🤌🏻 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . National Grain Silo in Tartu, Estonia. Designed by August Komendant, 1939–1941. This nationally important grain storage facility is special because of its innovative construction method – sliding formwork was used to cast the concrete silos. Attempts were made to destroy the structure during WWII but the monolithic block of silos would not break, and was straightened after the war. It is still being used to store grain. See also the aircraft hangar we posted a couple days ago – another early work in Tartu by August Komendant, the famed structural engineer best known for his collaborations with Louis Kahn, Eero Saarinen and Moshe Safdie, among many others. Habitat ’67 housing complex in Montréal, QC, Canada. Architect Moshe Safdie, structural engineer August Komendant, 1963–1967. The residential complex built for the Expo 67 world’s fair symbolises the social optimism and technological advances of the 1960s. Moshe Safdie wanted to create a modular urban ensemble, which provides the comforts of private houses – spacious balconies, plenty of light and sufficient privacy. All the housing units (354) and the smaller details were produced in the temporary concrete factory installed next to the building site. The concrete modules were put in place by crane and then connected and post-tensioned into unity with steel cables. The technical calculations were challenging due to the large number of cantilevered surfaces. The exhibition "Miracles in Concrete", detailing the prolific career and life of Estonian structural engineer Dr August Komendant, a close collaborator of Louis Kahn, Eero Saarinen, Henry Klumb, and many others, is on show at the Estonian Museum of Architecture in Tallinn until April 26. Do come and see when in vicinity!
