I live in Spain and there's this gift-shop-sorta chain here (they aparently have a couple shops in like mexico, italy and... Croatia? But 99% of their stores are in Spain) called Ale-hop, and the big identifier that you've found one of their stores...
...is a giant cow stuatue thingie at the door!
Just remembered and now every mention of cows makes me think of this blog so I had to send it ajfnen, have a super nice day!!

There should be more public stuatues that aren't BORING. There should be a statue of triple-bodied Hecate on the town square. I should be able to say "let's meet by the blindfolded girl with the raven on her shoulder". There should be fucked up creatures running along the road and dragons curling around buildings. There should be humans with inhuman eyes and flaring dresses and the farmer's favorite cow and the joy of being alive and the memory of death but no. Guy on a chair

The Beautiful Cuvier’s Beak-nosed Whale
Requested by @swordhare
Don’t be fooled by its appearence; that’s no dolphin! It’s the Cuvier’s Beak-nosed Whale (Ziphius cavirostris), the most common of the beaked whale famile Ziphiidae. The Cuvier’s Beak-nosed Whale, also known as the goose-beaked whale, can be found in every ocean, although they are seldom seen. This is because they prefer deep waters, often diving below 1000m, and because beaked whales as a whole are shy creatures who retreat from human contact.
Z. cavirostris has become somewhat of a model for beaked whales, given that they are the most populus species and thus easier to study, despite their elusive nature. Goose-beaked whales generally travel in pods of about 15 individuals, although males sometimes travel alone. They are a deep-sea species and perhaps the deepest diving mammal on the planet; individuals have been recorded at depths of almost 3,000m and staying underwater for almost 4 hours at a time.
At such depths, Cuvier’s beak-nosed whales hunt squid, deep-sea fish, crabs and starfish. Like dolphins, they use echolocation to find their prey and communicate with each other, emitting a wide range of whistles, clicks, and groans. This is particularly useful in the deep sea where the absence of light limits the use of vision.
Little is known about the reproductive habits of beaked whales, including Z. cavirostris. They seem to mate and calf year-round, although where and how is a mystery. The average lifespan is 35 years, and predators may include sharks and orcas as evidenced by the white scars characteristic of older individuals.
In addition to being one of the more elusive whale species, the goose-beaked whale is also one of the smallest. They usually range from 5-7m long and weigh about 3000kg. One of the features that most easily distinguishes the Cuvier’s beaked-nose whale from dolphins and porpoises is their teeth. Unlike their look-alike cousins, this species only has two, which emerge in the form of tusks in males. Occasionally vestigial teeth will break through the gums, but they’re not considered useful in any meaningful way.
Conservation stuatus: This species is considered Least Concern by the IUCN. They can be caught in fishing nets as by-catch or by whalers, although these numbers are low enough to be disregarded. A larger threat is that of sonar, which has been known to drive large numbers of these whales to beach themselves and die of exposure or decompression sickness.

Re-Brainstorming (8th October)
I decided to rebrainstorm my project to include a variety of subjects to study as i found my other ideas to be either too vague or limited.
The main ideas i had were to build off of Fashion, Perishable Items vs. Single-use Plastics, Objects and Emotions & Body Language.
I will take all my ideas into account when exploring the theme of 'Temporary', but the phrases and ideas i have highlighted are:
Fashion > Fast Fashion > Sustainability, Junk Kouture, "reuse, rewear", disposable fashion trends
Fashion > Homemade > crochet & knitting clothing > reusing wool
Fashion > Second-hand > charity shop> "second-hand fashion trends"- resurgence of 60's, 70's, 80's, etc. fashion > resurgence of cassettes, vhs, cd's, vinyl > nostalgia based culture- people trying to relive when they were young and care-free (a temporary period) > aesthetics vs. practicality
Emotions & Body Language > Reactions are a fight or flight response > subconcious physical or facial reactions > temporary moments - mid-movement, mid-speaking
Objects > Charity shop items > (my items from charity shops) Artemis bust, Nefertiti bust, Budd'ai statue, jewelery, books > items temporarily owned > temporary sentiment > itemshistorically of extreme sacred and spiritual value, reserved for the rich and holy, are now attainable and mass produced > cultural context
Primary Research from home
Charity shop items and temporary meaning & sentiment
The blue vase was once owned for my nana. It was bought as a birthday gift from a charity shop for her in the 80's and was passed onto my mam when she passed away. There are 3 generations of meaning behind this vase: by its first owner who placed it in a charity shop, as a birthday gift to my nana and now as my mam's memory of her own mam.
I bought these children's bookends in the Limerick Animal Welfare charity shop. I bought them because i found them to be quite haunting, why were they put into a charity shop, had a child outgrown them or had they outgrown the child?
i bought this statue of Artemis/Diana in the Curiosity Shop. I have always been fascinated by ancient cultures and their art and spirituality. This stauette is a replica of the Diana of Versailles, the statue given by Pope Paul IV to Henry II of France in 1556. Historically stuatues of gods were reserved for royality, the church and people of high power and i found this highly contrasted to a small statuette of one of the most revered Gods laying forgotten on a charity shop shelf.
Budai has origins centered around cult worship and local legend. Although, an "uncommitted saint" the Chan Masters , leaders in the initial merging of local legend and Buddhist tradition, hoped the induction of likable and odd figures would attract all types of people to the Chan tradition, no matter their gender, social background (not really related to the theme but i really liked this idea).
My mam bought me this in a charity shop when i was younger. The Nefertiti Bust is a painted stucco-coated limestone bust of Nefertiti, the Great Royal Wife of Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten. In Ancient Egyptian culture, the purpose of portraits, statues and art as a whole was deeply rooted in their belief systems; so long as your image continued, your soul would live on. The egyptians did not fear physical death, but spiritual death, they understood that your physical life was limited - temporary- but the memory of you would keep your spirit alive. Nefertiti has succeeded in this as she is still extremely revered and marveled upon, 3367 years since this bust's creation.
Scenes from my bedroom; charity shop bought Bust of Diana, second hand bought books, empty perfume bottle, burnt out candles and a melted candle stick (might draw studies of this)- all signs of life.
Another scene from my bedroom; charity shop bought frog teddy, empty bottles, secondhand 'Pre-Raphaelite' book, science and mythology books given to me by my granda, crochet piece- using wool scraps, Star Wars toys that my dad loved to collect- now belong to me and help me to remember him.

Story time
So quarantine in Israel is over which is not that important but it's context: it's over.
While I was in it for 2 months (almost exactly) I started drawing a lot, mostly in April and May (a rough start at march with only 2(!!!) Complete Drawings while in april I had 15 and in may (1st-15th) 10)
And I also started listening to podcasts in April.
Specificlly the major one that I binged was MAG (the magnus archives) which is amazing.
But.
I listen to it while I draw. So I have this HUGE amount of around 20 paintings that I look it and HEAR the episodes I was listening while drawing those specific pieces.
So I can litraly flip through my sketchbooks and remember specific episodes, which means that now a drawing of a cat in a staircase is bound to a weird spider expirement, Meat Is Meat, and a clastrophobic underground. A very handsome stuatue of a shirless man is bound to The lonely and to a weird magician. And also they mix up because I take breaks from drawings and listen while playing on my phone. It's weird. I kind of want to list every connection.

I remember seeing that post where Fi is like “ah, yes, Link is definitely the hero I’m looking for” despite him lazy or constantly having his head in the clouds.
And it got me thinking: well, yes, it’s illogical that Fi and Hylia would pick Link, of all people, as their chosen one. He’s not the strongest or most skilled of warriors. In pretty much all of his incarnations, he leads a peaceful life, is known for his love of sleep, and can make do with a sword should it be needed (which is pretty rare, especially in SS as swords aren’t allowed out of the sparring hall except for knights or emergencies). So why Link and not someone else?
But after rewatching the cutscene where Fi and Link meet, I realized:
even if you are the strongest, the fastest, the most skilled or even the most experienced of warriors, it all means jack shit if you don’t have the courage to face and defeat the evil that plagues the world (Demise/Ganon).
As the Hero’s Shade put it, “a sword wields no strength unless the hand that holds it has courage.” Because the chosen hero not only has to be a skilled fighter, he also needs the determination and courage to face the run-of-the-mill monsters; to crawl through creepy dungeons of incredible danger (fcking Shadow Temple and Arbiter’s Grounds), to defeat its boss, and then face the demon lord himself in order to free Hyrule.
Fi mentions that Link has an unbreakable spirit... and THAT is the most important criteria. Because you can teach someone how to wield a sword, you can train them to be faster, stronger, precise, but you can’t teach them how to be courageous, you can’t teach them to have an iron will.
A great example of this determination is shown in this very same cutscene, where Fi and Link meet. Link has just lost Zelda, followed this odd phantom-like being all the way to the Goddess Stuatue, and was told that he was the goddess’s chosen one who would defeat evil.
Link’s first reaction is one of apprehension and defense, but the moment Fi informs him that taking up the sword means he can reach Zelda, his hesitation melts on the spot, only to be replaced with a determined look. Link takes up the goddess sword despite knowing very little about his fate and his role as chosen one, despite having lead a peaceful life, despite that he’ll have to travel to a completely foregin land that might be full of perils... all so he can reunite with Zelda.
And that, this proof of his determination, courage, and caring, is the reason why he (and all Links, really) is the one chosen to wield the Master Sword, instead of someone else.

CALL ME BY YOUR NAME (2017)
CALL ME BY YOUR NAME (2017)
“Call me by your name and I’ll call you by mine..”
Call Me by Your Name(2017) is director Luca Guadagnino’s shining glory. With a list of accolades so long it has its own page on Wikipedia, the coming-of-age drama made a lasting impression upon the hearts of many.
An adaptation of André Aciman’s 2007 novel by the same name, the Guadagnino’s film tells the story of summer romance, temporary love and ultimately, heartbreak. We are transported back to the summer of 1983 in the northern Italian countryside. Here, we find Elio (Timothée Chalamet) and his French mother (Amira Casar) and Italian-American father (Michael Stuhlbarg. The house itself is romantic in its setting and age. Large and surrounded by an idyllic landscape, the house sets the scene for cultured and intelligent interactions between our main cast. A professor of archaeology, Elio’s father has invited an American graduate-student, Oliver (Armie Hammer), to assist him with his studies.
The theme of history and archaeology is prevalent throughout the film. We’re often treated to Hellenic sculptures, ancient architecture and cobbled streets. In one iconic scene, Elio’s father and Oliver are called out to a beach, where a stuatue has been found in the water. We see Elio and Oliver shake hands with it, the beginning of a friendship. As with many coming-of-age films, the two seemed at odds with eachother. Elio precocious, talented and flighty while Oliver is more centred, though at times arrogant. However, though there may be recurrent themes throughout the movie, to compare it to similar LGBTQ+ films such as Moonlight (2016)would do this film a disservice.
The feel, tones and emotion throughout Call Me by Your Name feel authentic, helped exponentially by the incredible performances of its main cast. Timotheé Chalamet does a superb job enacting Elio’s careless hurtful mistakes and niaievity in his first major role, and Armie Hammer plays a truly charming Oliver. The chemistry between the two is palpable and beautifully realised, and Guadagnino’s direction and beautiful cinematography makes the film a pleasure to watch. The long uninterrupted take where Elio and Oliver share a conversation at a fountain is beautifully shot, and ties into thematic shots of the two men looking through or past obstacles to see one another.
Another theme that crops up frequently is that of water. We see this at the beach where the statue is found, and the previously mentioned fountain. Elio if often in the water, but never alone. His second love interest Marzia (Esther Garrel) and he go on several swims together, as does Oliver. As the movie explores his not-yet-realised sexuality, perhaps the water serves to quench his lust, or as a respite from the hot summer days.
The film is quite long at a running time of 132 minutes, and meanders along at some points, but the pacing feels right with the hot lazy summer. Call Me by Your Name is a film that will be remembered for years to come, a touching piece of cinema that draws you in and dares you to feel.
