Thanks to the use of magic and a certain power player in Los Angeles owing her, Jewel lives a huge house in Hollywood ( which should raise a lot of questions given that she has the most unsteady salaries of all time ) and it looks exactly like one would expect coming from a woman like her.

First storey: Here’s where all the entertainment happens. There’s a big kitchen with an island in the middle, a large dinner table and bar and a spacious living room with large television and impressive sound system. This space holds her most prized possession and that’s her feature wall, plastered with her vinyl collection ( some signed and others not ). The staircase leading to the second storey has a storage space beneath, but it’s completely empty so Jewel can fit in because the wall it’s against holds a portal ( that can only be opened by her blood ) that opens up a secret room in the house and that’s where all that magic related things are kept for the sake of safety and keeping up appearances.

Second storey: There are four bedrooms on this level. The master ( obviously hers ) has a joined walk in robe and joining ensuite. Down the hall are two guest rooms with an ensuite joining the two. One of these rooms is permanently Deacon’s so there’s always something of his there , whether he’s actually staying at her home or not, but the other room is kept as clean s possible when other people are rooming there. The last guest room ( still filled with Deacon’s things ) is at the furthest end of the hall. There’s also a small office room upstairs, but as she uses a laptop it’s hardly ever used other than for storage space.

Backyard: Exit through the living room and there’s a barbecue and sitting space near a pool and spa, the spa covered by shade from luscious trees. In the very back of the yard there’s a shed where all the tools to take care of the yard is kept and next to that is a small herb garden of sorts, something that looks very out of place to the rest of the property.

Garage: It’s a double that houses her 1972 Harley Davidson, 1988 Ford Thunderbird and is her storage place where she keeps everything that she doesn’t want cluttering the house. if she didn’t need that storage space for the vehicles she’d have it converted into another spare room or smaller living room.

Note: The bedrooms mentioned are the constants, as she's known to magically renovate and add / remove bedrooms depending on her needs for how many people are staying with her at any given time while being able to keep the exterior of the house looking completely as it should.

Recollections

I am not the original Woolven Traveler.

This past month has been very turbulent for me as my father had recently passed away. We have become very close in these last few years where we have become a source of support for each other, even though he had been living in Spain while I resided in Los Angeles.

I had the immense blessing and honor to be by his side in his last moments, one of his last words to me was about how proud he was with who I was as a person. I told him that I owed my maturity to him since I looked up to him my entire life and through those final hours.

Upon hearing that, he shed his last tears in this world, as I shared a few of my own. He then pointed to his belongings which I gladly retrieved. He asked me to take his collection of keys to pull out a bright purple one. I did. He then told me the address of a storage unit he had set aside to which he requested that I visit afterwards.

He left this world in courage and peace, as I remained holding his hand with this key in between.

The next day, I visited this storage unit, to which his most precious belongings were found. There were various artifacts, but one particular small box was found which contained various memory cards and hard disks which I retrieved and opened once I came to his house. It was his photography collection, thousands of images which were taken over the course of several decades. All of which he had now given to me to enjoy and share.

Having now entrusted his illustrious and rich dynasty to me, I now have what I hold to be the most valuable of his material things: his memories and recollections of a life of happiness and love.

Now it is my joy to share some of these images so that his memory can remain even beyond my own lifetime.

How to Read the Tree Leaves

A Little Knowledge of Botany can be helpful, even if you’re an Amateur Gardener. Here are a few things you should know about what happens in the fall.

What’s going on out there — and why? Some version of that is the perennial question on any inquisitive gardener’s mind.

Fall provides plenty of dramatic subject matter along those lines, beyond the changing leaves. What is it exactly that gives the foliage of deciduous trees the signal to let go (except in the case of contrarians like certain oaks and beeches)?

Although we call them evergreens, the inner needles of many conifers show us otherwise each autumn. Why do they turn noticeably yellow and brown, in preparation for shedding?

And as the deep, cold of a Northern winter approaches, what gardener does not wonder how dormant buds and other tender-looking parts of plants survive intact?

A hunger to explain such phenomena led me to a beginning botany course and its accompanying textbook. In the decades since, I have revisited those lessons time and again.

Apparently, I am not alone in my search for answers. The textbook used in that course, Brian Capon’s “Botany for Gardeners: An Introduction to the Science of Plants,” has sold more than 260,000 copies since it was published in 1990. In August, the fourth edition was released.

And the course itself, Introduction to Plant Science, is now given year-round at the New York Botanical Garden, virtually and in person, with up to 12 sessions a year and as many as 20 students in each. It is one of more than 700 annual offerings in subjects as diverse as botanical illustration, landscape design, psychedelic mushrooms and paleobotany — all part of the nation’s largest plant-focused adult continuing-education program.

Perhaps my biggest takeaway from the classes I attended: Putting some botany into our horticulture can help improve results in the garden. But best of all, it deepens our appreciation of how plants live their hard-working lives.

Batten Down the Hatches: Dormancy

Dormancy is a “virtual metabolic standstill,” wrote Dr. Capon, who died last year but was a professor of botany at California State University, Los Angeles, for decades.

In the temperate zone, “it’s an ecological adaptation for living in a cold environment, to survive the cold,” said Regina Alvarez, an assistant professor of biology at Dominican University New York, in Rockland County, and one of New York Botanical Garden’s botany instructors. “Depending on the life cycle and the form of the plant, they do it in different ways.”

Herbaceous plants have two choices: They can complete their life cycles and leave only their seeds behind for the following year (annuals), or their aboveground portions can die back, leaving the roots and storage organs like rhizomes, bulbs and corms to carry on when favorable conditions resume (biennials and perennials).

But woody plants can’t completely tuck in like that. Even those that drop their leaves as part of their overall defense have parts that remain exposed. Those include organs as small and seemingly vulnerable as the buds of next year’s leaves and flowers, or the growing tips of twigs and branches where elongation will resume again come spring.

In preparation, the undeveloped flowers, leaves or shoots may become encased in overlapping bud scales every autumn. Some species may also coat the covered buds in “a thick resin to protect them from the cold and wind,” said Leslie Day, the author of urban-focused natural history guides, including “Field Guide to the Street Trees of New York City,” and a plant-science instructor at the botanical garden.

It’s not just the buds that benefit from the waterproof sealant. Some insects do, too. Honey bees, for instance, mix the resin they scrape from bud scales and other plant parts with their saliva to produce propolis, which they use as a glue to seal cracks in their hives, Dr. Day said.

Another unexpected application for the antimicrobial sealant: “To embalm large intruders like mice and wasps that are too heavy to carry out after they sting them to death,” she said. Noted: Nature provides — and it wastes nothing.

The Coloring Up, and the Letting Go

We watched the recent show, as shorter days and cooler weather triggered the breakdown of chlorophyll, the predominant pigment in most leaves. What was unmasked are known as the accessory pigments, Dr. Alvarez said, including yellow and orange carotenoids that were there all along, in a supporting role. Although hidden during the growing season, they were helping with photosynthesis.

More oc octobers I neglected to upload here. These are my main characters. The original universe was based on rock and metal genres, but it's expanded to encompass basically every mundane character I've created in other cities. Get ready for some longass explanations.

80's-90's rock OCs:

PUSSYWHIP: Los Angeles. shock rock, cock rock, glam punk. Formed from the ashes of THE PENETRATORS when Vicky was kicked out for being an insane control freak. Vicky VD on backing vox and lead guitar, Angus is puppeteered as the "frontman" on rhythm guitar and vox. Eddie "Dirty Sanchez" is the deadman on bass. Skeets on drums.

THE PENETRATORS: Los Angeles. arena rock, cock rock, pop metal. Originally formed with Vicky on guitar, he was replaced with Benny and Jet after the spaghetti incident. Soon after, their sound went more radio-friendly and they found more success than Vicky's future ventures. Jizzy on Vox, Johnny on rhythm guitar. Benny "Donut" and Jet on lead and rhythm guitar. Jack on drums.

ANGELRAPER: Tampa, Florida. speed/thrash/death metal. This ill-named band was created by Tomathan when he was in high school track with Ricky and Alexi. He couldn't think of anything more sacreligious than an angel who assaults the children of god. They're still more of a garage band than a serious endeavor, but they have fun in the storage shed they call a practice room. Tommy "Angelraper" on vox and bass. Alexi "Corpsehumper" on guitar. Ricky "Pretty Ricky" "Tacofucker" (it was late and a dare ok) on drums.

90's mundane guys:

Prophet and Priest. Prophet used to be a musician in the 70's-80's. He was injured in an accident (hairspray, fire), and became very depressed and traumatized. Stopped making music. When Priest was a kid, he was Prophet's biggest fan. Now he's all grown up with a job n' shit, and he finds his favorite musician living in a dumpster next to his workplace. Homosexuality and cult-like brainwashing ensues. Nice!

2000's mundane guys:

Ollie and Basile and Liv. Boston, Brookyln, or San Francisco depending on my mood. Ollie and Liv are the same person in different bodies. Basile is their grouchy neighbor. You should know them by now. You can read more about them on my site.

Bobert and Chad. San Francisco. They go to SFSU and room together. Bobert works at Urban Outfitters, dresses as an 80's goth (he was born in the wrong decade dammit!!!) and is a creative writing major who writes erotic fanfiction as a hobby. Chad is a computer science major. They don't understand each other much, but they're good friends.

Ye Olde Dayz

Witchhunter and Witch. Somewhere in olde Germany. The witchhunter killed the witch's family. The witch reprogrammed him and repurposed his body to serve her. Lock Bumping - A Sign of the Times?

I grew up in a small town in the 1940s and I don't ever remember ever feeling a need to lock our doors. First of all, most of us were poor, so we didn't have a lot of valuable laying around for the taking. But we live in a different world now.

We have had 4 burglaries in our neighborhood since July. Two of them were directly behind our house. So I had already been thinking of ways to keep our home safe. I ordered some door alarms that would deter someone from breaking in. We put in security lights. And I was feeling pretty good until I read the article about Lock Bumping.

I never cease to be amazed at all the different methods a thief will use to gain entry into your home. I thought I had heard everything. Do you even know what Lock Bumping is? Well, I sure didn't, so I started doing some research to know exactly what it is and how it works.

Now if you are not familiar with it, you need to be. The fact is that most of our houses have 2 to 3 doors that have locks. That probably doesn't even include PVC doors, garage doors and storage shed doors that are secured only by cylinder locks.

What Exactly is Lock Bumping?

In a nutshell, using this technique, criminals use a specially-cut key which is inserted and knocked on, causing all the pin tumblers in the lock to split and the lock opens. As I understand it, it works best on cylinder locks. Most older homes are very vulnerable because cylinder locks are used. Unfortunately, that includes most of us. And here's the crazy part, there are many "how to" videos on YouTube. So anyone with a computer has access to Lock Bumping.

An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure

So how does the average homeowner protect themselves? Here is some important information to have to make sure our homes are safe..

The only real answer is to ensure that all your cylinder locks are of good quality -minimum of 5-6 pins and preferably some kind of sidebar mechanism, and are sold as bump proof. This way you will be covering yourself against not only lock bumpers but also those who have a little more skill and may try to pick the lock in other ways.

There is a product called Pickbuster. It is a solution which is squirted into your cylinder locks and makes them safe from lock bumping. It coats the pins inside the lock and prevents them bouncing when an attempt is made to bump the lock.

Check the locks to all the entrances to your house. Are they all cylinder locks? If so, consider changing them to either a cylinder lock or a lever door lock. A lever lock cannot be bumped.

If you have to use a cylinder lock replacement, quality is really important. Most manufacturers offer 'bump proof ' cylinder locks and this is an option that you should seriously consider.

Here's a scary thought. Most of us have sliding doors or patio doors. These are prime targets for being bumped because often times they are often mass produced and tend to have small poor quality locks. Stats show that over 50% of these kind of doors can be bump locked.

If you happen to live in an apartment, you probably already know that the locks have been Master keyed, therefore they are easier to 'bump' open. The only real solution is to replace them with high quality 'bump proof' locks. Granted, it's an added expense, but which is more expensive, a new lock or a break in?

Here's a little known fact. Did you know that factory made doors of any kind tend to be fitted with the same kind of locks? Someone whose business is to steal your personal belongings would know this and be looking for that particular kind of door.

Will the Insurance Company Pay if it's not Forced Entry?

The answer to that is yes, no and maybe. It depends on the insurance company you are dealing with. However there is a caveat we should be aware of. In order for an insurance company to issue a claim, there has to be evidence of forced entry. When a door is bump locked, it won't appear to have been tampered with. Even worse, a lot of times the thief leaves the door open when they leave. So then as a home owner you wonder, did I leave the door open? This would appear to be an accident to an insurance company.

Then you find yourself in the situation of not only having your personal property taken, but if the insurance company chooses not to issue a claim, you have no way to get reimbursement for your stolen items. Not a great scenario to be faced with.

If someone is determined to break into your house, they will try it. That's even more reason we need to get all the facts and make a decision on what we need to do to keep our home and property safe. Here are some things you can do:

lucifer spends months trying to get me to open up to him and be....well, anything.

i meet his quips head on and i always have a joke at the ready and, honestly he does like that. he likes my wit and my charm and that i know how to schmooze and placate when needed.

but thats not what made him attracted to me, thats not what made him change a whole weekend’s worth of plans to crash my art gallery.

he came because there was something more beneath that, something deeper and darker and he needed to know what it was.

and he figured he’d find out in a weekend and call it done and add another notch to his bed post, but i gave him nothing. i gave him a practiced smile and attention through subtly ground teeth and all it did was make him more desperate for the truth.

and then finally, FINALLY, after what feels like forever to him, something that is no mean feat considering...

finally he gets a peek behind the curtain.

it is 18 months after i have met him, and 6 weeks after i have disappeared into the wilds of washington state. he’s pulled in every favor and every resource to find me, and I end up having to head back to LA when he finally decides to just harass one of my biggest clients non stop.

and it is the first time i drag him back to my cabin.

and it is small and it is two bedrooms.

it has a wrap around porch and a fireplace, and a grill out back, and a fire pit in the yard and a storage shed beyond the swinging bench. at night you can hear the river and the wildlife, and it is so far removed from los angeles that for a moment he thinks his heart has stopped.

i tell him i bought and paid for the land outright and that i had both hands in building the cabin myself.

i tell him how my grandparents* had a house in the south carolina mountains and how they’d built it brick by brick by themselves and how i’d always been so resentful of my family for letting it be sold.

and he asks, with a frown and a raised eyebrow and an awkward chuckle why, why someone like me would slum it out in the middle of the woods.

and i look at him levelly and tell him over the rim of my whiskey glass that it is because i plan to retire as early as possible so that i may drink myself to death in the peace and quiet and for the first time in a long time,

he doesn’t know how to respond.

so i fill the void for us and i explain how i was late getting started on an education and a career, and how i willingly threw myself into a viper’s pit to get what i want.

i tell him how i made a career and money out of real estate in florida and how i skirted laws and still clung to my morals with a pinkie. i stole from the rich and i screwed them over and i lied and schemed and i went to court time and again and time and again they had nothing on me.

i tell him how once i hit the correct number i put money into bigger properties, how i stole it right from under their fucking noses and gave it to people who would otherwise have nothing, and i tell him how i used vacation rentals to fund my photography and my art, and how when that wasn’t enough i used to the profit from both to seek out my escape in the PNW.

and finally as the sun begins to rise over the mountains and stream through the trees he realizes that i never truly plan for a future.

i plan for today and tomorrow and everything else is just interest.

he has fallen in love with a human that planned on dying years ago, and now has to struggle through every waking moment knowing it didn’t fucking go as planned, and he has no idea what to do with that.

for once,

for once it’s not about him, and he knows he shouldn’t be so excited about it.

but fuck, is he ever.

*eventually, some time later, i tell him how my grandparents were actually my great aunt and uncle. i tell him how so many relatives died before i was born, and how my nana/great aunt took a promise to her sister seriously and how she decided she would be the nana i did not have, and how that would be all i ever knew until such a time as i could understand the how and why.

i tell him how when she died when i was nine going on ten, and how i didn’t understand and i didn’t cry about it for almost a decade.

it is always over a bottle of whiskey when i tell him these things, and sometimes he wonders if it is not taking advantage, but he brushes it aside because he’s so desperate to know.

i tell him how my great uncle once slammed the door to his new house, with his new wife, two years after my nana had died, right in my face and he notices finally the way i say “nana” always, and “leo”, always.

he notices how i do that with many people.

he notices there are some people who are barely more than a name, names he takes careful notes of, and how there are people that are more than names.

he notices so many things he never mentions.

he notices and sometimes when he’s alone by himself staring up at the ceiling and listening to the never ending LA traffic,

he wishes he’d known sooner.

he wishes he’d been given the foresight his beloved father has; has and ignores.

he wishes for so many things he never tells me.

we are a ship that is based on secrets and half truths, and we will never tell each other we are each aware of it.
