Stylianos Ou and the Cortisol Cows — Fucked Forever (ever/never)
Stylianos Ou belongs to a long tradition of hangdog poets with raging country-politan bands, David Berman, Ryan Davis, Strapping Fieldhands and Palace Music. The fact that he’s Greek detracts not a bit from the charm of discouraged lyrics lifted up by banjo and a deconstructed string band. “We’re fucked forever, we truly are,” he warbles, the words knocked just off center by a European accent. The sentiment, however, scans universally, especially here, especially now.
Stylianos Ou, whose real name is Stelios Papagrigoriou, is a bit of a renaissance man, a visual artist across multiple media, a novelist and a musician. He’s done some solo work under his current name, as well as one other album backed by his band the Cortisol Cows. This current record demonstrates a wide-ranging, verbal and sonic intelligence, however ungovernable. He namechecks France’s controversial novelist Micheal Houllebeqc in one song, something not every indie twang singer could do.
And yet while the intellectual firepower is impressive, Fucked Forever is not, by any measure, a cerebral album. It thuds with blood-in-the-ear rhythms and squalls with tortured string squeals. It reels and surges and cavorts atop unscalable mountains of tone. It reaches through your gut as much as your brain, and often at the same time.
Consider, for instance, the frolicsome “Death Will Come for You,” with its antic, agitated banjo, its enveloping masses of guitar tone, its wobbly intimations of mortality that nonetheless vibrate with joy. This one will remind you a lot of Ryan Davis and his Roadhouse band, in the way that it swings and swaggers and blares triumphantly, despite the bleakness of its narrative. Speaking of death, Ou intones, “It will come like a tax collector, she will wash you with your hair, you were born to life, but death will stick it right in if he’s able.”
Ou deploys a black kind of humor, bringing the absurdities of modern life into his blasted stories. Songs like “Fake Tits” and “Pornhub Spiritual” transmute artifacts of a cultural wasteland into profound and funny spirituals. But even as he cracks the listener up, he’s got an abyss in his pocket. “There’s no end in this bottomless pit, no global positioning system here,” he observes in “Kokkinopoulos (GPS Lament).” It’s a dismal mix that’s simultaneously giddy and very much in line with the current state of affairs. It’s an ideal soundtrack for considering exactly how fucked we are. Which is very. And forever.

Stylianos Ou & The Cortisol Cows is the work of Greek musician Stelios Papagrigoriou and his Cortisol Cows (who also appear to be Greek). This was recorded in Athens, Greece between May and July of 2024. ever/never records (New York) just released this.
The sound is reminiscent of Fortunato Durutti Marinetti and Royal City (listen to the banjo!!).
The Bandcamp page states, "the way the songs roll and twang and hint at a wildness simmering beneath the tattered elegance resembles acclaimed labelmates Ryan Davis & the Roadhouse Band, old hands like Bonnie “Prince” Billy, departed masters like Sparklehorse and rising stars like MJ Lenderman."

@sociieties : “ anya-san, ” stylianos starts, sounding loads more disappointed than he actually is, “ we can’t bring back a dog— i know… ” and naturally, as anya pouts, as if on cue, stylianos reaches for the child, picking her up and placing him on his hip. “ i know, i know, come on, don’t frown… ”
she's heartbroken. absolutely shattered inside, actually. when her bottom lip sticks out and begins to tremble she's already whisked up into strong arms, being placed on his hip in order to be consoled. however, she doesn't want to be consoled, she wants the dog! tiny hands reach out to cling to her uncle as she sniffles to herself, fully prepared to beg until she dies for this dog. even though the dog was indeed with its owner, she wanted him. ❝ but - but! ❞
shifting in his arms, one hand is outstretched and her little index finger is pointed towards the abnormally large, fluffy dog. ❝ but he's so cute! i want him uncle sty! ❞ why can't she have nice things? why can't she have whatever she wants? she deserves it! what with all the studying her dad makes her do, she deserves to have a dog. or even a pony.
well, if she can't have a dog then maybe she could have something else. furrowing her brows, anya reaches up to wipe at her crocodile tears, sniffing once again. ❝ if i can't... then can i get a dinosaur? the one with wings!? ❞

when anya leaves the room kyoto's smile falls flat, her expression falling back into its blank, unbothered one. when stylianos speaks, she turns to look over at him, thin brows furrowing for a moment as she ponders his question. it was fair, after all, to be curious. ❝ a taste of a life i wanted, i suppose. ❞ playing pretend husband and family wasn't bad, once upon a time ago she did have a husband and was supposed to start a family, even if her husband was the worst man alive. it was the life she wanted all that time ago, to be married with a family. now she had nothing, not even her humanity. ❝ and it makes the child happy, does it not? children should always be happy. ❞
he laughs along with the child, amused with the way she squirms about from him tickling her, only stopping when he's satisfied and as she jets away from him, stylianos straightens up. head tilts as she catches her breath, blinking slowly at her as she struggles to find the words / in true child nature, calling it whatever sounds right. hummymoon. somehow, he thinks yannik would be far too amused to bother correcting her, so he doesn't, either. if she believes it's a holiday, then holiday it shall be. upon her exist, stylianos again faces kyoto. " what do you gain from this? "

The discovery of a particular subgroup of antibodies may open the door to more effective dengue therapeutics and the development of a universal dengue vaccine. Dengue fever is a viral infection with a devastating twist: those who have caught it once are more likely to develop life-threatening disease the second time around. Why our bodies not only fail to learn from prior infection but also become more vulnerable as a result is a longstanding mystery that has prevented development of a universal dengue vaccine. Rather than protecting against disease, such a dengue vaccine could instead serve as a first exposure to prime the body for it. The new antibodies are those responsible for dengue’s increased deadliness upon second exposure. “We definitively proved that it’s not the presence of dengue antibodies that are a problem, but the quality of those antibodies,” says Stylianos Bournazos, a research associate professor in the laboratory of Jeffrey Ravetch, a professor at Rockefeller University. “Now that we know the pathway that these antibodies use, we can develop therapeutics against it.”

t’s time… AGAIN-again for… Meet the @varulvcomic Cast!
Stig
Full name: Stylianos "Stig" Lazar
Stats: Male, Ulven (Human/Bat)
Hails From: Ardeel
Rank: Beta/Captain
Stig is a male Ulven of the chiropteran (bat) variety. He is a warrior of the Blaidfästt pack, and the group’s one-man aerial support unit. Stig is from Ardeel, a country to the east of the Northlands, and is of noble blood (though he’s renounced his Lordship).
Stig is cocky, carefree and a bit careless. He likes drinking, showing off, starting fights (usually while drinking and showing off) and sleeping with anyone who’ll have him. All that said, he is a capable warrior and his unique Ulven form and ability to fly makes him a huge asset to his packmates despite his penchant for debauchery.
VARULV is heading into its very last issue of this volume in October and I’d love to have you as a reader! Come check it out at http://www.werewolfcomic.com!

Neasa Crioch {Uncertainties End}-Branch Of The Pale Tree-
"Oh Blossoming Branch Of The Great Pale Mother, How quietly your gaze cuts the throats of those who speak without thought, leaving them ashamed and speechless in your knowing presence. How elegant you are with your words, your dance of inspiration and might, power and flow, the embodiment of her reaching hand, ever extended towards the races of Tyria, despite their foolishness." -Stylianos Eros
Neasa is the direct spawn of the Pale Mother's branches, closest to reaching out towards Ventari on the night of his death. She lived through the eyes of thousands of Sylvari and the mind of Mordremorth. She understood Ventari's teachings and reached a point of enlightenment. Having ventured into the mind of Mordrem within her dream, she returned whole and fortified in her belief.

The Black Rider: Nikolaos Plastiras
Colonel Nikólaos Plastiras (1883 - 1953) was a general and politician, who served twice as the Prime Minister of Greece. He was a politically conflicting or, even, confusing leader who however was very popular at his time. Contemporary historiography evaluates Plastiras as neither a particularly competent politician nor perceptive enough for such a position, however historians agree he was a rare example of a prominent man being very notable for his sense of honour, lawfulness and temperance.
Plastiras fought in the Macedonian Struggle, the Balkan Wars, the National Defense Movement (against the King), World War I, alongside the Allies in the war of the Red and the White Army in Ukraine. Due to his distinction in battle, he earned the name "Ο Μαύρος Καβαλάρης" (O Mávros Kavaláris), "the Black Rider".
Source: mixanitouxronou.gr
In 1922, Plastiras' Regiment was transferred to Smyrna (Izmir) during the Greco-Turkish War. Plastiras was the only anti-King officer that was not dismissed from the army, simply because his Regiment threatened they wouldn't fight under any other commander. While the war ended with Greece's defeat, Plastiras was singled out and called by the Turks as "Kara Biber" (Black Pepper) and his Regiment as "Şeytanın Askerleri" (the Satan's Army).
After the defeat, Plastiras along with Colonel Stylianos Gonatas and Commander Phokas organized the September 1922 Revolution which led to King Constantine I's resignation and the return of the exiled politician Eleftherios Venizelos. His most controversial moment was the "Trial of the Six" (Η Δίκη των Έξι) were six officers were deemed as the major culprits of the disastrous war for Greece, partly due to their blind devotion to the King and their contempt against the popularity of Venizelos. They were condemned to death.
Once, his brother, Giorgos Plastiras, 60 years old at that point, asked for a job in a FIX beer factory. Hearing his surname, they asked him whether he was related to the PM. His brother admitted it but begged them to keep it a secret from him. They agreed and hired him immediately. However, as it happens, a few days later it was all over the news. Plastiras, furious, called his brother to his house and scolded him for getting a job relying on the family name. He counter-proposed that if his brother had financial issues, he should stay with him and share the food.
Plastiras was chronically ill and he lived in a tiny house in Mets (unthinkable for a politician and twice PM). Once, somebody suggested to set up a landline phone for him. Plastiras refused. "How do you even suggest this? Greece will be in poverty while I get to enjoy my phone!?"
Plastiras adopted five orphans from men who fell in battle. He never married and had no biological children.
One night of August 1922, during the Greek army's retreat from Asia Minor, the soldiers were so exhausted that they all fell asleep. When they woke up the next morning, they saw Plastiras on his horse, guarding them. They asked him, "Sir, you - our commander - are standing guard over us?!". Plastiras replied; "I am riding and I am well rested. You travel on foot and carry the supplies. If I don't protect you, then who ought to?"
The publisher of two prominent to this day newspapers (ΒΗΜΑ and ΝΕΑ) once gifted an expensive golden pen to Plastiras. Plastiras refused the gift. When his secretary argued that the publisher might get offended, Plastiras insisted. "I do not need to sign in gold. My little pen is enough. I don't want gifts. For those who make gifts often expect 'gifts in return' (=implied he suspected bribery)".
Plastiras was once visited by Queen Frederica of Greece (daughter-in-law of the king he so fought). She was shocked by the state of his humble home. She asked him why he was sleeping in a cheap camp bed. Plastiras replied that he was used to it since his military days and that many people in the country lived in far worse conditions after all.
Nikolaos Plastiras slept with three frames on the wall over his bed; an icon of Saint Nicholas (his namesake), a painting of French Revolutionists in 1789 and an image of Eleftherios Venizelos!
Plastiras' will to an adopted daughter included the following, which were all his possessions at the time of his death: 216 drachmas, a 10 dollar bill and a note reading "All for Greece". There was also a military receipt charging him with 8 drachmas for a bed he'd lost during the wars. The receipt was accompanied with the amount of money required, with Plastira's requirement to be granted to the public sector, so that he wouldn't die "owing to the Fatherland".
Plastiras was a centrist who often collaborated with liberals and leftists at a time the left was tragically marginalised, at least to the degree that didn’t threaten his own position much. He was likely Venizelos' ultimate fanboy, he was a fierce anti-royalist and loathed the dictatorship of Metaxas. He tried to prevent the Civil War but failed. He was the first one to use the term "Civil War" at a time when others still called it "bandit war", to put the entire blame on the communists. During the war, Plastiras condemned both the Left and the Right for their actions which led to "kin killing kin". As a politician, Plastiras was a pacifist wishing for the unity of the Greek people, but he did not succeed much.
After his death, his body was found to have 27 sword scars and 9 wounds from bullets. His heart was removed and preserved. It was wrapped in a Greek flag and sent to his homeland, Karditsa, as was his wish. His heart is in the Folk Museum of Karditsa.
His heart is kept in a golden capsule in the museum.
Tavropós lake, the lake of Karditsa and a famous artificial lake of Thessaly, was attributed to him. Once, Plastiras was visiting his home Karditsa during severe rainfalls that caused destructive floods in the region. Plastiras looked at the flooded region and said: "This place will become a lake someday". The project for the creation of the lake started a few years later. The lake's actual name is Lake of Tavropós but it is best known as Plastiras' Lake.

Troy's Full Name Part 2
Raven: You know, one thing that I found really odd about you is your name. Troy: What about it? Raven: You cannot tell me that your dad looked at you for the first time and thought your name should be Donald Troy. Troy: Excuse you, I happen to like my name, thank you very much. Raven: I'm not convinced. Troy: Okay, for the record, it's not my full name. Raven: Then what is? Troy: When I came here for the first time, outside of Themyscira, I mean, my dad said I needed to have a name more suited to...the world. Raven: And he thought you should be named after the city the Greeks spent years battling? Troy: I was actually the one who thought of Donald. My dad added a few other names. Hesper, meaning evening star, and Stephanic, meaning intelligent and strong. So my full name is Donald Hesper Stephanic Troy. Raven: Wow. Troy: Yeah. Raven: And I thought Raphael Evangelos Roth-Constantine was a mouthful Troy: If you think that's long, you should hear my Greek name. Raven: Which is? Troy: Asteri Stylianos Vaselis Matthias Danides Raven: Okay, I can't even imagine putting that on a birth certificate Troy: Neither can I

The element of castration appears in many ancient accounts of the Goddess religion. Repeated references were made to the presence of eunuch priests in ancient Sumer, Babylon, Canaan and most especially in Anatolia, where classical texts report that the number of such men serving in the religion of the Goddess at that time was as high as five thousand in certain cities. The eunuch priests in Anatolia of classical times actually called themselves Attis.
Suggestions have been put forth to explain the evident willingness of these men to castrate themselves, a custom we may find somewhat astonishing today. These explanations are supported by the appearance all through the Near East of representations of priests in female clothing, the costume eunuch priests are said to have worn.
Stylianos Alexiou writes, "The priests and musicians wearing long feminine robes fall into a special category. This practice has led to the surmise that, perhaps owing to Syrian influence, there existed companies of eunuch priests in the Cretan palaces. During a later period the eunuch priests of Cybele and Attis in Asia Minor formed a similar class."
It seems quite possible that as men began to gain power, even within the religion of the Goddess, they replaced priestesses. They may have initially gained this right by identifying with and imitating the castrated state of the son/lover; or in an attempt to imitate the female clergy, which originally held the power, they may have tried to rid themselves of their maleness by adopting the ritual of castration and the wearing of women's clothing.
