‘No. It won’t do to be dirty stopouts the night before the audition, will it?’ Jil laughed as she snugged close to Hannibal. ‘We can have an early night.’ Work out some of their nerves on each other.

Daniel woke slightly as he was cuddled tighter. He got Armand rearranged in his arms and went back to sleep.

Louis de Pointe Dulac had made the corps de ballet. He stepped into the classroom and quietly sat in the back setting his bag down as he got ready to stretch. He stared around at the other dancers, he saw the other beginner dancers like him as well as the Principal dancers, the best of the company. The teacher walked in and started instructing the warm up exercises.

Stede POV - 3.4

Between them, they managed to polish off a decent enough amount of the banquet Stede had prepared (with Ed doing most of the heavy lifting), and Stede boxed up the leftovers to pop in the fridge and finish later.

They had passed the time over breakfast bantering back and forth and making easy conversation, with Stede continuing to add new facts to the little box in his head that stored information about Ed.

His favourite colour was purple but he told everyone it was black.

When he was little, his dream job was to be a pirate.

He still had the sharpie he wrote his first lyrics with even though it was dried up and unusable.

He was an only child.

Stede could have learned and listed facts about Ed all day, and he said as much when they were clearing up the breakfast things together. “So what’s on the agenda for today?”

“Gotta head off actually. Got a meeting over at the venue to discuss the show next weekend.”

During this peaceful and silly morning, he had quite forgotten that Ed was a famous rockstar with places to be and people to see, and he couldn’t spend all day hanging out at Stede’s house. Stede didn’t know why he’d assumed otherwise.

Ed seemed disappointed which Stede tried not to read much into. “When’s the meeting?”

“I just said afternoon, but I’d rather head over sooner and get it all done and out of the way. Plus I need to go home and change into some fresh clothes, lest people think I’m a dirty stopout.”

Stede didn’t know what that meant but he didn’t ask. “You’re welcome to borrow some of my clothes if you’d rather head straight there to get your meeting over and done with.” 

And then you could come back here straight after.

“Your clothes?” Ed’s smile was bemused. “Got anything black? Any leather?”

“Ah, not really. Doesn’t suit me.”

“Disagree, I think you should try it.”

“Do you always wear black because I think you’d look very fine in something more colourful.” Stede figured his honesty could be misconstrued as flirting but he wasn’t against it.

“The black kinda goes with the territory, it would look a little odd if I suddenly showed up in neon pink.”

Personally, Stede thought that would be a very fine look indeed. “I was thinking more of jewel tones. I would put you in deep amethysts, emeralds, garnets, sapphires.”

Why didn’t he just say purples, greens, reds and blues?

Because Ed was made for finer things, and Stede decided only literal jewels were good enough descriptions.

“You wouldput me in those, eh?” Ed’s emphasis was on put and suddenly Stede was imagining standing in front of Ed, slowly removing each item of clothing to replace it with a new one. Both undressing and dressing the man in front of him. Did he have more tattoos that he hadn’t seen, or any more piercings? Stede ached to find out.

Ed’s phone chirped and Stede tried not to look dejected. “Buttons is outside, I’d better be going.”

Stede escorted him to the door, like a gentleman, but then was hit by the panic of not knowing how to say goodbye. No contact? A handshake? Hug?  

Ed solved the riddle by extending his fist again. Stede shook it like a handshake and Ed laughed. They already had a little inside joke, a secret handshake like kids made up in school. “Guess I’ll see you on Saturday night.”

“Yes you will.” He was confident. By hell or high water, Stede would be at that concert.

“No all white outfit this time, I don’t need any distractions while I’m onstage.”

Stede bounced the teasing straight back. “No singing lewd lyrics directly to a fan, we don’t need another fainting case.”

“I promise the filthy lyrics will only be sung to you.”

Just when he thought he was getting the hang of playful banter, Ed would say something that made his legs buckle. He fought the urge to drop to his knees. “Right, well. Best of luck with your meeting and I will see you on Saturday.”

“Keep in touch.”

And then the bastard winked at him before sauntering down to the waiting car.
