I've recently realized I'm Idemromantic, and also that I have internilized heteronormative tendencies that lead me to excluding girls/femme genders as potential romantic partners. One of my friends who knows I'm ace thinks I'm heteroromantic,

which can make me uncomfortable at times. Do you have any tips on getting over my internilized heteronormativity, and/or suggestions on how I should explain my rom. orientation to my friend? I don’t think she even knows what heteronormativity is

Internalized heteronormative thoughts come about due to prolonged and exclusive exposure to heteronormative society and media, so the best thing you can do to break that is to think critically about everything you see and all the media you consume. When you see a hetero relationship, try to analyze what makes their relationship work from a character perspective, setting aside their genders. Take in as much non-hetero media as you can get your hands on. Look up books, movies, or TV shows with non-hetero romantic relationships, especially relationships where one or more of the people is a woman. Here’s a goodreads page full of lesbian novels, for example. The more non-hetero examples you can fill your brain with, the weaker your heteronormative thoughts will become.

You could explain your romantic orientation by saying something like, “I’m demiromantic, so I could be interested in a romantic relationship after I get to know somebody well. (Edit by Kiowa) I'm idemromantic, so romantic and platonic attraction feel very similar to me, and I think I could be interested in romance with any gender, but I’ve spent so long just seeing heterosexual relationships that I find it hard to think about myself in a non-hetero relationship. That’s called heteronormativity, did you know? The world view that heterosexual relationships are normal and preferred. I’m trying to get over thinking that way.”
