Manta Ray mermaid for mermay! I’m not really following any prompts, so I decided to just screw around with some design ideas. I love merfolk so I’ll definitely be drawing more than one!

I sat on these for a while bc I kept not being totally sold on the designs yet and they were still kind of sloppy (tho the Shak one was more recent), but gonna share anyway! Designs might still change a bit.

There's a part in the AU where they all p much get mer forms with using a temporary spell in order to visit a mer city for some specific information! Always loved stuff like that when it'd come up in media. Not sure if Hoagie will have another form or just be in a magic bubble still... Daniel is here too, but he's just in his amphibeast form then. I take inspiration from different sea life for the merpeople designs and aren't stuck to one thing while still usually sticking to some shared traits. Shak has a tail separate from her legs bc she had a variant spell to lessen the transformation bc she was scared about transforming so differently (tho who can blame her when all her close loved ones have ALL had traumatic TF happen to them!). The merpeople don't usually have hair or non-scaly skin, but air breathers will still keep some features from before and so they look a bit more distinct from true merfolk.

More like mermaid AU 😭 I was planning to do the whole cast but 1. Figured out these are the only characters I can draw apparently and 2. I ain’t doing that 😬

Mermay 2024: Merfolk Currency and Tidbits of the World of Urvara

This Mermay has a lot less content than usual as this was a MAJOR May event, with a lot of artwork to do for patrons, but I still managed to hash out some stuff for Mermay worldbuilding!

Primarilly, it's all about currency, because I always wanted to explore littler details like "what would Merfolk exchange with one another besides bartering?"

For the singular images, one focuses on the Sea Lord, specifically his final opponent. The Titan, a Titanichthys merman that was considered THE force of nature to beat.

The other focuses on freshwater refugees, as river systems and lakes become landlubber territory, and thus harder to keep hidden. A giant stingray mermaid may be the biggest fish in her old homeland, but she is still dwarfed by the likes of say, a Mer-Manta man. While "Greenwater" folk are immune to the deadlier aspects of moving from fresh to saltwater in comparison to their wild animal counterparts, it's a long and resource intensive acclimation process.

Got a comm to do a stingray/manga ray mermaid girl! She gave me creative freedom aside from the prompt and this is what she got! More pics of this later as I am also doing a version with legs for her

Yellow Squid, Blue Fish

They’ve both grown up so much since they last saw each other.

Leaving the WASP’s wasn’t easy; watching him go was harder. They are both so loyal, unable to pull away from the families and soil that raised them. Gordon to his brothers; Marina to the people who saved her.

But one yellow squid and one blue fish always find a way back to one another, colliding in a perfect dance like two currents of the same sea. They’re just friends; close friends even after so many years. Sometimes…just sometimes, when the situation is perfectly ripe…they are more.

But, it never really mattered what they were or were not in the end. They didn’t care much either way.

Marina and Gordon are two kindred spirits singing the same ocean song; twin ships passing calmly in the night. One exists to balance the other, despite their standing on opposite shores.

Marina and Gordon are friends. Just friends. But both can’t help but wonder what it would’ve been like if they had just stayed fearless…instead of letting the other sail away.
