Happy Stranger Things Ladies Appreciation Week! for this year I'll be doing some oneshots for Kali Prasad my beloved bc shes such an interesting character, she deserves all the love in the fandom <3 enjoy!

Day one prompt: Favorite Character

Despite all her careful planning, despite the countless nights memorizing the schedules of not just the guards, but also the doctors, the nurses, the technicians and other staff, it all comes down to a single moment of impulse.

She’s not sure how she notices that things are different this time. It’s the slightest differences in the way those men phrase things, the way the routine they keep for her isn’t quite the same as usual. It doesn’t take long for her to connect the dots and realize that preparations are being made for That Man to take little Eleven away. Eight won’t be seeing her for a long, long time. 

She breaks them both out that very night.

In a way, Eleven’s involvement is lucky. Eight doesn’t think she could have managed to get very far on her own, but she doesn’t need to give much of an explanation before Eleven starts helping out as well. 

A camera taken down here, a guard blind to them there, and before they know it they’re stepping out of some large, concrete gates to a night sky full of stars, and a dusty, sweltering heat that threatens to choke them on their own breath. 

Freedom has never tasted sweeter.

By the time the alarm sounds, the lab institute is just a tiny cluster of lights far out in the desert behind them. The only light to guide their way is that of the full moon shining brilliantly in the sky. 

Stepping barefoot through the desert isn’t ideal. There’s burrs and stones that keep digging into the soft flesh of their feet. Every once in a while, Kali swears she sees something shuffling in the sands. Something is howling in the distance.

Luckily, they come across a road soon enough. As soon she sees the lights of a small truck approaching, Eight raises her hand and thinks of a large stone wall, mighty and impassable.

The truck grinds to a halt. Eight and Eleven climb up into the back, easily hidden because of the loads of furniture tied down on the flatbed.

When the truck driver blinks away the vision, she blames the lack of coffee for causing her sleep-induced hallucinations in the middle of the night. She takes another chug from the mug she carries with her in the pilot’s cabinet, and accelerates anew. Oblivious to the two tiny stowaways she’s now picked up in the cargo.

They curl up together in the space between the furniture, easily hidden without any need of Eight’s powers.

“Listen to me, Eleven.” She whispers to the yawning younger girl. “Those men are not going to let us go so easily, okay? We’ll have to be careful. We can’t be Eight and Eleven anymore, it’ll be too obvious. From now on—from now on, you’ll only call me Kali, alright?”

“Okay,” Eleven yawns. 

Kali pulls her in so that she can rest against her shoulder. “I won’t let them take us back.” She swears. “Things might get harder from now on, but you stick close to me, and I’ll take care of you. And… we’ll have to find a name for you too.”

“A name?” Eleven murmurs, looking close to falling asleep. “Like what?”

That’s a good question. As far as Kali is aware, Eleven has only ever known the lab. She’s only known her number as her name, like many of the others. She’s not like Kali, who let her name hide in the deepest corners of her heart, where no one could take it away from her. “Any name. Whichever name you like. It’s your choice now, okay? You get to choose.”

Eleven is silent for a moment. “Okay,” She says, and then falls quiet.

Kali leans her head back and closes her eyes. The last thing she thinks about before sleep claims her is the bright moonlight shining down on them.
