I made the mistake of watching this video and here’s a list of the things and false claims that annoyed me:

The sheer patronizing tone of the narrator (below you’ll see some examples)

“Just look at your pet in the eyes. Would you ever consider wearing their fur on your body? So why any other animan should be different?” Because there is a fundamental difference between a pet and an animal one has no emotional relation to? And also because cats and dogs are not used in the fur industry?!

“Just think about how weird it is to walk around in another being's skin? Gross. Don’t do it. Not when faux fur is readily available.” May I inform you that humans have been doing this for CENTURIES and it was never considered gross; just a nice alternative to freezing to death because they were not granted fur of their own? And that fur, opposed to cotton an wool, provides way better insulation from cold, perhaps? What exactly is gross about fur, when the animal from which it came was farmed specifically for the purpose of providing meat and is already dead? It is “gross” to wear its skin but ok to eat it for dinner? 

“Save yourself the uncomfortable feeling of walking in someone else’s hair”. Great, wigs and hair extensions are cancelled too.

“Wearing real fur is extremely limiting. Why? Because it’s real! Real fur doesn’t come in exotic colors or funky patterns.” Have you never heard of fur dyes or you are underestimating our intelligence?

“Faux furs are cheaper” That one is actually true. However that is also an advantage of real fur, because the sheer price (which is several thousand dollars) drops the demand and consequently erases the environmental concerns. 

Speaking of environmental concerns, the narrator conveniently avoids to state that real fur is biodegradable whereas faux fur is just... plastic and not only it is of much lesser quality but it also pollutes a great deal.

The real point of this video should not be “don’t do something that humans have done for centuries” but “how one should combine the modern fashion trends that require fur with sustainable resources and humane methods of making fur”. I am not talking about hunting wild animals to take their fur here like foxes (speaking of foxes, in england they hunt them down for sport; not even for their fur...). Most real fur and leather comes from animals like cows and boars, which are farmed for their milk and meat and would probably be slaughtered anyway. Why not make something out of their skin instead of throwing it away? If that’s the case, we shouldn’t wear wool either, since it comes from sheep that are farmed for their milk and meat anyway and will be slaughtered down the road.

“Faux fur lasts longer” Well duh, it is made out of plastic, after all. That doesn’t mean that real furs don’t last long, though. If storerd and taken care of properly, they can last for generations, much like every vintage piece of clothing. Ever wonder why clothes were much more expensive a few decades ago? Well, that’s because they were more durable and high-quality than today’s clothes which are mostly plastic and less natural fibres. But, since we are talking about furs... Have you ever tried to wash a faux fur coat? You’ll soon find out that it is impossible for it to keep its original shape or fluffiness after some rounds of washing; unlike real fur, which, if taken care of properly, keeps its smoothness and heavy coat way longer. Nad after all, fashion crazes come and go, and although one pays less for faux fur it isn’t likely that they will stand the test of time. Real fur styles, however, are timeless; therefore, a better investment. 

“if you wear faux furs, you are in good company, because lots of celebs are in the movement too”. Well, if you choose to do something just because a celebrity does it, you really need to reconsider your purpose in this world, since you cancel out your uniqueness and ability to think for yourself. Say that celebrities suddenly decide to wear their panties as hats; does it mean you have to do it too?! Also, who wears what is TOTALLY UNRELATED the point of the fur discussion.

“Odors are almost impossible to get out of fur; and don’t even think about getting wet”. That one is an outrageous LIE. Anyone who owns a real fur coat (including myself would be able to attest that fur is naturally water-resistant, because its sole purpose is to keep the skin of the animal wearing it warm and dry. The water particles do not reach the base layers of the fur and they evaporate much faster. As for odors, one would do what any reasonable person would when handling an expensive piece of clothing: hand it over for dry cleaning, of course. The people working there are trained to deal with real fur and real leather and will make it clean as new.

“If you get caught out in the rain, you have to take your coat to a professional immediately” WELL, DUH; one would do the same with ANY piece of expensive clothing and even without it getting wet in the first place.

My point here is not that “if you don’t wear real fur you are a loser”(much like most people do when making this sort of videos which basically send the message “if you wear real fur instead of faux fur you are being immoral”). If one cannot afford real fur -which has always been a luxury item, after all- faux fur is a good alternative; but on the other hand, so is a quality cardigan or wool coat. Trying to imply that the quality of faux fur is better than real fur and that the act of dressing up in real fur is immoral is misleading in itself.
