the playlist I use to bookmark podcast episodes to listen to finally ran out again so I needed to find some new shows to add to the rotation (so I can add their backlogs to the list) and I found one that's a movie review podcast based in STL! the first ep I listen to to get a feel for them is about the movie The Fallout (which I really loved and was excited to see they covered cause it's not a main stream movie) and I'm not even fully into the episode and they've mentioned Three Identical Strangers (one of my all time favorite documentaries) and Charlie Bartlett (my long time actual favorite film, which is also super obscure to most people) I think I hit the fucking jackpot!

A very well thought out and written reply. However, I have a small point of correction:

Rusty Quill went from a total of two productions (Magnus and Stella Firma), run by the initial Magnus team, to a production house responsible for at least 9 original productions, run by new collaborators from outside the initial group.

This statement is factually incorrect. During "Wave 1" Rusty Quill had three original public podcasts (Rusty Quill Gaming (2015), The Magnus Archives (2016) and Stellar Firma (2019)), as well as the 6-episode patreon-only narrative podcast "Inexplicables" (April-May 2021).

The point about the bad communication stands. And the fact that Rusty Quill Gaming (and Stellar Firma) is so often forgotten next to the behemoth that The Magnus Archives became, is evidence enough of that.

Rusty Quill never bothered to promote any of their originals in a way that came even close to the way they promoted TMA. And fans of RQG, STL, C&M and Trice Forgotten are justifiably upset about this inequality and blatant favoritism.

Yes, promote your most popular product to draw in more fans. But then redirect those fans to the less popular products as well, so they can become big. Don't just expect people to know you have other podcasts.

Listen to the Mothership TTRPG special on the Magnus feed and tell me that Ben doesn't sound as frustrated as me - or even more - about exactly this issue.

This article is six parts and thousands of words, but I hope you read it. Incredibly brave creators spoke about their experience working with Rusty Quill, and their stories kept me up for nights. In my opinion, some of the actions taken by this company were unconscionable - but I invite you to read this piece and decide for yourself.

There is no ethical consumption under capitalism, but the behavior we support will be emulated by other podcast companies. It is up to us as a community to decide what that behavior should be, and take concrete action to uphold it.
