Garden Plants That Help Pollinators Face Resistance From Homeowners
Garden Plants That Help Pollinators Face Resistance From Homeowners https://ift.tt/WzPchCf What’s better than saving the planet? Someone else saving the planet. Davis & Stoyko have surveyed residents of Ohio to gauge their attitude to pollinator-friendly plants. They found that most homeowners were unwilling to add pollinator-friendly native plants as they were seen as untidy. This reluctance matters because residential gardens could provide important food and shelter for pollinators like bees and butterflies. Researchers selected 200 random properties in two Ohio counties along gradients of property size and value. They then sent out surveys asking about yard management and willingness to plant specific pollinator-friendly plants. The response rate was good, 57%, which indicates interest in the topic, but when they analysed responses using statistical models, some of the results were unfortunate. Davis & Stoyko found that only about 20% of homeowners said they would plant purple coneflower or wildflowers, and just 8.5% would plant milkweed. However, there was some good news, people who already had these plants were much more likely to want to add more. The biggest factor predicting a resident’s unwillingness to add native plants was their desire for a neat yard. The research aligns with previous studies that have shown yard choices are strongly influenced by neighbourhood norms and social pressure. This is an issue as gardens can significantly help pollinators given their large total area in urban regions. Making yards more pollinator-friendly requires understanding what motivates homeowners’ decisions, and may require giving them a sense of ownership over their conservation choices. Davis, A.Y. & Stoyko, J. 2024. Determinants of willingness to add pollinator beneficial plants to residential yards differ by plant type. Bulgarian women dressed in the traditional clothing of the Bulgarians of Banat
The history of the community of Roman Catholics located in three different Countries of Central and Eastern Europe, whose identities and traditions have remained the same in time.
The Bulgarians of Banat are a singular community, currently scattered in three countries: the majority live in south-western Romania, while the others are in the Vojvodina region of Serbia and in the north-western area of Bulgaria. In fact, their name is linked to the historical region of Banat, now located between Romania and Serbia, at the time part of the House of Habsburg.
In 1688 Bulgarian Catholics organized the Cirpovzi revolt against the Turkish rulers, stifled by the Ottomans with extreme cruelty. The inhabitants were forced to abandon their homes, and guided by their bishops and priests found refuge in the territory of the then House of Habsburg. After an initial period of displacements, in 1738 they settled in the town of Stari Bescenov and in 1741 in Vinga (Romania). “They were granted several privileges by Empress Maria Theresa – said Svetlana Karadzova, mayor of Bardarski Geran and president of the Association of Banat Bulgarians in Bulgaria – this drove also other Catholics from Northern Bulgaria to settle down there.” The mayor went on: “In fact, most of the Catholics in Bulgaria descend from the sect of the Paulicians (similar to the Cathars, ed.’s note) converted by Franciscan friars.” Gradually, the expatriate community grew and expanded in other countries. After the liberation of the Bulgarian state in 1878 many Banat Bulgarians returned to their homeland.
One of the most interesting aspects is the language and writing. The latter, conversely from Cyrillic Bulgarian, adopts a variant adapted to the Latin alphabet. “Banat Bulgarian – said Stoyko Stoykov, linguist – differs from literary Bulgarian in that the former dates back to the period when the community emigrated to Banat”. There are a wide range of books and publications in Banat Bulgarian, from the liturgical to the popular ones. Also the homes are characterised by the [Central European] style, as well as the clothes and cuisine.

Play test #6
Had hoped the Uncertainty and Situation cards from Moo.com would’ve arrived ahead of this play test, but the package was stuck in Customs Clearance for a day, and is expected to arrive end of today instead. But we used the two sample ones I printed on my inkjet, and the PDF for additional Situations. We tested “Timed” mode, with a 30 min initial limit that was extended each time we advanced a tile. Adding mins equivalent to the level, e.g. level II = 2 min, level III = 4 min, worked really well. Nav had a hard stop at 2 pm, but we transformed two tiles to level IV. The system seems to be working.
Got to chat with Peter Jones and Peter Stoyko, and show them the current design.
Have also figured out the various play modes:
Flourish - Try to transform 3 tiles to level IV. Extinction - Try to transform 3 tiles to level IV before time runs out! Race (best with 6 players) - Start with two Landing tiles, and split off into two teams, to build two colonies, but drawing from the same stacks of tiles. Whichever team beats the other to transform 3 tiles to level IV wins.
