What If...Earth Faced Hala's Mightiest Heroes?
So here’s a new What If…? Idea I’ve been cooking up for a while, based on Fantastic Four Vol. 3 #15 from 1999.
(In this alternate universe, shortly after the Battle of New York when the universe was noticing Earth’s true capabilities, the Kree, still reeling from the destruction of the Civil War, decided to keep tabs on and plans to conquer the planet, seeing the possible threats of it if it could take on Thanos’ fleet. Due to this, Dar-Benn’s quest for the Quantum Bands began earlier in this universe, finding it on planet MB-418 sooner than expected, before turning her attention back to C-53 itself.
Upon learning of the collapse of S.H.I.E.L.D. via their sleeper cells and Ronan’s attack on Xandar and the Nova Corps, Supremor Dar-Benn, Yon-Rogg, and the rest of the Kree armada took the chance, invading the planet. Upon conquering all the Avengers, Eternals, and other potential threats, they colonized the planet for themselves, deeming it as their new Hala: Kree-Lar.
Ten years have passed as more Kree populated and took over the planet:
- Starforce used the fallen Avengers’ tech and weapons to become the planets new “heroes,” though winning over public perception was a long and arduous effort. - Yon-Rogg found an orphaned Kamala Khan during the search for the other Quantum Band, who he took pity on and brought in along with the Bangle. Khan became close friends with a bright young Kree Cadet, Mel-Varr, who she nicknamed “Kid Kree.” Both ended up joining Starforce, following close behind the orders of their commander. - Carol Danvers attempted to stop the invasion of her home, only to have her powers siphoned off by the Quantum Bands. Danvers, the Rambeaus, Nick Fury and their remaining allies went underground, forming a small resistance that grew over time with other oppressed civilians. Danvers also adopted the moniker of Warbird due to this outcome, fighting from the shadows without her powers. - Forces like Thanos, Ego, the Sovereign, the Nova Corps, the Asgardians, the Skrulls, and the Guardians of the Galaxy fell to Dar-Benn and the Kree Empire. After conquering all the rival worlds to their own, they quickly became the dominant reigning galactic force.
However, ten years after settling on Kree-Lar, tensions are growing not only against the Kree from the Resistance, but also from within their society. Dar-Benn is so committed to keeping the Kree in power that she has developed plans to build a mutagenic machine with the Bangles to empower all Kree with it’s energies, allowing them to rise further into power.
Faced with preserving their civilization or fighting for a better future, the members of Starforce become divided, questioning themselves and their actions. Yon-Rogg, whose resolve had been challenged by the recent events, wonders if this is really worth it for the “Good of all Kree.” He has also developed a deteriorating relationship with Dar-Benn, due to her adamance to keep the Kree strong at the expense of all other.
On a stealth mission to recover potential stolen data from the rebels, Yon-Rogg and Kamala encounter Carol among them, finding sick refugees with her, a good many of them Kree with a purple sickness apparently inflicted upon them. That’s when they realize the hazardous truth about Dar-Benn’s plans and what it could lead to if she goes through with it.
After the rest of Starforce arrives and sees what is it they were truly sent after, the team becomes divided and sides begin to form, with those like Kamala, Mel-Varr, and Bron-Char siding to protect the refugees and others like Att-Lass and Ty-Rone siding to carry out the Supremor’s orders. Eventually, after a tense standoff with Carol witnessing everything, Yon-Rogg eventually breaks it by shooting the weak spot in Att-Lass’s armor, before running off with his side and the rest of the refugees.
Upon arriving at the rebel base and linking up with the other insurgents, the rebel Starforce units work up a plan with the Resistance to prevent Dar-Benn’s plan. During this brainstorming session, Carol and Yon-Rogg have a very long an tense debate amongst themselves, deciding to put aside what happened to them in the past to stop the Supremor and save the planet.
After intiating their plan, the Resistance Starforce, with Carol, Monica Rambeau, and their allies infiltrate the the Capital Building where the Bangles are being kept. Upon arrival, they were ambushed, and captured, with the rest being thrown in the brig while Yon-Rogg and Carol were brought to witness Dar-Benn’s machinations. She activates the device, only for it to malfunction before their eyes.
Thankfully, having planned this, they had Mel-Varr break out of the prison with Kamala and sabotage the system’s satellite codes, inverting its power on itself and destroying the machine. Furious at this, Dar-Benn and her loyalists attack the rebels and a massive fight ensues, causing much chaos as everyone attempts to get the bands.
Kamala manages to get her Bangle back, as Yon-Rogg manages to throw the other to Carol to restore her powers. Dar-Benn grabs it before she catches it and fatally stabs her with her Cosmi-Rod. As Dar-Benn taunts her with the band, Carol takes the chance to her advantage, clasping it onto her arm and reactivating her powers, using them to clobber the enemy Kree.
As Dar-Benn attempted to escape, Carol gives Yon-Rogg the other Bangle to hold his own. After the two defeat the guards, a two-on-one fight ensues with the Supremor, which ends with them pinning her to the ground as she tempts them to kill her, telling them to do it for the Good of all Kree. Yon-Rogg hesitates for a moment, but instead breaks her Cosmi-Rod in two, deciding to be better for the good of everyone.
After Dar-Benn is taken in along with her loyalists, Yon-Rogg, Kamala, Mel-Varr, and Bron-Char all agree to aid Carol and the Resistance with the relief efforts, hoping to build a better future together. The New Starforce officially embraces their role as the next Avengers, protecting the Galaxy they know and helping rebuild it into a better one.)
Sorry if the bio’s a bit lengthy, but I thought it would be a fun idea for Season 3 of What If…? coming sometime soon. And of course, before I forget, here’s the roster for this versions of Starforce:
Dar-Benn/Supremor Ty-Rone/Seism Att-Lass/Titanium Man Yon-Rogg/Magnetron Bron-Char/Captain Cosmos Kamala Khan/Stormranger Mel-Varr/Kid Kree
IDK, let me know what you guys think of this! Hope you like it!

Kamala Khan: Processing Anticipatory Grief
One of the elements of Saladin Ahmed's run on Magnificent Ms. Marvel that I especially enjoyed was its portrayal themes of like anticipatory grief, burnout, and anger through the plot Kamala Khan struggling to process and come to terms with her Abu’s terminal illness.
Anticipatory grief serves as the driving focus Ahmed’s story, as it gives rise Kamala’s other two inner conflicts. Anticipatory grief is a form of grieving which occurs before the death of a loved one, and can sometimes result in more severe symptoms than normal grief.
The catalyst for Kamala’s anticipatory grief is her father being stricken with a rare terminal disease that is believed to be incurable. This event coincides with Kamala acquiring her Kree Stormranger Nanosuit and both her parents having their memories of her secret identity erased following their previous adventure on a distant alien planet.
The symptoms of anticipatory grief which Kamala most heavily displays throughout the narrative include sadness, poor concentration & exhaustion, a sense of helplessness, and most especially, anger.
The reason why anger takes center stage in place of other stressful emotions derived from anticipatory grief is because Kamala is also suffering from intense burnout due to her struggling to balance both her life as a superhero and being supportive for her dying father. Burnout is a state of chronic stress and frustration which can manifest itself in the form of chronic fatigue, impaired concentration & attention, and increased irritability. Kamala is shown to be physically and emotionally exhausted throughout the “Stormranger” arc of Magnificent Ms. Marvel not only because of her lack of sleep from superheroing, but also from a combination of struggling to adapt to her new circumstances and her new costume sapping her of energy to power itself.
Impaired concentration and attention is evident not just with Kamala falling asleep in class as shown earlier, but also being so overwhelmed by her feelings of grief that she briefly forgets important stuff like Iron Man texting her about a possible cure immediately before her Abu collapsed and was hospitalized. Kamala was so consumed with anger and sadness that she completely forgot about Stark’s text before he himself arrived at the hospital to remind her.
But the most evident aspect of Kamala’s burnout is her increased irritability, as is presented not just in her more agitated behavior towards friends like Nakia or civilians like the doctor Mr. Hyde chased, but also in her becoming more aggressive in superhero fights.
Which leads into the final major theme of the “Stormranger” arc, the dangers of losing oneself to unmanaged anger. Specifically, there is a distinction between helpful grief anger and damaging grief anger. The former is a healthy and necessary part of the grieving process whereas the latter can bring harm to both oneself and to others. While Kamala’s feelings of anger caused by her Abu’s disease and her wanting to express said anger are perfectly natural and understandable, it becomes a problem when she uncontrollably lashes out at others. This is most evident when the A.I. Kamala’s Kree Stormranger Nanosuit (which serves as a physical metaphor for unmanaged aggression) takes advantage of Kamala’s agitated state during battle and unwillingly forces her to nearly kill both Discord & Mr. Hyde.
Kamala's extreme anger on display might seem out-of-character at first, but her behavior makes perfect sense when viewed through the lens of mismanaged grief anger. This can be caused by bottling up more intense feelings despite appearing normal on the surface, consequently resulting in more intense outbursts. In Magnificent Ms. Marvel the reader witnesses Kamala consistently trying to remain calm & supportive to her friends and family, and letting out her grief to others, whilst simultaneously being forced to constantly meet others expectations and unable to express important parts of herself. Which paradoxically results in to Kamala’s increasing state of agitation and anger.
But Ahmed’s story also demonstrates the importance of being allowed to feel and recognize said anger, but to manage it in appropriate ways and not become so overwhelmed by it that we forget who we are. This is perfectly summarized in Kamala’s narration about needing to retreat into our shells but also needing to break out of them when said shells risk destroying us, and Doctor Strange’s narration about how what matters isn’t preventing the future but how we react to it.
Furthermore, when Kamala finally recognizes Stormranger Nanosuit’s negative influence over her, Kamala not only chooses to do the right thing and by staying true to her moral code instead of giving into the worst possible version of herself, but also acknowledges her anger in a more constructive manner rather than ignoring or abandoning it, as she makes her feelings of resentment towards villains like Mr. Hyde and Discord perfectly clear, but still does whatever she can to protect them from being murdered.
Additionally, the "Stormranger" arc’s two primary antagonists, the titular Stormranger and Mr. Hyde, serve as both dark reflections of Kamala‘s own struggles as well as physical manifestations of uncontrolled rage. Both villains violently lash out at anyone they perceive as a threat or aggressor, and when they’re unable to direct that rage at said threat, they’ll just randomly direct it at a new target until their own rage is what ultimately tiers or burns them out. Burnout is ultimately what results in Stormranger’s downfall as the suit’s systems overclock and she self-destructs.
Overall, I really admire the in-depth & subtle ways which Saladin Ahmed conveys themes of anticipatory grief, burnout and anger throughout the “Stormranger” arc of Magnificent Ms. Marvel!
Kamala's arc was one that I could heavily relate to on a personally level, as I had then-just recently lost my Nana to Parkinson's Disease as this series was being released, and was struggling with similar feelings of grief and anger like Kamala was here.

Hi!!! Bronzegunner on his main blog, here-
I'm sorry i get so silly about Richard Rider and USM Sam and just Novas in general </3 But i think it's very fun that USM Sam is just Richie but smaller...
because it has horrible implications for Sam given everything Richie has been through lolol (buncha wars, jacked up on nova force and almost driven insane, cancerverse, dragged out of the cancerverse lol)
which you know- you think they wouldn't happen at all to begin with, but here is a grown up Sam from a later "Bad End" sort of episode wearing Richie's Nova Force Suit, which- implies things.
(this is the suit Rich wore when he was holding all the nova force ever, and it almost drove him insane and he also almost exploded a couple times)
So i think if 616 Sam catches onto the fact that USM Sam was essentially him if he was like Rich he'd possibly be a little scared for what the future could hold for USM Sam knowing about Rich and his you know... straight up death-
also, on a happier note- the USM episodes are very fun, Sam and the guardians have a very sweet dynamic</3 must watch episodes if you ever get around to watching season 2 fr
sorry for the long ask !! one last reminder that in USM Gamora promised to never set foot on earth again and then did anyway<3 and when confronted about this by nick fury she just smiled and said "I lied."
!!!!
This has given me so many ideas and questions.
Yeah, I'm definitely watching season 2, I only just sat down to watch USM at all. Am on episode 2 of the second season.
My very funny quirky obsession is to take one version of a character. And then shove them towards a different version of them. And I will be doing that. Bc these two are exceptionally suited for that.
616 Sam would be worried about USM Sam's past AND future. He's set on the track of Rich Rider levels of nonsense AND he doesn't have a mom. Or Kaelynn??? Nightmare scenario.
It's cute that he has a better relationship with Rocket than in the start off comics. Obsessed with that. Guardians of the Galaxy family???? Am so excited to get to that point. Yesss Gamora we stan.
I think the most impactful part of 616 Sam's arc so far was his helmet being taken away. It'd be interesting to see how USM Sam would react to that. There's a lot of soul-searching and inferiority complexes rearing their head there that would be a good place to be met with this. I mean, not good for him. But good for me.
#in my mind im imagining the champs going to the usm universe to find something#and helmet-less sam comes along out of spite#maybe either taking kamala's stormranger suit or one of riri's iron suits in case of an emergency#and then it spirals from there#sam alexander#nova

Big Heroine Uno Concept Art: Stormranger Nanosuit
Locked in a creative trance, the boy genius narrowed his eyes as he concentrated on the holographic monitor. Making his final adjustments on the programming, he rolled back from his seat and grinned, “And that’s it! Now onto the test phases for the suit’s nano-induction sequence!”
He looked behind him towards Karmi’s lab, frowning to see it was still empty and that his fellow prodigy hadn’t returned yet. He pursed his lips in contemplation. Eagerly, he grinned, “I... I can’t wait! I’ll just have to start the tests.”
He looked towards his monitor, “This is Hiro Hamada. This is test number one of the Stormranger Nano-Induction Sequence.”
Just as the robotics prodigy had hoped, strips of vibranium-composite nanomachines formed around his body and created a well-fitted... dress around him. He blushed, “M-Maybe I really should’ve just had Karmi try it on...”
“Nice dress, Hiro.”
The boy genius squeaked in a higher octave than he would’ve wanted, blushing embarrassedly towards Karmi who had just entered the lab. “K-Karmi! I was actually hoping you were here earlier so you could test it on yourself!”
Karmi couldn’t help but giggle catching him in the act, “No, no, it looks like you’re handling that.” She was still very honored that he was dedicating himself to create an armor for her alter-ego.
Hiro’s face flushed as he looked down at the Stormranger nanosuit that seemed to move very well and responsively to his body. “Yeah, well now I’m wishing you didn’t walk in... Can you... umm... look away?”
Karmi chuckled, “Sorry, Professor Granville told me quite strictly that I am to observe you when you are conducting your testing!” The boy could only grumble at her, quickly running to shut down the video testing feed.
Here’s a sneak peak of a Big Heroine Uno scene aha. Well, never have I ever thought I’d write or draw Hiro in a dress but well, it’s for a good and just cause lol. Ms. Marvel’s Stormranger suit had to make its way to the Uno Reverse AU, it’s just too cool and frankly, Karmi is going to need it... We’ll get to see how she looks in it, of course!

This suit in particular is v reminiscent to the stormranger nanosuit. If other parts of the suit except for the lightning bolt had a bit more shine to it I could totally see it being that
Princess Carol and her entourage
#it's also diff from the one her mom made her I think#maybe this one was made with alien tech??#either way that's a kick-ass suit

Saladin Ahmed and Minkyu Jung wrap up their run on Ms. Marvel this week, with issue #18 — or issue #75 with “legacy numbering.” This issue sees all of Kamala Khan’s family drama come to head just as Stormranger (kind of her version of Venom — it’s a suit she used to wear that now wants to kill her) shows up to ruin the homecoming dance. This is the final issue of this run, but I’m sure Ms. Marvel will be back.
See what else is arriving in comic shops this week.

I want to write a fic about Gabe getting the Stormranger nanosuit. Technically speaking, he should be able to integrate w it bc the Kree-genetics were required only to get past the biohaze initially set up. Afaik humans should be able to get past it now.
now, the Stormranger is out for revenge. It needs someone in Kamala's vicinity who can be compelled to murder her. And for some reason it decides Gabe is the ideal candidate for this job.
Only for Gabe to be like "hey wtf" bc as far as he knew, he'd been living the most normal life with the most normal friends and now he has to rehabilitate the murder robot in secret to not disrupt the normalcy (that literally doesn't exist)
