On February 23, 1945, six U.S. Marines raised the American flag on top of Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima.
Pictured above is Gunnery Sgt. Tom Lovell’s painting of the second flag raising on top Mount Suribachi, as captured by AP photographer Joe Rosenthal’s famous photo at Iwo Jima.
Three of the six flag raised would be killed before the battle ended. Michael Strank, Harlon Block and Franklin Sousley would never see the photo or know the impact of the image back home.

//OOC
since I'm on my way to visit my grandmother from my dad's side in the east, I feel like sharing this:
Yall know that statue of American soldiers on the Japanese island Iwo Jima, right?
Tumblr media
Well, the soldier at the very front, the one on the verge of falling, is Slovak like me.
Tumblr media
Michael Strank from Jarabiná. Well, FUN FACT:
It's my great great great (idk how great) uncle through my grandma from my dad's side :DDD
@m3vl0vesu you said you like history and I thought you might appreciate this

I came back after I got sick from a tremendous virus (I couldn't hold my cell phone much for two days since I was very sick-)
And along the way I made more characters-
I did Gilbert when he was at his worst and he was too sick.
I did it to Nathan when I was in crisis XD
(Gilbert looks like a recolor of Strank or a cheap copy 😔)

Younger me (never getting any sort of intro into politics by my family), when asked about who I voted for:
Tumblr media
Me, now (still not talking to my family about it):
My mental health may be in the gutter, ampak moj glas pa ne bo!!!
P.S. if you have teens in your family ffs educate them about shit like this. Because otherwise you'll get the "Voting has no meaning, my voice doesn't count". LET THEM KNOW HOW TO FORM THEIR OWN OPINIONS ON IMPORTANT TOPIC FFS!!!

give me the damn green beans fics i’m not even joking. i need dominik in tears. WHAT IS THIS.
Lmao okay I have to write this before the others because it's just so funny to me. Set after the Brötchen part obviously. Dominiks pov
Those goddamn green beans didn't let him sleep. How different could the carinthian term be anyways? It's not like there was much room for variation, right? But still. He was invested now and as soon as Michael came back from the bathroom to join him in bed, he would ask.
And right on cue, the bathroom door opened to reveal a freshly showered Michael, towel low around his waist. As soon as he was within reach, Dominik pounced and grabbed his arm to pull him closer. "Michael. Raffi. Liebe meines Lebens. Wie heißen grüne Bohnen bei euch? Bitte sags mir. Du kannst mich nicht einfach so hängen lassen!"
Michael, who was kind of awkwardly bent over him now, just snorted and kissed the tip of his nose.
"Hm. Nein.
Dominik tried his best not to pout. "Biiiitte. Ich bin doch kein Kind mehr. Sags mir doch einfach. Wie schlimm kann es denn sein?"
Michael straightened up again to get into bed on the other side, dropping the towel as he went. As Dominik appreciated his partners very nice side profile unashamedly, he forgot about the green beans for a second. But as soon as Michael had settled back into bed, he was right on it again, turning to the right so he could face the other man.
"Dude. Antworte mir. Sags mir. Ich schwörs dir ich pack das."
Michael chuckled, turning onto his side to mirror Dominiks position.
"Okay.
For a moment, Dominik genuinely didn't know what to say. He blinked a few times, mouth opening and closing again.
"Bitte.. Was? Strank- willst du mich verarschen? Das ist doch nichtmal ein Wort!"
His voice edged on whiny at the end and he rolled over onto his back, hiding his face in his hands.
"Was zur Hölle. Ist das dein Ernst? Oh Gott."
Michael, who unashamedly laughed at him, the little fucker, didn't even say anything. Instead, he let him go insane on his own.
"Strank- a- lan", he tested the word slowly, trying to pronounce it like Michael did, but probably failing spectacularly. He wouldn't tell him, and if Michael saw it, Dominik would swear up and down that it didn't happen, but a little tear leaked out of his eye as he thought some more about that goddamn word.
"Shit. Michael.

The men who raised the second flag at Iwo Jima.
There are six Flag Raisers on the famous Iwo Jima photo. Four in the front line and two in back. The front four are (left to right) Ira Hayes, Franklin Sousley, John Bradley and Harlon Block.
The back two are Michael Strank (behind Sousley) and Rene Gagnon (behind Bradley). Strank, Block and Sousley would die shortly afterwards. Bradley, Hayes and Gagnon became national heroes within weeks.

Mistigram: today AdeptApril observes #IwoJima Day, by reproducing in #ANSIart Joe Rosenthal's famous Pulitzer-winning photo "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima", which was taken Feb 23 1945 on Mount Suribachi. It depicts Marines Harlon Block, Harold Keller, Ira Hayes, Harold Schultz, Franklin Sousley and Michael Strank. The fight for Iwo Jima, the final Pacific battleground before Okinawa and Japanese soil, would continue for over a month, until Mar 26.
