Day 22 of my Yoga challenge and feeling great. Feeling loose. Feeling mobile. Feeling zen. One of my favourite yoga poses is the lunge. The lunge comes in all shapes and sizes. It can be simple or quite complex. But most of us these days have tightness in the hip flexors and this is a great one to counteract that. It also strengthens and stretches at the same time as well as promoting balance. A great variation of the low lunge is to have your knee on a cushion on the ground and toes pointing up. Engage your core and squeeze the back glutes. You can raise your arms to intensify the stretch. Don’t forget to the breathe. Nasal breathing is best. Breathe into the diaphragm. Deep breathing allows you to tap into your parasympathetic nervous system, your relaxation response. This allows your body to then ease into the stretch. Took my new runners for a test spin on today’s trail run. It’s amazing training for the brain walking or running or on the uneven surfaces you will come across in the bush. Develops your balance, keeps you alert and on your toes and if you’re really lucky you may just see some wildlife.. Try mixing up the routes, speeds and distances often. I’m nursing a hamstring injury at the moment. Which is quite difficult for me. Because I love training. And I train on average 6 times a week. Usually full body circuits. So every day working upper body lower body and core in some fashion mostly high intensity and functional movements. So sometimes I catch myself feeling sorry myself for a moment thinking “man this is so annoying.. I can’t train properly.” But then I catch myself and think “okay but what’s the benefit in this situation?” We’ll usually pain in your body is telling you a sign. Perhaps I’m being told I need to mix it up a bit more. Do a bit more mobility work, bit more stretching. Maybe less circuits, maybe more breathing exercises, maybe some meditation. So maybe I’ve been looking at this in the wrong way. Maybe the opportunity is in slowing down, Cultivating energy, And tuning into my body a bit more. Because that really is so incredibly important.
