when heugh brings out the beer, his shoulders are still pulled back, spine straight, posture poised as ever for the imminence of threat. it takes going through the second before they begin to fall into something lazy, cheeks warm, forgetting that he has to strain his ears to be on the ready for the just in case. guard down, walls down, he smiles a little easier when heugh laughs. the dry sense of humor that he can understand.

they always trail around work like a bad taste in the mouth; sour, unwilling to travel down that road and the things they both knew to have done and will do, a understanding of lines that couldn't be crossed. they talk of his children, sleeping peacefully. of his projects and of what they were currently doing in school. they talk of josephine, who lights roman up like nothing else can, who heugh says as much.

he is on his fourth drink now, a little embarrassed, but not shamed enough. he had been a severe teenager; he had grown into a severe man. as hard as these emotions were to articulate and to show, he did not want to continue to swallow them down.

he avoids heugh's gaze. takes a sip of his drink, looks at his phone. wonders if he should have said nothing in the silence that follows in the other man's footsteps around the table, the other beer can popping open, the chair moving beside him.

but his hair is tousled, and heugh gives him a kiss there, an affectionate gesture roman is not expecting. and when they continue onto another subject, he doesn't say anything else about it.

Boothill isn’t sure if he’s disturbing the stellaron hunter, but if he is, he’s sure he would have heard a grumpy huff from Ren by now. The ranger carries on strumming on his guitar, sitting with the mediating swordmaster, and Boothill closes his eyes, feeling the music in his soul. They sit together like this for a while before the cowboy lifts his head to the starry sky, eyes still closed as he sings out with gentle whirs of his vocal gears.  “ Te pido de rodillas … luna, no te vayas … alúmbrale la noche ~ ♪ ”

ren is only four feet away from boothill when he hears the sound of his guitar. of course it is then followed by gentle vocals, stringing together a melody that he does not recognize from before. still, it does a good job of offering comfort, feeding the tranquil ambiance with the cadence of his voice. silence has its fingers wrapped tightly around ren’s own throat, keeping him there as a witness and spectator, staring in awe as the one-man crowd he is. legs crossed, hands resting on his lap. everything is awfully calm under the watchful eye of the moon. 

words are not needed where silence can speak for itself. he dares not interrupt the song that is being shared with him lest every star in the sky glare at him for doing so. raven hair falls down his shoulders, pushed away from his face by restless hands. if music can heal, just as he’s been told so many times before, boothill knows just how to spin every syllable into a tangible dream, a bewitching siren’s song, a euphony of acoustic bliss.
