€œAre you okay?โ€ You gestured to her eye and she just gave a slight nod.ย
โ€œI think so.โ€
You nodded and thought you should save your strength so you sat down, Su-hyeok helping you and sitting beside you. After a while, the three soldiers came back up, safe and sound, and the helicopter moved over to the same place it was when it dropped them down onto the roof. One soldier reached into his bag and pulled out a harness.ย
โ€œMaster Sergeant. You go up first,โ€ one of the soldiers commanded.
โ€œYes, sir,โ€ he agreed and ran to the rope, but your eyes didnโ€™t follow him as the other soldier spoke again and gained your attention.ย
โ€œWe'll pull you up one at a time,โ€ he explained. Nam-ra had sat down next to you at some point and was holding her ears this time in pain from the loud wind that must have been even louder with her new bodily functions. You reached over to wrap the falling blanket around her shoulders, tucking it around her so it stayed in place, and then wrapped your arm around her shoulder, trying to do as much as you could to stop her from feeling too much pain. โ€œStay still even if you're scared. Okay?โ€
โ€œYou're not landing the chopper?โ€ Ji-min questioned with a panicked look.ย
โ€œWe can't. It can get unstable. He's gonna pull you up, so don't worry,โ€ he reassured and she still looked scared but more relieved. After the soldier rose to the top of the helicopter and was safely inside of it, the other soldier spoke again. โ€œYou can't go all at once, so let's go one by one.โ€
โ€œWe can't all go?โ€ Cheong-san panicked but the soldier quickly eased his worries.ย
โ€œWe can take all of you, but it has to be one by one.โ€
Everyone looked around at who would go first and they all collectively, but silently, decided on Ji-min. On-jo gently pushed her towards the soldier and everyone encouraged her to go first. She looked hesitant but thankful as the soldier started to strap her into the harness.ย
As she started to rise, the soldiers ushered for the next person and Hyo-ryung was urged to go next. Just as you saw Ji-min reaching the top, one soldier stepped away.ย
โ€œSay again. Did you mean everyone?โ€ He asked through his transmitter and went silent as the person on the other end of the line spoke. โ€œBut their temperatures are fine,โ€ he protested and went silent again. โ€œThey're just children!โ€ After another moment of silence, his hand dropped from his head and he looked over to the group, scanning each of you slowly before sighing heavily and responding. โ€œUnderstood. Over,โ€ he turned to the other soldiers on the ground. โ€œCancel the operation,โ€ he ordered. Everyone looked shocked by his words and you stood up on shaky legs. โ€œWe'll take just the package and pull out.โ€
Ji-min started lowering from the chopper just as she grabbed hands with the soldier on top and you could distantly hear her concerned words. The soldiers started taking the harness they put on Hyo-ryung off and she whimpered in confusion before they pushed her toward the group. Everyone was screaming out questions about what was happening but you stood there in silence as you watched the soldier who spoke through his transmitter. You werenโ€™t sure what had happened but whatever it was made it so that they couldnโ€™t and wouldnโ€™t rescue all of you.ย
As Ji-min landed on the group and they started to take her harness off, she started screaming and thrashing around as she cried but the soldiers just pushed her harshly into the arms of your group.
She walked back up to them and one of them pointed their guns at her threateningly. You raced forward to step in front of her before Su-hyeok could stop you, ignoring how your leg stung slightly at the movement.ย
โ€œI wanna get out of here!โ€ Ji-min screamed from behind you as you stared the soldier directly in the eye with a straight face. โ€œPlease, take me with you!โ€
โ€œCome on, sir!โ€ Dae-su expressed. The soldier then pointed his gun at Dae-su and everyone who spoke their complaints.
โ€œW-Wait a second,โ€ Joon-yeong started and the gun then pointed at him. โ€œWhat's wrong with you? We're fine! We're not zombies.โ€
โ€œPlease, just take me with you!โ€ Ji-min begged again from behind you, her hands reaching out to fist the fabric of your shirt.ย
โ€œStand back!โ€ They all advanced forward with their guns to get you all further away from the ropes. โ€œStand back, or we'll shoot!โ€
You locked eyes with the soldier in front again and you could see the distress in his eyes. โ€œSir,โ€ you started but took no steps to advance towards him. โ€œWhatโ€™s really going on?โ€ย
He raised his gun and shot strikes into the air as a warning. You didnโ€™t flinch even as your ears rang from the loud sound, only moving when Su-hyeok ran up from behind you and pulled you back with Ji-min following.ย
Cheong-san had advanced forward with On-jo in his hand as he begged. โ€œI'm begging you. Please take just a few of us with you.โ€
The soldier didnโ€™t respond and after a second Cheong-san took another step forward when he fired the gun into the air again and everyone screamed. At this point, it was only him left on the roof as the others had risen up to the helicopter and he backed up towards the rope behind him as Cheong-san tried one more time. โ€œRescue us.โ€
After the soldier got strapped in, he looked back at all of you with a sorrowful and guilty look. โ€œI'm sorry.โ€
The last of everyoneโ€™s shimmer of hope distinguished away like a flame under the rain as he rose higher and higher into the air before going inside and the helicopter slowly flying away. Everyone stayed silent as you watched the helicopter grow smaller and smaller in the distance until you could barely hear its wind.ย
โ€œThey abandoned us,โ€ Hyo-ryung sobbed out. โ€œDidnโ€™t they?โ€
You nodded.
โ€œNo one's coming to save us now? But why did they do that?โ€
โ€œMaybeโ€ฆโ€ Wu-jin started. โ€œThey thought that all of us were already fucking zombies.โ€
โ€œNo, that canโ€™t be it,โ€ you contradicted.
โ€œThey would have killed us,โ€ Joon-yeong added and you nodded along. โ€œThey wouldn't have left us here alive if they thought that.โ€
Cheong-san turned and in a fit of anger and frustration and betrayal, he kicked the dimming remains of the fire.ย
โ€œC-Cheong-san,โ€ your voice broke as you attempted to stop him but the lump in your throat prevented you from talking anymore.ย
On-jo walked up to him and pulled him away by his arm. โ€œWhat are you doing?โ€
He yanked his arm away from her grip. โ€œIt's pointless. No one's coming. No one else is coming,โ€ he told her angrily and she just watched as he continued to kick at the fading embers on the ground and the rest of the โ€˜SOSโ€™ sign.ย
The scream of agony and bitterness Cheong-san let out tore through your heart painfully but you couldnโ€™t do anything. You couldnโ€™t do anything to help him and your friends. You couldnโ€™t do anything to help your brother.
You couldnโ€™t even do anything to help yourself.

hiiii!! i was wondering if u could do a aouad Su-hyeok fic where him and the reader weโ€™re together in the broadcasting room with everyone else but she ended up getting lost when they were going to save Cheong-San? Maybe she re-finds them after the group got to the roof ?
(established relationship if thatโ€™s okay ๐Ÿค—)
i really hope that makes sense (_T_)
sorry it took so long ๐Ÿ˜ญ su-hyeok x f!reader
murder, zombies, blood (everything in aouad basically)
(on-Jo likes cheongsan, Nam-ra doesnโ€™t like anyone. Also the whole rooftop thing with eun-Ji doesnโ€™t happen at the same time. sheโ€™s already a halfbie and her friend is at the safety camp already.)
Not proofread and itโ€™s not very good ๐Ÿ’€๐Ÿ‘
โ€”โ€”โ€”โ€”-
You both were together when it happened. Su-Hyeok had bought you flowers out of the blue, and you were laughing together outside. He had put a baby pink flower in your hair, stuffing the rest in the dark blue bag that hung on your shoulders. He was just leaning in for a kiss when you both heard a bloodcurdling scream, and saw a horde of students running in one direction infront of you. Looking to see what they were running away from, you saw a group of bloody students stumbling behind the rest. An unfortunate girl had tripped and fell, and you both watched as the group fell on top of her while ripping flesh from her skin with their teeth. You looked at Su-Hyeok in fear, and he got up holding your hand and ran through the halls, following the other students.
You both ran until you found a safe classroom and locked yourselves inside.
Gyeong-Su, Cheongsan, On-Jo, Na-Yeon, Dae-Su, Nam-Ra and Hyeon-Ju were already inside.
Since then, you all stuck together. Bad things happened, like Hyeon-Ju getting infected, zombies breaking in, and more, but you all stuck together and fought no matter how much you were hurting. Eventually, you had found a way to the broadcasting room. The water-pipe hung from the window and everybody took their turns going down. You volunteered to go last, after Su-Hyeok.
In the broadcasting room, Na-Yeon and Gyeong-Su had began arguing. Su-hyeok and Cheongsan went to make them stop, so they didnโ€™t notice. If they did, you wouldโ€™ve been with them right now. You werenโ€™t blaming them, if anything, you blamed yourself. You had slipped. You slipped off the pipe, and luckily grabbed onto a ledge a few floors down just in time. Too scared to call for help in case you attracted the zombies, you went inside the class hoping to find the others soon later.
Su-Hyeok realised soon enough, and he was frantic. He tried climbing up the pipe to get you, but in your place were a bunch of zombies. He wanted to leave, to find you, to save you and bring you back to safety, but nobody let him. He still had hope you were alive. You were strong, he knew that. Despite the growing feeling of despair each hour he wasnโ€™t with you, he held onto that string of hope.
You, on the other hand, were fighting. Running from class to class, hitting zombies with anything and everything you could find. You took a break in the music room, trying to stock up on food and water. Opening your bag and looking at the flowers for a second, before gently placing the food inside to not ruin the flowers. โ€œHeโ€™ll be okay. Heโ€™s with everyone else, and heโ€™s going to be safe.โ€ You thought.
Your break was interrupted by a lone zombie running to the music room. Dropping your bag, you pushed a piano onto it before grabbing a bottle of water and running. You ran to the roof. Luckily, the door was unlocked and you could find refuge there.
You saw helicopters near the school before, you knew more would come soon after, so you waited.
Meanwhile, Su-Hyeok was with everyone else. They had used a drone to locate Cheongsan, but couldnโ€™t find a trace of you. They had made their way to the music room and sat there for a while before exploring the music room for useful things. They couldnโ€™t open the supply room door, but they saw a zombie stuck under a piano.
โ€œHey, Whatโ€™s this?โ€ Dae-Su said as he picked up a dark blue bag. Su-hyeok didnโ€™t pay attention. He was caught up in his thoughts. โ€œIs she okay? Itโ€™s almost been two days.โ€ He thought. Dae-Su opened the bag and said โ€œHey! Thereโ€™s food here!โ€ Which caught Su-Hyeokโ€™s attention. They group had been starving for hours. They all scrambled to Dae-Su to take some food. Su-Hyeok went last, but just as he was about to pick up a Soda can he saw a familiar bouquet of flowers. Wilting baby pink flowers were placed beside the food, just barely out of sight. He grabbed the bag and looked around it, finding a name tag with your name on it.
He froze. He couldnโ€™t think of anything, nothing registered in his mind. Your bag was in the music room, bloody. You were in the music room. You left your bag here, with food and water. By choice? No. Something must have happened. The small string of hope he was holding onto was gone.
Everybody came around to gather, and they all saw your bag. Though they tried to comfort Su-Hyeok, they were all thinking the same thing. You were bitten.
After that, nothing mattered. su-hyeok felt dissociated. He was fighting, but for what?
They made a plan to go to the roof, so that the helicopters notice and save them. So they did. They fought and fought until they made it to the roof, and started banging on the doors to get in.
You were skeptical at first, but you heard Cheongsans voice. You ran to the door and pulled it open.
Everyone fled inside and closed the door behind them, and then you saw him.
He spotted you and his eyes widened in relief. He ran to you and pulled you into the tightest hug, never wanting to let you go. โ€œI thought you were deadโ€ said su-hyeok, holding back tears.
You didnโ€™t say anything, you just held him closer. Sure, you would have to keep fighting, and it wonโ€™t be easy, but you were together. All of it was okay if you were together, and he wasnโ€™t going to let you go ever again.

I Found You |Su-Hyeok|
Tumblr media
(Spoilers)
I tapped my pencil against my desk listening to whatever the teacher was saying. I looked at the board and saw some notes to take. I took my time writing wanting it to be neat. I try my best to look presentable, wanting to meet my parents proud. It's not like they were strict I want to make them proud even though they aren't pushy. It's nice hearing my parents talk to my family about my grades. It wasn't just for them, I wanted to impress Su-Hyeok. We've talked before and we're pretty good friends but I want to be more. Will he know that? Absolutely not, I like being with him and I don't want to ruin our friendship even if I wanted more. I smiled to myself waiting till the bell rang so I could talk to him on the way to the cafeteria. He'd go sit with his friends unfortunately for me, I lost a friend because I wasn't cool enough so I end up talking to random people every day. I wasn't that talkative but I managed to talk to two other girls I wanted to show her I didn't need her. Once the bell rang I packed up my stuff and went outside the classroom to wait for him.
"Jesus, you scared the shit out of me," I said looking at Su-Hyeok grinning.
"Your so easy to sneak up on" He chuckled as a smacked his chest lightly.
"I am not, I just didn't expect a random voice to be right behind me," I said as we made our way to the cafeteria. "How was class?"
"Boring"
"Fooling around?" I asked jokingly raising an eyebrow.
"Maybe," He said smiling.
"Well my class wasn't that great either, I felt like I was going to fall asleep" I sighed. "But I have to work hard"
"No, you need to relax a bit." He said putting his arm around my shoulder in a joking manner, unfortunately. "You need to do something fun and not spend all your free time studying."
"I'll have you know I binge-watch shows and listen to music"
"Didn't you dance and sing in middle school?"
"Yes"
"Do you miss it?"
"Every once and a while I regret quitting," I said. "But there's nothing I can do now"
"You could still sign up," He said. "I'll even watch you perform"
"Maybe" I smiled.
"That should be a yes," He said. "I want to see you dance at least once"
"Like I said maybe." I smiled as he took his arm off my shoulder as we made it to the cafeteria.
"Can't wait for you to say yes later today" He said before walking over to his friends.
I sighed and looked for On-Jo and I-Sak. I saw On-Jo wave her wand to signal me over. I walked over and sat next to her.
"Why is your face all red?" On-Jo asked as I brought out my lunchbox.
"Su-Hyeok" I mumbled. "He's so oblivious"
"Everyone knows about your little crush except him," I-Sak said pointing her chopstick at me. "Just tell him"
"Absolutely not"
"Oh come on," On-Jo said.
"I don't want to lose him," I said taking a bite out of my apple. "I'd rather suffer"
"Don't be overdramatic" I-Sak said
"I'm not"
"Anyways how did you do on the test in Science?" I-Sak asked.
"I got a 95," I said proudly.
"I'm surprised it's not a 100" On-Jo joked
"Oh whatever," I said nudging her smiling. "And you?"
"Looks like we've got to clean up," She said changing the subject. "We'll be back we're just putting our trays back"
"Alright," I said watching them leave.
"Hey, Y/n? I know we don't talk much" I looked up and saw Cheong-San standing in front of the table. "Could you help me out with something?"
"Uh, sure? Depends on what it is" I said packing my lunch box.
"Can you tell On-Jo to meet me in front of the school later, I have to tell her something"
"I think I know what it is so of course" I grinned as he blushed.
"Don't tell anyone okay?"
"I won't," I said standing up. "Good luck"
"Thank you"
"Don't mention it" I smiled and watched him walk away.
I stood waiting for On-Jo and I-Sak to come back. I started to daydream till I heard a bunch of steps. I looked over and saw a bunch of students running in the cafeteria. Someone closed the door on the rest and banging was seen through the glass that it shattered open. Students flooded the cafeteria as chaos quickly spread. I was getting bumped into left and right. I stood up on the table to see what was truly going on. My heart dropped at the sight. People eating others and quickly turning into monsters to spread whatever was going on. I looked around for a place to run but it was almost impossible to leave. The sprinklers went off making everything worse. I saw Cheong-San help On-Jo go through a window and sighed in relief at least one of my friends will survive. I felt an arm tug on me and saw Su-Hyeok pulling me down by my hand.
"We have to go," He said as he grabbed a chair as if it was a shield to run outside. I almost slipped on but quickly caught myself
We ran to the stairs and I followed Su-Hyeok. I wasn't bothered to pay attention to the fact that we were holding hands. We stopped seeing a man on top of a ladder before falling down. As they were distracted we moved the ladder so we were able to get to a window.
"Be careful" He said as he climbed up The window opened and he was pulled through. I started to climb but the ladder started shaking. I looked down and saw a few zombies grabbing the ladder. I felt a hand grab mine as my breathing became shakier. The ladder officially collapsed and the only thing keeping me from the ground was Su-Hyeok's hand. "Don't let go! I've got you okay?"
I looked up horrified and Su-Hyeoks face mirrored mine. I had nothing to grab onto and my hand started to slip from his.
"Hold on a little more okay?" He said panicking. "I'll pull you up I promise! Guys help me!"
I felt more force pull me up but it made my hand slip more. His eyes were tearing up as he looked at me. He was using both of his hands but they kept slipping. I looked down and saw that the zombies walked away from where they just were. I could make a run for it and find someplace to find safety.
"I'm sorry" I whispered as my hand slipped from his.
I fell to the ground and quickly got up running for my life.
"Y/n!" He yelled trying to get down the building but his friends pulled him back.
His scream drew all of the zombies to that building point but I still had to close calls. I never looked back as I kept running forward. I looked at the big tree coming up close that led to a classroom window.
"Here I go" I whispered and did my best to climb the tree I yelped as I saw my foot being grabbed at.
I stomped on it with my other foot holding the tree branch for my life. Once the hand let go I made it to the top. The branches kept creaking as I slowly made it to what looked like the music room window. I looked through the window and saw the coast was clear. I carefully opened the window and climbed in. I sighed in relief until I heard the piano go off. I looked over and saw a girl trapped underneath the piano. I slowly moved back until I fell out of the classroom. I closed the door and noticed that she wasn't going to escape from under the heavy object. I sighed quietly sitting against the wall closest to the window. Fear finally had time to take over as I sat and watched what used to be my classmates bang against the window of the classroom or walk away bloodied with no emotions. I dug my head into my knees crying softly. A day passed by and my head hurt from crying all night and not sleeping. I was too scared to close my eyes just in case a zombie came in. The hallway silence was filled with a bunch of noises and I quickly got up. Before I could do anything the door opened and shut as I started to climb out of the window.
"Y/n?" I heard a familiar voice say. I turned around and saw a person holding a guitar in a bloody uniform.
"Cheong-San," I said stepping down from the window. "You're alive"
"I thought you died," He said as we whispered back and forth looking at the door in front of us.
"Is Su-Hyeok okay?" I said urgently.
"He's safe, don't worry," He said putting his hand on my shoulder.
"Thank fuck" I whispered.
"Stay back," He said referring to the girl under the piano.
"Don't worry she hasn't moved since yesterday."
He just nodded a few minutes later we heard voices come from the intercom. I flinched and hid behind Cheong-San as the Zombies ran to the speakers.
"Cheong-San are you there?" Dae-Su said over the intercom.
"Cheong-San do you hear us?" My heart rate spiked hearing Su-Hyeok's voice over the speakers.
"Told you," Cheong-San said rubbing my back.
"It's me Su-Hyeok. We'll come to you so stay put got it?"
"Don't come here Moron, you can't come here" Cheong-San said walking to the speaker as if it actually does something.
"Shh," I said and continued to listen to what he was saying.
Su-Hyeok kept reassuring Cheong-San they were coming but little did they know it took my whole power to get him to shut up to listen to the announcement.
"And Y/n you better be safe okay? I still have to get that yes from you so I can see you perform."
I nodded to myself but saw Cheong-San planning his escape. I grabbed his hand and pulled him away from the window. "Stop it!"
He was about to fight back till On-Jo came over the speaker.
"Cheong-San please stay still," On-Jo said making him stop fighting my grasp to leave. "I know you never listen to me but listen just this once"
This took Cheong-San out of his dazed state and sat on a desk his head in his hands.
"They'll be fine," I said sitting across from him. "Believe in them okay?"
"Yeah...."
This time music did blare in the speakers as I watched the zombies run to either side of the hallway. My leg bounced anxiously waiting to see if anyone ends up coming to get us. After what felt like forever we heard footsteps coming from the hallway and the door opening. I looked up and saw a group of people. Dae-Su went up and hugged Cheong-San and On-Jo looked over.
"Y/n?" Hyo-Ryung said. "I did see you on the drone camera"
"Drone camera?" I asked confused.
"Never mind that I'm glad your alive" She smiled.
"Where's Su-Hyeok?" I asked as On-Jo hugged me I started to struggle in her grasp trying to leave. "Where is he?"
"He was behind us," Dae-Su said.
Suddenly the door started to bang frantically. There was a voice telling us to let them in. Cheong-San hesitantly opened the door as Nam-Ra and Su-Hyeok ran in. I made eye contact with Su-Hyeok who ran up and hugged me.
"Thank god your okay," He said his voice shaky. "How did you do it, I thought I lost you"
"I thought I lost you too," I said I pulled away from the hug to look at him directly. His face was bloody and he had a bruise on his face. "What happened?"
"That's not important" He smiled gently. "What's important is that I can see you again"
"I should've told you this before but I really like you, when I was stuck in here I thought that I would never see you again and you wouldn't know my feelings. I got scared that I wouldn't be able to tell you and-" my rambling went off as I felt a pair of lips on mine.
"It's okay, I'm here" He cupped my cheek. "And I really like you too so don't scare me like that"
"I won't ever again"
"Promise?"
"I promise," I said hugging him and he let my hair. The soothing made me feel like collapsing from exhaustion but my happiness kept it away. I heard two people clapping at our confession.
"Shut up," Su-Hyeok said.
Even though this is one small moment in the hell hole that we have ahead of ourselves that I'm not sure I'm ready for it. This moment was the happiest little did I know the chaos that was just beginning.

Hello guys,
I want your guys help if you know this wattpad aouad fanfic.
I don't know if it is offensive to ask for a wattpad fanfic on tumblr, if it is then sorry. But I really want to find this story again. I am trying to find it but no luck. This is my only chance ๐Ÿ™
It is a aouad x reader, (Gwinam,Suhyeok,cheongsan) likes y/n
And she is like a brat girl, always writing something on her diary and her diary is very precious to us and everybody knows that. When the outbreak happens she was at canteen with her friends but got seperated but Gwinam saves her and they went to kitchen. Gwinam usually calls her princess throughout the story. They had there moment in kitchen making jokes and fighting zombies where Gwinam makes a joke that how even zombie's wants to eat y/n ass. She then went on different way to find her friends and Gwinam reluctantly let her leave. Gwinam said that if they met again then he will kiss her because according to him e ven the zombies could understand the sexual tention between them.
Then she met suhyeok and namra and went to the class through ladder. I remember there was also a part where she was bit or something but she didn't change ( her eyes became red and heightened sense of smell) Gwinam came to the broadcasting room in order to find her and take her with him but got to know that she is bit. Then gwinam kinds of kidnaps her from that broadcasting room and they went out.
There was a part were she lost her diary but suhyeok finds it and told her that ( that part comes when Gwinam was going to kill the principle)
There was a part where nayeon goes through her diary and told everyone that she f***** Suhyeok in past.
This story was still going on and I lost it.๐Ÿ˜– please if anyone had read this story then please tell me the name or link please it is like the awesome story.
Please help guys,
Thank you.
(The ask a question part that cones above is totally my mistake ๐Ÿ™‚
I wanted to change it to ask anonymous but I couldn't and this happened I now I can't move it away sorry๐Ÿ˜…)

Chapter One
Harabeoji lays on the hospital bed, unaware that the world continues without him.
You're his only visitor today. The room is cold, and his heart monitor fills the silence since you won't.
You don't know what to say, where to start.
Do you tell him that he needs to wake up? That since he fell sick, your step-grandmother used his coma as an opportunity to move everyone from your family home (sans yourself) and that her son, your half-uncle and proxy, is already making deals to have the line of succession passed to him instead?
Seoul is too far from Hyosan for you to visit him, to remind him to keep fighting and to keep vigil at his bedside, but they moved his treatment here anyway. Have already brought themselves a sky-line apartment right in the centre.
If you told him that they've left you alone, that they've left you behind, would that be enough to wake him up?
On your lap, you've brought a collection of Western comic books you've been reading to practise your English and since you need to fill the quiet somehow, you pick one out to read:
The Walking Dead, it says.
If Harabeoji finds your pick distasteful, he doesn't say.
(You wish he would).
Tumblr media
In a class-room setting, the Vice-President is meant to ensure that there is strong communication between the Class Reps and the President. When the President is absent, it is up to them to act in their stead. To lead the class through ever-changing situations with a clear head and mature outlook.
At times, you enjoy being responsible for such tasks. The position gives you a sense of purpose on days when you feel set adrift, makes you feel more present as you tend to your responsibilities and resolve minor conflicts. Those are the days you feel like an ordinary student, responsible only for the happenings of your class.
Other times however, it's a bitter reminder. Of Harabeoji who's counting on you to do good, of the dynasty you're set to inherit in his name and of the interests you've had to sacrifice in favour of activities more appealing for Universities overseas. Like being Vice-President.
Joon-Yeong insists you should have been Class President when the positions are first announced. It's unfair Nam-Ra gets the position because of her Mother's bribery when you're not only first in class but have given up more to commit to your school's night self-learning programme and your new role.
He says it with an air of indifference as he crosses his arms, but his eyes burn behind his glasses. You think it's because losing the Presidency to a friend will make the loss hurt a little less, and because it would excuse you from not hanging out with him and the others as much as you used to.
You don't point it out to him, though. Joon-Yeong has to come to his own conclusion for things to stick. Instead, you make a show of pointing your finger right at his nose as you order himโ€“and the others watchingโ€“to call you "VP" henceforth.
It's not much, but if you show that you're not upset with the position you're given then your friends have no grounds to be angry on your behalf. You just hope that overtime, they'll come around about the Class President you do have in the meantime.
You did in the end, hadn't you?
Tumblr media
Speaking of your Class President, Nam-Ra always complains about the music playing on your headphones whenever she slides into her seat next to you, but it doesn't stop her from leaning over your textbook to assess your work.
You respond by turning your volume all the way up so the melody of Auld Lang Syne rattles your ears, mouth curling when she nods begrudgingly at your answers.
There isn't much she'll find to begin with, but it's routine; Nam-ra grumbles about your music in the morning as she looks over your work (way better than her rhythm techno beats, mind you), and you pretend this isn't her odd way of showing her friendship.
Silently, you offer her a piece of Poki from your half-opened bag, your own show of friendship, and she accepts the treat after a long, drawn out moment. Even though she doesn't say anything, you can see her face soften in the corner of your eye, and beyond the obvious, you're glad that she's not actually mad about your song choice for today.
"Wake me up when Ms. Park comes," you say after a moment, falling into your normal position as you cross your arms over your textbook, cushioning your head as you close your eyes. Nam-ra predictably grumbles at your command, but doesn't make a move to disturb you.
And drifting off, you hope that today is another calm day.
Tumblr media
It's not.
Hyeon-Ju's bloodied entrance is too shocking for the day to be anything but calm.
Even when she's whisked away by Ms. Park, Su-Hyeok and a few others to the infirmary, the shock gives way to unease and the feeling settles under your skin before you can do anything about it. It makes you itch to do something, anything.
Ms. Park instructs you all to resume studying but hearing what Hyeon-Ju said and seeing her state in general, more than half the class group together to brainstorm what happened between your classmate and Mr. Lee.
Nam-Ra seems to be the only one actually studying and while it looks like you are too, with all your pens laid out and your head tilted down to your book, you're actually listening in on the chatter around you. Pulling out your stationary was just a show of solidarity, if anything.
From what you gather, no one seems to say anything that corroborates your unease or the sense of foreboding that's taken root. Dae-Su's idea is perverse, Wu-Jin is quick to slap him on the back of his head, and I-Sak returns with a troubled face before the others can chime in.
At once, everyone turns their attention towards her, even Nam-Ra, but the weight of someone's stare grows heavy on the side of your face so you turn to other side of the room instead, catching Gyeong-Su's gaze just as he snaps his head back to I-Sak.
You're sure he knows you caught him staring at you because the tips of his ears are pink, and his posture is rigid as he faces the front. If you weren't feeling so agitated, your skin still itching, you'd smile at his embarrassment.
How long will he wait before he confesses?
"โ€“What happened? Is Hyeon-Ju okay?" Wu-Jin chimes. He kneels next to I-Sak when he asks, and you begin tapping your finger on your desk when she speaks, pulled back to the matter at hand.
When you saw Hyeon-Ju last, the poor girl was delirious as she stumbled into the room, eyes fluttering as she tried to stay awake. Her face was bloodied, her hair was matted and when she collapsed by Ms. Parks' feet, she could could barely move.
However, the Hyeon-Ju I-Sak left in the infirmary sounds like a completely different person.
Having to be restrained as she thrashed on the bed. Hissing. Biting.
She scratched Ms. Kim, I-Sak says.
There's a cold sweat running down the back of your neck the more you imagine it, different scenarios flitting through your head in quick succession, but when I-Sak mentions some weird shot Mr. Lee injected her with, the agitation you feel reaches a crescendo.
You stop tapping, deciding that you need to see things yourself.
Nam-Ra glances at you from the corner of her eye, and you hope the look you flash her doesn't belie your nerves.
It turns out though that the Class President must consider you more of a friend than you realised (the kind of friend that you cover for), because her mouth twists like she knows you're up to something but doesn't push.
"I'll find a mop to clean up the mess," you lie, grabbing your bag.
"Hurry back," is Nam-Ra's cool reply.
Tumblr media
This is a multi-fic story.ย
I intend to post this story on Wattpad and Ao3 shortly. Maybe even Quotev and FF.net, too.ย

The Letter
Pairing: Su-hyeok x Male reader
Tumblr media
Su-hyeok,
I know you feel like it's the end of the world right now. But I know you will have the strength to keep moving. It will be hard, but I know you can do it for our friends will need you. But please promise me something.
Promise me that you won't do anything stupid and do your best to get out of the school alive. And also, make sure you take care of yourself and don't shoulder everything yourself. Lean on our friends for comfort just as I know you will let them lean on you. While I may not be next to you, remember that I will always watch over you. I wish we could make more memories together. But that's okay, I'll always remember the ones we've created.
Goodbye, Su-hyeok.
I love you.

Su-hyeok reread the letter again โ€ฆ and againโ€ฆ and again.
His lips began to tremble, tears threatening to fall, hands shaking. He folded the paper, bringing it close to his chest as if it were the last treasure he had left of (Y/n). Su-hyeok let himself fall to the side of his cot, curling into himself and crying for the first time in the three months he had been at the camp.
"I promise." su-hyeok cried, repeating those two words over and over to himself.
That's how On-jo found him hours later, fast asleep, (Y/n)'s letter in his hands. she didn't have it in her to wake him up to eat with everyone. She bought the blanket over Su-hyeok before leaving out of the tent.
She never saw a certain (H/c) haired boy in her school's uniform, kneeling in front of Su-hyeok, watching him sleep, a sad smile on his face.

in a flash of adrenaline-fueled strength, cheongsan wrenched the wooden frame from the classroom window sill and brought it crashing down on the zombie's skull, shattering the glass and sending the undead attacker tumbling to the ground. the sudden motion freed you from the zombie's deadly grasp, but the relief was short-lived as you collapsed to the floor, your shoulder throbbing in agony, feeling as though it had been torn from its socket. hroryeong rushed to your side, her voice laced with panic, "did it get you? you weren't bit, right?" but your response was reduced to a mere moan, your body consumed by an overwhelming tide of pain. with gentle urgency, hroryeong propped you against the wall, easing you off the cold floor. as your head lolled back against the wall, she pleaded with you to get up, but her words were drowned out by the cacophony of pain screaming through your mind, rendering you unable to respond.
a whispered curse escaped your lips as you struggled to hold back the tears welling up in your eyes, desperate to maintain a semblance of composure in front of your peers. the girls closed in around you, a wall of support, as you turned to witness the boys employing makeshift wooden frames to hold off the undead. but then, daesu burst into action, ripping an entire classroom door from its hinges with a fierce battle cry. "hey!" he blared, "get out of the way!" the boys scrambled to clear a path as daesu charged forward, door held aloft like a shield. with a series of swift, precise shoves, he blocked the zombie horde, creating a crucial barrier.
inspired by daesu's bravery, the boys rallied behind him, pushing forward with renewed determination, their collective momentum building as they fought to reclaim ground from the relentless undead.
with a shared glance, the girls nodded in unison, swiftly moving to support you. they carefully draped your one functional arm over hroryeong's shoulder, forming a united front as they navigated the treacherous hallways. the boys, meanwhile, strained against the undead horde, their grunts of exertion echoing through the corridors as they stumbled forward, blindly rounding corners.
upon reaching the stairwell, the boys seized the opportunity to redirect the zombies down the stairs, creating a temporary barrier. the girls, undaunted, collectively lifted you up the upper stairs, their footsteps a testament to their determination. summoning every last ounce of energy, you pushed through the pain, refusing to become a burden, and ran alongside them, your feet pounding the stairs in a desperate bid for safety.
the boys clattered the stairs behind you, their footsteps closing in as they struggled to catch up. meanwhile, hroryeong had swiftly pulled you into the first available hallway on the next floor, but her hasty decision soon proved misguided - the corridor was already teeming with stumbling zombies. in a flash, the girls' voices rose in unison, "go! go!" as they propelled you up another staircase, desperate to outrun the undead. you winced in pain, your makeshift sling threatening to unravel amidst the chaos. "it's... slipping," you ground out through gritted teeth, alerting hroryeong to the danger.
with a panicked gasp, she swiftly resecured the sling, her fingers shaking as she worked. simultaneously, the boys surged forward, forming a barrier between you and the ravenous horde, their bodies blocking the zombies that had been drawn by the commotion.
jimin spun around, her eyes locking onto daesu as he sprinted towards her, the wooden door clutched in his hands. but her gaze quickly shifted, her eyes widening in alarm as she spotted something lurking behind him. "daesu! watch out!" she yelled, her voice piercing the chaos. daesu reacted swiftly, spinning to face the new threat and hoisting the door like a shield, blocking the zombies' advance. but their respite was short-lived, as they found themselves encircled, the undead closing in on all sides.
you glanced up, wincing in pain, and saw that you were trapped, pinned between the zombies and a single, tantalizing doorway. "jimin-ah!" you shouted, grabbing her attention, and nodded frantically towards the door. jimin rushed to the door, only to find it locked, her face contorting in frustration. "shit, it's locked! we need a-a key or something to open it!" she shouts, her voice carrying to the others. daesu and jimin exchanged tense words, their argument fueled by the desperation to escape, their voices rising as the zombies closed in.
in a rapid, determined move, onjo commanded daesu to push back against the zombies with renewed force. meanwhile, she crawled forward with a sense of purpose, her hands grasping for the school's fire hose, coiled and ready for emergency use. she wielded the hose's metal nozzle like a hammer, pounding relentlessly against the metal lock. as the group held their collective breath, their exhausted muscles screaming in protest, hroryeong buried her face in your shoulder, her body trembling with fear. in a poignant reversal of roles, you found yourself now offering comfort and support to the girl who had once helped you.
"onjo, please!" hroryeong begged, her voice trembling with fear as tears streamed down her face. onjo summoned every last ounce of strength, her final swing landing with a resounding clang as the lock yielded, the door creaking open in defeat.
with a collective sigh of relief, the girls surged forward, pouring into the classroom like a dark tide. you ushered hroryeong across the threshold first, ensuring each of them reached safety before turning to daesu, who still lingered outside. "guys! it's open, come on!" you urged, your hand reaching out to pat daesu's shoulder as you held the door open, a beacon of hope in the chaos.
in a final, desperate bid for safety, the boys heaved against the door with all their might, then turned to sprint into the classroom. but in the chaos, cheongsan's foot caught on a splintered wooden plank, shattered remnants of the window frame, and he stumbled. a zombie, sensing vulnerability, began to crawl towards him with eerie speed.
without hesitation, you dashed out into the fray, ignoring the girls' frantic pleas from inside. you grasped cheongsan's arm, yanking him to his feet, and dragged him towards the door, his legs scrambling to keep up. releasing your grip, you spun to slam the door shut, the zombies' snarls and thuds echoing through the room as you leaned against the door, your heart ringing in your ears. breathless, you slid down the door, holding it closed, and glanced down at your shirt - now more tattered and filthy than ever.
as you caught your breath, the reality of your situation sank in. the zombies' relentless pounding on the door echoed through the room, a grim reminder of the horrors outside. the girls huddled together, their eyes wide with fear, while the boys stood frozen, unsure of what to do next. nayeons voice trembled as she spoke, "w-we can't stay here. we have to find another way out." but her words trailed off, lost in the uncertainty that gripped them all.
in a hair-raising moment, daesu's scream pierced the air as a zombie's bloody hand clamped onto his face and hair, its fingers digging deep into his skin. the creature's torso had wriggled halfway through the shattered window, its eyes fixed on daesu with a ravenous gleam.
without hesitation, joonyeong sprang into action, grabbing a fire extinguisher and slamming it into the zombie's head with a loud crash. the creature's grip faltered, its body slumping backward as it tumbled out of the window. but in the chaos, joonyeong's wild swing had shattered another pane, leaving a gaping hole in the wall.
"get a desk!" cheongsan yelled, his voice ringing out as the group scrambled to respond. in a flurry of movement, they heaved chairs and desks into place, forming another barricade to block the windows. everyone except you rushed to help, their faces set with determination as they worked to secure their fragile sanctuary.
tempers frayed as nayeon's angry voice was heard, her words aimed squarely at onjo. "how could you lose it?" she shouted, her frustration palpable.
before you could even process what had been lost, gyeongsu intervened, his practicality a stark contrast to nayeon's emotion. "who cares?" he said gruffly, as he grasped another desk, his focus fixed on the task at hand. "we gotta secure the room now," he stated, his eyes locked on the front of the room as he headed back to join the others.
a fleeting sense of calm was shattered as nayeon's biting remark sliced through the air: "like you can talk." the familiar spark of animosity between her and gyeongsu was unmistakable, their long-standing dynamic of constant bickering rearing its head even in the face of catastrophic danger.
as you witnessed the exchange, it was clear that their petty squabbles had become a deeply ingrained habit, a reflexive pattern of behavior that persisted even as life and death hung in the balance.
gyeongsu's scoff dripped with loathing. "it's your fault we're in this mess. you were supposed to block the door and you didn't." nayeon stood her ground, her chin held high, as she delivered the final blow: "and if you had actually done what you were supposed to, then the gym teacher wouldn't have gotten to us." the air was heavy with tension, their verbal sparring a stark contrast to the dire circumstances that surrounded them.
you attempted to intervene, starting with a stern "nayeon-", but she swiftly cut you off, her words spilling out in a torrent of anger. "we almost died because of you! you're so fucking annoying," she spat, her venom directed at gyeongsu, who seemed to be seething, his anger barely contained.
but then, a sudden shift - "you forget to remember, you were the reason he left the door in the first place. always bitching at him..." your own pain and irritation boiled over, causing you to lash out at anything that even hinted at raising your blood pressure.
nayeon's lips parted, her eye twitching with agitation, as she lashed out: "seems like you always have something to say, huh? if you hadn't made coach kang so mad, maybe mijin wouldn't have turned!" her words stung you, sparking a surge of anger in both you and gyeongsu. you both began to close in on her, but the room erupted in a chorus of caution, everyone urging you to "leave it alone."
it was clear that this was neither the time nor the place for recriminations, yet nayeon's relentless jabs left you baffled. why was she still fueling the flames of discord when unity was crucial to your survival?
a sense of unease settled over the room as onjo's worried voice cut through the tension: "suhyeokie? has anyone seen him?" the question cast a shadow of concern, sending a shiver down your spine. you scanned the room frantically, searching for the familiar tall figure, but he was nowhere to be found. a growing sense of dread gnawed at your gut.
"he was right behind me," cheongsan called out, his voice strained as he struggled to hold the chairs in place against the window, barricading the zombies outside. the words only heightened your concern, and you felt a surge of fear. "did he..." you started to ask, your voice laced with worry, your heart racing with the urge to rush out and find him. the silence that followed was oppressive, heavy with unspoken fears.
โ€œhe didn't get bit,โ€ cheongsan finished for you, his words a welcome relief that prompted a shaky exhale. you hastily masked the betraying breath with a throat clearing, trying to compose yourself. โ€œat least, not when i last saw himโ€ฆโ€ cheongsan trailed off, his voice barely above a whisper as he too succumbed to worry for his best friend, another young life hanging hazardously in the balance.
slumping into a worn, abandoned chair, your mind spiraled into a tornado of despair, consumed by the haunting thought that he might truly be gone. the possibility that he wouldn't return, refusing to be dismissed. and yet, despite the anguish he had caused, your heart still skipped a beat at the mere memory of him. why did this toxic longing persist, even as your heart seethed with resentment? the pain he had inflicted over the past few months still lingered, a festering wound that refused to heal. so why couldn't you shake the feeling of your heart shattering into a million pieces? your thoughts drifted back to the beginning, to the moment when it all started, and the memories came flooding backโ€ฆ
as the lunch bell rang, the hallways transformed into a sea of chatter and laughter, with clusters of friends walking together. you, however, found yourself alone, making your way back to your friend's classroom to return a borrowed book. as you turned the corner and began descending the stairs, your breath hitched- changhoon and gwinam stood before you, their nonchalant strides a stark contrast to your sudden panic. with lightning-fast reflexes, you spun around and dashed back up the steps, desperate to avoid detection.
you ducked into a nearby classroom, sliding the door shut behind you and pressing your back against it. catching your breath, you cautiously approached the window, peeking out to see the duo sauntering down the hallway, hands buried in their pockets. but then, changhoon's gaze snapped upwards, locking eyes with yours in a fleeting moment of terror. your eyes widened as he nudged gwinam, directing his attention to you. you dropped down, dashing to the back of the room where a decorative screen door panel offered a fragile hiding spot. you concealed yourself behind it, clamping a hand over your mouth to stifle any betraying sounds.
abruptly, voices pierced the air, making your senses go on high alert. "yo! suhyeok!" gwinamโ€™s shout sent your eyes darting frantically towards the ground, straining to listen, but only muffled murmurs reached your ears. an oppressive silence followed, causing your legs to tremble beneath you as you crouched in fear.
then, the creak of the classroom door opening made your eyes go wide with terror. you froze, holding your breath, and pleading with any higher power to spare you from harm. a whisper seemed to slice through the air, "yah, go check the back right there." changhoon's voice sent a chill down your spine. the scraping of desks and approaching footsteps made your heart race, each step echoing through the room like a countdown to doom. "the moron couldn't have gone far, we saw him in here," gwinam's detached remark only heightened your fear, his words dripping with venom.
without warning, the curtain door rustled, and a figure emerged, sending you into panic. you gazed up, fear etched on your face, only to be met with a familiar sight - the same guy from the bathroom encounter. his eyes, filled with sympathy and pity, locked onto yours, while your body trembled like a leaf, tears welling up in your eyes. you resembled a lost, helpless kitten, and his expression softened at the sight. a pang struck his chest as he took in your fragile form, curled up in a ball. unaware of the conversation about you, he was taken aback.
"found him?" changhoon and gwinam demanded, their eyes fixed on him for an answer. suhyeok's gaze darted back to you for a fleeting moment before shifting to the other door, slightly ajar. "no, he's not here. must have slipped out the other way," he replied swiftly, covering you with the panel once more, shielding you from view.
you couldn't fathom it - was he truly helping you? "shit, come on!" changhoon's irate voice echoed as he stormed out the door. the sound of footsteps faded into the hallway, and you exhaled a shaky sigh of relief, allowing the pent-up tears to stream down your face. your tense body finally relaxed, surrendering to the emotional release. but then, the panel shifted once more, sending you scrambling backward, your heart racing. suhyeok's gentle voice cut through your fear, "hey, hey, it's okay, they're gone." he knelt beside you, his calm demeanor a bandaid to your frazzled nerves. overwhelmed with gratitude, your head drooped forward, relief washing over you like a wave. hastily, you wiped away your tears, forcing yourself to compose your emotions.
you caught him gazing at you, and swiftly averted your eyes, your ears flaring with heat under the intensity of his dark brown stare. suhyeok's lips parted, but words faltered, trapped in his throat. he yearned to offer solace, yet hesitated, fearing it would only add to the awkwardness. "please...just go," you whispered, your voice barely audible, as you fixed your gaze on your lap, avoiding his eyes.
struggling to stem the tide of tears, you felt exhaustion seep into your very being. the daily grind of fighting to navigate school had taken its toll. the relentless torment - dog feces in your shoes, brutal beatings after class, harassment on your way home, and public humiliation in the classroom - had drained your spirit. the weight of being an outcast, a perpetual pariah, crushed you. even your home, once a sanctuary, now felt like a source of pain. your dad's indifference to your bruises, his dismissal of your nocturnal cries, and his neglect of your suffering had become too much to bear. the cumulative effect was suffocating, leaving you feeling utterly defeated, unable to cope anymore.
โ€œyou're no longer on the baseball team,โ€ suhyeok said, disregarding your plea for him to leave. his words hung in the air, prompting you to look up at him in bewilderment. you sniffled, "what?" he simply nodded, his expression unreadable.
"you were on the team, right? i think i saw you play a few times," he said, a faint smile on his face. with a mix of reluctance and embarrassment, you pulled yourself off the floor, dusting off your pants and adjusting your school vest. "um...yeah. that was about a month ago," you admitted, causing suhyeok's smile to falter. he averted his gaze, looking away awkwardly before responding, "right, yeah...it's been a while since i've seen a game, so..." his voice trailed off, leaving an uncomfortable silence.
โ€œwhy are you friends with them?โ€ you interrupted, curtailing his nonsensical words. your gaze locked onto his, a fierce glare burning with intensity. โ€œthey're bullies, cruel and heartless. why?โ€ you asked, your voice laced with confusion and hurt, your eyes welling up with emotion. suhyeok felt the weight of your scrutiny, like a spotlight shining down on him, and he faltered, stuttering before responding, โ€œwe've...we've been friends since childhood, they're not that bad, i mean...โ€
you burst out laughing, mocking his naive words, "not bad, huh?" your laughter echoes again, incredulous that you ever thought he was different. the realization hits you - he's just like the others, "you guys are all the same." with a mix of disgust and disappointment, you shove past him, turning to leave. but he grasps your arm, spinning you back around. his face contorts in offense, hurt by your words, "that's not true."
you swiftly shoot back, "then prove it," the air thick with unspoken meaning, your words a gauntlet thrown. but before suhyeok can respond, the classroom door slides open and a teacher breezes in, interrupting the tense moment. you both hastily step away from each other, trying to appear nonchalant. you hide your tear-stained face behind a veil of hair, avoiding eye contact, while the teacher asks with a cheerful smile, "oh, sorry for the interruption! i thought ms. jang was here. did you two see where she went?" suhyeok quickly attempts to match her bright demeanor, pointing outside, "yes, I saw her head to the teachers' lounge."
the teacher nods, seemingly oblivious to the tension between you and suhyeok. โ€œalright, thank you! ill go catch up with her!โ€ she exits the classroom, leaving you both alone once again. suhyeok takes a step closer to you, his eyes locked on yours. โ€œlook, im sorry that-โ€ you didnt wait to hear his apology before leaving the classroom and sliding the door closed behind you.
as the final bell rings, releasing a flood of students into the afternoon, you make your way down the school steps, only to sense a tall figure falling into stride beside you. your gaze drops to find the familiar book you'd forgotten, now being offered to you with a charming smile. suhyeok's eyes sparkle as he says, "you forgot this."
you're taken aback, surprised he'd waited until after school to return it. your pulse quickens at the thought. snapping back to reality, you quickly look away, nodding with a brief, forced smile. the only way you could thank him without actually saying the words. you continue on, merging with the sea of students crossing the street, trying to blend in. as you continue walking, you can't shake off the feeling that suhyeok is still beside you. you glance over, and sure enough, he's keeping pace with you, his eyes fixed on the path ahead. โ€œwhere are you headed?" he asks, his voice casual, as if he's just making conversation. you hesitate, unsure how much to reveal. "just home," you reply, trying to sound nonchalant.
suhyeok nods, his smile still in place. "mind if i walk with you? i'm headed in the same direction." you shrug, trying to appear indifferent, but your mind is racing. what does he want? why is he following you? as you walk, the silence between you grows more uncomfortable. suhyeok points out a few landmarks, but you only give curt nods.
"why are you following me?" you ask, deciding to confront him directly. "you could've just returned the book and left." suhyeok's smile falters for a moment, before he looks away, scratching the back of his head. "i guess i just wanted to make sure you got home okay," he says, his voice a little softer. you raise an eyebrow, skeptical. "that's it?" suhyeok looks back at you, his eyes locking onto yours. "im not like myungwhan and them. im gonna prove it to you," he states with that charming smile once again.
you study his face, trying to read between the lines. what does he mean by "prove it" to you? "what do you mean?" you press, your curiosity getting the better of you. suhyeok takes a deep breath, his eyes never leaving yours. "i mean, i know they've been giving you a hard time. and i'm sorry. i'm sorry i didn't do anything sooner." you feel a pang of surprise. no one's ever apologized for their friends' behavior before. especially not someone like suhyeok. "why are you telling me this?" you ask, your voice barely above a whisper.
suhyeok's smile reappears, this time with a gentler warmth. "because i want to," he says, his response frustratingly vague. you roll your eyes, unimpressed. as you continue walking side by side, you notice two girls across the street, clad in another school's uniform, pointing and whispering in your direction. your face heats up with embarrassment, and you instinctively pull your hoodie up to conceal yourself.
but before you can hide, suhyeok leans in, his fingers brushing against yours as he gently pulls your hoodie back down. his face is suddenly mere inches from yours, his eyes sparkling with amusement. a sudden thrill runs through you at the unexpected proximity, and you feel a flutter in your chest. the whispers and giggles from across the street fade into the background as you become acutely aware of suhyeok's presence.
suhyeok's voice cuts through the warmth, his words laced with a hint of concern. "you're gonna catch a heat stroke if you put your hoodie up," he says, his tone effortlessly casual. as he speaks, his hands reach out to gently tease out the tangles in your hair, his touch sending a wave of warmth through your body. his fingers work with a tender precision, as if trying to soothe a skittish creature. the sensation is both calming and unnerving, leaving your cheeks and ears flushed with a gentle heat.
his hands linger, and for a moment, you're trapped in the intimacy of the gesture, the world around you melting away. then, he steps back, his eyes sparkling with amusement, and you're left to wonder at the strange sense of vulnerability that lingers long after his touch is gone.
as you stand there, trying to process the unexpected tenderness, suhyeok's gaze drifts to your hoodie, which is still clutched in your hand. "seriously, take it off," he says, his voice low and persuasive. "it's too hot for that." you hesitate, โ€œits fine..โ€ you say, unsure of what to do. but before you can make a decision, suhyeok reaches out and gently unzips your hoodie from your chest to your lower belly. he helps you take off your backpack and hoodie then holds it for a moment, his fingers brushing against yours, before tossing it casually over his shoulder.
"come on," he says, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "lets keep going." he turns and starts walking, leaving you to follow. you do, your heart still racing from the unexpected touch. as you walk, you can't help but steal glances at suhyeok, wondering what other surprises he might have in store. the sun beats down on you, warming your skin, and you feel a sense of freedom wash over you. maybe, just maybe, this day won't be so bad after all.
next thing you know, time slipped by effortlessly as suhyeok became your constant companion, walking you home with a consistency that was both comforting and thrilling. four weeks passed, each day blending seamlessly into the next as the distance between you and the taller boy grew shorter. with every step, your connection deepened, and your heart began to beat in tandem with his presence. for the first time in what felt like an eternity, the prospect of school no longer filled you with dread. the halls, once a battleground, became a mere backdrop for the quiet moments you shared with suhyeok.
teasing comments and snickers, once a constant hum, faded into insignificance as suhyeok's presence became your shield. his calm and gentle nature was a comfort to your rattled nerves, soothing your fears and quieting your doubts. as the days turned into weeks, your heart, once a heavy burden, began to feel lighter, freer. it was as if suhyeok's presence had given you permission to breathe, to live, and to feel.
a sense of determination washed over you as you stepped into the school's bustling hallways. a single thought consumed your mind: confessing your feelings to suhyeok. the connection you shared had grown too strong to ignore, and you could no longer keep your emotions hidden.
with every step, your heart beat faster, but fear was nowhere to be found. suhyeok's gentle nature had become a sanctuary, a place where you felt safe and understood. the time you spent together had woven a sense of intimacy, making it feel as though you were already inseparable. in your mind, the lines between friendship and something more had blurred, and you couldn't help but wonder if suhyeok felt the same. today, you were ready to find out.
in an empty classroom, you wrote a heartfelt letter to suhyeok, revealing your true feelings. your hands trembled as you poured your emotions onto paper. once finished, you folded the letter and made your way to his locker, where his name was written in beautiful calligraphy. you slipped the letter inside, the soft sound echoing through the silence. in that moment, you felt vulnerable, yet hopeful. you had shared a part of yourself, and now all you could do was wait and wonder if suhyeok felt the same.
hours passed, and the silence was deafening. you couldn't focus in class, your mind wandering to the letter and suhyeok's potential response. as the final bell rang, you gathered your belongings and made your way to your usual meeting spot, wondering if he'd even show up. as you turned the corner, your heart skipped a beat. suhyeok was leaning against the wall, his eyes fixed on yours with an unreadable expression. you felt a flutter in your chest as he pushed off the wall and approached you, the letter clutched in his hand.
"can we talk?" he asked, his voice low and gentle. you nodded shyly, and he led you to a quiet corner of the schoolyard, away from prying eyes. the air was thick with anticipation when he finally looked up, his eyes locked onto yours, and you saw a glimmer of something there, something that gave you hope. just as suhyeok's words hung in the air, a trio of unwelcome figures emerged from the shadows, their presence like a dark cloud. myungwhan, changhoon, and gwinam loomed behind suhyeok, your eyes fixed on the letter in myungwhanโ€™s hand.
your gaze dropped, and your heart sank as you saw the bullies' hands grasping the paper, their faces twisted in disgust. they devoured the words you had poured your heart into, their snickers and snorts piercing the air like daggers. โ€œi never thanked you for being my friend,โ€ he began to read out loud. you shook your head with tears welling in your eyes. this can't be happening, โ€œyour kind gestures and gentle words reached a part of me that no one has ever touched.โ€
the three bullies erupted into a chorus of mocking laughter, their cruel amusement echoing through the schoolyard as they reveled in the intimate words you had shared with suhyeok. the crowd around you grew, drawn in by the spectacle, as myungwhan's voice boomed out, reading your private confession aloud.
"โ€œim grateful to be as close to you now, but some days i wonder if we could be even more,โ€" he cackled, his voice dripping with derision.
you stood frozen, blinking in shock, as the words you had poured your heart into were used against you. the laughter and snickers of the crowd cut deep, and suhyeok's face twisted in anger, his eyes flashing with a fierce protectiveness.
the moment felt like an eternity, as if time itself had slowed to savor your humiliation. but in the midst of the chaos, suhyeok's words were abruptly silenced as gwinam slung his arm around his shoulders, pulling him into a suffocating grip. "damn y/n.. i know i would call you fag, but for you to actually be one? i mean, what a coincidence right?" gwinam sneered, his voice dripping with spite.
the crowd around you erupted into a murmuring of whispers and snickers, smartphones held aloft like a sea of tiny mirrors reflecting your humiliation. "what a shitty confession, he couldn't even say it to his face.." a voice murmured in the crowd. suhyeok's eyes flashed with anger, his face twisted in a mixture of rage and helplessness as gwinam's grip tightened around him. the scene unfolded like a nightmare, each passing moment a fresh wave of torture.
changhoon's hands closed around your neck like a vice, his smile twisted and sinister as he pulled you into a suffocating chokehold. tears streamed down your face as you struggled to break free, but his grip only tightened.
"i bet you got hard while writing this.." myungwhan's voice dripped with sadistic pleasure as he instructed gwinam to "check", his eyes gleaming with a perverse curiosity. suhyeok's face was a mask of paralysis, his eyes locked on yours for a fleeting moment before he turned away, abandoning you to the mercy of your tormentors. the betrayal stung like a fresh wound, as you realized he wouldn't be coming to your rescue.
"get off me!" you shout, your voice cracking with desperation as gwinam's hands move to unbuckle your belt. "no!" you scream, loud sobs wracking your body. in a surge of adrenaline, you lash out, sending a kick flying into gwinam's face. he stumbles back, blood streaming from his nose. the momentary distraction gives you the leverage you need to elbow changhoon and shove him against the wall.
seizing the opportunity, you grab your backpack and sprint through the crowd, your feet clattering the ground in a frantic bid for escape. you don't stop until you're safely behind the door of your home, where you collapse, exhausted and shaken. the memory of that day haunts you, and you can't bring yourself to return to school. but a week later, a truancy notice arrives, and your father's firm hand forces you back into the very environment you're desperate to escape. the next few months are a blur of isolation, as you struggle to come to terms with the trauma you've endured.
you could never forgive him for setting you up like he did.. so why does your heart break when he's gone now?
a piercing screech shattered the air, jolting you back to reality. you instinctively covered your ear with your one good hand, wincing in pain. then, a voice cut through the chaos, calm and authoritative.
"students and teachers of hyosan high school. i'm park sunhwa, the english teacher. something strange is happening throughout the school. some students are attacking others indiscriminately. so please flee and find a safe place."
a wave of despair washed over the classroom, but the sound of an adult's voice sparked a glimmer of hope. tears of fear and relief streamed down faces as the reality of the situation sunk in. "and if any students or faculty hears this and is able to please call the fire or police department. students, hide somewhere safe until help arrives. if you can get out of the school, please get out." the room erupted into a chorus of sobs and panicked whispers.
joonyeong's voice suddenly speaks up. "its alright, we can just stay in here for now until help comes," he says, but his words are met with skepticism. the group's eyes dart to him, searching for reassurance. meanwhile, you spring into action, scouring the backpacks for anything that might aid in your survival. isak and cheongsan watch with interest, their hushed conversation about onjo's struggles without suhyeok barely audible.
but one phrase catches your attention: "onjo's crush". your gaze drifts to onjo, and you realize that suhyeok's absence has left a void in more ways than one. it seems he had possibly more than one secret admirer. the revelation sparks a flicker of curiosity, but it's quickly extinguished by the gravity of your situation.
your search for supplies yields little more than makeup and secret diaries, which you leave untouched, respecting the privacy of your peers. you know all too well the pain of having your personal life exposed. meanwhile, joonyeong approaches cheongsan, his voice low and cautious. "you know, if y/n hadn't grabbed you back there, you probably would've got attacked." the words hang in the air, a stark reminder of the danger that lurks outside.
cheongsan's glare is immediate, but joonyeong presses on, his tone laced with a mix of sadness and urgency. "im just saying, now would be a great time to make amends. especially with suhyeok gone, we only have us now." the weight of his words settles over the group, a poignant reminder that in the face of adversity, their bonds may be all that remain.
as you continue to rummage through the backpacks, your hands close around a crisp white button-up shirt, its sleeves short. you hold it up, eyes closed, a silent prayer of gratitude escaping your lips. the two boys can't help but stare, their gazes drawn to the simple yet profound moment. "i cant.." cheongsan whispers, his voice barely audible. gyeongsu's curiosity is piqued, and he shifts his attention to cheongsan, sitting down beside him. "why not?" he asks, his eyes darting between cheongsan and you, who continues to search for supplies. "i mean, its not like we have anything else to do," gyeongsu states, his gesture encompassing the desperate scene unfolding before them. his words hang in the air, a poignant reminder of their precarious situation.
cheongsan's gaze lingers on you, a mix of frustration and determination etched on his face. with a sudden burst of energy, he leaps off the table and strides towards you, his movements fluid and purposeful. meanwhile, your search for sustenance yields a disappointing find - a chip bag, already ravaged and empty. you curse under your breath, frustration getting the better of you, before tossing the bag aside.cheongsan's eyes dart back to joonyeong and gyeongsu, seeking reassurance. and he finds it - both boys offer encouraging smiles and thumbs up, a silent show of support that seems to steel cheongsan's resolve.
cheongsan's sigh hangs in the air as he turns to face you, his eyes locking onto yours with a hesitant intensity. "hey," he says, his hands still clenched at his sides. you rise to your feet, bracing yourself for another confrontation, but instead, cheongsan's words catch you off guard. "what?" you ask, your tone softening.
"i um, i just wanted to say, thanks. for coming back for me earlier," he confesses, his gaze dropping, a hint of vulnerability creeping into his voice. stunned by his gratitude, you realize that your actions may have saved his life. but then, you recall how he, in turn, saved yours. "lets call it even," you say with a sheepish smile, the tension between you dissipating. "i would've been out there in that hallway still if you hadn't smacked that zombie on the head."
cheongsan's small smile mirrors yours, a fragile truce forming between you. it's a surreal moment, one that makes you realize that near-death experiences can be a powerful catalyst for understanding. you both see each other in a new light - not as enemies, but as humans, with families and loved ones waiting for you at home. you're just kids, after all, fighting to survive in a world gone mad.
as the smiles linger, the atmosphere in the room shifts, becoming less tense. you both stand there for a moment, the only sound being the distant moans and groans of the infected outside.
you nod in agreement, feeling a sense of camaraderie wash over you. "we should keep watching each other's backs." cheongsan nods, his eyes locking onto yours with a newfound sense of trust. "sounds good."
in an instant, the calm is shattered by nayeon's urgent voice. "did you get bitten?" she asks, her words hanging in the air like a challenge. isak responds swiftly, her tone laced with a mix of fear and defiance. "i said i wasn't!" your eyes meet cheongsan's, a shared sense of concern sparking between you. you both turn to isak, and your hearts sink.
her nose is smeared with dried blood, and her eyes betray a growing panic. isak rushes to a mirror, her reflection revealing the true extent of her distress. her eyes are bloodshot, protruding slightly, and her entire body begins to tremble. "come on, i-i said im okay!" she shouts, her voice cracking. onjo springs into action, grasping isak's hands in a desperate bid to calm her down. cheongsan and you approach cautiously, your minds racing with the terrible possibility that onjo might be next to fall.
a sense of urgency washes over you as you grasp isak's arms, trying to calm her down. "isak, calm down. it's okay," you say softly, attempting to soothe her growing panic. cheongsan mirrors your actions, gently pulling onjo away from the unfolding chaos. the two friends, once inseparable, are now separated by a growing sense of dread.
onjo struggles against cheongsan's grip, trying to shove him away, but it's too late. isak's body begins to contort, her teeth clenched in a vicious snarl as she crashes to the floor. "she's turning!" wujin's voice rings out, a stark warning that sends a chill through the air.
the echoes of nayeon's scream still linger in the air, but they're quickly replaced by the ominous shuffling of footsteps outside. the zombies, drawn by the commotion, are closing in. the boys spring into action, grasping desks and chairs to barricade the door, their faces set in determined lines. but their efforts may be in vain, as isak, now standing, takes a menacing step forward. her eyes fix on onjo and cheongsan, her chest heaving with ragged breaths.
"isak, please don't do this," onjo begs, her voice trembling, but isak doesn't falter. she charges towards them, only to be repelled by cheongsan, who shoves her away with a wooden stool. you seize the moment, dashing to the window and frantically working to unlock it with one hand. but it's a futile effort - the latch stubbornly refuses to budge, requiring two hands to open. time is running out.
a warning shout pierces the air, "y/n! look out!" and you spin around, heart racing, to see cheongsan launching himself at isak. he shoves her with all his might, and her body sails through the air, heading straight for the window. you drop to the floor, narrowly avoiding the collision, as isak crashes through the glass and disappears outside. but onjo reacts fast, dashing to the window and grasping isak's hand, her fingers closing around it like a vice.
onjos legs flail wildly, and you grab hold, straining to keep her from pulling herself out the window too. cheongsan seizes the wooden stool, his face set in a grimace, and brings it down, hammering isak's hand in a desperate bid to break the grip.
"onjo, you have to let go! she wouldn't want you to throw your life away!" you shout, sweat dripping down your face as you struggle to hold on with one working arm. it's the hardest thing you've done so far, and you're not sure how much longer you can last. the tension is palpable as you feel isak's weight teetering on the edge, and then, in an instant, it's released. cheongsan's swift action has broken the grip, and you hesitantly let go, your body sagging in relief.
you crawl away from the window, drained of all energy, and collapse against the drawers. the solid wood provides a comforting support as you lean against it, exhausted to the core - mentally and physically spent. the ordeal has pushed you to the limit, and for a moment, all you can do is sit there, trying to catch your breath and process what just happened.
onjo's body crumples, and she dissolves into a fit of sobs, curling into a ball as the weight of her grief becomes too much to bear. the room falls silent, with all eyes on her, as the sound of her anguish fills the space. gyeongsu's urgent voice cuts through the moment, "come block the door!" and you spring into action, joining the effort to barricade the entrance against the growing zombie horde. with one hand, you help push the desk into place, securing their safety.
meanwhile, jimin gently lifts onjo into a chair, standing beside her and offering what comfort she can, her hand rubbing her back in soothing circles. hroryeong sits down beside her, tenderly brushing the hair from her face and holding her hand, the two girls enveloping her in a cocoon of support. cheongsan's gaze lingers on onjo, his expression softening, and that's when it hits you - a spark of realization that changes everything.
the pieces fall into place as you realize cheongsan's true feelings for onjo. it's a surprising epiphany, and you can't help but wonder why you didn't see it sooner. his past glares and tense behavior around you and onjo now make sense - he was harboring a secret crush.
a small smile plays on your lips as you think about how unnecessary his worries were. onjo, sweet as she is, never sparked that kind of interest in you. she's not your type, and you're relieved that cheongsan's concerns were unfounded. but now, you're curious to see how this newfound understanding will change the dynamics between you all.
cheongsan's gaze sweeps the room, his eyes lingering on each face before settling on the window. "we should go," he says finally, his voice firm with conviction. "we're not gonna last here any longer." the room falls silent, with all eyes on him, as the weight of his words sinks in. wujin speaks up, her brow furrowed in concern, "where would we even go?" cheongsan's plan is already in motion, it seems. "we could use the hose from earlier," he explains, turning to gyeongsu. "i'll need you to open the door a little bit, just enough to fit the hose."
you stare at him, in disbelief, wondering if he's lost his mind. "cheongsan, what are we gonna do with a hose?" you ask, your voice laced with confusion, as you try to make sense of his seemingly harebrained scheme.
cheongsan's response is a steadfast gaze, his eyes burning with determination. you meet his intensity with a healthy dose of skepticism, rolling your eyes before voicing your doubts. "whatever this is, it better work," you say, your tone laced with a mix of curiosity and trepidation.
as you help gyeongsu clear a path, moving desks and chairs out of the way, you can't help but wonder if cheongsan's plan is nothing more than a desperate gamble. gyeongsu, too, seems uncertain, her voice tinged with reluctance as she slides the door open slowly. "isn't it better to wait for the rescuers to come save us?" he whines, her eyes darting nervously towards the unknown dangers outside.
cheongsan's words are laced with a sobering gravity, his eyes gleaming with a sense of leadership that commands attention. "we might all die by the time they arrive," he states, his tone firm and resolute. in this moment, you know you'll trust him without question, no matter the outcome.
with a deep breath, cheongsan drops to the floor, his belly flat against the ground as he stretches out to reach the hose. but time is of the essence - the zombies outside are a constant threat, and one wrong move could mean disaster. "i can't reach it," he admits, his gaze locking onto yours, a silent plea for help.
you scan the classroom frantically, searching for anything that might bridge the gap between cheongsan's outstretched arm and the elusive hose. your eyes dart from chair to desk, desperate to find a solution before the zombies outside become an even more pressing problem.
in a moment of synchronistic ingenuity, cheongsan darts into the school's lab, mirroring your own train of thought. he rummages through the shelves, his hands moving with a sense of purpose, until he emerges victorious, clutching a mannequin arm. "that's one way to get longer arms," you remark, a hint of amusement dancing in your voice, as cheongsan waves the prosthetic limb at you, his face split by a triumphant grin. you can't help but shake your head in disbelief at the absurdity of it all.
but absurd or not, the makeshift solution proves to be a stroke of genius. cheongsan uses the mannequin arm to snag the hose, pulling it towards him with a swift motion, before quickly closing the door and tugging the hose to safety. the plan, however unorthodox, has worked perfectly.
the hose scrapes against the wooden door, its rasping sound filling the air as cheongsan instructs everyone to tie it in a way that can secure a hand or foot. joonyeong chimes in, "zigzag! make it a zigzag," his correction transforming the makeshift rope into a sturdy, climbable fixture. with the rope readied, it's swiftly thrown out the window, the same window that bore witness to isak's tragic demise. you, gyeongsu, and cheongsan cautiously peer out, scanning the area below to see if the rope reaches a safe haven.
daesu, still recovering from his ordeal, can't help but chuckle at the sight of the three of you, "you guys look like the three stooges," he wheezes out, his laughter punctuated by a fit of coughing. but his mirth is short-lived, as a zombie's sudden appearance at the door sends a jolt of fear through the room, and daesu's expression turns grave.
"i'll go down and check the empty rooms," cheongsan declares, his voice firm. "i'll call when it's clear, okay?" the others nod in unison, their faces set with determination. but then, cheongsan's gaze shifts, his eyes locking onto onjo with a fleeting glance that speaks volumes. you catch the look, a subtle exchange that hints at a deeper concern.
"actually, someone else should go," cheongsan says, his tone firm but laced with a hint of protectiveness. wujin nods in agreement, his hand on gyeongsu's back. "you should go, gyeongsu."
gyeongsu's eyes widen in disbelief, his face scrunched up in a comical mix of shock and protest. "what? why me?" he asks, his voice laced with incredulity, as if he can't fathom why he's been chosen for this task.โ€
"it's alright, i can go," you say, already starting to climb, but wujin's firm hand pushes you back, earning a scathing glare from you. "you can't go!" wujin insists, his eyes darting to gyeongsu, who's still looking uncertain. "look, you're gonna make an injured guy go first?" wujin asks, his tone calling out gyeongsu, as he gestures to your injured state.
gyeongsu mutters a curse under his breath before beginning his descent, his movements cautious and slow. you, wujin, and cheongsan watch anxiously, offering words of encouragement as he makes his way down. just as you're focused on gyeongsu's progress, a sudden hand on your hurt shoulder shoves you aside, making you wince in pain. nayeons determined face appears, her eyes blazing with a fierce determination. "i wanna go down first!" she shouts, her voice firm and resolute. wujin's eyes widen in surprise, his hands gesturing towards your injured form. "hey, what the hell?" he asks, his tone a mix of confusion and concern.
"one person at a time," cheongsan cautions, his voice calm and measured, as he addresses the visibly irritated onjo. "you might fall if it shakes too much." you can't help but think, "should've put her down first...then shook the rope," your muttered remark a silent critique of the situation, accompanied by a withering glare that goes unnoticed in the tension-filled moment.
the air is thick with unspoken frustration, as the group waits with bated breath for gyeongsu to complete his precarious descent, the rope creaking ominously under his weight.
a sudden shout from below electrifies the air - "ms. park is here!" gyeongsu's voice rings out, and you gasp with excitement, your heart racing with hope.
"oh, thank god," you exhale, a sigh of relief washing over you as the weight of their predicament momentarily lifts. cheongsan's voice cuts through the din, his words a rallying cry - "ms. park is on the second floor, let's go, guys!" and with that, the group begins their descent, one by one, down the makeshift rope.
nayeon goes first, followed by daesu, jimin, hroryeong, joonyeong, wujin, namra, and finally onjo. you and cheongsan are the last two left, and your mind is a jumble of thoughts as you help each friend make their way down. but as cheongsan turns to you, his eyes expectant, you realize with a jolt of fear that you can't possibly climb down with one hand. a sense of resignation washes over you, and you prepare to accept your fate, separated from your friends.
"alright, your turn," cheongsan says, his voice firm, but you don't move. instead, you force a smile, trying to mask your growing unease. "you go first," you say, your voice laced with a false bravado, as you desperately try to hide your fear.
just as cheongsan is about to speak, his gaze drops to your arm, visible through the torn shirt. his eyes widen in concern as he takes in the swollen, purplish hue of your injury. but before he can express his worry, you preemptively cut him off, trying to rush him into action. "come on, we don't have much time," you urge, attempting to divert his attention from your injury.
however, cheongsan refuses to be swayed. instead, he gently but firmly passes the rope back to you, his eyes locked on yours with a resolute determination. "no, you go first," he insists, his voice firm but laced with a deep concern. "i'm not gonna leave you behind."
"cheongsan! come on!" gyeongsu's voice echoes from below, urgent and insistent.
cheongsan peers out the window, his head momentarily disappearing from view. "hold on! we're coming!" he shouts down, before turning back to face you. the next few seconds are heavy with unspoken tension, as you both glance behind you, witnessing the ominous sight of chairs crashing to the ground, overwhelmed by the relentless pressure of the zombies. then, without warning, cheongsan grabs your arm, his eyes burning with determination. "now! go!" you urge him, but he resists, his grip tightening.
"wait," he says, his voice low and resolute. "i'll go first, but come right after me. i can lead your foot to the next loop. it'll be easy, but we gotta get out of here fast. we need you, y/n, you can't end it like this." his words are laced with a deep conviction, a refusal to leave you behind.
to say your eyes watered at his words was an understatement - they welled up with emotion, threatening to spill over at the sincerity and conviction in cheongsan's voice.
"fuck it. let's go," you say, a fierce tenacity feeling within you. you both nod, a silent understanding passing between you. cheongsan swiftly begins his descent, waiting for you below. but just as you start to climb out the window, the sound of desks crashing to the ground echoes through the lab, followed by the ominous scuttling of zombies as they claw their way into the now-empty room. you hastily swing one leg over the windowsill, cheongsan guiding the other as it searches for a foothold. "next step, y/n, let's go!" he urges, his voice a steady anchor in the chaos. your arm protests with a sharp cramp, strained from holding your weight so tightly against the wall, but you grit your teeth, refusing to give in to the pain.
as you start your descent down the ladder, a sudden, terrifying sight makes your heart skip a beat - a bloodied girl leaps out of the window above, plummeting towards the ground. in a desperate bid to eat something, she grabs onto cheongsan's leg, causing the entire rope to shudder and sway precariously. "cheongsan! hold on!" you scream in horror, as cheongsan slides down the rope, his grip faltering.
frantically, you scan your surroundings for something, anything, to help, but you're utterly hopeless. you're powerless to intervene, unable to do anything but watch in despair.
"shit, try to shake her off!" you shout down to cheongsan, your voice laced with desperation. cheongsan grunts in effort, trying to dislodge the girl, but her grip is unnaturally strong, refusing to yield.
thats when you hear a familiar deep voice, โ€œcheongsan-ah!โ€ you look upward to see lee-fucking-suhyeok on top of a window ledge above where you both had just climbed down from. you looked up at him with relief, โ€œsuhyeok!โ€

Desperate II
HEYYY Guys! I haven't posted in to long! So many things to do! But thank you, all of you, who reacted and followed me. It means the world to me! SOOO, here is, FINALLY, Part 2 of "Desperate".
It hurts. That's the first thing you thing when you wake up. You slowly open your eyes, rubbing the strange sleep and drowning sensation that something is horribly wrong, and that staying asleep might chase it all a way. You open your eyes anyway, though, and stare right into On-Jo's eyes. "Yah!", you yell, heart pace quickening, then slowly returning to normal upon recognizing your best friend. You suddenly laugh, remembering how horrified you were, just what felt like mere moments ago. "You would not believe the dream I had today! I was walking down the hall, and was attacked and...", you trail off, eyes taking in the room around you. On-Jo, Ji-Min, Na-Yeon, Su-Hyeok, I-Sak, Dae-Su, Gyeong-Su, Nam-Ra, and Cheong-San, the latter sporting a nastly-looking gash, and all not looking good. "What.. no, no no no no no nonononono".
There was no way, that that anything you experienced in the last hour was real. No way. There couldn't be.. things, ravaging your school, killing people, EATING, people. But you were smart. Smart enough not to deny it. And even smarter enough, to believe it. "When?", you croak, throat tired, the drowsiness becoming a luxury that you wish you could return to. But you were wide awake now. You stand up, dusting your skirt, in a way that makes you recall the last hour. Slowly, your hands find their way back to your sides. "Not to long ago", replies On-Jo, handing you a cheap, crinkly plastic cup of water. "Well, honestly, we don't know exactly when, but we know that it was some time before lunch", Su-Hyeok jumps in, popping his back of the wall, and coming over to help you to your feet. You feel your heart shatter as you stand. What would your Mother and father think? How much they would worry, and what if.."This isn't just in the school? I mean, what if? If it's happening here, then how can we assume it isn't happening elsewhere, too? like back home?", I-Sak speaks your thoughts. You look around you again, as the room falls into a knowing silence.
"Gyeong-Su, close the door more tightly you big oaf!", you hear Na-yeon's high pitched and nasally voice yell. You all turn from you designated spots in the classroom, looking over at the young boy. You seem to notice this kind of stuff at times like these. How young everyone is. How no one is yet deserving to die. "I am! And don't think you have a place to talk, you snobby, spoiled girl!", Gyeong-Su snaps back. "What did you just call me!?", "Alright everyone, enough yelling. There are people going crazy, there is no time for bickering", Cheong-San interjects, but the two adolescents ignore him, opting for their bickering, instead. "Well, at least I'm not a poor rat!" "EXCUSE ME!?", you sigh, sharing a look with the girls, while the rest of the people in the room try to break the two apart. "I HATE YOU!" "And i don't? the feelings MUTUAL, honey!". You roll your eyes, but in the process you notice something. And open latch. A broken window, a gap, where there shouldn't be. You dash up, running to close it, catching everyone's eyes, and stopping the bickering in the process. But before you can, the door is slammed open, knocking the wind out of you. You fall back, already knowing that the person behind this door, they, were going to be trouble.
YASSSS! Finally got around to posting this! I sincerely hope you guys like it! I want to be able to get back to posting! Please interact, and FOLLOW! It helps the motivation! Oh, and requesting does too, ๐Ÿคญ.

โ€œGyeong-suโ€ฆโ€ You heard Cheong-san say from behind you but it was like you were hearing it from underwater. The only thing you could hear was the sound of your own heartbeat.
And the thoughts that Gyeong-su might not have one soon.
As Gyeong-su wiped his nose to find it bleeding, he brought his hands up to see black and purpled prominent veins growing from underneath the cuff of his undershirt and he looked at them in shock, shaking his head and mumbling indistinctly.
He stood up and breathed shakily as he tried to speak while his chair skid across the flooring. โ€œHey, hey. Whatโ€™s wrong with me? Somethingโ€™s wrong!โ€
You stood up from your chair and stood in front of him. You grabbed his hands and he looked you in the eyes. You nearly started sobbing on the spot as you saw the whites of his eyes turning red but swallowed down the lump in your throat before smiling at him.
โ€œY-yoโ€ฆโ€ you tried the first time but couldnโ€™t get the words out so you cleared your throat and tried again. โ€œYou just need a t-tissue. Itโ€™ll be okay.โ€
He nodded as tears filled his eyes. The both of you knew you were lying but it was okay to be delusional sometimesโ€ฆ right?
Heโ€™d be okayโ€ฆ right?
If you just kept repeating that then he would be okay.
Everything was fine.
Gyeong-su was fine.
You were fine.
Right?
You frowned as you heard the scurrying of footsteps behind you while you reached into your pocket to grab one of the crumpled tissues you had from earlier and gave it to him but he couldnโ€™t seem to grab it and it dropped to the floor.
โ€œItโ€™s not trueโ€ฆโ€ You heard Cheong-san say from behind you yet you kept all of your focus on the boy who was in front of you.
โ€œCome on. Get rid of him. Get rid of him now!โ€ You heard Na-yeon scream and just as you were about to yell at her to shut up you felt someone grab you by the hand and pull you away from the boy.
โ€œNo, noโ€ฆ!โ€ You tried to complain and weakly pulled against the hands restraining you, already knowing who it was. โ€œSu-hyeok, heโ€™s not. Gyeong-suโ€™s not! I was with him for half an hour, heโ€™s not!โ€ You tried your best to convince him and looked up at him just to see him trying to keep a straight face while tears filled his eyes. โ€œNo!โ€
โ€œGyeong-su, stay where you are!โ€ You heard On-jo say from behind you which brought your attention back to the group as Gyeong-su had rushed forward but everyone stepped back into a corner to try and avoid him like the plague. โ€œStay back!โ€
โ€œI swear, Iโ€™m fucking not!โ€ Gyeong-su begged and your heart broke at hearing the confidence in his words faltering.
โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Gyeong-su. Please, stay back.โ€
You watched as the remaining bit of hope in Gyeong-suโ€™s eyes vanished like a flame being doused by water. โ€œIโ€™ve turned, right?โ€ He asked, his voice quivering. โ€œCheong-san, what do I do?โ€ He begged for guidance that none of you could provide, especially not Cheong-san who was dealing with the fact that his lifelong best friend was about to die at the hands of a virus that turned the kindest of souls into a flesh eating monster.
โ€œNo, no. This doesnโ€™t make any sense. Why would youโ€ฆโ€ He started, just as confused and in denial as you were when On-jo came up from behind him and tried to pull him away.
โ€œCheong-sanโ€ฆ!โ€ She begged but he just yanked his hand back.
โ€œLet go!โ€ His voice broke as he was finally coming to terms with what was written in blood red ink in front of him. โ€œThis cannot be true. Why would you suddenlyโ€ฆ?โ€ He shook his head, false certainty refilling his voice as he stepped towards his friend. โ€œNo, no. Gyeong-su you werenโ€™t-โ€
โ€œStep away. Donโ€™t come any closer!โ€ Gyeong-su yelled as he ran backwards in an attempt to put distance between his friend and himself. You stopped struggling against Su-hyeokโ€™s hold a while ago and just let him hug you to his chest while you watched in shock.
โ€œB-but, you were fine. Gyeong-su, you were fine!โ€ You tried to convince him and yourself when suddenly his neck cracked to the side.
Na-yeon looked around frantically as everyone stood there in shock as their friend turned right before their eyes. โ€œHey! What are you doing?โ€ She sputtered out. โ€œWe need to kick him out! Weโ€™re all gonna die!โ€ She screamed and you suddenly found the voice youโ€™d lost before.
โ€œShut up! He-โ€ your voice dropped from its screaming tone to one barely above being completely silent. โ€œHe just needs a tissue.โ€
โ€œW-whatโ€™s happeningโ€ฆ? Fuck!โ€ You could hear Gyeong-su desperately get out as he gripped his head like it was pounding.
Na-yeon ran over to the door and yanked the umbrella away that was blocking it from being opened. โ€œGet out. I said, get out!โ€
โ€œShut the fuck up!โ€ He screamed before discovering a newfound determination within himself. โ€œIโ€™ll leave by myself! Iโ€™ll leave. Iโ€™ll go on my own!โ€ He started sobbing. โ€œWhy would I bite you? Weโ€™re supposed to be fucking friends. If Iโ€ฆ If I leave, it will be better for everyone.โ€
Every step he took towards the door you could feel more of your hope for him to be okay being lost.
โ€œGyeong-su,โ€ Ms. Park spoke up and you looked over to see she had walked forward to the front of the group to speak to him directly. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you just go into the recording room until we can figure out-โ€
Na-yeon interrupted her before she could finish. โ€œIf he stays in here heโ€™s going to kill us all!โ€
โ€œNa-yeon!โ€ Your teacher screamed at her.
โ€œIโ€™m just trying to stay alive,โ€ she whimpered out.
โ€œIโ€™ll leave. Iโ€™ll get out of here on my own,โ€ Gyeong-su grunted out while breathing heavily and staggering towards the door, using the table and chair on his way to support him. He turned to look at everyone around him but his gaze stopped on your shocked one for a moment. โ€œDonโ€™t worry,โ€ he started sobbing more and your vision started to get blurry with unshed tears. โ€œIโ€™ll get out of here.โ€
โ€œGyeong-su!โ€ Cheong-san begged as his own eyes filled with tears that had yet to stain his cheeks. His lips quivered as he tried to remain strong in front of the group.
โ€œItโ€™s okay. Thank you for everything. Stay alive.โ€
Right as he tried to open the door to leave, he turned around and started looking at all of you in terror while thrashing around and mumbling things under his breath before his body contorted in strange directions, his bones creaking and breaking until he stood up and let out an unnatural roar and growled at all of you. Dae-su started walking towards him and both you and Su-hyeok tried to grab his arm to pull him back, knowing your friend was gone, until he shook you off and rushed forward when Gyeong-suโ€™s empty shell of a body charged at the group standing by the speakers. He threw him against the table in an attempt to save himself as well as his classmates. Just as the monster who you briefly viewed as your friend was about to attack again, the sound of a familiar tune filled the air.
While everyone was focused on the fight, Cheong-san had managed to raise himself onto the window and grabbed a hold of the rope, hanging off the side of the building with only that to support him. He sang their tune, the tune of Auld Lang Syne, and the body of his old friend came rushing toward him before Cheong-san jumped out of the way just in time.
The group had sat in shock for a while until some started to cry. Cheong-san had gone into the recording room and threw the table to the ground in a fit of emotional turmoil. On-jo had walked up to the door for a moment before deciding to walk back and to just give him space.
A gut feeling told you space was the last thing he needed right now.
You walked away from the spot you had been leaning against the wall with Su-hyeok. You had been comforting him on the loss of his friend as you knew he was grieving right now and didnโ€™t want to focus on your own pain. He and Dae-su had hugged and were currently exchanging tissues.
That was what you had learned to do the best. Block out the pain. Be the emotionless girl everyone knew and few loved.
You walked over to the recording studioโ€™s door before taking a deep breath and walking in. You took slow steps as you entered and saw Cheong-san sitting right underneath the large window on the wall of the door. Heโ€™d been crying until you walked in, that much was clear by his red eyes, glistening cheeks, and sniffles. Heโ€™d wiped them away and turned to look in the other direction of you. You walked over to him and sat next to him against the wall. You both sat in silence for a few moments before he spoke.
โ€œIโ€™m fine, if thatโ€™s why youโ€™re here. You can leave now,โ€ he spoke rather harshly but this time it didnโ€™t affect you as you knew he was on stage 2 of grief.
Anger.
โ€œGo,โ€ he told you, his voice breaking at the end and he pointed towards the door where you came from but you just looked at his hand before looking up to him.
You sighed and felt your nose and eyes stinging but pushed it down.
โ€œYou donโ€™t have to be strong with me, you know?โ€ He was taken aback by your words and looked visibly confused. You sighed before looking down at your fingers where they were playing with the hem of your vest. โ€œI know none of you like me, and most of you think Iโ€™m like my brother,โ€ you took a deep breath before you built the courage to look back into his eyes which looked even more astonished than before. โ€œBut in the short amount of time that I spent with Gyeong-su in this recording studio,โ€ you gestured to the mess in front of you as you looked at the book and string Gyeong-su had been playing with before everything went down, now places in the corner of the room. โ€œIโ€™d like to believe I was able to call him my friend, and Iโ€™d like to be able to call you one too,โ€ you looked back up at him once again to see tears had once again gathered along his waterline and he was looking at you with his lips quivering as he still tried to hold back his emotions. โ€œSo Iโ€™ll say it again,โ€ you grabbed his hand from where it was resting on his knee and gave it a friendly and comforting squeeze. โ€œYou donโ€™t have to be strong with me, Cheong-san.โ€
There were a few moments where the two of you sat there and stared into each otherโ€™s eyes before a teardrop streaked down his cheek. Another followed after that one, and then another, and then another, until he had started sobbing and you brought him into a hug while hiding your own tears which slipped onto his shirt. You didnโ€™t say anything, you couldnโ€™t even try to think of something to say in a situation as bizarre as this one. You just held him in his time of grief.
After a few minutes when Cheong-san had calmed down, he wiped his eyes with his sleeve and pulled away from you. Standing up, he lowered a hand down to you so he could help you up and you gave him a small smile as you accepted it.
The two of you walked out and Cheong-san gave you a smile before walking over to lean against the window, looking out onto the field. This time you let him be alone as you walked over to sit down next to Su-hyeok who was on the ground. You mirrored his position with your legs bent and your arms resting on your knees. Your shoulders were grazing ever so slightly and he leaned over to bump into your shoulder ever so gently. You looked over to him and he smiled at you. You couldnโ€™t handle the softness in his gaze so you blushed and looked away, knocking your own shoulder into his as he laughed lightly.
โ€œThat asshole,โ€ you heard Dae-su sob after a little while when the grieving atmosphere set in again. โ€œGyeong-su, why did you have to turn?โ€
Na-yeon opened her mouth and you just knew what she was going to say next would piss you off. โ€œI told you all. He was infected.โ€
โ€œWell, are you happy now?โ€ Dae-su said as he looked at her in despair, you quickly stood up and put a hand on his shoulder, squeezing lightly. He looked back at you and had a bit of a shocked look which you internally rolled your eyes at but stopped when he put one of his hands on top of the one you had resting on his shoulder. You smiled softly but it fell immediately when Na-yeon started talking again.
โ€œYou were all wrong. Only I was right. What would you even do without me?โ€ Your head snapped over to her.
โ€œNa-yeon. If you know whatโ€™s good for you, youโ€™ll shut up and let us mourn the loss of our friend. Donโ€™t be heartless on top of being a bitch,โ€ you told her and just as you looked back at Dae-su, you saw her roll her eyes and scoff.
Just as you were about to talk again, Nam-ra started speaking. โ€œHey,โ€ she paused and you looked over at her. โ€œMaybe you did it.โ€
โ€œWhat?โ€ Na-yeon questioned her in an annoyed tone.
Nam-ra grabbed everyoneโ€™s attention as she walked over until she was standing right in front of Na-yeonโ€™s sitting form.
โ€œI saw everythingโ€ฆ Na-yeon,โ€ Nam-ra told her, accusing her of something that had yet to be revealed.
Na-yeon stood up to be face to face with the class president. โ€œWhat? What did you see?โ€ She asked and seemed to get on the defensive quickly which had suspicion rising in your gut.
โ€œYou are the one who did it,โ€ Nam-ra revealed, yet everyone was still confused.
โ€œWho did what? I didnโ€™t do anything to Gyeong-su,โ€ she defended.
โ€œI didnโ€™t say anything about Gyeong-su,โ€ Nam-ra told her, which kind of confused you.
Itโ€™s kind of inferred because we were talking about his death less than a minute ago, but okay.
โ€œKnock it off!โ€ Na-yeon told her, raising her voice a little.
โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€ Wu-jin asked as Su-hyeok and Cheong-san - who were both minding their business - turned to look at the scene.
โ€œI didnโ€™t do anything,โ€ Na-yeon insisted.
โ€œWhile we were all watching Gyeong-su, you were in the back alone,โ€ your friend explained, then turned and pointed at the broken mop that laid against one of the cabinets in the room. โ€œYou wiped that blood with your handkerchief.โ€
She hesitated before replying in a shaky and slightly fearful voice. โ€œNo, I didnโ€™t.โ€
โ€œYou wiped that on the scratch on Gyeong-suโ€™s hand.โ€
At Nam-raโ€™s explanation, everyone had a shocked look on their faces, unable to comprehend that their classmate was the cause of their friendโ€™s death. Even you had nothing to say and your hand went limp on Dae-suโ€™s shoulder, only being held there by his own, which tightened on yours.
โ€œI did not,โ€ Na-yeon tried again to defend herself but it was getting less and less convincing as Nam-ra was insistent on proving her to be the murderer of Gyeong-su. The innocent boy who was everything good yet died for nothing.
โ€œItโ€™s in your pocket,โ€ the other girl voiced.
โ€œSo what?โ€
โ€œTake it out.โ€
โ€œNo.โ€
โ€œIf youโ€™re so innocent youโ€™d take it out and show us,โ€ you sneered at her and your hand closed into a fist while tightly gripping the fabric of Dae-suโ€™s vest.
โ€œI said no,โ€ she insisted while looking at you and slapping away Nam-raโ€™s extended hand. You glared and she visibly shrunk in on herself.
โ€œShould I take it out?โ€ Nam-ra paused for a split second before reaching for Na-yeonโ€™s pocket until the girl pushed her hand away and slapped her face, most likely a lot softer than she intended to.
โ€œFuck you! Who the hell do you think you are? Huh? Class president?โ€ She mocked before Nam-ra sent a hard slap across her face and her head snapped to the side.
โ€œYou never treated me like president.โ€
Despite the situation at hand, you smirked slightly as you saw your best friend standing up for herself and just being a complete badass. You let go of Dae-suโ€™s shoulder and went to lean against the table beside where he sat.
โ€œNam-ra, thatโ€™s enough!โ€ Ms. Park exclaimed as she sped-walked up to the two girls to break up the argument. She looked back and forth across the floor as she tried to figure out what to say before continuing. โ€œNam-ra, do you realize what youโ€™re saying right now? If that is true, it means Na-yeon killed Gyeong-su.โ€
โ€œItโ€™s true. Na-yeon did it,โ€ the girl confirmed. You looked over at Cheong-san as he watched. His eyes were filled with so many conflicting emotions: anger, sadness, betrayal, remorse. โ€œShe killed him.โ€
Na-yeon scoffed and rolled her eyes before she reached her hand into her pocket. โ€œYou fucking cunt,โ€ she exclaimed angrily before throwing the handkerchief in Nam-raโ€™s face. Dae-su had to grab ahold of your sleeve to keep you from rushing forward. โ€œThere. Happy?โ€
Nam-ra, who seemed unaffected by Na-yeonโ€™s treatment, reached down to pick up the cloth from the floor and inspect it. โ€œThis is blood.โ€
โ€œI wiped Gyeong-suโ€™s hand,โ€ she claimed and you scowled as you could see the cloth.
โ€œThis is his blood?โ€
โ€œYou canโ€™t tell?โ€
โ€œIf it was his fucking blood there wouldnโ€™t be that much of it, you cunt. Heโ€™d stopped bleeding 10 minutes into staying in the studio room,โ€ you told her and her eyes flashed with fear but her expression remained the same.
โ€œThen put it on your wound,โ€ Nam-ra told her in an attempt to show either her innocence or her guiltiness. โ€œWipe yourself with it if youโ€™re so confident.โ€
You could see her searching for an answer. โ€œLike his blood is so clean? He was a zombie.โ€
Nam-ra threw the cloth to the floor and stepped closer to her offensively. โ€œHe was just fine until you infected him with your handkerchief.โ€
โ€œNa-yeonโ€ฆ you-โ€ Cheong-san started and started marching towards Na-yeon until Su-hyeok held him back.
โ€œDamn it! It wasnโ€™t me!โ€ She screamed while crouching down and picking up the handkerchief, hovering it above her wound as she looked around for someone to tell her to stop, that they believed her, anything for her to not do it.
Ms. Park, ever the mediator, ran up to her and grabbed her wrist, pulling her hand and the handkerchief away from her scrape, trying to pull it from her hands but Na-yeon resisted. โ€œDonโ€™t do it. Stop it.โ€
โ€œLet go,โ€ she whimpered as the teacher tried to yank it from her hands.
โ€œI said to stop it. Give it to me.โ€
โ€œLeave me alone! Fuck!โ€ Na-yeon screamed while breathing heavily. She let go of the handkerchief and stood up with teary eyes. She looked across the room at everyone, โ€œI should just die too then, huh? Thatโ€™s what you want, isnโ€™t it?โ€ Nobody answered and so she sighed, looking away before turning back. โ€œWhy is Gyeong-su better than me? That dirty welfie pushed me,โ€ she whimpered.
โ€œYou little cheat!โ€ You yelled at her while trying to rush forward but Dae-su was still holding onto your sleeve. Su-hyeok abandoned his spot as the one to hold back Cheong-san to wrap his arms around you, restricting any movement of your arms while you struggled and kicked your feet.
โ€œNa-yeon,โ€ Park said after a while of silence, โ€œYou didnโ€™tโ€ฆโ€
โ€œSo you did do it,โ€ Cheong-san spoke, devastated, until he raised his voice to yell at her. Dae-su rushed forward to hold him back. โ€œHow could you fucking-โ€
โ€œI didnโ€™t kill him, okay?โ€ She insisted and you could hear your heart pounding in your ears with rage. Rage and loss. โ€œGyeong-su fell, but he got up and ran. Heโ€™s still alive. He didnโ€™t die, he just turned.โ€
โ€œYou mother fucker! Theyโ€™re the exact same fucking thing!โ€ You yelled out at the same time On-jo spoke.
โ€œAre you kidding me right now?โ€
โ€œStop ganging up on me!โ€ She whined and threw her hands around like a toddler having a tantrum. โ€œWhen I said he smelled, you all laughed. You all made fun of him too. Donโ€™t try to act all innocent now.โ€
You thrashed around harder as you felt your eyes burning and your cheeks wet and you finally realized you were crying.
It had been a while since youโ€™d done that.
Dae-su lost his grip on Cheong-san and he ran towards Na-yeon, Su-hyeok unable to stop him because of you in his arms already.
The boy pushed the girl to the ground and breathed heavily. โ€œHow could you kill him?โ€ He screamed while Ms. Park told him to stop it. Na-yeon kept her head down.
โ€œYouโ€™reโ€ฆ a murderer.โ€
Her head lifted and you saw tears falling down her face but you had no sympathy at all.
โ€œI have no friends at all,โ€ she whimpered out.
โ€œI wondering fucking why,โ€ you growled.
โ€œI donโ€™t need any of you. Fuck you,โ€ she then stood up and shakily walked out of the room, Wu-jin rushing after her just as the door closed and Ms. Park moved to stop him.
โ€œListen,โ€ she started and you were finally released from Su-hyeokโ€™s grip after you stopped struggling. โ€œNo matter what happens, you stay alive. Also, you must never take a life. If you cause someone else to die, life becomes meaningless.โ€
She looked at you all with a remorseful and fond gaze and you were sure you knew what she was about to do. โ€œAll right?โ€
โ€œMs. Park?โ€ You whispered shakily and she looked at you with a small smile before turning and running out the room, rushing after Na-yeon.
โ€œMs. Park! Wait!โ€ Dae-su yelled and ran towards the door and Wu-jin held him back to the best of his ability.
โ€œDae-su, donโ€™t go!โ€ he begged.
You had never felt so helpless. Your feet seemed to be glued to the floor and your eyes stuck to the door where she had stood only moments ago.
Dae-su started sobbing into Wu-jinโ€™s shoulder and your heart broke for him.
โ€œFuck!โ€ You heard Cheong-san scream followed by the banging of his fist against a computer. You didnโ€™t have the energy to stop him, even though you knew if he did it too much he could seriously injure his hand.
You were sitting in the corner next to Su-hyeok who had an arm wrapped around your shoulder, pulling you into his chest as you were too much in shock to cry; again. You saw On-jo walk up to Cheong-san as he was staring out the window but you couldnโ€™t hear their hushed whispers.
โ€œI feel like itโ€™s my fault,โ€ you said suddenly, only a breath above a whisper. Su-hyeok looked down at you in surprise and confusion.
โ€œWhatโ€™s your fault?โ€
โ€œGyeong-su.โ€
He sat up from his leaning position against the wall, bringing you with him, and looked you in the eyes. โ€œHow is it your fault? You didnโ€™t do anything!โ€ He tried to convince you, still whispering so the others wouldnโ€™t butt their way into your business .
You let out a sad laugh as you felt your nose burning. โ€œExactly. I didnโ€™t fucking do anything,โ€ you wiped your nose slightly with the back of your hand to subside the sting. โ€œI didnโ€™t notice what she was doing. If I only noticed and was a little more attentive then Gyeong-su would be alive! Itโ€™s my fau-โ€
โ€œNo,โ€ Su-hyeok insisted as he brought your head back into his chest to keep the guilty thoughts at bay. His heartbeat worked just enough for your soul to take a breath. โ€œNo, (Y/n). Itโ€™s not your fault. How could you have possibly known what she was going to do. You didnโ€™t need to be attentive at that moment because it was someone who was supposed to be loyal to the group and not fucking kill someone. That is not your fault. Thinking like that will just drive you insane.โ€
At his words, a small sob escaped your lips and your body started to shake with your silent tears as he trailed his hand up and down your back. His lips were pressed against the crown of your head as he whispered the reassurances that you were needing.
After you calmed down and wiped away the tears on your face with your sleeve, you sat up and gave Su-hyeok a grateful smile.
โ€œThank you,โ€ you breathed.
โ€œYou donโ€™t need to thank me.โ€
It was then you noticed how close the two of you were, faces only inches apart and you could see his eyes travel from your own down to your lips a few times. You backed away with your cheeks flushed and gave him a small smile. He seemed delighted with the effect he had on you and that made your cheeks burn even hotter.
โ€œIโ€™m going to go sit by Nam-ra, I havenโ€™t really spoken to her much in the past day,โ€ you told him, avoiding eye contact as you stood up.
โ€œOkay,โ€ he smiled and got up himself before winking at you and walking over to lean against the counter where Wu-jin was sitting. You took a breath to cool your cheeks and calm your nerves before going over to sit next to Nam-ra.
โ€œHey there, prez,โ€ you greeted and she met you with a cheeky grin.
She nudged you in the side. โ€œHey there, lovergirl. Howโ€™s it like in paradise, hm?โ€ She teased in a whispered voice and you covered your face with your hands.
โ€œStop that, weโ€™re just friends!โ€ You whined softly and she giggled for a moment until her face slowly fell back into a frown.
You didnโ€™t want to ask if she was okay because you knew the answer would be no. Nobody was okay right now, Nam-ra wasnโ€™t any different. Instead, you just grabbed her hand and held it in your own affectionately while she leaned her head on your shoulder.
You stayed like that for a while until Cheong-san spoke up and broke the silence. โ€œI didnโ€™t hear anything at all. I just couldnโ€™t hear anything.โ€
โ€œLike what?โ€ Su-hyeok asked but Cheong-san didnโ€™t lift his gaze from where he stared at the floor.
โ€œI mean after Na-yeon went out and then Ms. Park went after her. I didnโ€™t hear anything after that.โ€
โ€œYou mean, screaming?โ€ Su-hyeok asked and Cheong-san finally looked up at his friend to confirm.
โ€œYeah.โ€
โ€œMaybe they didnโ€™t die, then. They wouldnโ€™t have been quiet if zombies were biting them,โ€ Dae-su spoke his thoughts. โ€œThey must be alive.โ€
You let out a hum of acknowledgment while everyone else stayed silent and he huffed in annoyance, feeling left out. โ€œWhy wonโ€™t you respond? No one answers me. Iโ€™m always talking to myself,โ€ he looked down and played with his tie. You couldnโ€™t help feeling bad even though you were the only one to acknowledge his thoughts, albeit with only a hum.
Just as you were about to say something, On-jo beat you to the punch. โ€œI think youโ€™re right.โ€
โ€œForget it,โ€ Dae-su waved her off with an eye roll but she continued.
โ€œI didnโ€™t hear anything either.โ€
โ€œMe neither,โ€ Hyo-ryung threw in her own thoughts. โ€œ I was scared because I didnโ€™t know how Iโ€™d feel if I heard them screaming, but I didnโ€™t hear anything.โ€
โ€œCome to think of it, neither did I,โ€ Joon-yeong added.
โ€œThen Iโ€™m right. Theyโ€™re alive, right?โ€ Dae-su asked and Joon-yeong nodded in confirmation.
โ€œShould she be alive?โ€ Ji-min asked angrily and you turned slightly to look at her, Nam-ra still resting her head on your shoulder, unmoving.
โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€ Joon-yeong asked.
โ€œSheโ€™s a murderer. She killed Gyeong-su and walked out of here on her own. Is it even right for her to be alive?โ€ She asked angrily, using rage as a coping mechanism for everything that was happening. โ€œArenโ€™t you all being fake?โ€
โ€œWhat about Ms. Park? Should she have died too?โ€ Wu-jin questioned and Ji-min was quick to reply.
โ€œIs that our fault?โ€
โ€œEither way, weโ€™re responsible for what happened,โ€ he argued.
โ€œWhy is that? What did we do wrong?โ€ She asked and you turned back to looking at your hands which were interlocked with Nam-raโ€™s, unable to look at the emotion in Ji-minโ€™s eyes anymore. โ€œNa-yeon killed someone, then played the victim, and chose to leave on her own. All because we didnโ€™t listen to her,โ€ She defended her own argument and Wu-jin remained silent. โ€œIf no oneโ€™s on your side, is it okay to kill?โ€ Everyone stayed silent as they churned her question over in their brains. โ€œMs. Park acted like we were wrong. We didnโ€™t tell Na-yeon to go out there. We didnโ€™t tell Ms. Park to go out there, either. Why should we feel bad? What the hell did we do wrong?โ€ Hyo-ryung leaned over to hug Ji-min and comfort her but the hand she placed on her shoulder was shoved off.
You noticed On-jo looking down at the table and a teardrop falling down her cheek and you reached over to grab onto her hand with your free one, squeezing gently. Surprisingly, she didnโ€™t look shocked by your movements or the fact that you would do something like this, she just gave you a watery smile and sniffed before slightly wiping her nose on the sleeve of her slightly bloodied jacket.
Speaking of jackets, you realized you still didnโ€™t have your own after using it to cover up Hyeon-ju when she came into the classroom. Although it wasnโ€™t cold right now, you were sure it would be later, especially with the broken-open window.
โ€œHey,โ€ Su-hyeok spoke up and interrupted everyoneโ€™s thoughts. โ€œI feel weird saying this, but-โ€
He was interrupted when Wu-jin smacked his stomach. โ€œDonโ€™t say it.โ€
Su-hyeok groaned and took a strange moment of silence before continuing with what he was going to say. โ€œDoes anyone else have to go to the bathroom by any chance?โ€ Nobody responded. โ€œAm I the only one?โ€
Dae-su raised his hand slightly. โ€œI do.โ€
โ€œWe have to go, too, actually. But we canโ€™t go out,โ€ Hyo-ryung spoke on behalf of her and Ji-min.
โ€œI also have to go,โ€ you added in and everyoneโ€™s head snapped towards you, making you shrink back in on yourself and press your cheek against the crown of Nam-raโ€™s head in embarrassment.
Joon-yeong sighed before pressing his forehead against the table.
โ€œIโ€™ve had to poop for a while,โ€ Dae-su spoke up again and you held back the smile that threatened to take over your face.
โ€œDudeโ€ฆ thatโ€™sโ€ฆ ew,โ€ Wu-jin told him as he threw a pencil at him which was placed near his sitting spot.
โ€œWhy are you blaming me for this? Su-hyeokโ€™s the one who brought it up. Poopings not a crime.โ€
โ€œItโ€™s not a crime, but-โ€ Wu-jin told him with an amused face.
โ€œBut what? Donโ€™t you need to go?โ€
โ€œYes, I do. Not poop, but, you knowโ€ฆโ€ He informed.
โ€œWhat about you?โ€ Dae-su asked Cheong-san as he pointed at him, pleading for anyone to be on his side.
โ€œI donโ€™tโ€ฆ Pooping? No.โ€
He turned to Hyo-ryung. โ€œDonโ€™t you need to go?โ€
โ€œWhy are you asking me?โ€ She whined.
โ€œWhy are you getting annoyed?โ€ He shot back.
โ€œWhat do you want from us? We canโ€™t go out, anyways.โ€
Dae-su sighed deeply before his eyes caught on yours and he shot up straight. โ€œ(Y/n)!โ€
You smiled, amused, and Dae-su looked ecstatic at your expression. โ€œYes, Dae-su?โ€
โ€œDo you need to go? Do you need to poop?โ€ He asked, practically begging you to agree.
Your head tilted a bit as you looked up while thinking. โ€œYes,โ€ you finally replied.
His hands shot up in victory. โ€œReally?โ€
โ€œNo,โ€ you laughed and he deflated like a balloon back into his seat with a playful glare. โ€œI do have to go though.โ€
He sighed out again before he looked at the window. โ€œI have an idea.โ€
You sighed and slapped your forehead, knowing exactly where he was going with this and not liking it one bit.
Dae-su walked up to the window, leaning against it slightly. โ€œFirst, the girls and the guys will take turns.โ€
โ€œWhere?โ€ Hyo-ryung asked, not understanding the context clues or deliberately being ignorant in hopes of him choosing a different answer.
He looked at her before gesturing to the window in front of him. โ€œHere.โ€
She scoffed. โ€œYouโ€™re crazy.โ€
โ€œStop it, man,โ€ Cheong-san said and rolled his eyes at Dae-suโ€™s strange suggestion.
โ€œWhy?โ€ The boy asked with a slight whine. โ€œThe girls can wait in the other room, and the guys can just pee out the window.โ€
โ€œWhat aboutโ€ฆ poop?โ€ Wu-jin and you groaned out while shrinking in on yourself as you were sure you knew exactly what his idea would be.
He pointed at Wu-jin before looking back at the window. โ€œPoop. Wellโ€ฆโ€ He was silent for a moment as he thought before he slapped the frame in realization. โ€œYou can take your pants off and hang out the window,โ€ he explained and climbed up the window so his butt was hanging off on one side while he held onto the window frame. โ€œLike this.โ€
You couldnโ€™t help yourself from snorting at his demonstration. โ€œOutside!โ€ He went on as you hid your smiling face underneath the collar of your green sweater. He stepped down from the window. โ€œLike youโ€™re taking a dump off of a cliff,โ€ he then squatted down before continuing. โ€œLike this.โ€
โ€œWhat reaction is he hoping for?โ€ You heard Wu-jin whisper before you spoke yourself.
โ€œYou seem to know a lot about this, Dae-su,โ€ you teased. โ€œIโ€™m guessing youโ€™ve had a lot of experience with pooping off of cliffs.โ€
He looked at you with an unamused look and you couldnโ€™t help yourself from bursting out into laughter that everyone else joined in on as Dae-su rolled his eyes in annoyance. Nam-ra lifted her head from your shoulder and hid her smile behind her hand.
โ€œIโ€™m being serious!โ€ He exclaimed over the laughter.
โ€œStop being ridiculous,โ€ Hyo-ryung told him with an eyeroll after she calmed down.
โ€œBut someone has to hold you, so you donโ€™t fall!โ€ He quickly added when he saw a break in the giggles.
โ€œHow are you going to wipe your butt?โ€ Joon-yeong asked him.
โ€œWell, someone else should.โ€
โ€œWhat is he saying?โ€ Hyo-ryung facepalmed.
โ€œIdiot.โ€
โ€œLetโ€™s just hold it,โ€ Ju-min told everyone. โ€œIf the rescuers come-โ€
โ€œItโ€™ll take a while for them to get here,โ€ On-jo looked at her as she interrupted her before looking down at her hands woefully. โ€œIt may be the same outside of the school.โ€
Nobody moved. Nobody spoke. The joking and laughter filled atmosphere was replaced with the sullen one as everyone thought of the situation they were still in.
โ€œI donโ€™t know how long weโ€™ll be stuck here, but my dad always told me to separate the bathroom from where you sleep if you find yourself stranded,โ€ On-jo continued, sounding like she had an idea.
โ€œWhat do you suggest?โ€ You implored.
โ€œWe create a makeshift bathroom for the time being,โ€ she said confidently.
โ€œWhere will we create a bathroom and how?โ€ Ji-min inquired, confused.
โ€œRight there,โ€ On-jo pointed to the recording booth and everyone turned to look.
โ€œThatโ€™s smart, if we do some things to make it more private it could be the perfect place to make one. Good thinking,โ€ you praised her and she blushed slightly as she looked back down to her hands while a small smile graced her features. You stood up with a slight hop before turning to On-jo and clapping your hands together. โ€œOkay, boss lady! First order of motion?โ€
She tried to hide her smile but failed as a small laugh escaped her. She stood up herself and turned to look at the group of girls. โ€œNam-ra and you guys, try to look for something to cover the window.โ€
They nodded before scattering across the room to find things they could use.
โ€œCheong-san and Joon-yeong,โ€ both boys turned to her at their names being called. โ€œMake something that can absorb urine and feces to use as a toilet,โ€ they nodded and got to work. โ€œAnd then the rest of youโ€ฆโ€ she paused, knowing they needed something else but not sure what it was.
โ€œA screen?โ€ You suggested and she snapped in your direction in appreciation.
โ€œYes! A screen.โ€
โ€œA screen?โ€ Wu-jin asked to confirm in slight confusion and On-jo nodded.
โ€œYes, a screen to block.โ€
Wu-jin, Su-hyeok, and you walked into the recording booth and looked around. The both of them seemed stuck on what to use but you saw something immediately.
You walked over to where a few filing cabinets were and started moving one of them so it was positioned parallel to the wall with the window. Going over to start moving the second one, Su-hyeok realized you had been doing the work while they were just watching. He slapped Wu-jinโ€™s chest before jogging over to you with a smile.
โ€œHow about you two move that one,โ€ you pointed over to another filing cabinet on the other side of the room. โ€œAnd Iโ€™ll move this one so they can be โ€˜wallsโ€™ on each side of that one,โ€ you then pointed to the previous filing cabinet you had moved which was across from the window.
Su-hyeok frowned before moving over to where you were and going on the other side of the filing cabinet you were about to move. You reached over to smack the back of his head. โ€œI donโ€™t need help, idiot. Go help Wu-jin,โ€ you pointed to where Wu-jin was struggling to move the filing cabinet on his own despite trying to seem like he wasnโ€™t. Su-hyeok turned and rubbed his head where you smacked him before you could see the smile and blush that blessed his cheeks. He mentally slapped himself.
All she did was slap me on the head and call me an idiot, why the fuck am I smiling?
You laughed as you watched him walk away and he blushed harder at the sound of it.
Ohโ€ฆ thatโ€™s why.
After moving the two filing cabinets, you moving yours comically faster than the two boys did and rolling your eyes before helping them, you walked out of the room to see Dae-su laying his head down on the table. Cheong-san and Joon-yeong were almost done with what you assumed was the makeshift bathroom.
You walked over to them and rested a hand on Joon-yeongโ€™s shoulder as you leaned over to look at the basket. โ€œIs this the homemade toilet?โ€
Joon-yeong jumped at first before relaxing. โ€œYeah, weโ€™re trying to figure something out for where to sit, though. With just this, everyone would probably just have to hover above it.โ€
You nodded and looked around for a second before something caught your eye and both of them lit up. You practically skipped over to the seat next to Dae-su and grabbed his neck pillow from where it was resting and walked back over to the two boys.
โ€œPut this on top, I think this might be the best option weโ€™ll have,โ€ you suggested and placed the pillow on top of the rags in the basket.
โ€œDae-su's got a big butt, so let'sโ€ฆโ€ he said as he opened up the button that held the two ends of the pillow together and spread it a bit.
โ€œPerfect!โ€ you smiled and opened the recording boothโ€™s door for the two of them as they brought the basket inside. Walking over to where Nam-ra, On-jo, and the rest of them had set up a little circle of chairs, you sat in the one next to where Nam-ra was standing just as everyone was rushed out of the room by Su-hyeok who slammed the door harder than he probably intended to. You laughed.
โ€œDo you want to sit down? I can pull up another chair,โ€ you suggested to your best friend but she just politely shook her head with a smile. You held your hands up in mock surrender. โ€œOkay, if you say so.โ€
After a little while, it was your turn and you used it quickly before grabbing a hand sanitizer bottle from one of the cabinets and pumping a little into your hand.
โ€œOh, thank god!โ€ You heard and turned around to see On-jo, followed by Hyo-ryung, beside you. โ€œI was worried about that. Even if weโ€™re in a zombie apocalypse, I donโ€™t really want to go to the bathroom and not wash my hands,โ€ the bob hair cutted girl said in relief before holding her hand out. You put some in her hand and then some in On-joโ€™s as well and both grinned at you gratefully.
The bottle got passed around as everyone took a little and then started chatting.
โ€œAt least there are cops and soldiers out there, right?โ€ Hyo-ryung questioned hopefully.
โ€œBut if you watch the movies, they canโ€™t do anything either, right?โ€ Wu-jin answered with his own question.
โ€œIโ€™m hoping that this situation will be different from the movies, that this thing will have a cure and everyone outside of the school is doing just fine,โ€ you muttered with slight optimism. Hyo-ryung smiled at you and grabbed your hand.
โ€œExactly, and they always save everyone in the end.โ€
The door slammed shut and you noticed Joon-yeong, who had been standing outside of the door, waiting for his turn, had gone inside and Dae-su was standing on the other side with the tissue box you all had designated at the toilet paper in his hand.
Everyoneโ€™s face had turned sour as the smell of the recording booth flooded out with the small time the door was open.
โ€œShit!โ€ Su-hyeok exclaimed as you all plugged your nose or wafted away the stench with your hand. โ€œWhy donโ€™t you just stay inside?โ€
โ€œDoes it smell?โ€ Dae-su asked cluelessly.
The door to the studio opened again before slamming as Joon-yeong came running out. โ€œS-shit.โ€
โ€œWhat?โ€ Dae-su asked again as Joon-yeong ran towards the window to get some fresh air. โ€œStop being so dramatic. It doesn't smell at all.
โ€œOh, it does more than just smell. Iโ€™m pretty sure the zombies will bust down the door just because of that,โ€ you joked and grabbed a piece of paper from behind you to use as a fan and blow away the air.
โ€œSit somewhere else,โ€ Hyo-ryung demanded as Dae-su sat in the seat next to her but he just ignored her and she rolled her eyes.
You looked up at Nam-ra and saw that she was just staring off blankly out the window. โ€œWhatโ€™s up? What are you looking at?โ€ You asked her.
She took a breath and hesitated before speaking her mind. โ€œThereโ€™s nobody there. There are no lights on in the stores and apartments out there. They all ran away.โ€
โ€œOr diedโ€ฆโ€ You added depressingly.
โ€œWhat do you mean by that?โ€ On-jo quizzed.
โ€œNo oneโ€™s coming here to save us,โ€ Name-ra stated.
โ€œWhy do you have to be so pessimistic?โ€ Joon-yeong asked as he shifted uncomfortably under the change of tone in the air.
โ€œDonโ€™t you know my mom?โ€ She shifted so she was leaning against the wall with her arms crossed over her chest. โ€œShe wouldโ€™ve torn the school apart looking for me, but she isnโ€™t here yet.โ€
โ€œSo, what do you wanna do?โ€ Ji-min asked in a bitter voice and Nam-ra turned to look at her, annoyed.
When you realized she wasnโ€™t going to reply, you replied on her behalf. โ€œI think sheโ€™s just trying to point out the facts, even if they are depressing,โ€ you looked up at Nam-ra to see if your assumption was correct and she nodded.
Ji-min turned to face you. โ€œWe all know that no oneโ€™s coming. So I think we should just figure out what weโ€™re gonna do next.
โ€œWe have to wait to be rescued,โ€ On-jo vocalized. You all looked to her and you especially knew that she might have the best knowledge of what to do in a situation like this considering she had some information passed down to her from her dad. โ€œWe canโ€™t leave somewhere safe to go somewhere dangerous.โ€
โ€œBut from the place where we are right now, weโ€™re not exactly in a visible spot for someone to see and rescue us from,โ€ you told her, knowing that even if rescuers showed up to save people, they would most likely go to the roof first before anywhere else if at all.
โ€œAnd what if nobody comes?โ€ Nam-ra added on and you nodded.
โ€œWe haven't been waiting that long yet,โ€ the girl insisted as she stared up at her.
โ€œHow long do you think we have to wait? Do you think we should wait until we die?โ€ Nam-ra asked in a slightly snarky tone which you winced at but didnโ€™t make any move to interfere.
โ€œNo,โ€ On-jo clarified. โ€œIโ€™m saying letโ€™s wait as long as we can.โ€
โ€œBut when will we know when we canโ€™t?โ€ You asked and On-jo just looked at you, her mouth opening and closing a few times before she looked down at her lap.
โ€œI donโ€™t knowโ€ฆ but thereโ€™s no way we can go out right now, anyway.โ€
โ€œItโ€™s probably because itโ€™s nighttime. Iโ€™m sure somebody will come in the morning, maybe. There are a lot of choppers flying around,โ€ Su-hyeok pointed out and everyone looked out the window to inspect the sky for a second before leaning back. He let out a sigh. โ€œLetโ€™s just wait until tomorrow, and weโ€™ll see.โ€
Everyone nodded in agreement when Joon-yeong took in a deep breath and ran back into the recording studio while plugging his nose which you and Hyo-ryung slightly giggled at. Su-hyeok looked down with a smile at the sound but you didnโ€™t notice it from how you leaned forward to talk to Hyo-ryung. You also didnโ€™t notice the questioning looks that On-jo passed back and forth between you and Su-hyeok.

changed, for you.
A/N: yโ€™all Iโ€™m sorry Iโ€™ll do the requests in a bit I promise
synopsis: youโ€™ve known Su-hyeok since his bully days and hated him for it, but heโ€™s been trying to change for you to like him a little more.
(a bit angsty and short, non-apocalyptic, rushed and kinda bad)
!not proofread!
CW: bullying
^^^^^^^^^^
God, he was insufferable. He was a total jerk. You saw Su-hyeok on the first day of school. Watching him chase his friends down the hall with a goofy smile on his pretty face almost immediately drew you to him. He seemed nice and charismatic, he looked like someone who could make your day.
And he did make your day, much much worse. Only 3 hours after you saw him for the first time, you find yourself being dragged into the storage room beside the school to be insulted and bullied by a group of guys, one of them being Su-hyeok. You werenโ€™t the type to take it, so you fought back. Kneeing them in the groin, punching their jaws, you got away. These types of things would happen frequently. They saw you as their prey. A trophy to be earned by the hands of aggression. Su-hyeok almost seemed apologetic the first few times, so you tried giving him a chance. Every time you thought you both were getting closer, you found yourself unguarded at the hands of the bullies.
You had enough. You stopped trying with Su-hyeok, and retaliated with the bullies so much they stopped trying to get under your skin. You tried helping others facing the same problem, with your hate for Su-hyeok only growing as you watched him go along with every horrible thing they did.
Little did you know, he felt bad. Those small moments where you showed you were there for him and tried to help him better himself, thought it was obnoxious at first, he grew to heavily appreciate them. Watching as you stood up for yourself and others, he had fallen in love with you.
He observed your nature. What are you like? What do you love, what do you hate? He learned. He changed. Little by little, he started cutting the bullies off. He started helping victims, and doing small helpful tasks for everyone. He wished you would notice it. He hoped you would. But he didnโ€™t expect it. You gave him many chances, he didnโ€™t want you to get hurt giving more.
So until you did notice him, he kept trying to be better. He kept trying to be a person worthy of your love.

The announcement resonates through overhead speakers as you follow On-Jo outside, shadowing her steps to the sound of gravel crunching beneath your boots.
On-Jo stuffs her hands in her thick jacket pockets and stares wistfully at the refuge's chain-linked fence, strewn with satin and silk ribbons where words of remembrance are etched onto its surface. A few months ago, you had tied up four in row, one for I-Sak, Gyeong-Su, Nam-Ra, and another for Cheong-San, but they have long since been swallowed up by other additions on the daily.
Breathing out on a long sigh, a puff of air suspends in front of On-Jo for a few seconds, before it too, disappears like the sudden cold breeze that brushes past.
When did winter arrive without your noticing?
โ€œIโ€™m going to take a little stroll around,โ€ On-Jo says, turning to you. Extending her hand, she opens her palm up and inside rests a dark red ribbon.
Cheong-Sanโ€™s favorite color.
You smile faintly and nod in understanding as she closes her fingers delicately around the satiny fabric, eventually leaving to make her way to the overcrowded barrier.
Diverted, you watch as Mi-Jin stands with a sign hanging proudly over her neck. Peeking, you try to view the lines of text from your perpendicular position to it: High school seniors who suffered the ZOMBIE attack must be given special admissions into colleges.
A middle aged woman ambles up to Mi-Jin amidst some very odd background stares at the blunt plea and pats her on the shoulder. โ€œAigoo,โ€ she drawls out. โ€œMy daughter is a senior too.โ€ You hold back your laughter as she pats Mi-Jin on the cheek, whose face immediately scrunches up in distaste. โ€œYou poor, poor thing.โ€
In Mi-Jin like fashion, she cusses and kicks the ground before shuffling away in the other direction, causing you to giggle, shaking your head at the scene.
Aimlessly, you walk around, finding the grounds teeming with more evacuees than you initially thought. Despite so many people, there was only one person you wanted to see.
Finally catching sight of Su-Hyeok, you soften your steps and stop right by his side. Unaware, he has his eyes closed, face turned up towards the sky as he leans against an unoccupied mounted tent.
Itโ€™s rare for the weather to be anything more than cloudy now that itโ€™s nearing the winter solstice, the sunshine a precious commodity.
You bask in the light, a sign of hope for the people who couldn't wait to escape the darkness altogether.
Fondly, you observe as the morning sunbeam falls on Su-Hyeokโ€™s face and you think maybe, just maybe, youโ€™re a little bit in love with him.
โ€œSu-Hyeok.โ€
His eyes sluggishly flutter open against the sudden onslaught of light, and he raises one hand up to shield against it, craning toward the voice calling out to him, squinting in focus.
When Su-Hyeokโ€™s gaze lands on you, a grin spreads across his face, uncontrollable. He stretches out a hand toward you and pulls you down, making space next to him. He sits as close as possible even though thereโ€™s space to spare.
โ€œWhere have you been? I couldnโ€™t find you all morning.โ€
โ€œI was with On-Jo, but nowadays, I can only seem to bring myself to either see you or her. I want to approach the rest, but I couldnโ€™t. In case it would remind meโ€ฆโ€
You lay your head on his shoulder and he rests his own atop yours softly. โ€œCan you forget if you do so?โ€
Exhaling, you shut your eyes and shift ever closer. โ€œItโ€™d be great if we had a reset button,โ€ you murmur regretfully. โ€œIโ€™d like to forget all this ever happened. If only I could, Iโ€™d like to forget everything.โ€
โ€œEven me?โ€
You straighten your head, lifting it from the crook of Su-Hyeokโ€™s shoulder line and look up, thinking heโ€™s simply joking, but his eyes remain fixated on your face, taking in its every feature tenderly.
โ€œHow could I ever want to forget you?โ€
He draws you in toward him by the back of your head and places a featherlight kiss on your forehead.
โ€œGood,โ€ he teases. โ€œI was starting to think you wanted to replace me.โ€
You laugh, the sound released airy and light for the first time in a long time. โ€œIs that what worries you?โ€
โ€œSometimes, but then I remember youโ€™re stuck with me forever.โ€
You knock your shoulder into his chest playfully. โ€œKeep dreaming.โ€
"Maybe I will,โ€ he whispers longingly, and with the sun shining brilliantly above you, suddenly thereโ€™s a warmth there that canโ€™t be contained.
โ€œYou know,โ€ you begin a bit later. โ€œAfter having snuck out with On-Jo past curfew last night and seeing a flickering glow in the distance, I think someone lit a fire on the schoolโ€™s rooftop.โ€
โ€œThe rooftop? Are you sure?โ€
โ€œI may be mistaken, but thereโ€™s a plaguing sensation that wonโ€™t let me ignore it. Nam-Ra did say that we should light a campfire if we miss one another. On-Jo also plans on returning, tonight."
โ€œIโ€™ll go with you,โ€ Su-Hyeok declares quickly, almost afraid you would reject the idea.
โ€œI know you will.โ€ You smile to yourself. โ€œJustโ€ฆdonโ€™t let the others catch on. It could be dangerous, and Iโ€™d rather not burden them more. Letโ€™s go by ourselves.โ€
You feel Su-Hyeok bobbing his head in agreement against yours. โ€œI wonโ€™t tell a soul.โ€
โ€œDoes this feel like a happy ending for all of us?โ€ you voice out, curious. โ€œFor you?โ€
Su-Hyeok laces your fingers together, hand completely engulfing yours. โ€œI canโ€™t speak for the rest of us, but itโ€™s clear, for me.โ€
โ€œWhat is?โ€
โ€œYouโ€™re my happy ending.โ€
Tumblr media
When night falls, you walk hand in hand with Su-Hyeok to meet up with On-Jo behind the facility. He stuffs your joined hands inside one of his pockets and your heart melts at the sweet gesture.
On the last step however, youโ€™re pulled out of your reverie as you look up, only to be met with the faces of the entire group.
On-Jo stares at you with a cute scowl, attempting to appear angry, arms crossed over her chest. It only serves to makes her look smaller and every bit less intimidating, all bundled up in heavy winter clothes, but sheโ€™d probably kill you if you voiced that out loud.
โ€œI told you not to tell anyone.โ€
You turn to Su-Hyeok and whack him on the chest. โ€œYou agreed on keeping it a secret.โ€
Su-Hyeok turns to Dae-Su, sheepishly avoiding both yours and On-Joโ€™s glares. โ€œYah, what did I tell you?!โ€
You cluck your tongue and Dae-Su whips his head toward Ha-Ri. โ€œNoona, I said this matter was between us.โ€
Ha-Ri shakes her head fervently, jutting a finger toward Mi-Jin who was currently sitting spread eagle and smoking. โ€œThis one said sheโ€™d report to the cops if we didnโ€™t take her. Itโ€™s dangerous to let her loose.โ€
On-Jo snorts incredulously and you look on in disbelief.
How did you all manage to get out alive?
Chucking the cigarette butt to the ground, Mi-Jin snuffs it out with the toe of her shoe. โ€œFuck who told who. I want to do something reckless rather than wasting away here. They wonโ€™t grant me special admission anyhow.โ€
โ€œHow is that remotely related to this?โ€ Dae-Su asks, entirely confused. โ€œWeโ€™ll be locked up for disobeying orders if we get caught and there goes any chances you have at special admissions.โ€
โ€œIโ€™d rather go to jail if I canโ€™t get into college. At least Iโ€™ll be fed and given a place to sleep in,โ€ Mi-Jin grumbles. Noticing how everyoneโ€™s at a loss for words on how to reply, she waves it off indifferently, unable to stand the silence. โ€œWhat, are we going to stand here and gawk at each other all night, orโ€ฆ?โ€
โ€œYouโ€™re seriously going? All of you?โ€ you question disbelievingly.
โ€œEven you three also?โ€ On-Jo adds in, eyeing Wu-Jin, Joon-Yeong, and Hyo-Ryung to the side.
โ€œYou kiddos arenโ€™t the only ones who feel indebted. Weโ€™re all tormented inside, much like you. Being alone doesnโ€™t lessen the survivorโ€™s guilt or make these after-thoughts hurt any less.โ€
The words sink in and you glance to meet eyes with On-Jo, who concedes lightly with a nod.
One by one, you all scale the wall and travel back on the winding path through the woods, helpless against feelings of dรฉjร  vu, the memory of running past here before to get away.
Now youโ€™re taking steps back toward it.
Ha-Ri taps you on the shoulder and points to the distance. โ€œI see a light. Do you?โ€
Itโ€™s hard to see in the dark, everything vague and seemingly an illusion.
โ€œWhere?โ€ Hyo-Ryung steps forward, peering every which way to get a glimpse.
Ha-Ri scoots both you and Hyo-Ryung a smidge closer to the edge of the hill, gesturing once more. โ€œRightโ€ฆthere.โ€
โ€œOh!โ€ Hyo-Ryung exclaims. โ€œThat really is our school.โ€
You all descend the hill in succession and make it to the abandoned construction zone in no time at all, wandering through cautiously, relying on minimal cones of light.
On-Jo has her fatherโ€™s black flashlight gripped securely in hand, pausing often to shine at the floor, seemingly looking for something.
Out of all the flashlights, hers shine the brightest in the dark.
โ€œWoah, itโ€™s a total wreck in here,โ€ Wu-Jin quips, considering the damage.
โ€œTell me about it,โ€ Joon-Yeong supplies, pushing his glasses further up the bridge of his nose.
โ€œOn-Jo,โ€ you call out, and she snaps out of her trance, gazing your way. โ€œWe should continue on.โ€
She walks side by side with you as you all climb the surprisingly intact steps. โ€œI donโ€™t know why, but my instincts tell me itโ€™s Nam-Ra.โ€
โ€œI hope itโ€™s Nam-Ra,โ€ you reply, pushing the rooftop door outward.
It opens easily.
Everyone scatters around explore whatโ€™s left of the rooftop, and you lean forward over the ledge, this time checking to make sure Gwi-Nam wouldnโ€™t emerge unexpectedly from the shadows.
When you pivot back around, Wu-Jinโ€™s appearance makes you jump, and you hold a hand over your chest.
โ€œSorry!โ€ His eyes widen in alarm. โ€œI didnโ€™t mean to scare you.โ€
You shake your hands in front of you, refuting. โ€œNo, itโ€™s okay, I was too lost in my own thoughts.โ€
He shuffles his feet restlessly, and as youโ€™re about to ask, he speaks up.
โ€œI know this is probably abrupt but when have our conversations been otherwise?โ€ You listen intently as he plows on. โ€œI wouldโ€™ve liked to keep my emotions to myself, but since it was revealed by accidentโ€ฆโ€ Wu-Jin verbalizes in a rush of words as he inhales before speaking again. โ€œโ€ฆIโ€™ll say what I need to say. Justโ€ฆthank you for being my hope through this journey, even if I wasnโ€™t yours. As for my feelingsโ€ฆIโ€™ll take care of them.โ€ He breathes out shakily as he extends his hand out to you. You mirror the movement, placing your hand in his unhesitatingly. โ€œI hope we can still remain good friends.โ€
Your smile is sincere, and so is his. โ€œAfter all weโ€™ve been through together, weโ€™ll always be great friends to the end. Iโ€™m touched you reserved such good feelings for me, Wu-Jin.โ€ You give his hand a final squeeze and he lingers for a second before letting go.
โ€œMaybe in another life.โ€
With one last genuine smile, he walks away, and you take notice of how his steps are lighter leaving than when they advanced.
You turn to your left to see On-Jo unmoving, eyes set intently on the night sky above, moon on high.
She does acknowledge your presence when you stand beside her, but doesnโ€™t take her eyes off the heavens.
Contemplating along with her, even as light snow falls around the edges of your face, and starlight shines on the rims of your eyes, you donโ€™t mind the feeling.
โ€œWhat are you thinking about?โ€
โ€œCheong-San,โ€ On-Jo answers honestly, hands placed on the ledgeโ€™s surface. โ€œFor some reason, even more so tonight than usual.โ€
โ€œIโ€™m sure he misses you too,โ€ you respond, with all the conviction in the world.
โ€œWe have everything in the end, just not each other.โ€
You close your eyes against a snowflake, and it lands on your eyelid before thawing swiftly.
โ€œBut maybe you do.โ€
โ€œHow so?โ€
โ€œHeโ€™ll always be with you in your heart, and when you think of him, Iโ€™m sure he knows exactly how much you miss him.โ€
On-Jo raises a pointer finger upward at a twinkling light in the star field, almost as though she can touch it if she reaches forward. โ€œCheong-San, tonight the North Star shines a little brighter, and I know itโ€™s you guiding me toward a day where we'll meet again."
Right as she finishes sending off her message, a shooting star sails across, reflecting off your eyes, and you both make a silent wish before the group gathers together again.
Snow is scattering endlessly now, cold air seeping into your bones, but still, the fire burns strongly in the middle.
Despite the wind, the flames flicker steadily, much like a heartbeat.
โ€œWho do you think came here to do this?โ€ Hyo-Ryung sweeps her gaze back and forth across the rooftop, finding it completely empty.
โ€œMaybeโ€ฆ.โ€ Dae-Su starts as he scratches his head in thought. โ€œMaybe there are others who came back here like us.โ€
โ€œIโ€™m willing to bet it was Nam-Ra,โ€ you throw in, gazing into the fire. โ€œShe sent this signal because she wishes to see us.โ€
โ€œHow do you know that?โ€ Hyo-Ryung inquires calmly.
โ€œI donโ€™t, but I think I do.โ€
โ€œYou always know.โ€
Nam-Ra.
You whip around and run straight for her. โ€œYou really made it, just as you promised.โ€
โ€œPrezโ€ฆโ€ Dae-Su greets from the back, emotional.
Nam-Raโ€™s lips lift upward slightly. โ€œAm I still the classroom president even now?โ€
On-Jo steps up next to you. โ€œAre you okay? How have you been?โ€
Nam-Ra scans everyoneโ€™s faces and grins brighter. โ€œIโ€™ve thought about you all a lot, and wanted to see you so bad, but I didnโ€™t think I should. Even if I miss you dearly.โ€
You grab her arm gently. โ€œNo, itโ€™s great that youโ€™re here now. You can come with us.โ€
She doesnโ€™t brush you off, but her word alone is as much a refusal as anything. โ€œI have things to attend to here that I canโ€™t yet leave behind.โ€
โ€œLike what?โ€ On-Jo watches Nam-Ra keenly. โ€œMore important than staying with us?โ€
โ€œA lot of things,โ€ Nam-Ra replies vaguely, but she looks at you and expands on her words. โ€œThere are a few more similar in nature to me. Some fled outside of the school, but the rest remained."
You concentrate on her face as she talks. Though there are obvious small scars and her now extremely pale complexion cold to the touch, sheโ€™s smiling and looking so much happier than youโ€™ve ever seen her.
โ€œYouโ€™re not a zombie. Donโ€™t say it like that.โ€
โ€œYou know how students are not children but not yet adults either? Iโ€™m like that. Iโ€™m neither human nor a monsterโ€”suspended somewhere in between two worlds of existence.โ€
โ€œThatโ€™s not true at all, Nam-Ra.โ€ You clutch both her hands, freezing in your own warm ones. โ€œItโ€™s okay for you to stay. You belong here, with us.โ€
Nam-Ra holds on tightly before releasing your hands softly. โ€œWeโ€™re friends even if weโ€™re not together, right?โ€ No one confirms, clearly disillusioned by her impending departure, and she tilts her head to the side, somewhat forlorn. โ€œNo?โ€
โ€œYes,โ€ On-Jo concedes. โ€œYouโ€™re right. Wherever we may be, weโ€™re friends all the same.โ€
โ€œThen, thatโ€™s goodโ€”good enough for me.โ€ Suddenly, Nam-Ra swivels her head to the side, growing serious. โ€œI need to go.โ€ She turns back to you with tears in her eyes and hugs you tightly, whispering so only you can hear. โ€œNothing is over. We will be back to see you.โ€
Your arms drop in confusion as she hesitates to release her arms from around you. โ€œWe?โ€
Nam-Ra beams cryptically prior to leaping off the roof, landing safely back on the ground.
Dashing over to the roofโ€™s end wedged between On-Jo and Su-Hyeok, you observe as Nam-Ra waves goodbye, moving to nudge someone dressed in all black; as black as the night sky, hood lowered and covering the top of their face.
You can hear On-Joโ€™s sharp intake of air from your left as you both peer down at the mysterious figure.
Regardless of the intentional cover, the moment they sneak a peek over their shoulder, head partially turned, youโ€™d recognize that half-smile anywhere.
What leaves you next on an exhale is barely two syllables.
โ€œCheong-San...โ€
