hi I love your one piece story. in the beginning I was wondering if it was going to be ace/penny. however, I also feel like given the fandom it's in it makes sense for it not to have romance. one piece is about friendship and I don't miss it in your story. but I am curious about your reasons because you did write oc/storycharacter in the past? if you wanna share I would love to hear about it! 🙌 As a fellow writer I find it difficult to write stories without a romantic interest or without writing the story in a way where it's clear I'm flirting with the idea of shipping two characters so this is interesting in a few different ways to me? 🫶 If this is a weird ask pls ignore. 💀

Hiiii!! This is so not a weird ask at all.

Hmm, I know a lot of people felt like Ace/Penny was going to be a thing, but to me, their platonic friendship is so much richer to explore than a romantic relationship, so while to outsiders it seems like one thing, Ace and Penny are very clear aware that it's not romantic. Ace has this thought when Sabo mentions it: "Penny…and…him? She was great, but not…not…in any hell could he consider the possibility of anything more than friendship," and that pretty much sums up Penny's attitude as well. She wants the best for him and wants him to live so that he can stay in her life and Luffy's life, so it's a pretty selfish want--asking him to live for her comfort.

And it's not that Penny doesn't want romance in her life. She's 23 and experiences her own desires, but it's also not a major priority in her story. We'll see her flirt and have those occasional romances on islands, but as for a real ship, if it happens, I want it to be in the most natural way possible. I didn't want to twist the story to accommodate her romance, so even though we see some connections between her and big players, Penny's actions are largely isolated. They have impacts in the world, but they stem back to Penny, so she's not interrupting the flow of other people's stories and still allowing canon to happen.

When I started writing Penny's story, the first scene that I wrote was one during the Impel Down arc and it had very little to do with a ship. It actually had a lot more to do with what Who's Who said in Wano--that someone had told him of Nika in Impel Down, so Penny's whole story originated from that plot-point. What if someone knew of Nika and Joy Boy and their dream was tied to those myths?

Okay you can’t just drop that “I almost died five times this morning” so I’m takin you up on the Story Time offer- what happened???

Okay so this was from literally two months ago, and I am so sorry, but here we go!

I am generally a very accident prone person with general bad luck, so lbr near-death incidents are not even remotely unusual for me. (You should hear all the things that happened in my organic chemistry lab in undergrad, it was rather ridiculous.) In this case though, it was mostly just the bad luck of horrid weather. The midwestern snowpocalypse courtesy of the polar vortex really had it out for me.

So let’s just start with the fact that I’m a college kid with a shit car. Like really shit. This car is genuinely as old as me. Like it was built in the same year I was born. My girl Bert has been alive and kicking for years, but she struggles with snow. Mostly due to the fact that she is so old that she still has rear-wheel drive AND no traction control. For people who don’t deal with snow often, please know that this is not a good combo for any weather other than nice and sunny because, but it is especially bad for snow. Fishtailing and spinning out does not even begin to describe it.

Now, normally, it’s not too big of a deal. The midwest knows snow. We deal with it all the time. We know when to plow the roads and when to start salting. Generally, even if there’s snow, it’s not on the roads. However, due to reasons that I found out later were the result of Local Political Fuckery, that morning there was a solid 3-5 inches of unplowed, unsalted snow and slush built up on all the roads, including the interstate!

So I have a 30-35 min commute to my med school every morning. Not too bad. But that morning, do you want to know how long it took? Two hours and 40 minutes! My car almost went off the road multiple times. Into ditches. Into trees. Into other cars. My personal favorite, off two separate bridges. And of course, we can’t forget Bert’s rear-wheels trying to get us going but getting no traction in the slush and spinning out,,,,,, right in front of an oncoming semi,,, three times.

So five times was a probably on the low side of the number of times I almost died that morning, but hey I survived!

So I stood by it then, and I stand by it now: #The universe can’t kill me #It’s tried and failed multiple times before #Why should I have anymore confidence in its abilities now?
