On March 22nd 1875, Alexander "Greek" Thomson died in Glasgow.
Alexander Thomson was born at Balfron in Stirlingshire in 1817. He spent his working life as an architect in and around Glasgow until his death in 1875. He earned his nickname by using Greek Ionic styles in his designs.
In the Victorian era Thomson created some of Scotland's most unique secular and ecclesiastical buildings. Glasgow in the last 150 years has had two of the greatest architects in the world in Thomson and Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
The Caledonia Road Church, where Thomson himself worshipped, fell into disuse as the Gorbals, which had become an area notorious for poor housing and health, was cleared in the mid-20th Century. In 1965 the empty church was torched by vandals and the council, which had responsibility for it, wanted to knock it down.
Another of Thomson's buildings is the St Vincent Street Church in the heart of Glasgow city centre, Thomson's finest villa, Holmwood House in Cathcart, a Victorian suburb about four miles from the city centre, was saved by a small band of enthusiasts 25 years ago and is now cared for by the National Trust for Scotland..
There's a list of his Glasgow buildings at the bottom of this post but with me being an Edinburgh guy I am a wee bit biased and my favourite of Thomson's creations is The Old Royal High School on Regent Road.
Built between 1826 and 1829 on the south face of Calton Hill as part of Edinburgh's Acropolis, at a cost to the Town Council of £34,000 the building is A listed but still faces an uncertain future as developers wanted to build a hotel around the area, the council refused planning permission and the developers appealed to the Scottish Government reporter, who upheld the refusal, this has led to the council stripping the developers of their 120 year lease of the building, and in January it was put back up for sale.
After battling asthma and bronchitis for most of his life, Thomson died on the 22nd March 1875 in the house he designed himself at 1 Moray Place in Strathbungo. He was buried in Glasgow's Southern Necropolis.
Pics are Caledonia Road Church, south Glasgow, Holmwood House and the Egyptian Halls on Sauchiehall Street.

Hannah Frank (1908 – 2008) was an artist and sculptor from Glasgow, Scotland. She was known for her art nouveau monochrome drawings until she decided to concentrate on sculpture in 1952.
Frank's Jewish parents both originated in Russia. Charles Fraiker, her father, came from Vilkomir in the Russian Pale of Settlement. After studying engineering at Leitz in Frankfurt, he immigrated to Scotland in 1905, and changed his name to Frank. Frank's mother was also born in Russia, as Miriam Lipctz. Having immigrated to Scotland, her family settled first in Edinburgh and then in Glasgow, where her parents ran a shop in Gorbals repairing cameras and optical devices.
The Franks lived in Glasgow's Gorbals district, where there was a strong Jewish immigrant community, first in Abbotsford Road and later in South Portland Street. When Frank was 13, the family moved to 72 Dixon Avenue, in Crosshill.
Frank attended Abbotsford Road Primary School followed by Strathbungo School and then Albert Road Academy. She obtained her Intermediate Certificate in 1924 (with subject passes in English, Maths, Latin, French, Science and Drawing). Her Higher Certificate followed in 1926 (English Literature and History, Latin, French and Art).
Frank was a student at the University of Glasgow in 1926–27, 1928–29 and 1929–30, taking courses in Latin, English, French, Moral Philosophy and Botany, living at home during her periods of study.[3] In the session 1927–28 she attended Skerry's College, studying German, where she was assessed as 'having a rare talent for languages'. Although she had to negotiate several re-sits, she graduated Master of Arts on 8 November 1930. Her formal essays, notebooks and examination scripts can be viewed in the University Archives.

Part of the Allison Court elevation. This building is magnificent, but as usual it could do with a bit of maintenance.

📖 Scrooge and Goldie
The Goose Egg Nugget was stolen today, by a Ms. Goldie O’Gilt, proprietor of The Blackjack Ballroom. As I entered The Ballroom she was singing “After the Ball” in a voice as pretty as the crackle of new bills. walked up to the bar and asked for a coffee. The bartender sneered, but he didn’t sneer when I emptied my poke on the bar, and he saw The Goose Egg Nugget. Suddenly Goldie was there - in a long dive for the nugget. ‘What a jewel!’ she said. I told her not to be so doggoned grabby! Regardless, we ended up having coffee together and she asked about my claim. Of course I didn’t actually tell her anything. I don’t know what she put in that coffee, but the next thing I remember is waking up in a snowdrift six miles from town. That woman had stolen The Goose Egg Nugget! Of course I wasn’t going to let her get away with it, so I marched right back into The Blackjack Ballroom, and gave the weaklings and cowards ten seconds to clear out. It certainly was a fight to be proud of! I was like a buzzsaw! Men fell down like rows of dominoes! When it was over I cornered The Star of The North on the balcony and trouble her for The Goose Egg Nugget. She gave it to me alright. Threw it right at my head. I made her sign an IOU for the rest of the gold, which had already been stolen. Then I took her along to my claim on White Agony. She was screaming and clawing like a singed cat. And now here we are.
I don’t quite know what to think about this woman yet. On the one hand she stole my gold yet on the other hand I, well, I admit I do find her quite lovely and charming. In fact I’ll go so far as to admit that I feel for her like I’ve felt for no other woman throughout my life. Before Goldie the closest I’ve ever felt to a duck of the opposite sex was Brenda, some twenty years ago, back in Strathbungo. Anyway I feel like Goldie and I...despite our rough start, maybe could somehow work out together. Then again, maybe it’s just wishful thinking on my part that there’s one person in this sorry that I might...that I can...love?
