Sidharth Shukla, 33, is simple, honest, helpful and vain. Extremely popular as the Shiv of Balika Vadhu, he has bagged a three-film contract with Karan Johar and is awaiting the release of his first film 'Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania'. Over an hour-long conversation with Bombay Times, he talks about his godfather Karan Johar, his friend Amit Shirodkar, who changed his life, and why he would do anything in the world for his mother. Excerpts:

How did you get into television? We are Brahmins originally from Allahabad, but I was born and brought up in Mumbai. My father was a civil engineer employed with the Reserve Bank of India. I thought I was a big waste and would not be able to do anything in life and had no clue what I would do, till I met Amit Shirodkar while giving my tenth board exams. He was sitting next to me and I found him liberally copying from me.

All through the exams he copied and passed and we parted ways. Later, one day, I was passing him on the street and stopped to remind him that I was the guy he had copied from and how he owed his passing to me. We became best friends and for the next three years, my life just revolved around his. His father was an interior designer and he told me, ‘Sidharth, you don’t feel scared, my father has his interiors business and I am starting interiors, so you just be with me.’ I was thrilled. Amit was just 19, when he died all of sudden in a bike accident and I was devastated. The accident happened on a Saturday and he went into coma. On Sunday evening, his mother came to my building running, surprised that I had not come to see Amit in hospital, despite supposedly being with him on the evening when he met with an accident. Amit was a full- on party person, whereas I was considered a seedha boy by his mother who had permitted him to go that night as he said that he was going with me. I rushed to the hospital, but lost Amit the next day.

You might find it uncanny, but recently I was with Aunty (Amit’s mother) on Mother’s Day and she said to me, ‘Sidharth, I never left the side of Amit in hospital so I did not come to your building.’ I still can’t figure out then how I came to know that day about Amit’s accident. Either she has forgotten or I can’t understand it. Amit anyways got me into interiors and he would tell me, ‘I will do everything. You just sit around.’ I, of course, knew that it would be the other way round, where I would be working and he would be chilling. But I miss him a lot. There is a lot in life that I learnt from him. For instance, he would do these small things, like feeding beggars at Haji Ali with the extra money he had. That is something that does not come to a 19- year-old boy on his own without his parents asking him to do so. I learnt how to help other people from him. He was also the one who first took me to a club. It was an afternoon and those days, the clubs would be dark with neon lights. Since it was my first time, I missed seeing the low seating and fell down. After Amit’s passing away, I did the interiors course and worked with his father for a couple of years. He was very nice to me and his family till date is my second family. Right from the time I can remember I have been vain, looking at myself in the mirror thinking I was the best thing that had happened. My sisters would always be watching models on TV and I would always want them to someday watch me. I was skinny, so started working out to build my body to become strong. My mom told me, ‘Tu itni herogiri karta hai building mein, why don’t you participate in this Cuffe Parade fashion contest?’ I didn’t want to as I didn’t want to lose, but still agreed. I did lose the contest, but, surprisingly, got selected for the Pantaloons ad campaign, which was the gratification for winning the contest. I then started modelling and became the first runner-up in a national manhunt contest. I had not taken my mother along as I didn’t want her to be disappointed if I lost. I was disheartened that I had not come first, as I desperately wanted to win it. But then I became the first Asian to win the Best Model in the World contest and till date, no one has ever won it. I travelled out of the country for the first time and was a part of many ad commercials, till I got my first break on television.

What led to your transformation from being a wasted person to being so focused?

I lost my father in 2005 just after winning the national manhunt contest. I was just 25 then. Not that I felt any major pressure personally before that, but I suddenly became the man of the house. I had two elder sisters who were married, but did not want to burden my mother. I love her the most in the world. After my father I have become closer to her, as she has had to go through a lot of hard times. He died due to a lung disorder due to smoking and had been ill for the last seven years of his life. But he worked till his last day and I think he was working only because of me, as I was the only unsettled person in the family. I was doing nothing in my life. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do as there was nothing concrete I was doing till then. My dad never had a lot of money, but the best part is that he never made me feel that. In his entire life, I don’t think he would have worn clothes including his shoes, for more than `2,000, but if I wanted to wear a jeans for `2,000, he would somehow ensure that I got it without me knowing. I know all that he has done for me. I realise today that I was just living in my own world at that time and was quite oblivious to what he was going through. Being the youngest, I was always protected, so money problems never came to me. It hurts me a lot now, but, at that time, I didn’t realise. There was a time when he also had cancer which got cured. But he would get chemo done and come back home by a bus, whereas I would move around in a taxi. We didn’t have a car at that time and got one only later when my sisters started working. My father saw my first commercial, but he died after that. I strongly believe that it was his blessings that made me win the Best Model of the World contest. I cry a lot remembering him. I remember when my first print ad appeared, he would keep all the cuttings of the newspaper in his pocket. He used to love watching TV and I know he would have been thrilled to see me as Shiv in Balika Vadhu. After my father, I have done everything I could do for my mother. From being a complete waste, I transformed to being hard-working. My mother is very religious and she wanted to visit all the four dhaams and Mansarovar. I ensured she went everywhere and also went along with her to three of the four dhaams. Of course, she would want me to express my appreciation for her more than I do, but I will do anything to make her happy. From my first earnings, I took her out to dinner. And like all mothers she looked at the rates on the menu and ordered the cheapest item. All my life I had looked at the menu and ordered the most expensive item while growing up. I want the best for her and love her the most in the world.

 How did you get a role in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania?

I was on the last season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, where Karan was the judge. He liked me and called me. Karan Johar calling you was a big thing and the first time he called me, I couldn’t believe it. He is very grounded and is so real. From the outside when you see him, you feel that he is this huge mountain, but actually he is such a plateau and is so easy to talk to. He has no hangups and he doesn’t feel superior in any way. I can have a conversation with him without offending him and can speak anything to him. Karan Johar is like Narendra Modi in my life because I feel ab achche din aane waale hain.

Sidhrath Shukla was asked if he began distancing himself from Shehnaaz Gill after host Salman Khan warned him that was in love, and he responded that not much has changed between the two. Asked if her attachment with Sidharth was for the game, Shehnaaz insisted her bond was real, adding that Sidharth has invested time on her which is the reason she started following him.When Asim Riaz was asked about having dated anyone or being in a relationship, he denied it. After the conference ended, the media was asked to vote for their favourite contestants and get that person into the elite club. While Shehnaaz was given twelve votes, Paras Chhabra received nine, Mahira Sharma received one, and Arti Singh none, and Rashami received fifteen votes, making her the third member of the Bigg Boss 13 Elite Club, after Sidharth and Asim.Soon, Shehnaaz was seen crying and an angry Sidharth told her she should avoid getting used if he has been using her. Sidharth and Shehnaaz fought over their answers during the QnA. Shehnaaz asked him how could he say something like ‘Ab Asim ke paas jaegi (Now she will go to Asim)’.

Arti also told Rashami that she looked happier as a single woman, hinting at her recent announcement that she was done with Arhaan. Paras then talked about Akanksha with Rashami. Rashami said he sounded thankless when he talked about the girl. Mahira was not happy that the discussion was happening. She asked Paras not to speak, neither against nor for the woman (Akanksha) and said he should sort it out with her instead of taking advices from people.  Bigg Boss 13 is nearing it’s end and the upcoming episode of the show will see some ruthless grilling of the contestants by senior journalist Rajat Sharma.

Now Rajat Sharma in his Adaalat questioned Rashami Desai. First he talks about Arhaan Khan and questions about her current status.

When quizzed about her silence post Arhaan’s revelation, Rashami said, “I got to know a lot of things that he hid from me. I never knew of his marriage nor kid. I was so confused that I preferred to remain silent.”

Rajat Sharma rebuked Rashami for her proposal even after knowing the truth, to which Rashami said, “When you love someone, it is very difficult to get detached in quick time.”

When asked about the clarification that Sidharth wanted to give before entering into the house, Rashami said that it is a personal issue.

Apart from Rashami, Rajat also grill other housemates with his tough questions.

He also grilled Asim Riaz on seeking sympathy on the show along with his broken friendship with Sidharth Shukla. Asim says that he considered Sidharth as a great friend and an elder brother but the latter never used to listen to him. He also tells Rajat that it is very important that one friend listens to the other for retaining the friendship. However, the allegations did not stop there. Asim was also accused of seeking sympathy constantly on the show.

From fun games inside the house to teaching exciting dance moves, host Salman Khan and Bigg Boss 13 makers ensured the housemates had a lot of fun on Sunday’s episode as it would eventually end in an eviction. Here are the top highlights of tonight’s episode: Salman Khan played a game with the housemates where he posed questions about Shehnaaz Gill and Shehnaaz and the housemates were supposed to answer separately. Interestingly, crying infront of Rashami Desai was one common choice for all questions. Also read: Alia Bhatt sends Kangana Ranaut flowers after Padma Shri honour, Rangoli Chandel says ‘I am enjoying it’Soon, Varun Dhawan and Shraddha Kapoor entered the house to promote their film Street Dancer 3D. Varun called Sidharth Shukla a very gentle person, adding that Sidharth used to be protective of him and Alia Bhatt while shooting at crowded locations for Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya. “Sidharth is the most gentle, protective and chivalrous person in I have worked with,” Varun said after revealing that he has worked with and is friends with both Asim Riaz and Sidharth. Varun also told the housemates that watching fights is interesting but it’s getting extreme now, and they should keep things in check. He also asked them to try some comedy. Varun and Shraddha gave a task to the contestants wherein they had to play musical chairs blindfolded while Varun and Shraddha kept moving around the chairs. Later Remo D’Souza entered the house with a big surprise – a chance to get immunity by reviving the Elite club task. Clocks with pictures of the contestants, except Asim, were placed on a wall and two contestants were asked to break the clock of the contestant they did not feel deserved to be in the Elite Club.

In the task, Rashami and Vishal said Shefali Jariwala should be out of the race while Paras Chhabra and Mahira Sharma agreed on Shehnaaz’s name. Arti Singh and Shefali agreed on Rashami’s name . Rashami was hurt and asked Arti if she really thought so. Arti replied that she had to save herself first so she needed to break Rashami’s candidacy for the task. Sidharth and Shehnaaz decided on Vishal’s name. Shehnaaz declared she wanted to name Paras but also wanted to ensure Sidharth is in the race for elite club.After Varun requested her, Shehnaaz sang Bol Do Na Zara and Sidharth simply kept his eyes down and listened. However, after the Shehnaaz stopped singing, Varun revealed Sidharth broke his chair. Later Arti clarified to Rashami that she wanted to name Vishal as she had no emotional attachment with him but had to agree for Rashami’s name because she wanted to save herself.

Later, Varun and Shraddha, alongwith the Street Dancer 3D team, went on the stage where Salaman even danced with them on the hit number Illegal Weapon 2.0. Varun told Salman that Asim and Sidharth are gentle people and they are not usually the way they are seen on the show. Even as Bigg Boss prepared the housemates to turn into comedians, they continued their fights. Here are the top highlights from tonight’s episode: The episode began with Shehnaaz Gill attacking Sidharth Shukla with slippers as they fooled around in the house.Mahira Sharma was upset and Sidharth asked her the reason but she said in an angry tone that he must not talk about her in things related to Shehnaaz. Paras Chhabra behaved as if he knew nothing and Mahira began yelling at him as well. Mahira pushed Paras after hugging him and he got upset. She yelled again and told Paras that he can throw abusive words at her and walk away, she will follow him later asking for his forgiveness. When Shehnaaz asked Sidharth what his problem was, he said, “I like you, that’s the problem.”Later, Mahira told Paras she was upset with him as he went to Sidharth even when Mahira told Sidharth that he won’t. Paras was angry at her and told her that he was done with handling such tantrums, she kept crying. She stopped crying only after Arti asked Paras to talk to her and he went and picked her up, bringing her back to bed. Next morning, Rashami Desai, Madhurima Tulli and Asim Riaz discussed that Shehnaaz was completely in love with Sidharth. “Inki generation ka samajh nahi ata hai, pyar kabhi bhi palti marta hai. Team Rashami had Sidharth, Asim, Mahira and Shehnaz. Vishal Aditya Singh, Madhurima, Aarti Singh, and Shefali Jariwala formed Team Paras. Both teams had to prepare two dishes using Quaker oats. The teams were also given two challenges - arm wrestling between Mahira and Madhurima; and skipping competition between Asim and Vishal. The winning team would get the chance to choose the dish they wish to cook. For the arm wrestling, Madhurima managed to defeat Mahira in a single attempt while Vishal won the skipping challenge. To judge the housemates’ cooking skills, celebrity chef Vikas Khanna entered the house and shared his expertise with both the teams while they prepped and also announced that the winners will be treated to a delicious meal cooked by him. When they prepared the food, Vikas kept making fun of their skills and told them they were lucky that they did not work in his restaurant. After eating, he declared Rashami’s team as the winner saying he was surprised as her team was not disciplined at all. Everyone then enjoyed an exotic meal prepared by Vikas. He asked housemates to fight less as he bid goodbye to them. Later in the day, Bigg Boss announced the housemates had to try their hans at comedy and put up a comedy show. Titled ‘Comedy Club’ Task, the contestants had to prepare a stand-up comedy act basing it on one of their fellow housemates. The first batch of contestants to take up the challenge were Sidharth, Madhurima, Rashami, Aarti, and Vishal. Haarsh Limbachiyaa came in the house as their mentor. After Haarsh left, Shehnaaz began yelling that no one was working ever since Bigg Boss announced that Paras, Asim and Mahira were to complete all household chores, as punishment. Sidharth brought a freshly washed cup to her and she shouted at him asking if he had begun washing utensils. Sidharth told her that he simply did not want a fight between her and Mahira so just brought the cup to her. Paras and Rashami also yelled at Shehnaaz. Shehnaaz and Paras engaged in an ugly fight and she even abused him with cuss words and Sidharth had to intervene. She began washing all the utensils but Madhurima, Shefali walked up to her and stopped her but she yelled at all of them as well. Soon, Mahira and Shehnaaz had a bad showdown. Paras also intervened, responding to Shehnaaz’s statements but she refused to stop. Sidharth stopped Shehnaaz while Paras asked Mahira to stay quiet. However, both refused to shut their mouths. Eventually Rashami dragged Shehnaaz out of the room and went upto Mahira to ask her shut her mouth. Sidharth told Shehnaaz, “Jo English boli tune! Teen sentence ekdum sahi!” Soon, Comedy club task began and housemates yelled “insaan insaan” as a live audience entered the house and sat to watch and judge the housemates as comedians. TV actor Sidharth Shukla, who has clearly had the maximum fights inside Bigg Boss 13, locked horns with not just his favourite rivals - Asim Riaz and Rashami Desai, he even fought with Shehnaaz Gill, who shares a rather sweet relationship with him, and old friend Arti Singh.Here are all the top highlights from tonight’s episode: The episode opened with Devoleena Bhattacharjee coming on the sets to bid goodbye to everyone. She said her view changed after she stepped out of the house. She also said she earlier felt Sidharth Shukla is impolite but now has realised he may have temper issues but he is not heartless. All he needs is a good friend, she added. She also said Rashami is unable to vent out her feelings at the right place and it is hampering her behaviour. She also said Rashami is losing her track. Devoleena received a warm welcome inside the house. (Your mom is my mom).” Asim said Sidharth should control his anger, take care of his health and remember “inki maa meri maa aur inki behen meri maa. (Your mom is my mom and your sister is my sister). ” Rashami said Mahira should use her words wisely. Arhaan said Sidharth should speak more politely with women. Vishal wanted Rashami to talk clearly, with as much clarity as her thoughts and Salman made fun of the fact that he called Rashami’s thoughts clear. Madhurima said Arti should refrain from using friends and rather carry out her friendships well. Shehnaaz said Rashami should speak up about her relationship. Shefali Bagga wanted Rashami to be strong inside the house. Arti said Madhurima should concentrate on her relationship, instead of eyeing others’ behaviour. Shefali Jariwala said Madhurima should start waking up early. Paras said Asim should motivate fans to keep their houses clean and Salman chided him saying that the resolution applied to him as well. When Paras tried to reason that he completes his duties, Salman quipped, “Mai hota to apne bed, bartan sab karta (If I were inside the house, I would have made up my bed, cleaned my own plates and glasses and even cleaned up for others, if he had some free time.Mahira said Asim should also take care that he does not respond to Sidharth’s anger in equal measure and controls his anger. Sidharth said Shehnaaz should “switch on” her mind. Salman then assigned yet another task that he claimed he ideated as a six-year-old kid. Each contestant would have to paint a co-housemate’s face whom they want to target to win the Bigg Boss trophy.Mahira picked Paras while Paras painted Sidharth’s face. Shefali Jariwala painted Asim’s face. Arti picked Rashami and Shefali Bagga painted Paras’s face. Shehnaaz picked Paras and said it would be equal if Sidharth wins the trophy or she wins it. Madhurima painted Shehnaaz’s face and Vishal also picked Shehnaaz. Arhaan painted Asim’s face while Rashami also painted Asim’s face and Asim picked Rashami. Sidharth picked himself and claimed, “Mai trophy jitu ya nahi ye meri wajah se hi hoga (Whether I win or lose the show, it will be because of me alone).” Salman said that was the joke and Sidharth must give him the real answer. Sunny Leone also entered Bigg Boss 13 sets with a beautiful cake to celebrate Salman’s cake. She said the cake was for new years’, Salman’s newborn niece, his birthday and the success of Dabangg 3. She also tried Salman’s dialogue from Dabangg 3 and had everyone laughing. “Apne baccho se seekh rahi ho, (Are you learning all these antics from your children?)” Salman asked and she replied in the affirmative. Salman then offered her macaroons and asked her to mouth words with a macaroon in her mouth. She has tough Hindi words like Ullanghan (disobeying) and Romanchak (adventurous) that bowled her over and made her lose the game. Sunny also enacted the famous dialogues of Sunny Deol – Dhai kilo ka haath and Tareekh pe Tareekh. Sunny also made Salman groove to her hit number, Baby Doll.The caller of the week asked Sidharth why was he fighting with Rashami if he had already apologized to her. Sidharth said it was her confusion, adding that he simply ended the confusion and never apologised. He also said “humare beech me koi jhagda ya gaali galoj nahi hua hai. (We never had a fight or even a heated debate). He also claimed that Rashami was the one who instigated him and he never initiated fights inside the house. Rashami again chipped in saying Sidharth often made creative changes to the script of the show they worked upon together, to which Sidharth said “Apko batau kab kab bani hai aur kya bana hai, bhool gai hain? (Should I tell you what all happened and when it happened? Have you forgotten it all?).”

Salman then announced Madhurima Tuli, Shefali Bagga and Arhaan had the lowest votes. Salman could not control his laughter and rolled on the floor as he announced that the eviction would happen at midnight and Bigg Boss would announce the name. Soon as Salman left, Sidharth fought with Shehnaaz and asked her not to hold his hand. He then called Arti and asked “kaun se cans khulenge? (What cans did you say would open?)” He also shouted at Rashami that she keeps talking about stuff from their life outside the house. Arti insisted Rashami should keep quiet. Arhaan walked upto Sidharth and the two ended up fighting yet again. Sidharth yelled at Arti who was trying to pacify him. Asim also intervened and asked Sidharth to keep quiet. Arti also went upto Rashami and then asked her to stop talking about the fight, old things and each other. Arti also asked her not to talk about her house or Sidharth. Sidharth then said, “Thakeli, peeche aati hai khud, Goa tak aphunch gait hi. Bakwaas karti hai (She follows me, came all the way to Goa!).” Arti requested him to stop talking about it all while Rashami began crying. “Do line set me yaad nahi rehti thi, aur set ki baat batau? (She could not remember her lines on the sets of our show and she wants to talk about what happened on the sets? Should I spill all the beans?,” Sidharth yelled infront of Arti, addressing Rashami. Arti tried to stop Asim who also asked Sidharth and Rashami to stop fighting but she lost her calm. “Ladkiyo ki izzat ki baat karte hain, aisi ladkiyo ki izzat? (They talk about respecting women, respect for such women?)” Shehnaaz also yelled at Sidharth, asking him to calm down and not be instigated by Rashami. Sidharth also abused Rashami with words like “gandh se bhari hu aurat”. Asim then went upto Rashami and Arhaan and asked them to calm down. Shehnaaz went upto to Asim to ask him to stay away from the fight, just like she was doing.. Vishal also went upto Arhaan and told him that he should either just hit Sidharth and get out of the house or ignore till the time that he can. Vishal tried his best to calm down both Rashami and Arhaan, asking him to stay with Rashami as she needed him.Shehnaaz also said Sidharth should not use bad language but he yelled at her as well. “Wo poke karti hai tu ho jata hai,” Then, Bigg Boss asked everyone to come out in the garden area and then they welcomed Sunny Leone and Sunil Grover. TV actor and former Splitsvilla contestant gets stalker arrested in Mumbai - tv

The Churchgate Government Railway Police (GRP) has arrested a 29-year-old man for stalking and assaulting a television actor and her Non Resident Indian (NRI) friend at Charni Road railway station. The arrested accused identified as Shahrukh Shaikh, 29, is the resident of Mariyappa Nagar, Worli. Shaikh claims that he works with a well known night club in south Mumbai.The actor, identified as Harshita Kashyap, 26, who is working for an upcoming web series (she was also one of the contestants of Splitsvilla Season 8), is a resident of Four Bungalows in Andheri. While speaking with Hindustan Times, Kashyap said, “My friend Ish Pala, 27 who is an NRI and stays in South Africa, works in medical tourism. On December 2, she invited me to come with her to Saifee hospital at Charni road. So we decided to go by train as the hospital is just across the road from the station.”“As it was afternoon, the train was partially empty. After she finished her work in the hospital, at around 3:30 pm we reached the station to return home. Pala was standing in the queue to purchase a train ticket when I noticed that someone was staring at us, initially we ignored but he was constantly stalking us,” said Kashyap.While Kashyap and Pala were ascending the stairs they noticed that they were still being stalked. Kashyap confronted him, saying “why you are looking fixedly at me”.
