This is where the services of removalists in North Sydney come in handy, particularly in the bustling area of North Sydney. Let's delve into how these professionals can streamline your relocation journey.

CBRM takes ownership of financially struggling North Sydney, N.S., area
Cape Breton regional councillors have voted in favour of assuming ownership of a North Sydney, N.S., arena facing financial woes.
The Emera Centre Northside is debt free but the group running it said they couldn’t keep up with operating costs.
On Tuesday night, Cape Breton Regional Municipality Council voted 10-1 in favour of taking over the facility.
“It was something we didn’t want to do but we were in a position where we were going to run out of money and wouldn’t be able to pay our bills,” said Llyod Wilkie, chair of the arena’s board, in an interview with CTV News Wednesday.
“It was just a necessary thing, even though we didn’t really want to go that way and we’re very pleased with the decision by council.”
He says everyday users of the rink won’t notice much of a difference once it changes hands. He says it will continue to operate for minor and high school hockey and recreational skating.
Besides an ice rink, the facility includes an indoor walking track, change rooms, storage space for local hockey teams and a canteen.
The facility’s power bill is about $220,000 a year, said Wilkie in an interview last month.
The centre was built 12 years ago with $12 million in government grants, some community fundraising and loans that have now been paid off.
It’s home to the Northside Minor Hockey Association, which has 320 players and requires most of the ice time.
Without the centre, the association said it wouldn’t be able to operate its programs.
Besides hockey, the facility is home to community meetings, concerts, school events and trade shows.

Research and Brainstorming
It was clear from the client brief that the history of Northshore is a very important part of this project. My first goal for this then was to do some research and learn about the history of Northshore. All the research I've acquired below is from the one source. Further research is required. A general overview of Northshore:
According to northshorebrisbane.com.au Northshore as well as the Hamilton area were known by the Turrbal and Jagera people as Yerrol or Yurrol (referring to rainforest vine). The area was described as being very thick scrubland and hosted a variety of plants and animals.
One of the main points of research that kept popping up was the use of the area being a place of resources. From prior research on Indigenous history of Brisbane (specifically Victoria Park/Barrambin) I know that Brisbane was a place of gathering for many of the Indigenous populations in the surrounding areas. The Kabi peoples of the Sunshine Coast and Bribie Island/Woorin would visit and use Yerrol as a place of gathering resources (hunting and fishing) whilst they stayed.
One thing I found very interesting in this research is that according to this site, many of the Aboriginal travel routes were used and expanded upon by English settlers. These routes were well traversed by the First Nations peoples and some of them have even remained much the same to this day (Kingsford Smith Drive).
Many areas of the river also acted as a crossing point between the North and South side as when the tide went out the water became very shallow. These shallow areas were deepened with the use of dredging and many of the sand banks were swept away.
By the 1900's many of the Indigenous populations were incarcerated and the area of Northshore was no longer known as Yerrol. Areas in and around Eagle farm became farming lands that grew rice and grain, which was frequently exported to Sydney. Hamilton, in it's prime location, became a wharf, exporting goods to Sydney and London, as well as a connection to Bulimba by ferry.
Post WWI the facilities were upgraded to cold storage for cheese's and butter that was to be sent to England. During WWII the Hamilton wharfs were used regularly by the Navy for repairs. After the war the wharfs were used for the growing trade industry, bulk shipping resources. By the mid 1900's the Hamilton became the first container terminal in Brisbane.
The early 1990's was the first step in Northshore's urban renewal was underway. Since then bike paths, local shopping centers, and of course Eat Street were created.
This source was good because I got a general overview of the history of Northshore/Yerrol. I'd like to try and find more sources on the area.
I specifically would like to look into the area's natural history. The land is a constant throughout this journey, I'd like to research more on plant and animal wildlife. Specifically if there is any research on species that are endemic to the area.

Solar Hunter Valley - Low Cost Housing, Renewable Energy, and Skiing
Whether you're looking to be off the grid or simply want to save money, the Solar Hunter Valley in Australia offers the perfect solution. A combination of a low-cost housing, an abundance of solar and renewable energy, and proximity to some of the world's best skiing, makes this a place you'll definitely want to visit.
Off-the-grid
Off-grid solar systems are a sustainable form of electricity generation that allows homes and businesses to reduce carbon emissions and generate their own electricity. While off-grid systems require more components than conventional solar systems, they are generally more effective. They have the potential to provide more stable power in the summer, and can work even in light and cloudy conditions.
Off-grid solar systems are a more expensive option than regular solar systems, but they are a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. The use of solar batteries allows you to store the excess power generated by your solar panels during the day.
An off-grid solar power system consists of solar panels, an inverter, a battery pack, a charge controller and a management unit. It requires a careful assessment of your power needs, and ongoing management of your power consumption.
Crowne Plaza
The latest tidbit from the Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley is that their new shindig has a
fully functional solar farm. This is a feat that was accomplished by the aforementioned hotel owner. His company has a whopping thirteen thousand power generating panels. With the right mix of sunshine, the hotel will be well on its way to being fully self sufficient.
The Crowne Plaza also owns the crown of being the first luxury hotel in the city to achieve 100% renewable energy. Their co-generation plant consists of a number of technologies, including the aforementioned solar farm and a slew of small scale wind and solar powered systems. It is no wonder then that their energy costs have declined to the point where they are currently offering discounted rates.
Hydrogen Valley
Energy Estate, a renewable energy advisory firm, has proposed a large-scale hydrogen project for the Hunter region of New South Wales. This project, dubbed the Hunter Hydrogen Network (H2N), would cover the production and export chain and would unlock the region's potential as an emerging energy hub.
The H2N project would allow for the production of green hydrogen with renewable energy. It will also serve as a transportation network and export facility. AGL Energy, APA Group, and other partners have been brought on board to support the proposal.
According to the plan, the first phase of the H2N project will be completed in 2024. The second phase would build a hydrogen pipeline from the hub to Newcastle and connect the valley with a clean energy industrial precinct.
Solahart
When you are looking for a solar power installer in Newcastle or the Hunter Valley, you want to find the best in quality and service. One of the leading companies in this field is Solarhart. This company has been helping Australians lower their energy bills for over 65 years. With a wide range of options available, they are able to meet your needs.
Solahart offers a number of solutions for homes and businesses. These include solar hot water systems, heat pumps, and solar-smart electric water heaters. They also offer battery storage. The company's solar PV systems are some of the most efficient on the market, resulting in big energy bill savings.
To save on upfront costs, they are able to combine various financial incentives. This includes the Energy Savings Scheme and the Australian Government Small-Scale Technology Certificates. Each of these offers a financial incentive for switching to an energy-efficient appliance.
Empowered Offgrid
Located in the Hunter Valley north of Sydney, Empowered Offgrid is a selectronic accredited integrator specializing in battery storage solar power hunter valley systems. If you're interested in going green and saving on your energy bills, consider installing a system like this.
Adding a battery storage system to your solar powered home can make a huge difference in your overall energy consumption. You'll have the freedom to turn off your lights and appliances, reduce your carbon emissions, and cut your power bill by as much as 2 percent. And if you're in the market for a new home or are looking to upgrade an existing one, this is a great option.
Empowered Offgrid specialises in off-grid solar systems, but it also offers other services including a battery management system to reduce your energy consumption. For a free quote on a new system or to find out if your current one is eligible for the NSW government's interest-free loan scheme, give them a call today at 1300-795-327.

The Best Neighborhoods in Sydney: Where to Stay on Your Visit
Posted: 06/2/2019 | June 2nd, 2019 Sydney is one of the greatest cities in the world. It has amazing beaches, scenic shorelines, World Heritage sites, and top-notch dining. It’s a large city, and it’s very spread out. So what are the best neighborhoods to stay in? That depends on what you look for in a destination! Each area of Sydney has its own vibe and highlights. Here are my thoughts on the best places to stay in the city. No matter which of these you choose, you can’t go wrong! Table of Contents Best neighborhood for views: The Rocks Best neighborhood for local life: Surry Hills Best neighborhood for a local beach: Coogee Best neighborhood for touristy stuff: Darling Harbour Best neighborhood for beach fun: Bondi Beach Best neighborhood for being central: CBD Best neighborhood for shopping: Paddington Best non-central neighborhood: Manly Best neighborhood for nightlife: Kings Cross Best Neighborhood #1: The Rocks
Just north of Sydney’s Central Business District and on the harbor, this neighborhood offers great views along the waterfront. There are numerous historic buildings in the area, including several pubs. The Rocks Markets is open each weekend, selling all kinds of treasures, including arts and crafts, jewelry and tasty treats. The area has tons of stellar restaurants, museums, and entertainment venues, which helps explain its popularity with tourists. If you stay in The Rocks, make sure you dine along the waterfront! Best Places to Stay in The Rocks BUDGET: Sydney Harbour YHA – This hostel is in a great location, offering views of the harbour and the Opera House. The hostel is built in the old colonial area of the city, but has all the modern comforts of a good hostel. This isn’t really a party hostel, though, but rather a great place for travelers looking for a quiet stay. It’s great for families too! MID-RANGE: Mercantile Hotel – Offering live music, free Wi-Fi, and all the standard ammentities you’d expect from a mid-range hotel. The Mercantile is located right near the Opera House, the Rocks Markets, and the Harbour Bridge. To top it all off, it’s also home to Australia’s longest-running Irish pub! LUXURY: Four Seasons Sydney – Offering incredbible views of the harbour and the city — as well as incredible luxury — this is a great choice for anyone looking to visit Sydney in style. With a state of the art fitness center and wellness center and spa, you’ll be able to get pampered while you enjoy all that Sydney has to offer. Best Neighborhood #2: Surry Hills
Southeast of the Central Business District, Surry Hills has traditionally been known as the best place in Sydney for fashion. The area is perfect for travelers who want to shop ‘til they drop, but its appeal is much broader than that. There are lots of unique, creative dining options, and many old warehouses have been transformed into classy art galleries and gorgeous homes. The area is perfect for young travelers, foodies, and those wanting to experience Oxford Street, the longtime Gay Capital of Sydney. Best Places to Stay in Surry Hills BUDGET: Big Hostel – This hostel offers free breakfast, free Wi-Fi, free luggage storage, and late checkout — everything the budget traveler needs! They also have a full-equipped kitchen and promote eco-friendly practices (they have a service for donating old clothings and promote energy conservation and recycling). MID-RANGE: Manor Boutique Hotel – This charming boutique hotel is located in a heritage building with antique furnishings. It’s conveniently located just 5 minutes from Oxford street where you’ll find plenty of bars and restaurants. Free breakfast is included too! LUXURY: Little Albion – This luxury hotel is actually located in a heritage building that was once a former convent. It’s right near Central Station and only a short drive from Chinatown and Paddy’s Market. The hotel also has a rooftop terrace, lounge, free WiFi, and a complimentary breakfast each morning. Best Neighborhood #3: Coogee
This little area with the funny name is perfect for travelers who want a beach vibe but not all the craziness of Bondi Beach. The area is super scenic and the ocean is calm and safe for swimming. This neighborhood is an eastern suburb of Sydney, but you can get to town on public transit in less than half an hour. Coogee has a youthful and family-friendly feel. Sydney’s eastern East suburbs, youthful, family friendly. If your trip calls for a lot of beach time, this is a great option. There’s super snorkeling nearby at Gordons Bay, and be sure to check out the Wylie Baths — amazing rock pools perfect for swimming. The seaside town is known for its fish and chips, so be sure to give them a try too! Best Places to Stay in Coogee BUDGET: Mad Monkey Coogee Beach – This is a great budget hostel located right on the beach. They have a cool co-working space and there are plenty of bars and restaurants around as well. It’s not fancy by any means, but it gets the job done! Just keep in mind that it can get a little noisy, so don’t stay here if you’re looking for some peace and quiet! MID-RANGE: Coogee Bay Hotel (Boutique) – This lovely boutique hotel is in a great location, located only 20 minutes from downtown and 20 minutes from the airport. It’s right beside the ocean, as well, and there is a restaurant and beer garden on-site. LUXURY: Crowne Plaza Coogee Beach – This incredible hotel boasts panoramic views of the ocean, a heated swimming pool, 2 bars, tennis courts, and a fully-equipped fitness center. It’s a spacious hotel with ultra-modern rooms, and there are lots of great seafood restaurants nearby as well. Best Neighborhood #4: Darling Harbour
This area of town is best for families. This lively neighborhood is a huge tourist draw, as there are tons of attractions along the waterfront. The Sydney Aquarium and IMAX are here, and there’s all kinds of dining. The area’s clubs come alive at night and there’s lots of shopping. There’s also a Madame Tussauds, if that tells you anything. If you’re travelling with kids, consider this neighborhood. If not, I probably wouldn’t stay in this Disney-like environment. Best Places to Stay in Darling Harbour BUDGET: Siesta Sydney – This budget-friendly hostel is clean, located in a great location, and has really friendly staff. They have free towels, free Wi-Fi, a fully-equipped kitchen, and laundry facilities. MID-RANGE: Glasgow Arms Hotel – This charming hotel is located above a beautiful old pub. Free breakfast is served all day long and the hotel is just a 5-minute walk from Darling Harbour. LUXURY: The Darling at The Star– This is a massive, luxuorious hotel home to a spa, casino, and over 20 bars and restaurants. Pamper yourself in their Turkish bath or enjoy a swim in their scented outdoor swimming pool — that also has its own bar! Best Neighborhood #5: Bondi Beach
Bondi Beach is world famous. Once you see the iconic beach, you’ll understand why: The amazing views of the Pacific, the seafood restaurants along Campbell Parade, the happening nightlife! This is a great place for backpackers and those looking to party. But it’s also a good base for beach couples, as well. Bondi is not right in the heart of the city, but public transit is a piece of cake. This area appeals to a younger crowd, and you’re sure to see surfers in the water, sun worshippers on the sand, and adventurous sorts hiking the scenic coastal trails. Best Places to Stay in Bondi Beach BUDGET: Bondi Backpackers – If you love the beach, you can’t beat this place! There’s a great rooftop space overlooking Bondi Beach and the hostel offers free surfboards. There are also free yoga classes, walking tours, and other fitness activities. If you’re there Friday night, don’t miss the BBQ party on the rooftop! MID-RANGE: Ultimate Apartments (Bondi Beach) – Located just a 7-minute walk from the beach, Ultimate Apartments offers studio apartments with free parking. They have kitchenettes so you can cook some of your own food, as well as an outdoor pool onsite. The rooms are spacious and the beds are comfy! LUXURY: Hotel Bondi – With views overlooking the beach, this boutique-style hotel has both private and shared balconies, as well as some deluze rooms with kitchen facilities if you want to cook your own meals. There is a restaurant onsite, the showers are great, and the staff is incredibly helpful. Best Neighborhood #6: Central Business District
Sydney’s CBD is the heart of it all. It’s a huge area filled with skyscrapers, business, banking, and commerce. But it’s not only for the suit and tie set. This area has tons of attractions, including the Opera House and Royal Botanic Garden. The neighborhood is generally pretty pricey, but the location may be worth it. The city’s best dining is here, as are the poshest hotels and chicest art galleries. You won’t find a lot of quirky shops, flea markets, or vintage treasures, but you will feel the excitement of big-city living! Best Places to Stay in the Central Business District BUDGET: Base Sydney – There aren’t many budget options in this part of the city when it comes to accommodation, so Base will likely be your best choice. They have free Wi-Fi and an on-site bar, making it a great place to have fun and meet people. MID-RANGE: Park Regis City Centre – With a rooftop pool and views overlooking the city, this is a great mid-range hotel offering value above and beyond the pricetag. The location is perfect and allows you easy access to all of the main attractions in the city, and they also offer a free airport shuttle as well. LUXURY: Sheraton Grand Sydney Hyde Park – This hotel overlooks Hyde Park and boasts an indoor swimming pool, rooftop fitness center, a free airport shuttle, and amazing restaurants and room service. It’s the perfect place to pamper yourself in the heart of the city. Best Neighborhood #7: Paddington
If you’re looking for a quiet place to stay in Sydney, Paddington is one of my favorite neighborhoods. It’s between the CBD and the beaches, so you can get anywhere pretty quickly via bus. This eastern suburb is mainly residential, with beautiful tree-lined streets and Victorian homes with cute balconies. There are upscale restaurants, lively pubs, and prestigious art galleries as well as funky shops. The area is known for the Saturday Paddington Markets at the Uniting Church. Centennial Park is a great place to relax in the outdoors. This isn’t the best neighborhood if you are looking for extensive nightlife and party options, though. Best Places to Stay in Paddington BUDGET: Arts Hotel – Budget options in this area are few and far between, so Airbnb might be your best choice. If you’d prefer a hotel, try Arts Hotel. It’s located right on Oxford Street and have a cool garden, swimming pool, and free bikes to use. MID-RANGE: Airbnb – There aren’t any great mid-range options in this area so I’d try Airbnb for a middle-of-the-road option. Just be sure to book in advance as the best places disappear fast! LUXURY: Mrs Banks Hotel – This hotel is actually located in a former bank. It has a very chic vibe and the rooms are all well designed. There’s free Wi-Fi and breakfast included as well. Best Neighborhood #8: Manly
Manly is a suburb of Sydeny located just north of the city. It’s is famous for its amazing beach, giant waves, surfing, and wild nightlife. The area has a completely different vibe to it than the central city; it’s a part of town that knows how to have a good time. A lot of tourists actually miss that part of the city as it is a bit out of the way. But don’t let that stop you — it’s worth the short ride to get here. In fact, it’s one of my favorite areas of the city! You’ll also find some gorgeous coastal walking trails on this side of the harbor too. Best Places to Stay in Manly BUDGET: Manly Backpackers – This is your classic backpacker hostel, with a great social vibe and lively nightlife. The staff are super helpful and fun and can help you make the most out of your trip. Don’t expect the most neat and tidy hostel as there are many long-term backpackers here and the place can get a little messy. But what it lacks in cleanliness it backs up for in price and atmosphere! MID-RANGE: Novotel Sydney Manly Pacific – Located right across from Manly Beach, this hotel is in the perfect location for those looking to balance soaking up the rays on the beach with Manly’s wild nightlife. The hotel has a fitness center and rooftop pool, as well as a nice bar and free breakfast (including certain rooms). You’ll get some great views here too! LUXURY: Designer Studios Manly – As soon as you arrive, you’ll notice the little touches that make this hotel stand out. Not only is there free Wi-Fi, free parking, and a free airport shuttle but you’ll also be gifted free wine and sparkling water on arrival. The staff can also provide picnic blankets in case you want to go out and relax in one of the citys many parks or beaches (which I suggest you do!). Best Neighborhood #9: Kings Cross
Located North of Paddington and east of the downtown core, Kings Cross is another party district for any nightowls looking to have fun. It’s wild and cheap, and you’ll find a good mix of both backpackers and locals here. The famous World Bar is where most of the action happens (it’s home to cheap drinks and a large dance floor). If you’re not a backpacker or not looking to party, this probably won’t be the place you wan’t to stay during your visit. Best Places to Stay in Kings Cross BUDGET: Hump Backpackers – This is a social hostel where the staff host plenty of fun daily activities to help you meet people (like BBQs, beer pong, and pancake breakfasts). There’s a free breakfast included, all-day coffee and tea, and a different activities each and every night. The beds here are quite comfortable, the bathrooms and showers are kept clean, and lockers in each room are huge. The hostel is surrounded by lots of restaurants and shops, as well as a few bars, so there’s a bunch of things to do in the area. Note: you have to be 18-35 years old to stay here. MIDRANGE: Quest Potts Point – Boasting a rooftop terrace with views over the city, and located only a 5 minute walk from the rambunctious nightlife of Kings Cross, Quest Potts Point is the perfect choice for travelers wanting privacy and comfort while still looking to be right next to the action. Most of the rooms have kitchenettes, the beds are quite comfy, and the staff can help you organize all sorts of fun tours and day trips! LUXURY: Larmont Sydney – The Larmont Sydney by Lancemore is located just 2 minutes from Kings Cross station. The hotel offers all the luxury you need for a very reasonable price. With all the standards like free Wi-Fi, incredibly comfy beds, and amazing staff (the staff here really go above and beyond), this hotel is a great choice for anyone looking for a luxurious stay in a lively area of the city. *** While Sydney is a big place, it’s not overwhelming. You should be able to hit all the highlights in one trip. Of course, this is by no means an exhaustive list of places to stay – these are just my favorites! I really like quite a few of these areas, so maybe you’ll want to experience several neighborhoods — stay in town several nights, then move to Bondi Beach or Coogee to get a feel for the surf. To me, that’s the best of both worlds. But no matter where you stay, I’m confident you’ll enjoy the city and have an amazing time in Australia! Book Your Trip to Australia: Logistical Tips and Tricks Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner or Momondo. They are my two favorite search engines because they search websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is left unturned. Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld. If you want to stay elsewhere, use Booking.com as they consistently return the cheapest rates for guesthouses and cheap hotels. I use them all the time. My favorite hostels in Sydney are: Hump Backpackers – This is a social hostel with free breakfast, all-day coffee and tea, and different activities every night. The beds are comfy and soft, showers are kept clean, and the room lockers are huge. Lord Wolseley – This hostel is located on the upper floors of a historic bar and restaurant that has been around since 1881. Its location near Chinatown and Central Station makes it one of the cheaper places to stay in town. Darling Harbour is just a five minute walk. Asylum Backpackers Hostel – Asylum is close to Kings Cross station, and it’s just a 30-minute walk to the Opera House and the Botanic Gardens. The dorms are spacious and there are common areas inside and outside and free breakfast each day. Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. I’ve been using World Nomads for ten years. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are: World Nomads (for everyone below 70) Insure My Trip (for those over 70) Looking for the best companies to save money with? Check out my resource page for the best companies to use when you travel! I list all the ones I use to save money when I travel – and I think will help you too! Want More Information on Australia? DKs Van Life Take 1: The test
Last year, two weeks before Drew, my partner, and I were ready to set off on our first official overseas trip together, I was admitted to hospital for a week and then told I couldn’t fly.
That feeling of being trapped set in about a month later, when my condition was being managed and I realised I had been told I couldn’t do the one thing I live for – exploring the world.
So what does one do when they are grounded from flying? Camper Van it!! Drew was in love with the idea instantly and we started planning. Wondering whether buy a van straight up or should we hire first? We decided to do a test trip before we buy and here we are.
The Test. 10 Days going South of Sydney heading to the Great Ocean Road and back through the Barossa Valley. 3,548kms will be travelled in total.
Our hot tips for a van life. Season vanlifers, I’m sure already know these, though for any newbies out there we highly recommend making note:
1. Baby wipe baths. When you have no idea where you’ll be setting up camp or where the next shower is, baby wipe baths is one way to stay fresh.
2. Head torches. Even when you have light in the van, it’s never quite enough. When you’re parked in a remote area or if you want to go for some night exploring. These babies are your best friends.
3. Bucket Toilet. Now when this was first suggested to me I was like, umm really!! But ladies I assure you, in the middle of the night when you’ve parked your van in the most beautiful spot you can find, but there are no facilities, the bucket toilet is your saviour. Whether you make your own or do what we did and invest in one from your local camping store. I promise you’ll be most grateful you did.
Day 1: Heading to our first stay. We chose Tumut, a cute little place with a free camp site, nestled between the mountains and a trout filled river. It was a little in-land as day two takes us to the Milawa Cheese Company before heading down to the Mornington Peninsular.
Here we are, head touches on, setting up the van for the first time. It’s about 8pm, the roof is popped and I start transferring our things up in the top storage section in preparation to make up the bed. Drew starts prepping to cook up a storm on our little Webber......Then it hit me..….we forgot the doona/quilt/duvet!! Basically we had sheets and a blanket to keep us warm on our first night….Snuggle time!!
For anyone vanning down the east coast of OZ looking for a free camp site. No facilities, however plenty of wood to make a little camp fire, simply put ‘The Tumut Wetlands’ into your GPS. It’ll take you approx. 4hrs 25 mins South of Sydney.
Day 2: After a chilli night, we wake up to a crisp morning and the sounds of the running river. We pack up and head into town for a coffee and to buy a doona. Next stop The Milawa Cheese Company, approx. 3hrs away. We highly recommend stopping in and tasting their cheese. They do sampling between 9am and 4pm and I promise, you won’t be disappointed. Our Favourite, the King River Gold.
From there we start our hardcore drive to Barwon Heads to meet up for a few drinks with. Just over 6hrs drive away.
We had planned to get an unpowered site at the caravan park situated right on the water, but we arrived to late, they were already closed. Good news though, there is a long car park that runs behind it, better view and another score for a free place to set up. As an added bonus it’s a 2 minute stroll to the local pub.
If you’re heading down that way the street name is Ewing Blyth Drive, Barwon Heads.
Day 3: Bells Beach Australia!! Even if you’re not a surfer, everyone has seen the movie and knows about the Classic Bells Beach and the 50 year storm – even though the movie wasn’t filmed at the real Bells Beach, it’s still a destination to visit. Just a short 8 minute drive out of Torquay’s town center.
This beautiful beach hosts the Rip Curl Pro surf comp every Easter bringing professional surfers from all over the world. Unfortunately, it’s not a Van friendly town, so you need to be strategic when selecting where you set up for the night. There are many breath-taking places, you’ll be right.
Day 4: We consider this our real first day on our little trip, as neither of us have been past this point. We decided to have no real plan, to just take each moment as it comes. For me who is a massive planner, this was the first time ever I was just going with it. And I am loving every minute.
Drew is a massive coffee drinker, can’t start his day without one and recommends popping into the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery before heading on to your next destination.
Heading down the Great Ocean Road we were both craving a hot shower. Baby wipe baths are great and all, however as we all know, nothing beats a nice hot shower. If you’re driving through Lorne Victoria. Lorne Sea Baths. $10.50 entry, if you have some extra time you can have fun in their pool, relax in the spa and steam room. Although if you’re like us and just in need of a hot shower, this is the place to stop.
Although Lorne provided a great spot to stop for a shower, we decided to move on to Apollo Bay.
The road to Apollo Bay is striking. Winding up and down on the side of the high cliffs, before making your way down to the humble little town on the other side.
Another town that isn’t camper van friendly, however we were lucky to get a hot tip from a local that told us about a little spot, right next to the beach, where we could set up for the night. And we’re going to share the secret... As you’re driving into the town, with Lorne behind you, take the first left into a little tree covered car park, just before the Big4 Caravan park up on the right.
We love Apollo Bay, it reminds us of the North Shore in Hawaii with stunning mountains on one side and the ocean on the other, the perfect balance of earth and water living side by side.
Day 5: There are many sites to see around Apollo Bay. If you’re into Hiking and seeing the ancient trees and waterfalls, make sure you give yourself time to explore. We took a little 30 minute forest walk through Maits Rest, getting a shameless tourist picture in the famous tree belly, before heading off down the Great Ocean Road to see the remaining 12 Apostles.
It’s wondrous how some eroded rocks being shaped by the battering sea, can attract so many people to see them. As we turn into the first look out, at Castle Cove, we are marvelled, just as the others before us. Mesmerised, watching the sea crash into the bottom of the rocks we start to understand why these awe-inspiring natural structures draw such big crowds every day.
Stopping at every look out to take photos we finished the day at the little community town Port Campbell. We are delighted to hear they had a bush style camping ground for both powered and unpowered sites. Full outside kitchen and hot showers. Unpowered sites are only $10pp. Powered sites $20pp with all proceeds going towards the community. You can also hire fire barrels for $20 deposit and $25 for a bag of wood. Just punch in Port Campbell Recreation Reserve into your GPS. It’s close to town so if you want to eat out, it’s just a 5 minute, easy walk in. After you’ve showered and picked your camp spot for the night.
Don’t forget your head torches. Although the sky is filled with stars, it’s a dark walk back.
Day 6: As we make our way to the Coonawarra down the remaining Great Ocean Road, we are breath-taken by the structures on the other side of the 12 Apostles. It’s strange no one talks as much about this side of the Great Ocean Road, we think this spectacular coastline, with more sea battered structures are equally, if not better than the reaming 12 Apostles. We highly recommend stopping at every look out to take a peak and many photos. All except the Grotto, you won’t miss anything if you skip that one.
Another place you can skip is ‘Cheese World’. Don’t get excited. It is the smallest world of cheese we’ve ever come across, and really not worth the stop, unless you’re busting for the bathroom.
We pull into the Coonawarra, the town is actually called Penola, punch this into your GPS, not the Coonawarra wine region. We arrived a few minutes before the information center closed and was please to be told there is another bush style camping ground just up the road. This one was nestled amongst the vineyards. It has tepee style tents and one of those igloo ones. $10pp for unpowered sites. $25pp for powered/glamping sites.
Day 7: To the Barossa, after doing a little wine tasting along the Coonawarra strip. More Drew tasting, but a tiny sip was had by myself and with great delight I discovered my new favorite winery. Penley Estate. They have the most exquisite glasses, which are available for purchase. We bought four. Best impulse stop ever.
We decided to stay at the Murray Bridge, before the Barossa. We had set off later than expected and we were in no rush.
Day 8: The Barossa is about 3 hours from the Coonawarra and there’s not too much along the way. So crank that stereo and sing your way through it.
The town was full of people. There was some festival on, it was crazy. We find a side street to park in and walk through the streets towards the sounds of an auction. They were auctioning weird stuff, like a sacks of potatoes at the bargain price of $50. Anyway!! We made our way to find were we had booked a delightful degustation dinner at Appellation. I was so excited, this would be our first degustation. Drew’s more into the hardy meaty meals so the moment he suggested finding a great place for dinner, I was onto it.
Little did I know, he had a plan. I can’t believe I had no idea.
We found where we were going to set up for the night, close the restaurant. We discovered one of my favorite mid week wines ‘The running with the Bulls’, was made by Yalumba so we headed out to their vineyard to see if we could snap a good cellar door price. Unfortunately, no, the price was pretty much the same as I can get at home. Lets go to lunch and find a hot shower. We found a hot shower and got ready for our amazing dinner.
The Restaurant had a bar which overlooked the thousands of grape vines scattered amongst the small hills below. As we sipped out first drink, Drew noticed they had a life size chess set. He loves a competition and we had some time to kill before our reservation. As the sun started to set Drew says he needs his sunnies and went out to the car. I stood there sipping beautiful wine out of a gorgeous Ridel stemless glass, freezing my ass off. Drew comes make, makes a move and then goes in to get more drinks. By this time I was wondering why he wasn’t concentrating on the game and trying to win.
He urged me to abandon the game and come for a walk in the vines to watch the sun set. And the next thing I know Drew pulls a ring box from his pocket and is down on one knee. I said yes.
Wearing my sparkly new ring I couldn’t stop staring at it as we were seated for dinner. The waitress picked up on it and congratulated us with a glass of Champagne. We choose the 4 course degustation menu and were delighted to know that you don’t have to have all four sections. This was perfect for us as we don’t eat dessert. So we worked out how we could try most of the menu in the four courses. The flavour combinations and presentation was spectacular and the absolute perfect place to celebrate our engagement.
Day 9: The trek back home begins. There’s not a lot to see today. There’s a whole lot of nothing over the dry plains except for sheep, the odd emu and kangaroo. After 7 hrs of solid driving, we decided to stay at another bush style camp ground at Hay. $10pp, nice hot showers and our last dinner in the van.
Day 10: It’s time to hand Johnno back. Up bright and early to detail him then back to Sydney we go. We had stopped into Robertson to have dinner with Drew’s mom and celebrate our engagement with his sister and cute little niece and nephew. What an amazing journey. The test score was in…..we will be buying a van.
Thanks for coming on the ride with us on our first van life adventure. Follow our other travel adventures @kizakuza on Instagram.
