One of the most prolific artists of our time, 2Pac’s solo career only lasted from 1991-1996, but his impact is profound. An incredibly insightful, observant storyteller, Pac’s passionate portrayal of young Black men as victims of a violent, racist society remains relevant and affecting to this day.
Pac’s massive body of work is often viewed through the lens of his complexities — he died when he was barely 25, and up until that point sometimes struggled with striking a balance between the fame and attention that surrounded him and continuing to be a voice for his people.
To this day, there hasn’t been another voice like Pac — passionate, raw, profoundly emotive, and perceptive. A voice for the voiceless, 2Pac’s legacy thrives because of the richness of his lyrics and the themes he wasn’t afraid to explore.

"ARE U STILL DOWN" - JON B. FEAT. 2PAC [BONUS SONG]
Our BONUS SONG pick is a celebrated classic guest spot! On what would be his final recorded performance, Pac get seductive on this track by the R&B crooner.
#25
"IF I DIE 2NITE"
An opportunity to flex his lyrical skills, particularly on the opening verse, “If I Die Tonight” from "Me Against The World," puts the idea that Pac was just a passionate rapper and not a lyricist to rest.
#24
"2 OF AMERIKAZ MOST WANTED" FEAT. SNOOP DOGGY DOGG
Pac connected with Snoop Dogg on the second single released from "All Eyez On Me," “2 Of America’s Most Wanted.” Daz produced the track, which became one of Pac’s most recognizable offerings.
#23
"IF MY HOMIE CALLS"
It sounds almost innocent compared to how paranoid and spiteful he would become after feeling so consistently betrayed later in his career. A single from his 1991 debut, 2Pacalypse Now, once again, Pac is proclaiming his loyalty to his homies, on one of his most impressive early tracks.

#22
"STARIN' THROUGH MY REAR VIEW" FEAT. OUTLAWZ
A peek into the direction Pac may’ve been headed if he’d lived, “Starin' Through My Rearview” first showed up as a standout on the "Gang Related" soundtrack. Produced by 2Pac and Johnny J, the production and delivery was still passionate but a bit sleeker than some of his earlier offerings.
#21
"TRAPPED"
The debut solo single from his politically-charged debut, "2Pacaplyspe Now," “Trapped” samples the Bar-Kays and James Brown as Pac raps about being trapped in a racist society and police terrorism. Shortly after the song dropped, Pac was allegedly assaulted by the Oakland police for jaywalking (he sued the department for $10 million but settled for just over $40,000).
#20
"POUR OUT A LITTLE LIQUOR" - THUG LIFE
Easily one of the best songs from the "Above The Rim" soundtrack, and the lead single from Thug Life Vol. 1, “Our Out a Little Liquor” is Pac paying homage to the homies who are dead or locked up in prison over a Johnny J track.
#19
"DEATH AROUND THE CORNER"
Pac spent a lot of time during the latter half of his career talking about death. It’s an integral part of the reason why he’s taken on a mythological persona. Not even two years after “Death Around The Corner” dropped, he was gone and songs like this one suddenly felt even deeper and more significant to his legacy.
#18
"NO MORE PAIN"
It's one of the most atmospheric songs in his catalog and he doesn't have any other track that sounds quite like this one. Over creepy, haunting production by Jodeci’s DeVante Swing, Pac delivers sinister lyrics, and it’s among the best songs on his double album, "All Eyez On Me."
#17
"STR8 BALLIN'" - THUG LIFE
What might be Pac’s best song appeared on his 1994 compilation album, Thug Life, produced by beat legend, Easy Mo Bee. One of the things people love the most about 2Pac is that even when he veered off course, caught up in the flash of fame and the struggles of finding a balance between his everyday reality and what he wanted to see and be for his community, he loved his people.
#16
"MADE NIGGAZ" FEAT. OUTLAWZ
Over a chilly piano line, this track is one of those songs that sums up a lot of late-career 2Pac: brazen and paranoid, cocky and fatalistic. Serving as ringmaster alongside the Outlawz, he delivers one of his darkest anthems. From the "Gang Related" soundtrack.
#15
"HOW LONG WILL THEY MOURN ME" - THUG LIFE FEAT. NATE DOGG
Produced by Warren G and Nate Dogg, Pac wrote “How Long Will They Mourn Me” after his friend, Kato was killed (Pac also shouts out Kato on “Hell Razor”). He opens the track by dedicating the song to him, before getting into his verse, questioning how long he’ll be mourned if he dies in the streets, over gloomy, melodic production. As he surmises: “It’s kinda hard to be optimistic when your homie’s lyin dead on the pavement twisted…”
#14
"KRAZY"
There are flashier songs that get cited more frequently on Makaveli, but “Krazy” is one of the most reflective moments on the project, a track the perfectly ties the heavy themes together. Here, he’s more exhausted and burdened than angry as he once again explores how it feels to survive when the odds are stacked against you. He questions the world around him and his sanity as he tries to navigate it all.
#13
"BRENDA'S GOT A BABY" - 2PAC
On “Brenda’s Got a Baby,” the second single from his 1991 solo debut, "2Pacalypse Now," his sorrow and pain are palpable on the track, which is about a 12-year-old girl named Brenda, a victim of statutory rape who ends up pregnant by her boyfriend/cousin, gives birth on a bathroom floor, and winds up crushed under the weight of it all.
#12
"BURY ME A G" - THUG LIFE
Another song where contemplating death is the theme, “Bury Me A G” (which samples The Isley Brothers) is the opening track from Thug Life, Vol. 1 sets the tone for the project.
#11
"HIT 'EM UP" FEAT. OUTLAWZ
Arguably the most inflammatory diss track in the history of diss tracks, this 1996 B-side(!) was released as tensions between Death Row Records and Bad Boy Entertainment were boiling. Pac infamously took shots at The Notorious B.I.G., Junior M.A.F.I.A. and Mobb Deep, with the Outlawz riding along.
#10
"AMBITIONZ AZ A RIDAH"
Laced by stark pianos and a menacing whisper hook, “Ambitionz az a Ridah” was an immediate favorite from All Eyez On Me. Daz Dillinger was at the top of his game with the production, and 2Pac’s confident swagger nudged the track to the top of his discography.
#9
"TEMPTATIONS"
With cameos by everyone from Isaac Hayes to Jasmine Guy, the star-studded video for “Temptations” was shot while Pac was incarcerated; but even without his charisma, is one of Pac’s most memorable. The song, produced by Easy Mo Bee, is one of the lighter moments on Me Against The World, and a great example of his playboy side.
#8
"PAIN" FEAT. STRETCH
Originally featured as a bonus track from the Above the Rim soundtrack, the Earl Klugh-sampling “Pain” is a fan favorite, even though it’s hard to find (the original hasn’t been available on the soundtrack for years, and it isn’t streaming anywhere). It’s moving, raw, haunting, and incredible how well he articulates the soul-deep sorrow and trauma caused by limited options in a profoundly racist system.
#7
"CALIFORNIA LOVE" FEAT. DR. DRE
The single that officially announced Pac as the newest member of Death Row, “California Love,” featured on his double album "All Eyez On Me," became a celebratory statement for both the label and the rapper. The song is energetic and boastful as Pac parties on the Dr. Dre track as a newly free man, with Roger Troutman lending his synth-vocals to the hook.
#6
"I GET AROUND" FEAT. SHOCK G, MONEY B
One of Pac’s most notable songs came in 1993 when he dropped “I Get Around” as the second single from his sophomore album, Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z. It’s another gem produced by Shock G, who also memorably features on the song along with his Digital Underground co-star, Money B. A perfect summertime jam, the song dropped in June and is still guaranteed to liven up a party to this day.
#5
"DEAR MAMA"
One of Pac’s most instantly recognizable songs came on his 1995 album, Me Against The World, a melancholy, often tortured album that played a key role in establishing 2Pac as one of the most emotive, thought-provoking artists in rap. Pac is paying homage to his mother, Afeni Shakur, who also appears in the video, acknowledging both the hard times and the good.
#4
"HOLLER IF YA HEAR ME"
Recorded following the 1992 L.A. riots, you can hear Pac’s rage on this banger from his second album, 1993’s Strictly From My N.I.G.G.A.Z when he raps: “To my brothers on the block better stay strapped, black/And accept no substitutes/I bring truth to the youth tear the roof off the whole school/Oh no, I won't turn the other cheek/In case ya can't see, that's why we burned the other week..."
#3
"HAIL MARY" FEAT. OUTLAWZ
“Hail Mary” has one of the most popular rap openings of all-time: “I ain’t a killer but don’t push me…” and sets the tone for the dark, haunting track that’s a standout on 2Pac’s final album, Don Kilumanti: The 7 Day Theory (known to rap fans simply as Makaveli), and one of Pac’s most well-known songs.
#2
"KEEP YA HEAD UP"
2Pac’s heart for the community is a huge part of why he’s a Hip Hop icon, and it’s never clearer than on “Keep Ya Head Up” where he summarizes much of his intent in a single bar: "Some say the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice/I say the darker the flesh and the deeper the roots/I give a holler to my sisters on welfare/Tupac cares, if don't nobody else care.” Dedicated to the recently-murdered Latasha Harlins, Shakur's godson and the young daughter of Cheryl "Salt" James.
#1
"SO MANY TEARS"
The second single from Me Against the World, Pac is in his element on “So Many Tears.” The song was produced by his longtime friend and frequent collaborator, Shock G, and it’s a standout offering from both of them. Raw and affecting, Pac’s questioning his spirituality, examining it against the backdrop of his bleak reality, a theme that he explored regularly throughout his latter career, and especially on this album. This is a quintessential 2Pac song that encompasses what fans loved the most about him.

/Jai Paul, Coachella 2023. Image from Reddit
As I listen to his finally released ‘Bait Ones’ album and the duo ‘DYLHN/He’ on a very unhealthy amount, I recall the legendary Coachella performance that had occurred. Jai. fucking. Paul. In the flesh. Finally. The longest hiding game has finally come to an end.
It was one of the very few artists performances I was waiting to watch in this years Coachella. I haven’t been seeing able to keep track of the last few Coachella events, specifically since 2019 to 2022—but when that 2023 list dropped: Frank Ocean and... JAI PAUL??? *____*
I have an unhealthy obsession with this man, basically a deity, to me, in a musical and industry sense. I try to track his music production from time to time whenever I feel the need to steal styles and sound rigs/effects chains. This man has showed me the ropes of music production without even speaking to me directly, more of like a ‘this is DIY, do your fucking thing, idiot.’, type that felt like a commentary to what he was doing. Plus, it isn’t clearly stated when these demos were made but some of them spanning from years 2007-2008, and sounding half-polished and stands on its own that introduces culture and character without being overbearing and underwhelming.
Me, clearly, being at home and never in my entire life attending that blasphemous event, is waiting at the Mojave stream since 2 in the morning, waiting for the stream title to be ‘LIVE’ and not replays of the entire day 1. I waited for his name to be in the stream, but to no avail, a Snail Mail replay replaces his spot for 7:45PM. It was mildly frustrating, yes, but I know deep down myself it was just draft schedules and withholder name and time for a duration. It starts, Yung Lean performs, great as always, but not at his best vocal-wise, I finish up until Remi Wolf, which is also a great artist herself – definitely check her out if you have the time. And as I wait for the schedule cards to change... phshwwwww... a re-stream of Snail Mail. I felt somewhat crushed, defeated and betrayed even. I know how these motherfuckers operate, wanting the shroud of mystery to stay still around Jai, never to see him perform live and only for the live audiences to experience. Yes, at this point, I was pissed for a brief moment, but tried to remain calm as I know Jai content will be floating around social media, particularly Twitter, sooner or later. I felt somewhat jealous, too. Jealous of the fact that I don’t get to feel the joys of being there live and not having to fanboy while these people are there consuming it all. Listen, I have waited almost half of my life just to see this man move a limb on-screen, Jai and Coachella, why the fuck do you hate us? Is this some sort of personal vendetta the fans? So I let it all happen. I’ve finally accepted I can never see Jai Paul perform anymore. And there I became that one fool that retweeted every JP updates/pictures/videos/threads that are being uploaded on twitter. I wished him well on his performance and said my final goodbyes to the stupid idea that I’d get to see him perform on stream.
...Or so I thought.
Thank, fucking, God... after a few hours of already giving up, a rebroadcast of the Jai performance was to show on the livestream after Labrinth. I screamed internally, but thought to myself that this already happened, being the petty fuck that I am at times, that the people have already cheered and clapped to this, had a peek on his setlist and even seeing small clips of his performances on Twitter, to which I blame myself for the spoils, I can never enjoy this anymore.
But I sold myself short on the thought: the performance was beautiful for a debut. Jai sang so beautifully like in his records, hitting all the notes consequently. Started 20 minutes late but with Higher Res, continuously being great that he is, ending with Str8 Outta Mumbai, a fan favorite. He delivered – so beautifully and flawlessly.
Thank you, as you continue to inspire me and be one of my important icons. You are yourself, and I hope you continue to be what you want for you and your music. You deserved it and the fans loved what you did. Forever grateful.

Jai Paul - Bait Ones (Leak 04-13)
The mention of this album probably only raises the eyebrows of the mySpace blogosphere goblins of the early 2010s (guilty as charged), but the mark it left on the zeitgeist of the 2010s is pretty undeniable.
Everything about this album bleeds romance, from its clear and heart-aching tribute to neo-soul from the likes of d’Angelo and Lauryn Hill, its intentionally smoky, foggy mixing, to the whole narrative of its release (or lack thereof).
It’s really important to take its unfinished nature into account. The story from the artist himself is that it was leaked in its entirety pre-mastering and pre-even having finished the album by someone in whom he had placed his utmost trust, and the trauma of it draining any motivation from him to create at all.
And it’s so, so, infuriating. Because even in its unpolished state, this record genuinely changed how I look at music. Being so attuned to the sparkly finish of modern pop, the messy and overt sidechaining and the uncomfortable, intimate closeness of how it’s mastered blew my mind. A lot of this is thrown into the lead demo, BTSTU, at its very peak, and no wonder it blew so many people’s minds when it dropped out of nowhere in 2011 or so. It’s starkly minimalistic with not much but a kick, snare, and an incredibly jarring bassy sawtooth LFO as its lead synth to accompany his again very closely mixed whispered vocals. Possibly because of the sparseness of it all, it’s intoxicatingly romantic and nostalgic. The other demo, Jasmine, takes the close mixing and pumps it up to 11, and as a more traditional love song, it makes a lot of sense, and it oozes with yearning with his up-to-your-ears voice providing dissonance with its gated and distant synths and percussion. Both these songs have an incredible level of soul and polish to them.
And so it makes listening to the rest of the album fill me with that same level of yearning, an endless stream of what-ifs and what-could-have-beens, and ruminating about missed opportunities. Even the fragmented half-of-a-concept demos like Chix are drop dead gorgeous. The absolute standout is Str8 Outta Mumbai, which I still think should’ve been a lead single, with its exuberant Bollywood bombast, and the Vani Jairam sample from Meera that genuinely hit me in the face like a brick covered in jasmine garlands and caked in sandalwood. It really was the first time in years of having grown up as an outsider to two cultures that I really felt like I could embrace the over-the-top, maybe a little cheesy joy of the music of my roots, where before I tended to be quite pretentiously ashamed of the excess of Bollywood and filmi music. It’s honestly really liberating. I’ve gone back to listen to other filmi greats like Lata Mangeshkar ever since.
It really does say a lot that even though in Paul’s eyes, this album is always going to be half baked, these fractions and halves and almost-theres of ideas still filled every corner of my brain, heart, and soul. It really is that important of an album to me. With this having from such a personal place for me, let alone it being unfinished, it really doesn’t feel right giving it a numerical rating, so I won’t.
#jai paul#musicreview#bait ones#if youre reading youre probably quite close to me#PLEASE listen to this record

( lee hyeri, cis female, muse i ) oh snap! is that SHIN EUNBYUL they work over at high volume where some of the other employees have labeled them as THE AVERAGE JOE. that’s probably because they can be a bit ( optimistic. ) but also pretty ( dishonest. ) they’re TWENTY TWO and they’ve been living in woodstock for TWENTY TWO YEARS. it must be their shift because i totally hear THE CRANBERRIES blasting from the record store. ( a little tikes piggy bank tucked under the bed, clothing label sticking out from the back, snap clips with varnish peeling off, jelly shoes with the strap taped together, leaving lisa frank stickers along record crates ) @volumeupdates
BIO
the luke hemsworth of the family but middle child
goes by byul
tried to go by ‘e.b.’ but her mum went berserk because she’d reduced her name to two letters for the ease of her yt friends and her brother bullied her for being e.t’s ugly sister so now she tries to go by silver star (her name translated into english) but it doesn’t quite stick
claims that her older sister and younger brother stole all her beauty, brain cells and height
family invested everything into older sister so she could go to college in new york: savings, loans, moved to smaller house which is even further from the town centre
brother requires all attention as he has high hopes of getting into college on a baseball scholarship and she lowkey can’t wait until he’s far away from woodstock
her grades have always been average so no one expects her to leave – her parents talk about how nice it is that she’ll be with them forever but she knows that’s because they want her to take care of them when they’re old … which she would! if they didn’t live in woodstock
she tells them she’s going to move to california, but they think she’s as serious about that as she is about wanting to go to college, or becoming supermodel of the world, or an olympic swimmer, when she has average grades, of average height, and can’t even swim
if her life was a movie, she’d have fallen asleep in the first ten minutes – it has always been so boring and uneventful, so she lives up in her head with her fake scenarios to keep things interesting – most of the time, they’re taken straight from a book or magazine
sometimes these thoughts spill over into reality because she can’t fathom the idea of people realising she’s as plain as she is, and her little white lies give her a bit of sparkle to stand out (in her opinion)
but she will get to california!
she even has a plan:
she’s been working at freddy’s diner since she was fifteen, escaping to high volume whenever she can, a place where she can pop her headphones on during her breaks and pretend she’s getting ogled at on venice beach, but she’s terrible at saving so seven years later she’s still grinding
once she graduates high school, she has enough time for a second job and she’d dropped enough hints in front of jerry for him to kindly offer her a job. after all, she spends as much time in high volume as she does at freddy’s so there’s not much of a difference once she becomes an employee -- still floating around the place, sipping on her coke can, either people watching or people chasing -- except now she has access to the register
after a big argument with her parents, she ended up moving out into a place in the middle of town. that was never part of the plan because saving was easier when she lived at home. she’ll say things got really bad but really, she was just getting closer to her target and she wanted a valid reason to put it off for a bit longer
she was only supposed to do it once – stealing from the cash register. it was just right there, no one was around, and she thought it was going to be her last shift because jerry was angry at her for being late again (granted, he hadn’t actually been mad, but it was one of those days when everything felt personal)
besides, she’d overheard a group of girls she’d idolised in school talk about how they stole some underwear and they made it sound so cool
she felt like everyone could hear her heart thumping against her chest as she walked out of the store but the day after, no one said anything about it, no one even noticed, and she wasn’t fired. so she did it again, and again, and again, and eventually she didn’t even bat an eyelid
the extra money was supposed to help her reach her goal faster but, again, she’s terrible at saving and her parents are so hardworking, she can’t help but feel guilty and buy nice things for them every once in a while and when they ask where she got the money from, she lies and says jerry gave her a bonus for being a good employee
on the other hand, if they’ve had an argument, or they’ve forgotten about her again, she’ll have a full on les-mis-i-dreamed-a-dream episode then splurge out on a cute jacket because it’s hers and it’s new! rather than worn out hand-me-downs from her sister or brother!
started her own side hustle called the separation agency – inspired after a customer at high volume asked her to help him break up with his boyfriend. so she’s the messenger for people who have things to say but don’t have the balls to say it to someone’s face themselves. usually they’re horrible messages, like break ups. she’s had like three customers and tries to promote her side hustle whilst on her shift at high volume
she thinks her “business” could actually thrive in a bigger city which is just another reason why she needs to get out of woodstock – it’s holding her back!
anyway, jerry’s missing, which is perfect for her because she gets to come in late and not get told off, and maybe steal a little more than she usually does
PERSONALITY:
when she’s around people, she seems like an extrovert: bubbly, talkative, dramatic ... which uses up a lot of her energy and her social battery is weak, so needs her own space often, and likes doing nothing by herself so sometimes she’ll lie to get out of plans or bail last minute
she has big dreams, and talks about all her big plans, but has leaving anxiety which is why she’s shit at saving and makes up excuses as to why she can’t leave just yet
has main character syndrome -- likes to live her life as a romcom, most of her lies revolve around her love life because she wants to be seen as desirable, but also will overanalyse everything
sensitive, passionate, immature, sympathetic, fickle, clumsy, dramatic, caring, head in clouds
will pretend to knows things to fit in like ~hipster~ bands or anything really, depends on the crowd
could gladly spend all day talking to customers at work then the next day she’ll prefer to day dream in the storage room
rides a bike to and from work and almost everywhere else too -- the only one out of her siblings who had to bike to school because small car and siblings took up all the space -- she’s had the same bike since high school
loves spice girls but feels like she’ll be judged so keeps quiet and plays it when she’s closing
honestly could hate you one day and have a crush on you the next but you wouldn’t even know it -- a vicious cycle
collects stickers and leaves them everywhere and on everyone - often passive aggressive through them, basically uses them like emojis
will try to order food and get others to pay for it - especially kfc, never gets to eat the drumsticks at home so will honestly cry if people steal the drumsticks from her
buys lottery tickets and scratch cards because she has a 50/50 chance of winning
WANTED CONNECTIONS: (current connections)
start up: stolen str8 from a kdrama that ruined my life hehe her parents set her up with a pen pal to keep her busy out of guilt because they’re so busy with her siblings and work and obviously she romanticises it !!! her parents would’ve asked to lie a little bit, just so she’d be writing to someone she’d easily obsess over -- love island vc: someone who ticks all the boxes
xoxo gossip girl: someone who loves a good gossip sesh -- they probably send 👀 at each other across the store when things feel a bit tense, which is code for ‘meet me in the storage room’ so they can chat away for the rest of their shift
lunch stealer: she makes her own lunch every day and is extremely protective over it but one day it went missing and she knows it was them (maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t) so now they are her sworn enemy
sister’s/brother’s friend: therefore an automatic enemy
shut up: someone who just tells her to shut up because she chats so much shit and she’s insane - just sandra x dina vibes from superstore (x)
carpool karaoke: she hates cycling in when it’s raining, so either she’s trying to get them to be her designated driver or has already succeeded and is annoying about it
crush #1: someone she has a crush on (more of an infatuation) and they’re not interested in her in the slightest but in her head they’re giving her mixed signals and she has made up a fake boyfriend to try to make them jealous
crush #2: someone she thinks has a crush on her. either because they’re nice or tease her or just mean, it doesn’t matter, she’s insane so she’ll interpret it however she wants
ex: they never broke up, or even dated, but she thinks something almost happened between them and she thinks she cut things off by giving them space
separation agency: someone who once used the agency either out of the kindness of their heart or for a different reason entirely and now she won’t stop pestering them to try and get them to use it again
no thots just vibes: i just like this gifset tbh (x) and we can brainstorm !

His school goes up against a rival school in a basketball game for the championship.
To prevent his team from winning, several players on the opposing team plan a drive-by shooting on him.

He is hospitalized and put in a coma for up to six months.
Age 18:
He awakens from his coma but is unable to play basketball anymore, due to the injuries he has received.
To make matters worse, he must repeat his final year of high school due to missing out on so many school days.

He takes the tests needed to earn his G.E.D. and passes.
A few months later, he takes the bar exam and passes, earning his bartending license.
Age 22:
For his one-year anniversary, Jelani takes Rashaad to get a tattoo to celebrate.
He chooses an eagle tattoo across his neck.
Age 25:
Jelani sadly passes away due to heart failure. He leaves Rashaad the bar.
He fixes the bar up and renames it "The Eagle's Nest".

Eazy-E
Eric Lynn Wright (September 7, 1964 – March 26, 1995), known professionally as Eazy-E, was an American rapper and rap mogul who propelled West Coast rap and gangsta rap by leading the group N.W.A and its label, Ruthless Records, pushing the boundaries of lyrical content.
Born and raised in Compton, a small yet violent city near Los Angeles, Wright had several legal troubles before founding Ruthless in 1987. After a short solo career with frequent collaboration with Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, they joined, forming N.W.A, later that year.
N.W.A's debut studio album, Straight Outta Compton, released in 1988, highly controversial then, is now ranked among the greatest and most influential albums. The group released its third and final studio album, Niggaz4Life, in 1991, and soon disbanded.
During N.W.A's splintering, largely by disputes over money, Eazy-E became embroiled in bitter rivalries with Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, who had departed for solo careers in 1989 and 1991, respectively. Resuming his sole career, Eazy-E released two EPs.
Yet Wright remained more significant behind the scenes, signing and nationally debuting the rap group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony from 1993 to 1994. But in 1995, suddenly hospitalized and diagnosed with AIDS, Wright died through its complications.
Early life and Ruthless Records investment
Eric Wright was born to Richard and Kathie Wright on September 7, 1964, in Compton, California, a Los Angeles suburb noted for high crime rates and gang culture. His father was a postal worker and his mother was a grade-school administrator. Wright dropped out of high school in the tenth grade, but later received a general equivalency diploma (GED).
Wright supported himself mainly by selling drugs, and introduced his cousin to the illicit occupation. Wright's music manager Jerry Heller recalls seeing Wright selling marijuana, but not cocaine. Heller would claim that Wright's "dope dealer" label was part of his "self-forged armor". Wright was also labeled as a "thug". Heller explains: "The hood where he grew up was a dangerous place. He was a small guy. 'Thug' was a role that was widely understood on the street; it gave you a certain level of protection in the sense that people hesitated to fuck with you. Likewise, 'dope dealer' was a role that accorded you certain privileges and respect."
In 1986, at age 22, Wright had allegedly earned as much as US$250,000 from dealing drugs. However, after his cousin was shot and killed, he decided that he could make a better living in the Los Angeles hip hop scene, which was growing rapidly in popularity. He started recording songs during the mid-1980s in his parents' garage.
The original idea for Ruthless Records came when Wright asked Heller to go into business with him. Wright suggested a half-ownership company, but it was later decided that Wright would get eighty percent of the company's income and Heller would only get twenty percent. According to Heller, he told Wright, "Every dollar comes into Ruthless, I take twenty cents. That's industry standard for a manager of my caliber. I take twenty, you take eighty percent. I am responsible for my expenses and you're responsible for yours. You own the company. I work for you." Along with Heller, Wright invested much of his money into Ruthless Records. Heller claims that he invested the first $250,000 and would eventually put up to $1,000,000 into the company.
Musical career
N.W.A and Eazy-Duz-It (1986–1991)
N.W.A's original lineup consisted of Arabian Prince, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, and Ice Cube. DJ Yella and MC Ren joined later. The compilation album N.W.A. and the Posse was released on November 6, 1987, and would go on to be certified Gold in the United States. The album featured material previously released as singles on the Macola Records label, which was responsible for distributing the releases by N.W.A and other artists like the Fila Fresh Crew, a West Coast rap group originally based in Dallas, Texas.
Eazy-E's debut album, Eazy-Duz-It, was released on September 16, 1988, and featured twelve tracks. It was labeled as West Coast hip hop, gangsta rap and, later, as golden age hip hop. It has sold over 2.5 million copies in the United States and reached number forty-one on the Billboard 200. The album was produced by Dr. Dre and DJ Yella and largely written by MC Ren, Ice Cube and The D.O.C.. Both Glen Boyd from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and MTV's Jon Wiederhorn claimed that Eazy-Duz-It "paved the way" for N.W.A's most controversial album, Straight Outta Compton. Wright's only solo in the album was a remix of the song "8 Ball", which originally appeared on N.W.A. and the Posse. The album featured Wright's writing and performing; he performed on seven songs and helped write four songs.
Ice Cube left N.W.A in 1989 because of internal disputes and the group continued as a four-piece ensemble. N.W.A released 100 Miles and Runnin' in 1990 and Niggaz4Life in 1991. A diss war started between N.W.A and Ice Cube when "100 Miles and Runnin'" and "Real Niggaz" were released. Ice Cube responded with "No Vaseline" on Death Certificate. Wright performed on seven of the eighteen songs on Niggaz4Life. In March 1991 Wright accepted an invitation to a lunch benefiting the Republican Senatorial Inner Circle, hosted by then-U.S. President George H. W. Bush. A spokesman for the rapper said that Eazy-E supported Bush because of his performance in the Persian Gulf War.
End of N.W.A and feud with Dr. Dre (1991–1994)
N.W.A began to split up after Jerry Heller became the band's manager. Dr. Dre recalls: "The split came when Jerry Heller got involved. He played the divide and conquer game. Instead of taking care of everybody, he picked one nigga to take care of and that was Eazy. And Eazy was like, 'I'm taken care of, so fuck it'." Dr. Dre and The D.O.C. sent Suge Knight to look into Eazy-E's financial situation as they began to grow suspicious of Eazy-E and Jerry Heller. Dr. Dre and The D.O.C. asked Eazy-E to release him from Ruthless, but Eazy-E refused. The impasse led to what reportedly transpired between Suge Knight and Eazy-E at the recording studio where Niggaz4life was recorded. After he refused to release Dr. Dre and The D.O.C., Suge Knight told Eazy-E that he had kidnapped Jerry Heller and was holding him prisoner in a van. This did not convince Eazy-E to release Dr. Dre and The D.O.C. from Ruthless, and Suge Knight threatened Eazy-E's family: Suge Knight gave Eazy-E a piece of paper that contained Eazy's mother's address, telling him, "I know where your mama stays." Eazy-E finally signed Dr. Dre and The D.O.C.'s releases, officially ending N.W.A.
The feud with Dr. Dre continued after a track on Dre's debut album The Chronic, "Fuck wit Dre Day (And Everybody's Celebratin')", contained lyrics that insulted Eazy-E. Eazy responded with the EP, It's On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa, featuring the tracks "Real Muthaphuckkin G's" and "It's On". The album, which was released on October 25, 1993, contains pictures of Dre wearing "lacy outfits and makeup" when he was a member of the Electro-hop World Class Wreckin' Cru.
Personal life
Wright had a son, Eric Darnell Wright (known as Lil Eazy-E), in 1984. He also had a daughter named Erin who has legally changed her name to Ebie In October 2016 she launched a crowd-funding campaign to produce a film called Ruthless Scandal: No More Lies to investigate her father's death. It ended unsuccessfully in December 2016.
Wright met Tomica Woods at a Los Angeles nightclub in 1991 and they married in 1995, twelve days before his death. They had a son named Dominick and a daughter named Daijah (born six months after Wright's death). After Wright's death, Ruthless was taken over by his wife. According to Jerry Heller, Wright had 11 children with eight different women.
Illness and death
On February 24, 1995, Wright was admitted to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles with a violent cough. He was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. He announced his illness in a public statement on March 16, 1995. It is believed Wright contracted the infection from a sexual partner.During the week of March 20, having already made amends with Ice Cube, he drafted a final message to his fans. On March 26, 1995, Eazy-E died from complications of AIDS, one month after his diagnosis. He was 30 years old (most reports at the time said he was 31 due to the falsification of his date of birth by one year). He was buried on April 7, 1995, at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California. Over 3,000 people attended his funeral, including Jerry Heller and DJ Yella. He was buried in a gold casket, and was dressed in a flannel shirt, jeans, and his Compton hat. On January 30, 1996, ten months after Eazy-E's death, his final album, Str8 off tha Streetz of Muthaphukkin Compton was released.
According to his son Lil Eazy-E, Eazy-E was worth an estimated USD$50 million at the time of his death.
Musical influences and style
Allmusic cites Eazy-E's influences as Ice-T, Redd Foxx, King Tee, Bootsy Collins, Run–D.M.C., Richard Pryor, Egyptian Lover, Schoolly D, Too $hort, Prince, the Sugarhill Gang and George Clinton. In the documentary The Life and Timez of Eric Wright, Eazy-E mentions collaborating with many of his influences.
When reviewing Str8 off tha Streetz of Muthaphukkin Compton, Stephen Thomas Erlewine noted "... Eazy-E sounds revitalized, but the music simply isn't imaginative. Instead of pushing forward and creating a distinctive style, it treads over familiar gangsta territory, complete with bottomless bass, whining synthesizers, and meaningless boasts." When reviewing Eazy-Duz-It, Jason Birchmeier of Allmusic said, "In terms of production, Dr. Dre and Yella meld together P-Funk, Def Jam-style hip-hop and the leftover electro sounds of mid-'80s Los Angeles, creating a dense, funky, and thoroughly unique style of their own." Birchmeier described Eazy-E's style as "dense, unique and funky", and said that it sounded "absolutely revolutionary in 1988".
Several members of N.W.A wrote lyrics for Eazy-Duz-It: Ice Cube, The D.O.C. and MC Ren. The EP 5150: Home 4 tha Sick features a song written by Naughty By Nature. The track "Merry Muthaphuckkin' Xmas" features Menajahtwa, Buckwheat, and Atban Klann as guest vocalists, and "Neighborhood Sniper" features Kokane as a guest vocalist. It's On (Dr. Dre) 187um Killa features several guest vocalists, including Gangsta Dresta, B.G. Knocc Out. Kokane, Cold 187um, Rhythum D, and Dirty Red. Str8 off tha Streetz of Muthaphukkin Compton featured several guest vocalists, including B.G. Knocc Out, Gangsta Dresta, Sylk-E. Fyne, Dirty Red, Menajahtwa, Roger Troutman and ex-N.W.A members MC Ren and DJ Yella.
Legacy
Eazy-E has been called the godfather of gangsta rap. MTV's Reid Shaheem said that Eazy was a "rap-pioneer", and he is sometimes cited by critics as a legend. Steve Huey of AllMusic said that he was "one of the most controversial figures in gangsta rap". Since his 1995 death, many book and video biographies have been produced, including 2002's The Day Eazy-E Died and Dead and Gone.
When Eazy was diagnosed with AIDS, many magazines like Jet, Vibe, Billboard, The Crisis, and Newsweek covered the story and released information on the topic. All of his studio albums and EPs charted on the Billboard 200, and many of his singles—"Eazy-Duz-It", "We Want Eazy", "Real Muthaphuckkin G's, and "Just tah Let U Know"—also charted in the U.S.
In 2012 an Eazy-E documentary was released by Ruthless Propaganda, called Ruthless Memories. The documentary featured interviews from Jerry Heller, MC Ren and B.G. Knocc Out.
In the 2015 film Straight Outta Compton, Eazy-E is played by Jason Mitchell and the film is dedicated in his memory.

hunter x hunter thotz so far
soooo ruth and i started watching hunter x hunter woohoo finally! we’re like 10 or so eps in so i decided to collect some thots below on what i think so far (i havent rlly been spoiled so im interested to look back on this once ive watched more)
first off i love gon sm, hes immediately so endearing...hes just a baby!!!! just a little baby boy!!!! hes just so cute and good, im so not ready for him to get put thru the wringer later on as ive vaguely heard happens
the first few episodes were really fast paced which i enjoyed and thought was for the best. the characters came thru really strongly and i feel like we heard juuuust enough about the setting, premise, and what a hunter is
i wasnt expecting leorio and kurapika to show up in the FIRST EP lmao that surprised me. i love so much how the three of them like IMMEDIATELY became a family unit in like 3 eps lmaoooo it was like ok here are 2 parents and their son bam. also leorio and kurapika having a showdown on the boat (which didnt end up happening) was a wild ride
i have like zero fucking idea what a hunter is and the more they attempt to explain the more confused i get. its honestly kind of hilarious how little sense it makes. to be clear this doesnt detract from my enjoyment of the show at all (if anything it adds to it)
oh my god fuckgin hisoka is the worst he hasnt done much but i hate him so much already. good villain writing/design so far, hes so hateable
ruth every time hisoka shows up: WE HATE UR PUSSY BIIIITCH
the character design in this show is....a lot lmao. ruth and i decided its a cross between soul eater, jojo, and one piece in terms of aesthetic. the designs are certainly unique and so many of them are just so ugly hvbjafdbdskgs it reminds me of that post thats like ‘masterpost of jojo characters who look busted as shit’ lmao
i already love this show a lot tbh like the way its structured so far has been kinda atypical for a shounen, at least in terms of fights - we really havent seen a lot of fighting yet. also nen hasnt shown up yet and its reminding me of stands not becoming a thing in jojo until p3 lmao
anyways in litrally ep1 i already loved the 3 main characters we saw...leorio is a wild dude, i love him sm, especially as a fellow medical binch who wants MONEY. like, thats literally me. and kurapika is also wild, like damn they rlly just dropped their backstory in ep 1 huh. like we rlly are jumping right into this
also when leorio said he was a teenager i was like WHAT???? just like evryone else which YEA omfg. i cant believe hes that young lmao. kurapika too
so leorio is one of those 19 yr olds who looks 40 and kurapika is the type of teen who looks like a 12 yr old
and KILLUA i love him sm also....hes an adorable assassin catboy and hes perfect. i love how quickly he and gon hit it off (tiny bfs.....) and how hes just like, this extra as hell 12 yr old with a SKATEBOARD and ASSASSIN SKILLS and then he sees gon and is like guess im gonna fall in love
i gotta talk abt gon again i just love him. hes so polite and cute and kind and good, i just love him...wht a good protag. his motivation is just wild too, hes like well my dad abandoned me to go off and be a hunter (which he isnt even mad abt, what a nice lad) so im gonna do that to see what the deal is
i love how gon (just like the audience) doesnt really know what a hunter does/is and just goes into the exam totally blind lmao. also the fact that his skills seem to include jumping good, being speedy, having the energy typical of a 12 yr old, being a weather sniffer, being nice, and having good instincts/constitution as a result of having eaten random grass and forest shit growing up...amazing.
is this gonna turn out to be one of those things where its like, wow theyve been using nen this whole time without realizing! tht would honestly explain a lot lmao
i really enjoy how like....semi-normal the power levels are rn? while also being all over the place and wack as fucks obvs (like hisoka dissolving that guys arms in his first appearance was A Lot, as well as all the card stuff hes done..). like the part wher that blue guys (evil franky one piece) punches the ground and it leaves a crater and everyones like !!!! wow wtf thats unnatural! that literally threw me off bc that kinda thing is so normal in anime lmaoooo. but i like that thats the starting point bc it leaves a lot of room for power escalation w/out it getting too out of hand
specifially our protags are starting out pretty low on the Shounen Badass scale - especially gon (and leorio, tho i kinda predict he wont be as fight-y? what with him being premed)
i find it kinda hilarious how killua hasnt done too much (aside from murdering those 2 randos in like half a second) despite being so clearly skilled...like when they have to do the 5v5 fight thing in the tower, i wouldve thought hed be the first up cause hes so badass but nope
actually thats what i find interesting - i was expecting all 5 (or maybe 4, we’re in the middle of leorio’s ‘fight’) of the fights to be physical smackdowns but so far nope, theyve been very cerebral. that bodes well, w/how smart the fights have been, bc i doubt the fights will get stale tht way
tho they might be kinda frustrating sometimes - there are times when u DO just wanna see a good ole fashioned shounen beatdown yknow. but we do get enough of that now (and im sure we’ll get plenty more) to satisfy (like kurapika decking fake-franky)
oh also the opening. its so charming and cute and i love the song...its also so hilariously basic and classic - like one of those typical 2000s anime openings where theres stock run cycles of all the main characters and theres a little animation of all the characters fighting together (and that fight doesnt actually happen, its just for the op)
also love that leorios the only one who doesnt fight in the OP, instead getting saved from death by gon lmao. im curious if he’ll end up fighting at all (i assume a little?) and if he’ll use nen (probably healing type nen?)
also i already wanna fistfight ging for abandoning his perfect angel son. also leorio is literally gons dad already, they even look alike wow
that guy hanzo has done basically 0 things so far but i rlly like him already, im curious if thatll change. also sorry for calling u ‘hanzo overwatch!?!?!?!’ upon first viewing my guy
tonpa is str8 up so annoying pls leave u pathetic loser
tho it cracked me up when he and Evil Mr Clean were facing off and starting getting all detailed/shaded and i was like o shit is he actually badass. are we abt to see like a nen battle or st. but no....lmaooo
i found it interesting that leorio didnt really admit to wanting to be a dr at first...hes such a good dude, he kinda just let kurapika think that his motives were superficial and greedy when in actuality theyre selfless
also wanting to be rich can be a rlly interesting character motivation and i love when its done right
oh my god i cant believe it took me this long to mention the hilariously edge ED....like holy shit, its so 2000s, the song sounds like its been re-recorded like 40000 times bc of how bad the audio quality is, or something, idk how to describe music but its hilariously specific in tone and its rlly funny to see shots of the main characters smiling while this screamo whatever plays in the bg....wow.
also s/o to killua for being king of edgy with that ‘tear of blood’ shot
i rlly like how much of the plot, especially the early hunter exam stuff, is moved along simply by gon being a good kind polite boy.
love the fact that he and leorio and kurapika (and later killua) all team up without even saying anything...i love that, most shounen would have them be like ‘che, i cant team up with anyone, i have to prove myself ALONE or my victory wont be EARNED’ or w/e idk. who knows that might happen later but rn i love how they all effortlessly work together (and how they all contribute - without each other they would have all failed at different points)
oh man also killuas first appearence was so funny when he drank a bunch of tonpas poisoned drinks and was like [smirks] tch, loser, im immune to poison. get dunked on. [skateboard away] i love him so fuckgin much
omfg that part where killua looks all shoujo/kawaii and is talking abt how hes gonna kill his family or w/e and gon is just like ^_^? i love they
HOOOOLY FUCK I ALMOST FORGOT, BUT 65% OF THE REASON I MADE THIS POST WAS TO MENTION HISOKAS THEME LMAOOOOO his music being like fuckgin, spanish guitar/traditional mexican type music is sooooo goddamn funny to me for some reason, like the first time it played i was like ok whats going ON with this spanish guitar lmao but then i figured out that its his theme and god thats so funny
hisoka is also so fuckign jojo like he could so easily be in jojo. he and dio would be the fakest best friends ever and would constantly try to kill each other on the lowdown and shittalk each other constantly in private but be super sweet to each others faces. also they would hatefuck. no im not taking criticism bye
i rlly love everyones backstories also, and i find it interesting that weve gotten to hear/see at least some of all 4 of the MCs backstories. theyre all compelling and interesting and i cant wait to dive in further
also calling it now but kurapika is totally gonna get way too absorbed in revenge and get fucked up/disregard their own life (maybe in the style of robin in one piece?) we’ll see but i feel like it aint gonna end well. i could be wrong, i really havent been spoiled at all, thats just my guess
hbahjfbshjf the ep that was called ‘hisoka x is x sneaky’ was SO funny that reads like a dora the explorer ep title
also i had no idea the ep titles were formatted like that w/the x’s and thats rlly funny
ok but the part where leorio - who seems to be pretty bad at fighting - tries to fight hisoka - whose literal first appearence involved him effortlessly dissolving a dudes arms - is so fucking funny. leorio rlly b a premed w/no brain cells....same bro.
also i loved the Cutthroat Kitchen portion of the hunter exam and how not a single contestant was any good at it lmaoooo. do they not have the cooking channel in hxh-verse earth
ok i love how the main characters are all intuitive in different ways depending on their own skills, like how killua can immediately guess that kurapika has never killed anyone before after they didnt kill evil-franky
kurapika joined killua in the Edgy Corner during that part also. like, they both have legit reasons to be edgy, but the shots of kurapika sitting in the darker tunnel part was kinda funny
also killua, a literal 12 yr old, calling out kurapika for being a murder virgin was pretty hilarious
ok also i didnt know that madhouse animated hxh which is rlly funny but w/e i love the animation especially the occasional chibi parts and the facial expressions (like killuas ‘i love murder’ catboy expressions)
oh also when killua murdered those 2 guys and his hand was all vein-y and his nails were pointy, his hands looked like hisokas do...i wonder if thats a legit connection or it hisoka just b getting his nails did
kurapika talking abt how even seeing a regular spider makes them rlly angry was both very sad and kinda funny. kura u have so many issues god bless
kurapikas smackdown on evil blue franky was fuckin dope tho. and the red eyes reveal was SPOICY
rlly love how the individual fights highlights the characters strengths/morals/motivations/whatever....the writing is already really strong tbh
ugh ok ive ranted enough this is a Lot lmao its so disorganized but w/e
basically i love this series so far and im rlly curious whatll happen next. also everything seems pretty chill and upbeat so far (relatively) and i know this shit gets dark and im NOT FUCKING READY.
til next timeeee
#i think readmores are broken? sometimes? anyways i hope thats not the case and if so then im sorry everyone#im gonna schedule this for like 3 am this is just for me to ramble lmao#anyways i need a tag#uhhh#lj watches hxh#hxh#bam there we go

Left Lane Didon - Southern Vangard Radio Interview Sessions BANG! @southernvangard #radio presents the Left Lane Didon interview session! It’s our opinion here at Southern Vangard Radio that Delaware is the next spot to watch. This MC and his extended crew - Jay Nice, All Hail Y.T. and Chris Skillz to name a few - and the production team they’ve assembled over the past 2-3 years, is a force to be reckoned with. We get Left on the horn to talk about his relentless work ethic over the past few years, how Nice convinced him to get back in the rap game one more time and why collaborator & friend Tha God Fahim has been such a source of inspiration & motivation. Left also breaks down how he developed working relationships with producers JLVSN, Benji Scorate$ & Str8 Bangaz to name a few, as well as his longtime collaborator Tone Beatz. Things get REALLY interesting as we’re wrapping up the interview when Left drops some exclusive news about an upcoming project he’s been working on that everyone will be anticipating now that the cat is out of the bag…but we’re not going to ruin the surprise here! Silly rabbit, you have to press play to get the inside scoop - so don’t delay another second, and like we say ‘round these here parts - it’s ALWAYS that #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard // southernvangard.com // @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #stitcherradio #soundcloud #mixcloud #youtube // #hiphop #rap #undergroundhiphop #boombap #DJ #mix #interview #podcast #ATL #WORLDWIDE #RIPCOMBATJACK Recorded live September 16, 2019 @ Dirty Blanket Studios, Marietta, GA southernvangard.com @southernvangard on #applepodcasts #soundcloud #youtube #spotifypodcast #googlepodcasts #stitcherradio #mixcloud #SmithsonianGrade #TwiceAWeek #WeAreTheGard twitter/IG: @southernvangard @jondoeatl @cappuccinomeeks SOUNDCLOUD https://soundcloud.com/southernvangard/left-lane-didon-southern-vangard-radio-interview-sessions/ APPLE PODCASTS https://itun.es/us/QyyX9.c GOOGLE PODCASTS http://bit.ly/svrgooglepodcasts SPOTIFY PODCASTS http://bit.ly/svrspotifypodcasts YOUTUBE https://youtu.be/DtVoLzPLXXU/ (at Delaware) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2mbGMaAJpI/?igshid=h546c2ikp8b3

LA-based musician Vanda delivers cheeky single ‘Queen V,’ an empowering hip-hop production that fuses a playful energy with powerful self-confidence for a bop that has us reaching for the replay button. A candid track on theme of self-love led by Vanda’s impressive rap bars and a gritty soundscape, sees the rising star tap into a message of growth and change. Bursting with a musical talent that she has honed since the age of three and an overload of charm, Vanda’s music is as fierce and fun in equal servings, offsetting her mature artistry with an instantly likeable tongue-in-cheek approach.Inspired by the lessons she learnt during quarantine, the booming beats and anthemic presence of ‘Queen V,’ give way to a thoughtful message about rebirth and growth in a move towards major change that she refers to as “a shedding of the skin.” Speaking about the recording process behind the track, ”What started off as just playing around, shifted into a powerful essence of energy Joel (my collaborator) and I really fell in love when we realized we had a special vibe in the chorus and the pre chorus,” adding that it allowed her to tap into a whole new sound within her. Back in June, hip-hop/pop/punk-rock chameleon Rico Nasty unveiled a swaggering summer track called ‘Magic,’ which now has a brand-new music video. Featuring the Maryland-born performer dancing in a variety of sharp outfits and hairstyles, plus riding a dirt bike, ‘Magic’ kind of looks like if Spice Girls’ ‘Say You’ll Be There’ video met Mad Max. Which is to say, it’s highly stylish and entertaining. [via Uproxx]

Following the lo-fi grime of ‘Ultimate Dinner Party’, UK rapper Deyah makes a solid return with another vibey release titled ‘Shoreditch’. Picking up the pace from her usual laid-back approach, Ten Billion Dreams' production houses a pounding bassline, hammering percussion and the occasional horn lick. Revealing a soulful edge to her voice, Deyah paces through the track uncovering her self-affirming bars and slick wordplay. With precise lyrical flow, the rapper dips in and out of her native languages including Yoruba and French. [via Trench]
Canadian hip-hop artist Naya Ali is on the verge of unveiling her new album Godspeed:Elevated, but in the meantime, she shares this new single ‘Str8 Up’ to warm her fans up to the new release. The track has a bouncy and moody trap aesthetic that has three distinct parts all while showcasing Ali's masterful songwriting capabilities. The verses see her in her element as she details the obstacles and hurdles she had to overcome as a young black woman in the music industry. Armed with fiery flows and a dynamic cadence to match, Ali shows her resilience as one who is fully focused on her goals. The refrain section lowers the energy and here Ali delivers a melodic performance filled with emotions and an honest look at her current reality. Once again, Ali flips the script with a hi-octane chorus to complete her mission. [via Earmilk]
South London’s Bryn has unleashed the video for her latest tune, ‘Lean’. Produced by Stewszy, this drop is another lively one from Bryn who takes on the drill beat with a fun approach and heaps of energy. The visuals mirror the track’s uplifting feel and are made up of quick shots of Bryn in good spirits with her peoples. [via GMR Daily]

Robin Knightz has shared her new single 'Composed'. The Manchester rap riser stays true to her roots on the single, which finds the 24 year old talent speaking her truth. Respectful to her surroundings, her tongue in cheek bars even make room for a cheeky Vincent Kompany reference. Out now, the bubbling production pushes her to the next level - Robin Knightz' first release on new Sony subsidiary 5K Records, it's a real line in the sand for the Manchester artist. She comments... "'Composed' was recorded in October 2020, that current time having such an impact on everyone including myself and the people that helped me create this. We didn’t really have an idea on what we wanted to make, we were just all tryna be productive in such testing times." [via Clash]
