The northern red-bellied snake (Storeria occipitomaculata occipitomaculata) is a shy, attractive snake in the family Colubridae. Distinguishing features include three yellow spots that form a pale "collar" behind the head shields, strongly keeled dorsal scales, two dark stripes running along the back, and a striking, coral-colored underbelly. Red-bellied snakes prefer to live in moist, cool woods at the edges of bogs and marshes, where they find a steady supply of their primary diet - slugs, snails and worms. So of course, Cranberry Glades - where these photos were taken - provides the perfect habitat for them.

Coluber constrictor foxii (blue racer) Diadophis punctatus edwardsii (northern ringneck snake) Heterodon platirhinos (eastern hognose snake) Lampropeltis triangulum (eastern milksnake) Nerodia sipedon sipedon (northern watersnake) Opheodrys vernalis (smooth greensnake) Pantherophis spiloides (gray ratsnake) Pantherophis vulpinus (eastern foxsnake) Regina septemvittata (queensnake) Sistrurus catenatus (Massasauga rattler) Storeria dekayi (Dekay's brownsnake) Storeria occipitomaculata occipitomaculata (northern redbelly snake) Thamnophis butleri (Butler's garter snake) Thamnophis saurita septentrionalis (northern ribbon snake) Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis (red-sided garter snake) Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis (eastern garter snake)
But I've only seen the northern watersnake (like three times, and only once up close), Dekay's brownsnake (four times), and eastern garter snake (lots).
Snakes are soooo elusive, like I've only seen three of our native species out in the open anywhere I've been to in this region and we have a lot more than that.

Look at this tiny friend we found while hiking in Ontario! This little bitty Storeria occipitomaculata, a northern red-bellied snake, slithered right across the trail and then kindly paused to allow us to take some photos. I didn't want to stress this tiny pal for a photo so you'll have to trust me when when I say that they have a bright red/orange tummy.
Today is the last day of my vacation! I'm heading home now, looking forward to seeing my babies and getting back to a regular posting schedule.

Crowley’s snake form is a Red bellied snake (Storeria occipitomaculata).
Tumblr media
These snakes can usually be found anywhere and are usually non-venomous.
This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be careful.
If you approach the non venomous type snake and it assumes you’re a threat it will flatten its body and play dead, some display a lip curling behavior that exposes the teeth.
They rarely bite when captured by humans.
They feed off of slugs and other such small creatures.
Anyways, that’s your little snake factoid out of the way. I just think some of this stuff could be cute in a fanfic lmao.

First Red-Bellied Snake I have ever found!!! I also found it in an area in NY where they are not reported to occur :) needless to say I am quite stoked. While these are common in a lot of areas(even in NY) they are not common at all where I am. Red-Bellied Snake - Storeria occipitomaculata

Northern Redbelly Snake (Storeria occipitomaculata occipitomaculata) by Steve Collins Via Flickr: This tiny snake is one of the smallest I've encountered. Apparently they eat earthworms, slugs, and soft-bodied insects. This is a new one - a neonate. Crater of Diamonds SP, Pike Co., AR
