A fresh battery and I’m sure it would start right up and take you anywhere you wanted to go. The #MercedesBenz W114/115 are famously durable machines - Greek cabbie Gregorios Sachinidis racked up 2.85M miles in his 240D before he donated it to Mercedes’ museum. The #StrichAcht cars, named for a quirk of their data plates (which ended with /8) were all new in 1968 and came as the upmarket W114 (6-cyl) and the lower-end W115 (4-cyl or 5-cyl Diesel). - A global car, a small number are still in taxi service in places like Lebanon and Morocco although the newest are now 43 years old. They came in many forms globally but in the U.S., where Mercedes was known only as a luxury car, the range was much more limited. The W115 diesel was one of the very first diesel cars to catch on in the U.S. and the gas-powered W115 220 the price leader, but the gas-powered #W114 250 was the mainstay in the U.S. during the 1969-72 period. Styled by Paul Bracq and Bruno Sacco, they’re the archetypal picture of a 1970s Mercedes but the cars were actually new in 1968. - Mercedes’ U.S. sales were relatively modest but grew consistently through the 1950s and 1960s - from just a few hundred units in 1954 to around 20,000 in 1969 - but in the W114/115 era, they grew even faster. It seemed strange to many Americans that a 57-hp, four-cylinder W115 with wind-up windows could cost $5,300 in 1971 - more than a Cadillac Fleetwood. That’s one reason why the slightly upmarket (and even pricier - $6,400 for a 250 sedan in ’71) 6-cyl W114s did better. But the engineering and quality spoke for themselves. In this pre-CamCord era, you could bank on a Mercedes being long-lived and hassle free, if pricey. - Despite their high initial cost and lack of size, power, and obvious ostentatiousness relative to Cadillacs, Lincolns, and Imperials, even these workaday Benzes were built with an eye toward precision engineering and longevity - not unlike an old-school Packard. Those who tried a Mercedes were typically impressed with how well everything worked and how durable the cars were.
