Never noticed these signs near St James Garlickhythe but for some reason I looked up yesterday after a particularly good lunchtime practice (progressing with plain hunt, practiced dodging to practice speed changes and thrown into ringing down in peal) and spotted these. Garlick and Hythe were two words in 1889 and makes perfect sense given the history of the area (garlic imports were brought up my from the river from the small port, up to Garlick Hill). I like that these old parish markers were put up again when these new buildings replaced the old walls. Beautiful dahlias @stjamesgarlickhythe being arranged for a memorial service tomorrow 🌼🌸💕 Lunchtime #bellringing practice at #stjamesgarlickhythe #royaljubileebells was busy with 10 ringers so call changes on 8, plain hunt on five and then 7. First #bellringing practice night at St James Garlickhythe since March 2020 (I know, I was there already for lunchtime ringing but it’s a different group and band) and it was so nice to be back! Good to see everyone again, and nice to meet in person and ring with @drapesy84, who I follow on social media. I enjoy his walk tweets. I got to ring up in peal in 4 and it wasn’t bad. I kept up with the pace. Lots of concentrated plain hunt on 5 training. We also tried a listening exercise where we rang rounds and then called to face the wall. I rang the tenor but realised I needed the box. Back to lunchtime ringing at St James Garlickhythe and the light was magical ✨ 👌🏻 #royaljubileebells #stjamesgarlickhythe Of course I chose my work-in-the-office-days around ringing (priorities, right! 😂) So nice to be back #bellringing here - the bells are lovely! 🔔 Only 5 of us to start but we rang Plain Hunt on 5 anyway, then when ringer 6 came, some concentrated Plain Bob Doubles practice and I rang bell 4 since I got on well with it at the weekend training course. It wasn’t a total disaster #practicemakesperfect And Max introduced us to ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ to practice bell control. I was on the treble so I had an easy ride! 😂 And more ringing tonight at #kingstonbellringers practice - more Plain Bob Doubles on the 5 and some of it was ok. As we can’t ring as our act of #remembrance, I’ve reposted #kingstonbellringers ringing from last year @kingstonbellringers 🔔 (a single bell has been asked to toll.) And here’s a video of the #royaljubileeringers and the #royaljubileebells from two years ago practising ‘whole-pull-and-stand’. It was also my first time ringing on #muffledbells when I got to experience the eerie and haunting echo. This was our regular Thursday practice night before the #ringingremembers Remembrance Day service ringing. Ringing Remembers was an initiative in 2018 whereby @_bigideas and the ringing community set out to teach 1400 ringers (to commemorate the ringers lost in #ww1) to commemorate #armistice100 #armisticeday (They actually managed to teach double that number and in the process, have enriched my life with this wonderful community of #bellringers 🔔). And this video features our dear friend Geoff Foster, who sadly died recently and who we will miss dearly #RIP. @jamsinton ran the campaign at the time and so far, it was the one and only time we rang together - we need to rectify that once we can ring again (!) and also featured in this video, @christopher_stocks who had the honour of ringing the tenor. #stjamesgarlickhythe #bellringing cc @vicki.chapman https://instagr.am/p/CHUwoiwnpYB/

I’m a really bad student or I haven’t the motivation tonight. I wanted to keep to my schedules and since there’s no #bellringing practice tonight, I thought I’d try out a website at home instead. However, I can’t seem to get on with it so I’ll stick to good old pencil and paper instead and write out #PlainBobDoubles instead. It doesn’t replace actually doing it though ☹️ Chin up and keep sane, I suppose! We got some special post today in the tower @kingstonbellringers. The Canadian grandson/photographer of a church warden @allsaintschurchkingston visited us in the tower last June and took some pictures of the band, and sent us some lovely prints. So nice to see the band captured. And I’m not gurning in them (and he managed to capture the rare moment I’m wearing our band T-shirt.) Smiling in fact! And good practice today. My plain hunt is finally coming along and it is sounding good. Still a few tweaks (still need to go faster and not pause before leading) but I think everyone was impressed with progress. Amazing colour on the tree outside St James Garlickhythe and a nice bit of sunshine after the gloomy rainy day on Tuesday 🌳 Successful lunchtime ringing practice - rang two bells up (in peal, just), Plain Hunt on 4, trebling (#plainhunting) to #grandsiredoubles and #reversecanterbury (my #plainhunt on 5 is coming along now), a mammoth #callchanges where we went into #queens and #titums, and then ringing down the #tenor, again in peal (gulp!)
