Historically viewed as authentic and factual

The invention of photoshop in 1990 has heabily contributed to the idea of photo manipulation.

Photoshop - a verb to alter photographs

'Pics or it didnt happen' is a modernised version of 'the camera never lies'

However photo manipulation has been documented in the much earlier times of photography

Daguerre's Boulevard du Temple (1838) - A street scene

There is an argument whether or not this image is considered truthful or realistic, as the person should not have been captured due to the slow processing time.

Albumen print - the most popular photography method of the nineteenth century - had a sensitivity to blue light

Gustave Le Grey (1820-84) was praised for capturing the sky and sea in one image. Photographs were made by combining two negatives to make one photograph, these negatives were taken at different locations, creating make-believe scenes.

In a similar situation

Linnaeus Tripe (1822 - 1902) painted clouds on paper negatives

These indicate early use of editing techniques in the founding years of photography.

Documentrary Photograhpy

Photographers staged scenes to display events they had witnessed or to match descriptions. Many of the early war photographs were staged or had been tampered with.

Staging was key with photographers who tried artistic photogtaphy

If the camera 'sees' more than the human eye does this make it more truthful, or less?
