In the 18th century Monastery of St. Benedict in Catania, Sicily, the Parlor is the place where the cloistered nuns can talk with family or other visitors from a distance. The shutters behind the openings in the walls are folded back and the nuns converse through the grates with visitors who sit in the parlor. This is a common feature in Roman Catholic monasteries of cloistered nuns and monks to this day.
