Now Hiring! Diversity Welcome!
1 Thought:
I remember an agency I worked for some years ago that was filled with talent, overflowing with ambition, and full of varying backgrounds and opinions to match. I was an SVP at the time and was provided the autonomy to put together my own teams for each client project.
I personally, as mentioned in an earlier blog, haven't heeded the advice of my father and ignored Geronimo's advice and threw care to the wind and didn't look before I leapt several times.
Not wanting to repeat my bad behavior and honestly that of some of my peers at this agency, with the same latitude, I slowed it down and made a different decision than most seeking a better outcome.
We are comforted by those like minded; we are naturally on a more personal level connected. We have that common ground we all seek in relationships. Is this the best hiring and team building practice?
I think it isn't at all.
The quote has been over used, but the gist is accurate; if we all have the same opinion as well as skill sets we are redundant and not needed.
The best ideas don't rely in comfort; they do I believe live in the differences between us.
So based off what I felt was the better, the less popular opinion, I went the other direction of my peers and put together a team of highly talented people with varying personalities, opinions, as well as temperaments.
Quoting Robert Frost this "road less traveled" did not start off well at all. Our differences were apparent, conflict was high, directionally as a team we were a mess.
Not willing to quit on this idea I devised a set of shared ground rules that would be followed by this diverse group of talented professionals.
Here they are:
Confrontation is welcomed and needs to be shared openly not separate of the group.
Emotion and vigor for your opinion or dissension to another's opinion is also welcomed, but it must be delivered in a respectful way. Nothing is personal, this is business.
You win some, you lose some. We are a team and at the end of the meeting or day we have a common goal to win. Differences stay within the group and we row the same way when a direction has been chosen.
These 3 ground rules created several hundred million dollars in gross profits the years we worked together.
This is in no way easy to manage but if you are vigilant and stick to the plan it can be very profitable. Far more profitable than the comfort zone of like minded.
Don't seek like minded people; seek equally driven.
"1. Quote:
"Diversity; The art of thinking independently together"
- Malcolm Forbes
Entrepreneur, politician, and originator of Forbes Magazine.
1 Question:
Are you surrounded by a team you put together that are just like you? Are you currently hiring looking for more people just like you? Get uncomfortable and create a diverse team of equally driven people with a variety of opinions and unique positions.

Your words are tattooed on me
Every single word
You think I didn't notice
But I truly heard
You built me up from nothing
My foundation was gone
Everyone had abandoned me
I was all alone
All I had were words
That no one listened to
So I screamed and yelled
To make sure that they heard
You saw through the hurt
You saw through the pain
You saw me through the clouds
That brought my life rain
You listened to my pain
You listened to my cries
And when you responded
It was with truth, not lies
You've had to tell me lots
of what I have got
But it fin'lly got thru
And I listened to u
Thank u for the patience
Thank you for the time
Thank you for reading
Every single line

I know that u're watching
And I do not care
Say what you want
If u really dare
