tired of being mean to the movie there were a lot of good parts:

first of all the bros' dynamic was everything i could've asked for, even if there wasn't at much of it as i'd hoped. the entire opening scene was so charming, the separation scene was gut-wrenching (though not as much as if i hadn't seen it in the promos, annoyingly), luigi succumbing and naming mario to bowser but taking the opportunity to truly sell his brother's good qualities, mario going through rigorous training overnight (including eating multiple mushrooms which the movie very much emphasised his hatred of) and willingly fighting a giant monkey to save luigi, their reunion (BIG emphasis on this one i was losing my mind over that hug -- or more accurately those hugs), luigi defending mario from bowser's flames, them absorbing the star power together (i called that one babyyyy!!) and defeating bowser together.

although i feel like it took up a little too much screen time, the mario and dk dynamic was pretty good. mario saving dk in a manner that risked his own life in spite of their rivalry was a neat little nod to the aspect of mario's personality as someone who saves no matter what. the powerups scene was nifty, even if (again) a lot of it had already been spoiled by the promo. they use their own strengtgs to work together, highlighting that both of them truly shine as part of a team (as shown in games like the m&l and paper mario series, and the dk games where he's paired with diddy kong and/or dixie kong).

again much of mario, peach and toad's dynamic was spoiled by the promos (i really should've taken "movie promos these days just show the entire movie" to heart), and regrettably there wasn't much else aside from those between them, but what we got was great. they were silly and fun (and i will talk about them in more detail if i watch the movie again, this time with a more analytical lens).

then there's the production aspect of the movie. the soundtrack didn't interest me that much (movie soundtracks never do, really), but i did like the remixes of game music in there (the airship theme, the smb3 athletic theme, the smb1 overworld and underground theme, the mk8 menu theme, the captain toad theme... there was definitely more but they don't come to mind as of right now) and the nifty references to songs like the super show theme and the dk rap. the animation was stunning, and i kept finding myself looking at everyone's clothes and the gorgeous environment. excellent quality stuff.

the bros reunion hug is SO significant to me actually it was the highlight of the movie for me and i NEED a gif or video clip of it to preserve it forever godddd.

Tatsumi Kazehaya made converts of all who witnessed him.

Even off-stage, there was an enthralling beat to every syllable he spoke, a beckoning in his pitch. His every movement inevitably captivated even the most disinterested eyes.

But on-stage, he was the apocalypse, dazzling believers and non-believers alike. Like the second coming. The gentle rapture compressed into a man. Those who watched on could hear his thoughts between soulful lyrics: I love you, he preached, his prayerful motions drawing his audience in. So love me too. The music swayed to Kazehaya’s slow dance, harmonizing with his melodic hum, surrendering to his lead. And when he sighed at the finale, his arms relaxed and extended, it was as if he were offering an embrace. All in observance understood his scripture. There was salvation to be found if you accepted him wholeheartedly, the way he accepted you.

Or maybe Kaname read into it too hard. His eyes burned from staring for so long, but, enraptured, he kept them forced wide. He didn’t want to miss even a millisecond of a genius’ performance, if there was anyway he could glean some idol wisdom. In that matter, no dice. He was mesmerized by motions so smooth, his thoughts drew themselves to awe rather than analysis.

And what deep awe he was in! The entire dance, he hadn’t taken a breath. Even after the applause of the other students in attendance, even after Kazehaya had already stepped off the pavilion’s stage and mingled amongst his fellow second-years, Kaname’s eyes tracked him without a puff of air leaving his lips.

How could a man be so beautifully ethereal? It was no wonder Kazehaya had become the most revered at reimei, its shiniest jewel among already polished gems.

More Reimei seniors had taken the stage to perform, to show off to the first-year Special Students, but they hardly held a candle to the evangelist who had shown them heaven moments before. With a three-minute song, Kazehaya effectively outshone the rest of the gala’s cabaret. Kaname felt there was no use bothering to watch their performances. No point bothering with lesser beings now that he already saw the ultimate idol’s skills.

Yet when Kaname next caught sight of Kazehaya, he’s seated front and center, cheering and clapping for his year-mates and their third-year seniors, and the selfish, prideful Kaname felt his cheeks heat up with a bit of shame. That was another facet of Tatsumi Kazehaya’s power: to induce guilt in the prideful and vain. This was Kaname’s first exposure to that omnipotent purity, and he already wanted it to be his last.
